Everything you'd want a village fish and chip shop to be! The perfect haddock and chips. Friendly owner and service. Feel very fortunate to have this in the village.

Very friendly owner who cheerfully cooked fresh food for me even whe I showed up near closing time and still had time for a chat. Apparently the menu has been stripped back by the hew owner to stick to the basics and make what he does the best he can make it. Job done. Plaice and cod cooked to perfection in nicely seasoned batter, served with optional lemon wedges. Chips were perfectly done too and a large portion was perfect for two to share. Nicely done Chef, I'll be back soon for more.

I'd stopped using this shop but have started again since the new owners have taken over. They are wonderfully generous to the community and the food has always been hot and tasty.

I'm disabled and find it hard to go to takeaways. I phoned up and explained my situation. I ordered large Haddock large chips it came to £13 there was enough for me and my neighbour to have half each and it was gorgeous. The fish was cooked perfectly and the chips perfectly cooked. And the service they brought my food to the door as I couldn't get in .all round highly recommend this place .

We had cad and chips for two, the fish was excellent as was the service and online ordering system. I give only 4 stars as the chips were past their best, but I'd certainly use the shop again.

Fantastic service lovely friendly owners best priced and excellent quality fish and chips around here for miles there prices are very reasonable and not over priced like the ones in diss credit to the owners keep up the good work.

Chip shop closed on hurs despite hrs saying it is open. They font do delivery now which is hard for me as there is nowhere to park and I'm disabled so it's difficult, and would be good if there was a delivery. Food is great though, good service inside and friendly atmosphere.

Had a takeaway 1/2 pounder with cheesy chips and onion rings . It was delicious lovely not to have a brioche bun . The service was great from the young lad, and the owner is brilliant 🤩. I shall definitely go again !

Botesdale was definitely my go to for fish and chips But unfortunately after ordering 2 x large chips and being changed £9 is now outside that comfortable bracket of cost vs take away Have potato’s increased so much in Suffolk that the price increase is warranted (doesn’t seem to be in other local fish and chip restaurants.) Is it the lack of custom from the local community (will a price increase help) What ever the reason this will be my final trip and makes the trip into diss for a chippy more attractive.

Several years ago we got a delivery from here and was appalled. See review below. We finally have gotten around to revisit after the change of ownership. My wife picked the food up and had a lovely chat with the new owner. All the staff there were friendly and welcoming. We got fish and chips and a sausage and chips. Both were cooked very nice with a light batter. The fish was beautiful and flaked apart. We will definitely be going back. It is great that there has been such a massive turn around. Thank you 😊 Would be 0 stars if it would let me. Ordered a delivery for dinner tonight and when it arrived and we unpacked it, we were very disappointed. I ordered a mixed kebab with extra doner and my wife had a chicken kebab.We also ordered a regular chips to share. I will start with mine. The chicken and lamb looked like they had come out the local crematorium and were mostly black lumps. The doner meat looked like a tray of jerky and it was leather like in texture and totally dried out. I tested a small piece and it took some chewing to finally be able to get it down. The salad was probably the only edible part of the whole thing. My wives chicken was also char grilled. The regular chips was more like a small childs portion and very cold. I sat down to eat what I could but after a few mouth fulls I decided it was worse than it looked and the whole meal went in the bin. This was our first and last time of using Botesdale chip shop and we will stick with the one in Stanton in the future.

We were staying with friends at the nearby Swattesfield campsite and decided on a whim to drive the seven or so. miles over to pick up a large order of chips, fish, mushy peas, etc. We phoned ahead to order and the food was more or less ready on arrival. the staff were really lovely" funny, attentive and very generous with both portions and extra side dishes they threw in. A proper old school chippie that we'll definitely be coming back to next time we're in the area. Highly recommended.

Brilliant fish and chips always , this is now our go to fish and chip shop

Had haddock and chips just now for the first time. My husband went to collect, surprised to find he was the only customer at 6pm on a Saturday evening . The large haddocks were freshly cooked, and were hot and delicious. Unfortunately the chips were overcooked and very cold, inedible. Had to throw them out. Obviously been cooked quite a while before and just sat. Such a shame, especially at £9.80 each, everything should be good. Really disappointed .

