Boxcar Bar & Kitchen in City of London, Westminster

We went there to have a drink and the lady there asked us if we had a reservation we said no, and she looked at us in disgust. It was so appalling and insulting. We left the place right away. I can understand the place might be full during evenings/ weekdays but that/s not how to treat customers.

Came here for a drink, the staff is very friendly and nice, the atmosphere is really good, it’s tiny but very pretty. The cocktail was amazing and prices reasonable according to the position of the bar.

All good the food was delicious and the waiter is kind. I will visit again!

Visited on a busy Saturday night and took the last available seat at the bar. Food was OK, as described and as expected and served in a reasonable time. The people either side of me ordered steak and had a very bad experience - food was very slow to arrive, one steak was way over cooked and the other way under, neither looked particularly appealing. Service was a mixed experience. The waitress seemed more interested in flirting with the other staff than doing her job - throwing a menu at customers while rushing past is not the way to do it in my opinion. The barman however was attentive and quick and made a great negroni. All up a mixed bag. I might go back at a quiet time if I was in the area but certainly wouldn't go out of my way.

I visited a couple of weekends ago and I had an extremely positive experience at Boxcar. The atmosphere was very warm and relaxed. Our server looked after us very well and was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, being able to advise even on the portion sizes. Drinks were reasonably priced for Central London and the food was enjoyed by all us in attendance and we all had a variety of starters, mains and desserts. I'd happily return and have no reservations in recommending Boxcar.

Slow service - took a good 15 mins place order and then everything came out very slowly. Scallops delicious, torched mackerel pretty good… rib eye was very very fatty. Not much one could actually eat. Good value and the staff were very nice.

Had the pleasure of dining at Boxcar today. Everything was perfect from start to finish. My mackerel was wonderful as was my son’s Lamb. Great bottle of Sauvignon Blanc added to the fun. Thank you to the team there for a great Easter lunch.

We came with my friend for lunch. We took the Sunday roast chicken. It was delicious, potatoes were super crispy everything had a lot of flavor. However i think it could be a bit warmer. The staff was super friendly and the place is lovely. 12,5% imposed tips is a lot…(like, a lot!)

Had the most amazing dinner last night at Boxcar. The fillet steak was like butter - so tender, I barely needed a knife. And those scallops with pancetta and artichokes were the best I’ve ever tasted. I usually don’t have dessert but I had to try the rhubarb millefeuille. I’m still dreaming about those layers of pastry and cream. The service was impeccable too. Lorenzo and Liam made the whole experience like we were dining in a warm, welcoming home. I can’t wait to go back.

Amazing service food and drinks, great value and atmosphere. Loved the interiorwith its neutral tones interior.we had a vegetarian with us and the loved all there options she was very happy vegetaria. Meat was exceptionaland cooked to perfection exceptional. I can't wait to go back x

Forth visit and consistently good, friendly staff and great food.

Had a great meal at Boxcar on Saturday night. We were greeted with a smile from the waiter and had prompt service all night. Food was esquisite. I would highly recommend!

Always delicious and mouth watering steak here. Very cosy for a date night or night with friends.

Upstairs atmosphere is great. It loses something downstairs. A bit too dark and no windows Good Sunday roast and starters with plenty of vegetarian options.

We loved our meal at boxcar. Nice ambience, lovely decor. Nice service. We had sirloin steak and burger. Both delicious. We shared chocolate ganache for desert. Very good. Will return.

We only popped in for cocktails, on our way somewhere. If we hadn’t already booked somewhere I’d have loved to have stayed. Anyway, called in on our way back. The drinks beautifully served. Service very warm and friendly. Next time I’m in London I will visit again and also recommend anyone else to do so. Very cozy atmosphere but vibrant as well.

Cozy ambiance and the food was great! No complaints.

Actually it’s better than three star but not quite “very good”. The starters were so limited that we didn’t bother (not a lot for non-pork, non-seafood eaters, nothing to share and no soup). Those who chose well and had the Venison, had a really delicious meal. I’m still cross that I ordered trout with beetroot as the trout was ordinary and the beetroot slightly hard and under-cooked. It was fine but not special. Maybe ordering fish in such a meaty place was just a silly idea. The desserts (there were just two and we tried both) were good. The chocolate one isn’t really my thing but it was dense and chocolaty and cut by the fruit. The ginger saverin was excellent as were most of the bits with it except the chestnuts which were too crisp and hard plus didn’t taste of chestnut (I’m a bit of a chestnut freak) The service was good and attentive -others have complained at it but all seemed pretty efficient on quite a busy Friday night. I suspect it really is a place just for meat-eaters and I’m not that keen. That doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty good for them.

