Boswell's Cafe in Newport

I am always on the lookout for a good salad, and sometimes it's hard to find one in the UK, but I was pleasantly surprised at the delicious chicken salad that I had here. Lots of good ingredients and a generous size.

We soon found a seat in the restaurant, which was air-conditioned. There weren't menus on the table, but on boards on yhe walls. My friend had a bacon sandwich, which she said was excellant as was mine. We shared a fruit salad, which was excellent. We had lattes, mine was made with oat. Extremely good. We went back for coffee later and was good as the first. The atmosphere was good as were the staff.

I had ordered some vegetarian breakfast sandwich in the afternoon. The manager catered to my taste. He let me altered it .I had it made with scrambled egg whites & cooked mushrooms, etc. The way they cooked the mushrooms was so good ,the sandwich was very yummy 😋 They were busy ! I often passed by this place during my stay in Newport & always saw people having tables outside ,so I wanted to go there ,but my timings weren't good ,but I finally visited there ! They didn't disappoint !The staff & the manager were all very friendly & very polite & kind & working hard !! The prices were very affordable there & the atmosphere was very nice !! Very nice vibes ,too !! No wonder why they're popular !! I liked tables outside in the middle of the shopping center so that I could do people watching at the same time while having my meal / tea !! Lol.There were many tables inside as well. They had a big toilet inside ,too. I highly recommend this place !! If I lived in Newport ,this will be my lunch spot !!

Recent visits of past few months, I'd say have been let down with different staff members & never a thankyou for waiting when there has been a long que; can be of frustration to have to remind them of which drinks are included in the offer, of being along with a teacake purchase. One seems to have to ask at tillpoint another colleague before processing my order of said drink & as such on more than a few occasions doesn't seem to know what's certainly included as I do manage to order the hot drink I've initially asked for, eventually. Also recently seem to baffle them on asking for my own receipt after payment, to which they couldn't find between them so needed to call a Manager over to retrieve this from the till, I then mentioned to him I wasn't offered my receipt on initial payment, his response 'well perhaps she didn't ask you but 90% of people say no (they don't need their receipt)' do I take it as it's the customers job to ask then? Customer service skills persons needed, or taught to persons of frequent different faces I see recently.

Ordered chilli and chips, chips were rock hard and undercooked, chilli was nice but child size portion and Luke warm, tango drink was flat and warm, jacket potatoe was adequate but pathetic side salad was minuscule

What a drop in quality. I came for breakfast recently and was really impressed, even thanking the owner on the way out. Came back this morning and was excited to order an English breakfast. Overcooked sausages, bacon like leather that you could barely cut through (it seemed to be reheated), eggs with a horrible crispy base and mostly solid yokes. Toast was overcooked, almost like cracker read, one piece was actually burnt, I asked for the bread not to be cut in half and they forgot, so my breakfast got cold waiting on a replacement. I ordered a latte and what I got was barely milky at all. Honestly, only the beans were passable. This was disappointing and grim. To top it off, this joint is NOT cheap. What a fall from grace.

This has to be about the cleanest, safest place to eat in Newport. Every tray and table is sanitised between customers, all tables well distanced and all staff wearing masks properly. I had a hummus falafel and roasted vegetable flatbread that was served with a salad garnish, absolutely delicious. With this I had a pumpkin spiced latte with soya milk. It was fabulous and nicely warming. I highly recommend this gem of a place to everyone.

We were left waiting in the queue for over 10 mins without even any acknowledgement. Then after we got served the drinks were awful and the food toom too long to arrive. There was someone walking round cleaning tables but not social distancing. I was sitting while another man sat on the table next to me and moved his chair closer. The tables are way to close together.

Over priced. The food is quite good here but doesn’t warrant the price to go with it. They need to have few offers that attract customers.

We meet here on a monthly basis for breakfast, coffee and a catchup. Some of us have to make a journey of over an hour to get here. Breakfast is a real treat and the coffee is lovely. The staff are friendly and the toilets are clean. They also have wonderful cakes!

Met some friends for a bit of shopping followed by a good catch up and decided to pop in here for coffee. What a lovely place. Couldn't fault it. Just coffee turned into a 2 hour lunch. Some had soup, some jacket potatoes with various fillings and a panini. We actually stopped talking for a while because the food was that delicious and it was well priced. The staff were welcoming and very efficient. Had a thoroughly nice time and left with a promise to meet there again next time. This is going to be a firm favourite i think.

Very poor slow service. Too many people stood around not serving and only one till to pay at. Not aloud to pay at take away till for 2 drinks.

Carrot cake and latta, good all round standards ,clean and fast service fair pricing (unlike newport food festival,some stalls charging double the rrp) overall a good 4 stars for boswells

Worst breakfast in Newport £6.95 for dry sausages, crunchy chips eggs that wink at you Totally disgusting we won’t be coming back avoid at all costs

I was in town early and only wanted tea and toast. The staff member who served me was very efficient and friendly.The cafe was clean and the seating comfortable. Therewas nothing to complain about and I would certainly visit again.