Excellent fish and chips, piping hot food and reasonably priced, owner is very nice, pleasant and chatty, although we had takeaway we ate their table that they have, which is lovely to have in the winter

We asked the guys to cater for our Quiz Night. We had nearly 70 portions of food ordered, with options of fish, gluten free fish, sausages or vegetarian. They were great. They even very generously gave us a few extra side orders we didn't ask for nor pay for. And despite the numbers everyone's food tasted fresh and hot. Will go to them next time for sure!

Lovely crispy batter on fish but sadly fish was a bit dry, chips were ok but a bit disappointing over all. Lovely shop but probably not again! So sorry but felt had to be honest.

Staying with friends in the village we had Friday fish and chips from the shop - best I’ve had in years - hot, crisp and very fresh. Lovely staff thank you.

We ordered this evening by telephone. Really disappointing. The chips were cold and greasy, the fish batter on all four pieces of cod ordered was a strange colour, undercooked and also greasy. The fish itself however was well cooked. We will not be ordering again.

I was unsure about eating here again after a few bad experiences, but having seen its under new management I decided to give it a try. The ham hock and leek pie was awesome! and the chips were beautiful. A million times better than the old management.

Fish so over cooked it was like eating cardboard!

Ate one among a small group (discovered that it was the first day reopening after the cook's holiday) I had beef burger as I had eaten fish for several days over my visit to Suffolk - it was excellent. My companions all had fish and chips, either haddock or cod, and they all said it was delicious. We all enjoyed our chips. A seriously good traditional fish and chip shop. I hope that I'll be able to return soon and have no hesitation in recommending to others.

I was fortunate last week to be able to return to spend a few days in the countryside East Anglia. With the temperature rising every day and the sun shining and harvest in progress it was delightful. I was also fortunate to be able to return to Botesdale fish and chip shop (which I found out was their first day reopening after a summer break!) Having eaten much fish in the few days before I chose the beef burger. It was very good with delicious caramelised onion garnish. My companions each chose fish and were unanimous in their praise for both the haddock and the cod, and we all agreed the chips were excellent. If you are in the area and fancy fish and chips, or other meat options, I'll be surprised if you find better elsewhere.

We were on holiday in Suffolk and had an amazing takeaway from Botesdale fish and chip shop. We are a large family with lots of special requirements like gluten free and vegetarian, there were so many options for everyone and the staff were so helpful dealing with our needs. The batter on the fish was crispy and tasted delicious, everyone loved their food and we will definitely be returning when we are next in Suffolk. We would highly recommend giving this chippy a go.

Sadly this fish n chip shop has new owners. The fish and chips used to be delicious, not anymore. The fish was wet and the batter was thick and soggy. Absolutely disgusting, we got our money back and will never go there again.

We stopped off on our way back from the coast, at this fish and chip shop in the centre of this attractive village. The fryers were all spick and span, and we enjoyed are fish, chips and mushy peas in our car.

Have tried numerous places for gluten free fish and it’s always been awful. This batter was Devine! Light, crisp and the fish was tasty! Don’t listen to the bad reviews, that was from the old management! The new chaps are working wonders!!!

I was very sceptical about ordering here after a not so great experience last year but I am so glad to have given the place another chance. Today I had the beef burger which was delicious and the caramelised onions I would eat with any meal. My colleagues had the Salmon and sausage & chips which were both equally good. We will 100% be back - only negative was both drinks were out of date.

The good selection of food was really well and freshly cooked. The whole place was spotless... SO much cleaner than under the lax management a few years ago ... and FAR nicer food. Don't take any notice of the bad reviews, they are from the disgruntled family of the former owner, who, as we know other villagers well, we are told were angry that thy could no longer sponge free food regularly. Very friendly and quick service... One of the best fish and chip shops I've ever visited.

Just ordered a large portion of chips 28/04, £3.30 for a box of burnt, shrivelled chips. To top it off they tasted like grit. Won't be using again.

This place is much improved since the new owners took over. Though the menu is much smaller than it used to be, the quality of the food is much better. The place looks fresher and cleaner than it used to as well. Fish seems fresh and batter is nice and crisp when I was there recently.