Can't fault this place. We were a large group including kids and the staff were incredibly accommodating and knowledgeable. Stumbled on this place as was looking for a last minute roast for a large group that included close friends from out of town (Australia). I wanted them to experience a Sunday Roast, London style! Boy did this place IMPRESS! From it's easy location to it's atmosphere, to it's service to it's food.... Tick, tick, tick tick and more ticks. I have to admit this would be one of the best roasts I've had in a restaurant! If you are in the area, do yourself a favour and be sure to visit this gem!! I'll definitely be returning! We came for food on Friday 23nd of December. As we were tourists to the area, we wanted to enjoy a nice meal close to Hyde Park. We came in with our autistic son, who will only eat certain foods. All 3 of us really enjoyed the meal. The food was outstanding. However, when we firstly entered the restaurant and asked for a table of 3, the waitress pulled a face as if they were to busy. There were only 2 tables there on arrival. She turned to her colleague and then agreed that we could sit down. My husband also seen this face, and we both thought they must have been expecting further guests. Later on, another family came in and were literally treated like royalty and then it clicked - they thought we were low class! The bill came to £135 and when we got back home, I worked out what we had ordered compared to what we had paid. They had charged us a service fee which on the menu says is optional. Unfortunately, we were not given this option. As we are not from London, and where we live we do not have service charges, we feel we were taken advantage of being tourists. As mentioned above, food outstanding and the staff were friendly enough but wouldn't return based on the above.

Service was very slow and servers were unapologetic / had no sense of urgency. I had to ask for my drink, scallops and steak. Was 45 min wait in between courses and they didn’t offer us dessert. For a £200 meal would recommend going elsewhere

The beef Sunday Roast was okay nothing special. The atmosphere was great and more relaxed compared to the usual pubs were you might have sunday roast. I would not go back because the food was not as delicious but I had a good experience nonetheless.

Really nice choice for Sunday lunch. Contemporary ambiance with friendly service. Extremely flavoursome roast chicken with all the trimmings. Very tasty chocolate mousse for dessert. Prices reasonable for central London. Would definitely recommend and would return again.

Visited for Sunday lunch. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. We turned up just before opening and asked if they could seat 10 of us for lunch. With a bit of jiggling the staff worked their magic and we had a wonderful table out the back of the restaurant (talk about private dining). Now the food - I’m not one for Sunday dinners away from home as they always are a let down. Well not this one! We ordered sharing dinners and every morsel was absolutely spot on! The staff were attentive and very welcoming, they honestly couldn’t do enough for us. 10 people, no reservation, best Sunday lunch ever! Definitely recommend!

Service was probably the worst I have experienced ever in my life. The waitress did not even apologise for it. Food took nearly 100 minutes to come over. I do not recommend this place at all. You have been warned ;)

Popped in for a beer on the way to an event this week. There was nobody at the front so I went to the bar and asked for a beer. The barman rather obnoxiously asked me if I had a table. I said I didn’t realise I needed one and was planning on sitting at the bar. I got sent back to the entrance and waited whilst the front of house person dealt with another customer. Once he had done that he sort of looked at me as if to say what do you want and when I explained he looked around and eventually said I could sit at the bar if I wanted in a rather dismissive tone. I told them it was ok and went elsewhere. Strange customer service all round.

I really enjoyed their beef burger. Delicious. I would come again with a few friends. Excellent & friendly staff.

I really enjoyed my meal at Boxcar Bar and Grill. The angus beef steak was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. The service was also excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive, and made sure that I had everything I needed. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others.

Very welcoming, food very tasty.

Oh dear, this was just awful and excruciating. The service was shambolic but in a way that left me feeling thoroughly sorry for the staff. The table was cramped to the point where it was difficult for the diners next to us to exit for the toilet/cigarette without us getting out of our seats. The staff trying to serve us/ the next table had the same perilous issue. We ordered drinks, they didn’t come and we asked again and when they came the £cocktail was average. We tried to order food but it was a challenge. The staff were confused/uncertain about the menu. The food we were told was not available/sold but which was still on the special board(a mirror that was really hard to read) was delivered despite us being asked to chose something else. I’m still not quite sure what we got. When the food came it was decent but not anything special. Eating the food was uncomfortable in the cramped seating. The whole thing just made me want to leave. I felt sorry for the staff who were seemingly lovely but who needed training and support. None of this is the end of the world and I wish them well but when I’m going out and spending money to eat out service really matters and there are so many places to go that get these basics right. On basis of my experience I’d say give this place a wide berth.