We visited the Botesdale Fish and Chip chop when in the area recently, and were astonished at the quality of the offering. All was very well presented in a beautiful recyclable box. The meal comprised salmon and prawns with a salad garnish and dips plus chips of course. All wonderfully fresh in good batter. I understand that the establishment has recently changed hands

since the take over this place has taken 99 steps back the food is crap mostly burnt the manager is very rude with the customers because i made a complaint he has band me from the shop dont know what happend to the customer allways right ihave been getting my saturday supper from this shop for10 years plus neather had any proplems with the former manager richard lewis .it herts me to see a buisnes go down just because of bad management.

Clearly states on their website and Google that they are open until 8 pm on a Sunday, I travelled from Diss to I make an order on a Sunday and on the door it says they are closed Sunday Monday and Tuesday. Hugely disappointing leaving a very hungry family at home.

How lovely to have mature, friendly staff behind the counter again and to be greeted with 'hello, how can I help you?' when you walk in! A far cry from my last visit over a year ago when I received such appalling customer service I vowed never to go back! On that occasion I was spoken to extremely rudely by the owner's wife, Natasha, when I dared to interrupt her chat with other staff members to ask if I could order since I'd been there a few minutes without acknowledgement. It's interesting to note that the Natasha to whom I refer has left rather a scathing review below (as have some of her friends and/or relatives) alluding to poor customer service from the new owners. Somewhat hypocritical and one can't help but wonder whether her review is more of a case of sour grapes! I will definitely be back now that Hugh and David are here! The food we had on Saturday was lovely - the fish was fresh and the batter light and crispy - and the customer service spot on!

Having not used this shop for over a year due to receiving the most appalling customer service we decided to give it a go now that it's under new management.Ordering online was relatively easy - I wanted to pre-order for collection and assumed I could do this at any time on the day but each time I tried the website was unresponsive until I attempted to order once the shop was open and then it was fine. Not sure if that was coincidence or if you can't order outside opening hours?The fish was fresh and the batter light and crispy but best of all I was greeted with a friendly 'hello, how can I help you?' by the lady behind the counter! A vast improvement on the sullen and inefficient teenagers and rude management of my last visit!

Well done to the new management. The haddock was one of the nicest I've had from a chip shop. Cooked to perfection, lovely flavour, with a nice light, crisp batter. The chips were good too. And all delivered to our door, with a friendly call to update us on delivery times.

Had haddock and chips twice last night (for 2 people not a one person double helping unfortunately..) Very good meal. The fish and batter were really tasty and cooked just right for me. Great to have the village chippy open again.

Ordered for a treat for our 3 families which we rarely do but wanted to do something nice for everyone.Collection was not an option but we were told delivery would only be an hour which was perfect.Delivery arrived on time, unfortunately half the chips were found to be missing from the order.Phoned to find out what had gone wrong, firstly got cut off, then told they would refund us. As I had paid cash to the driver I asked how they were going to do this? They then agreed to send the missing chips but said it would be another hour.The chips did turn up within the hour but of course too late to have with the fish. Our 'treat' for family was spoiled, no apology at all from Botesdale Chip Shop.Won't be using again.

Ordered last Friday in the hope it might have improved under new ownership. It was really poor; seriously disappointed. All cold, nothing crisp - neither batter nor chips. Quite possibly the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had.

Disappointing that they no longer deliver to Gislingham, used to order regularly and food was always good quality and a good temperature. Now we can't collect the food either, I know this is due to COVID but still we are 12 minutes away. Guess you have to live next door now for delivery.

Not ordered from here in ages got food tonight and all I have to say is I'm glad it's the new people food as never tasted so nice. out with the old and in with the new I say and I will be glad to go back again polite service and frendly it was all fresh well done to the new owners glad we have u now running the chip shop and couldn't believe how clean it was I don't think I've ever seen it look as good

My previous experience was of food that was OK, I wondered what difference the recent new management would make and am pleased to record that food quality has improved and I now rate as very good. I'll be back when I can return to Diss. Surprised to read that others have recorded poor impressions.

Under new management. Haven’t used the shop for well over a year and it was fantastic. Kebab cooked lovely and not burnt like it used to be. Staff was super friendly and welcomed up back with open arms. Will definitely be coming back.

Under new management. I placed my order- it all went through ok. Waited and waited. An hour and a half after ordering we phoned to see how long it will be as we have 2 diabetics in the house. They said it had left the shop. A little while later they phone back to tell me they have no french fries. Nearly 2 hours now and still no sign of my food. I phoned to ask where it was again.... very rude staff members!!! No customer service whatsoever! When my food arrived i said I would not be paying and the driver stepped in my house with no mask and took the food back! No apologies from anyone and now they have banned me!!!!?????? Bring back Richard, Natasha and Mike!!!

Ordered online and was expecting delivery around 70 mins later as per the website. Heard nothing so phoned up after an hour and a half. Was told that my order was on it’s way. Bearing in mind we’re only a quarter of a mile away the food should have arrived within 2 mins. 10 minutes later we phoned again to be told that it was now leaving (again). Phoned to complain and no effort was made whatsoever to rectify the situation. The food was finally delivered after TWO hours and we stated that we weren’t paying for it as it had taken far too long. The driver stepped in (not wearing a face mask) and took back the food, leaving two diabetics with no food. VERY poor customer service. No effort was made to atone for the errors made and in fact, we ended up banned for having the audacity to complain!

Terrible service since the new management took over. I had been using this chip shop for fifty years it’s an absolute shame to see it like this. Will not be using again unfortunately.

Update 19th Dec - New management seems very friendly and looking to fix what the previous owner had done. very friendly phone manner and appears to want to bring the business back to its former glory, I'll be giving them another try. ----- tldr - Half the pizza is deeppan thickness and uncooked dough, Ordered at 16:30 for delivery at 17:40. Food arrived at 8PM Worryingly this is the second time I've been phoned by someone clearly around or under legal working age. The previous order was handed to me by a very young girl. 17:47 Phonecall 1 - They call me, We only have diet coke and Cherry pepsi max, accept cherry order has 6 minutes to be delivered assume its on its way out. 18:33 Phonecall 2 - I call back -Order is delayed, very busy, will be arriving in the very near future. Order confirmed as delivered on the website, still no food. 19:30 - I speak to them a third time. Told they are short of delivery drivers tonight and the order is now going out 20:06 Pizza arrives, warm, undercooked and beaten up in the box. Ordered thin crust, half of the pizza is deeppan thickness and almost raw uncooked dough. 3 hours late and having a 1 half edible pizza, -1 edible pizza (Turns out also undercooked, and made the person who ate it unwell it seems) , some cardboard garlic bread but atleast the bottles of pepsi max cherry i didnt want was cold and sealed. Ignored the covid safe delivery option that was ticked. Any half decent business would have offered atleast some kind of compensation. If you can't complete orders within a timeframe don't accept orders. Such a shame to see a local business go down this road. It'll be the last time I consider ordering from here. Update - They deleted one of my previous orders and removed my feedback because it was poor. Sent them an email requesting a refund and the contact email was dead.

Food was cold, they had run out of food we ordered but waited till we were there to collect to advise us !!! It was very early in the eveing to have nothing to sell !!! The staff were fed up with the complaints that I heard whilst I was waiting !! Very sad this place could be a little gold mine if run properly

I feel very sad to be writing this. We have used this shop for food delivery for a long time, but unless I hear that they have got much better we won’t be doing so again.We had a few problems with our previous few orders, but gave things another try as anyone can have an odd off day.We hoped to eat around 7.00pm. The delivery service states it takes up to 70 minutes, and I have never found a way to get anything more specific. There were a couple of glitches as I ordered and I got my confirmation EMail at 6.03pm. Shortly after I had a call to say one item was unavailable. I chose something else and asked about the price difference as I had already paid. The girl told me I would have to pay the extra. When I pointed out that it was cheaper she said the driver would bring my change.The ‘tracking’ showed the food being prepared and nothing else. After 75 minutes I phoned to see what was happening. I was told that they were very busy and my order was just leaving. I am around 15 minutes away from the shop so it was going to be very late, especially if they had other calls on the way. I queried this and was told I was the first call.The tracking still didn’t move. We for our food around 25 minutes later.There is no way that they food we got had been freshly prepared 25 minutes earlier. My pizza was lukewarm and I had to re heat it, the chicken burgers were nearly cold but couldn’t be re heated easily. The chips were just about ok.It isn’t really acceptable to be told that food will arrive any time within 70 minutes, but for that 70 to increase to over 100 is just not on.Some time ago, with no warning whatsoever the normal( at the time) service charge of £3 was increased to £6 on one of my orders, and I didn’t notice until the next day. They never acknowledged my complaint or refunded that. At that stage the food was still ok and they later had free delivery.Unfortunately now it doesn’t seem worth the gamble on the time or food quality.