This restaurant is located in a quiet street in Marylebone and has a nice cozy feeling. The food was good and the staff was kind and welcoming. If you want to eat some good steak in London in a nice restaurant, I recommend you check out this place!

Lunch time visit, food really good. Quality ingredients cooked very well. Service good l, our server forgot my drinks order but the manager was very polite and professional in redeeming the problem.

My husband and I stumbled upon this hidden gem near Quebec Street during our visit to London. We had an incredible meal, starting with excellent house ricotta, delicious pigs head croquettes, and roast scallops. The highlight was the sharing stuffed roasted chicken, which was the best Sunday roast we've had in ages ! It came with roast shallots, Yorkshire puddings, creamy leeks, roasted carrots, and grilled cabbage—a true triumph. Desserts were equally delightful. The only downside? We couldn't walk afterwards after eating all that lovely food so we enjoyed more cocktails at the bar. Highly recommended Jannette

A great find just off the beaten track. My friend and I both had a perfect steak and the sides were just the right size. Very friendly staff with a special mention to our Italian waitress.

Had an incredible fillet steak here for lunch on a Saturday. The place is really nice - you can tell a lot of care goes into the decor and food, but for us it was spoiled by the service. There was only one waitress, who was obviously stressed about the lack of staff as she was having to tend to 5 tables and make drinks by herself. She did her best, but it made the experience a bit uncomfortable, and slow. Our food ticket was lost on the way to the kitchen which meant another delay, although we did get given complimentary juices. If they can sort those issues, I’d be tempted to try it again.

What a lovely little restaurant nestled in a culinary street in Marylebone. Firstly, the staff are just wonderful - friendly, funny, chatty but not over bearing. It was quiet in the restaurant so I can’t really say much about the atmosphere but I can say I was offered a seat where ever I’d like. The outside would’ve been perfect of the wether was a little better. I chose to sit in a bright spot at the back of the restaurant adorned with foliage and a skylight. I ordered the filet steak, which I’m sad to say I feel was over cooked. Perhaps I should’ve asked for rare. In fact I’d normally say ‘how the chef recommends’ when asked how I like my steak but for some I know reason I said medium- rare this time. Even for medium rare it felt over done. I ordered the pepper corn sauce which was tasty and abundant and I wish I’d offered som fries to dip in but I chose the summer vegetables that happens to be cabbage. I decided to sneak in a cheeky cheese board after and it was truly delicious. A fantastic drinks list accompanied the and the Pinot noir was especially quaffable

The location is very convienen and easy to get to; when we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly staff. The food was great, we had the burgers and the steak and they were all cooked as ordered. They also have a nice wine selection. For a casual dinner, it wa me the right spot. The only reason I don’t give it a Five out of five o Is the music, it was a bit too loud. I strongly recommend this place

Mediocre food, and very bad service. Each dish took at least 20 mins to bring to the table, even a cold pana cotta dessert. We also had to wait another 20 mins for the bill, without an apology. Unacceptable. Will not recommend.

Great restaurant in beautiful, smart, quiet side road. Excellent service. My daughter had the burger and said it was one of the best she's ever had. I had the ricotto, gremolata and peas with sourdough which was fantastic. Would highly recommend.

TL;DR was nice, probably not coming back I LOVE their other location and can go there every day, so i was excited to try this one. The food was not bad, but the service and professionalism was lacking - from waiters rarely coming over to my table area to statements like “we don’t have a dessert menu today, my colleague threw all of the copies out” 🤷🏼‍♂️ Again, it wasn’t THAT bad, but in London… where you have so many amazing places - it just doesn’t make sense to come back

Absolutely disgraceful service. Our orders were taken and we then sat waiting for 50 minutes. We eventually gotvup to ask when our food wood be arriving, only to be told that our order has not gone through and there sre no longer any Sirloin steaks available. Firstly, why were we not told about availability when we ordered? Secondly why were we allowed to simply just wait on a table, that would never be served? On complaining we simply got a "sorry". They seriously did not even care. Never setting foot in this restaurant again. I would never recommend it either.

We ordered our meal. 45 mins later we were still waiting. When l asked the waiter whether our food would long. I was told the order had not gone through to the kitchen as they had no steaks. I asked why they didn't come and tell us but l kept getting told was they had no steaks. Its not rocket science to come back to the customer, apologise that they have no steaks and ask if we wish to choose something else but nothing. Our order was just sat on their list on the till. Very bad customer service. We walked out

Dreadful We had our order taken. After waiting 45 mins l went and asked where our food was . I was told that the order had not gone through to the kitchen as they had no steaks. We were not told of this .very bad customer service. All they kept saying was they had no steaks. Why didn't they tell us this when we ordered. Nothing. Our bill would have been over £100 for the four of us so they missed out on that. Dreadful

Great atmosphere in this classic with a modern twist small restaurant. Steak was perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. Treated us as locals, felt like home.

Great place for an unpretentious, but delicious, bite. Their burger with 60 days aged beef was just perfection and so were their fries. Their cocktails looked appealing but it was a non-drinking eve for me (unfortunately!)

I was travelling to the UK and my cousin booked us to have dinner at this “supposedly” good restaurant. Nothing could be further from the truth. From the outset it was disastrous. Couldn’t get the drink order correct and then took forever to get the drinks out to us. Even when the drinks appeared one was missing and we had to ask a further 5 times before it was brought out. As for the food, we were told as they were busy they wouldn’t take our order because they couldn’t cope .. how ridiculous. Take the order and even if it took a long time to come out at least it was there. They eventually took our order and when the food came out many of the meals were stone cold and had to be sent back, a couple of the meals were luke warm. We asked for a steak knife for the steak so many times but even that simple request could not be fulfilled. We ordered a bottle of red wine and they sent out the incorrect bottle. The staff were less than helpful and then when I went to pay the manager tried to excuse the extremely poor service and food. Sorry, but I have never ever had such bad meals or service in any restaurant around the world. My advice for what it’s worth, don’t go here.

Our East End hotel recommended Boxcar when I asked for a lunch suggestion near Marble Arch. We were not disappointed. The service was welcoming and friendly and the food was excellent. My child enjoyed a burger with fries while I had a steak with peppercorn sauce and we shared a small salad. They had a special deal which allowed me a complimentary glass of house wine. Honestly: it was great and we look forward to returning. I've subtracted one star simply bc I'm not used to automatically-added gratuity, especially for a party of two. But I highly recommend this place and only give 5 star ratings to places that are pretty much perfect.

We entered with high hopes based on the reviews. I was the last to order and asked her about the chef’s special, which showed beef cheek. I politely asked how it was prepared. She huffed and said she would be right back to let me know. Another server came to deliver our drinks and I was missing my ale, which she promptly brought me. I never saw our original server and then everyone’s food came out. She apparently just left and I had nothing to eat. The food that the rest of my party received did not get good reviews from them. It put a damper on my first day of vacation here in London. I will not go back.

My partner and I love going out and trying different places. We adore a good steak and cocktails, so I decided that I will pick the location this time. It was a special ocasion as it was his birthday a few days ago. Because we are both busy and we live apart, we do have to plan thing beforehand, and this makes everything extra special. I booked a table at Boxcar in Marylebone and honestly I was very excited to try it out. Looked very cosy and romantic and had amazing reviews, but unfortunately for us wasn’t what it seemed. We had the very corner table, which wasn’t a problem at all, but because of it, we had to glase over the table next to us often to grab the server’s attention. The drinks arrived fairly quickly, but the starters and mains took a really long time. My partner worked, and I currently am working in hospitality, so we both know the service steps and timings. Just as an example, our table was booked at 19:30 and we left three hours later with no desserts or digestives. The starters were good, flavourful, as well as the big sharing steak. I asked the waiter if he can grab us a couple of steak sauces ( the peppercorn and the red wine jus) but unfortunately my partner finished by the time we got it. I choose to wait for it, and when I asked the second time it was brought extremely cold. Definitely was left at the pass station and forgotten. I did planned on a quick surprise bday dessert but unfortunately we had to grab the bill and paid on the spot. We never complaint, as we both know that sometimes the restaurant business can be challenging. In the end the waiter asked if I can pass him the plates and I found it to be a bit cheeky. If we had knew the we will have to clean the table ourselves after each course we would have been gone to a different place. Overall, it was a pretty disappointing one.

I really wanted to like this place, but the service was lousy. I was just about to leave after 20 mins of sitting at the table being ignored, when a waiter came, presenting me with a bill for a nearby table. Eventually I ordered a drink and food. The waiters avoided eye contact at all times. Excuse me…hello…can I please have some water… Spotting an empty glass but not bothering to check if a refill was required. Not checking if the food was ok. The only rapid response was the card machine arriving with the bill to quickly process the already applied 12.5% service charge. The food was ok. Not extraordinary and certainly not making up for the experience. Disappointing.