Waited 2 hrs for delivery after being told on the phone after an 1hr 20 mins it was on its way....10 mins away took 40 mins! Fish was tasteless and mushy n everything was cold. Very disappointed

After waiting almost 2 and a half hours and 5 phone calls later after the delivery time being 70 minutes our food finally arrived cold and without the salad, leaving us with a dry kebab and having to wait another 10 minutes reheating all the food again. I suggest that if you are short on delivery drivers, you don’t offer a delivery service, or at least let your customer know so they have a choice of picking it up or not going ahead with the order! Despite this the food in past experiences has always been good when we pick it up.

American squeeze cheese is not proper cheese!!!!!! It’s the easiest way to ruin a burger! May I suggest because we live in England you use what we call cheese.... or offer cheese in a tube as a alternative....

Was told a 70min wait which ended up being 120mins. Rang to complain but staff seemed too young to understand. We had a few cross words which takes the edge off the meal. Two very small rings of roe and we have never seen such small tiny pieces. This shop was once the best and could still be, too many youngsters working like headless chickens at our expense. So very sad and such a loss to our village.

Last month I made an order and they forgot the curry sauce, this month I made an order and it wouldn't let me select a time. I got onto food hub (the ppl who run the online ordering) for them to change it. I was 4 hours before my delivery time so plenty of time to sort it out. Nothing but automated responses for an hour. Then earlier than I wanted and even earlier than they had advertised by 40 minutes, my food turned up at the door. I told the delivery what had happened and she took the food away. I telephoned the shop to tell them what had happened and they were OK with delivering the food at the correct time.No worries, I thought. The food arrived at the right time, only one problem. IT WAS THE SAME LUKEWARM FOOD FROM 2 HOURS PREVIOUS. I could tell because everything in the bag was the same temperature, barely warm. Even the coleslaw had been cooked. I won't be going there again, my chicken and chips were as dry as a bone and gross because they had been sat for nearly 2 hours.I wouldn't reccomend this place to anyone, ever. One Disappointment after another.

A shop completely run by kids on their phone behind the counter, can’t even get a pizza order right and even when they do can’t fully cook it through. Kebabs are nasty aswell, all very poor quality

We usually arrive early am, & the owner is always polite, smiley & chatty. We have always enjoyed the superb fish & chips here, good quality haddock & cod, nice batter, great chips.Having seen the bad reviews we cannot understand them, as we would thoroughly recommend this chippy!

Found this little gen by accident when travelling back to work after seeing a sick friend. The cafe was clean and portions good. Although near their closing time, the person gave good old fashioned service. Now that I've found this place will use it again.

Complicated order dealt with wonderfully

Used to be a really good Fish and chip shop I have been giving this place benefit of the doubt for some time now. Not visiting often but still Going back all the same putting the last order down to a one off. I placed a telephone order for collection and Was told it would be 20-30 min, I walked down (2min walk) after 15 when I arrived it was wrapped up and bagged waiting for me. I ordered a mix kebab tonight and it was awful. The diner meat was like harden plastic, and the meat Was covered in bbq tasting sauce. The whole thing was cold, fatty and congealed.

Our kebabs arrived literally burnt and inedible. Had to throw all of it in the bin. Asked for a full refund, which the Manager said he would. Just waiting for the refund.Such a shame because the online system is user friendly, unfortunately the food is very poor.Worst takeaway I've ever encountered.

Our kebabs arrived literally burnt and inedible. Had to throw all of it in the bin. Asked for a full refund, which the Manager said he would. Just waiting for the refund. Such a shame because the online system is user friendly, unfortunately the food is very poor.

Lovely little shop which we've been going back to for years. Lots of choice and home delivery too. 🙂

Very nice gf fish and chips or sausages

Amazing! Really enjoyed their veggie burgers, chips, curry sauce and garlic mushrooms. Great food!