Arrived and the restaurant didn’t look particularly busy, but when we said we would like a table for three, hostess asked if we had reservations. When we said no, she rolled her eyes, and then jammed us at a two top table. So uncomfortable, no room for three pairs of legs under the table, never mind three plates, glasses and silverwear on top. Next warning sign, the menu prices looked to be expensive (more than the ££ rating, and since we were there for the steak noticed that you had to order the side ala carte). When the food finally arrived it was a steak thrown on a plate. That is it. Then the “sides” came and they were fries in a tin cup. Ok but how was the food? It was the worst steaks we had ever had. While tasty, all three were extremely tough (shoe leather) that was tough to cut even with the provided steak knives. The waitress didn’t come back to see how our food was until we were almost finished fighting our way through the steak. When less than enthusiastic responses given, she didn’t enquire if there was anything to be done etc. Just poor experience all the way around. The bill included an automatic gratuity, and was 107.21£ for 3 225g sirloins, 3 rosemary fries, .5 pint beer and a Diet Coke.

The staff was very friendly. Atmosphere and food were great. Had the sirloin steak and truffle fries. Will be back if theres a chance.

Amazing restaurant and food! The staff was so lovely and friendly, the food was amazing. Had the beef cheeks croquettes and Chateaubriand. The meat was on the point done and really amazing. They even had something for my special request! Looking forward to the next time, when I am in London!!

To start, I enjoyed the scallops and chorizo: a buttery and smoky classic combo done well. Secondly, I opted for the Duroc pork chop with a side of spring onion mashed potato and upon Federico’s recommendation, a tomato salad and red wine jus. Tangy apple sauce, the natural richness of the Duroc and the salty tomato salad was a tastebud tingling sensation. Not to mention the addition of the red wine jus, which was perfection. I had steak, beans and water. The steak tasted great, but unfortunately it was made from some cheap meat and half of it was inedible. It was explained to me that this is common with this steak. I eat steak in restaurants at least once a week and I have never encountered such poor quality meat. given that it tasted very good i would give it an average rating but i was annoyed that the restaurant charged itself a £4 tip. In this case, when I threw away half the food because it was inedible, I certainly wouldn't tip.

Really enjoyed this place. Must try their cocktails (walnut old-fashioned), sea bass, pork chop, and truffle fries. Also had the medium rare ribeye, but chewy.

Delicious steaks with creative sides. We recommend the ribeye over the Angus fillet. Great service throughout. Lovely cocktails and an affordable wine list. We loved the St Emilion

I recently had an excellent experience at this establishment. The service was top-notch, with the staff being quick and efficient while maintaining a relaxed and chill atmosphere. I felt welcomed and well taken care of from start to finish. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to come back. However, next time, I want clean dishes please. 😘

I recently had lunch at Boxcar, and I have to say that it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. From the delicious food to the excellent drink selection and wonderful service, everything was top-notch. To start, I had the chicken pate, which was smooth, creamy, and full of flavor. For my main course, I ordered the sirloin steak, which was cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. Both dishes were amazing, and I highly recommend them to anyone who visits Boxcar. One of the highlights of my visit, however, was the exceptional service provided by Federico, who was the host. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout the meal, making me feel welcome and taken care of from start to finish. Federico's outstanding service truly enhanced the dining experience and made it all the more enjoyable. I will be back!

We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, decor and friendly welcome for a rally enjoyable Saturday lunch. My OH opted for sirloin steak and skin on fires and I plumped for the generous pork chop with thyme jus and perfectly seasoned mash. Both dishes were superb....

I’ve been here one night for dinner, I ate a burger and it was delicious, well presented with including fries, the staff was very kind and gentle, especially Federico, very professional I recommended this place!!

Service was fantastic and the food was pretty good and good portion sizes! The sourdough bread starter was alright. Pork chop was cooked well and tender, the sea bass was delicious, and we enjoyed the truffle and Parmesan fries. We had a nice bottle of red wine to go with it all. I’d recommend this place for date nights or catch up with friends.

Mediocre food and very aggressive and unpleasant servers!

It’s odd that another 1 star review seems to be now hidden? The terrible taste of the steak is still in my mouth, something was really off about it… Not to mention the staff was beyond slow and inattentive. It took 30min to bring bread but it took only 5 minutes to make mashed potatoes? Doesn’t make sense.