This place is busy but churns out a bland fare to the shoppers in the centre. The staff are friendly but the system does not allow for a customers individual food requests.

We held our first Parkinson's cafe in Boswell's Newport where we welcomed people with Parkinson's to join us to meet others with the same ailment. Ven, the manager, could not have been more helpful and he and his staff did all they could to make things run smoothly for us. Our drinks and snacks were excellent and we could not fault the service. Many thanks for a happy afternoon and all the help!

Stopped here for a light lunch whilst shopping in Newport. Very efficient and friendly staff. Only had a panini and baguette but both were very tasty and reasonably priced. Only downside there was no salad with the baguette but was with the panini. Apart from that all ok. Nice and clean with good fast service.

Another great visit rainbow cake and pepsi max, service good, food good,management good what more could you ask for. Keep up the good work

For a simple cafe and coffee shop I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Took my not very mobile mother in there and the young woman we almost literally bumped into on the way in couldn't have been more helpful in finding us somewhere she could sit comfortably.

Another great place for a quick breakfast.

Lovely little place, friendly staff. I like to visit here when I'm in town, either for a cuppa or something more filling. Service always good.

What a truly rare Gem of a place in Newport.

Visited only for a quick baguette and a coffee, had the chicken and bacon with mozzarella melt .Sorry tasted more like plastic than food , pieces of processed chicken chunks and a few off cuts of bacon with the cheese nowhere to be seen , pathetic .I don't usually write reviews but had to in this case .Better off going to a burger van .never again .

I've been here a few times for a cuppa but this week I had lunch. There was a good selection on offer and my lasagne was tasty. The service was prompt and friendly. As a sweet treat I tried the caramel peanut shortbread - delicious. Boswells is a quiet, relaxing place with sofas as well as tables and chairs. Currently my fave lunch spot in Newport.

Me and my sister popped in for brunch today and we were hugely satisfied. The staff are so welcoming and lovely. The cafe is modern and very spacious with a variety of sized tables. The food came quick and was hot. No faults to our visit and we will definitely be back.

Visited 2 weeks ago whilst visiting with my wife. Friendly helpful staff/good service Enjoyable snacks with good options and reasonable pricing.

place looks nice and staff were friendly, coffee nothing special, nice range of food, prices ok. worth a stop if passing but wouldnt go out of my way.

Never seen this place quiet and finally stopped for a coffee. Good selection of toasted foods and hot meals , staff were friendly and plenty of seating in and out. Ordered soup whic was beautiful , came with croutons and basil on the side whic is great idea . Tea was good , my wife had a jacket and coffee . Good value

I am always pleased with my stops and feeds at this cafe.

We stopped here for a quick coffee and a little rest. The restaurant is inside the shopping centre and has easy access with seats inside and out. The staff were very friendly and the service was good. We will be back soon.

A lovely comfortable spot for a coffee if your shopping in Newport. Plenty of comfy seats available and a choice of drinks cold and hot food.

Lovely ice-cream and a good selectin of flavours. Hope thye change on a regualr basis as would live to see coconut and Rum & raisin stocked!

I was not acquainted with Newport city centre and had difficulty finding a suitable place to have a quick lunch, apart from the usual restaurant chains at Friar’s Walk Centre.

Had breakfast there today food was ok average quality very small portions as I didn't want chips or beans so I was left with bacon x3 egg x2 and sausage x2. on a massive plate. No toast unless I paid extra. My wife had the same plus two cups of tea but the bill was £18.00 . very expensive for what we had . There are much better restaurants close by...... Never again.

Middle aged man who took our order was very miserable. Other customers told us it’s because he wishes to retire (don’t we all!) Was overcharged for tea which was quickly rectified, especially as overpriced as it was. Food ok. Maybe more staff needed as most tables needed clearing/cleaning and there was quite a queue building up

My favourite coffee shop in Newport, fab coffee and great service. Nice location, easy access to shops, check it out !!

I have used this cafe several times, always good service and very wheelchair friendly. Special gluten free soup, all day vegetarian breakfast and good sized beverages. Staff have always been friendly and professional. This time tried a Mocha- wow that is how to serve this drink! see pics.

Boswells has become my local cafe. I come here whenever I visit Newport Town. Situated in Kingsway Shopping Centre it is well located. Friendly & attentive staff, clean environment with good seats & decor. I've eaten the tosted sandwiches and all day breakfasts as well as a number of drinks from tango ice blasts to deluxe caramel lattes. Staff accommodate to your needs. They have made me vegetarian all day breakfast despite it not being on the menu. There are toilets including a disabled/baby changing toilet. It is a recognised breastfeeding friendly cafe. The majority of customers are older or families, although anyone would be welcomed. They have a takeaway option with separate payment booth. The cafe serves all types of food & drink eg paninis, baked potatoes, home cooked meals & lots of tea, smoothie & soft drinks to name but a few items. The only negative I can give is that the prices could be about 10-20% cheaper.

Pleasant cafe with comfortable seats. Inside shopping centre so gives a welcome break from shopping.

Quite often have lunch at Boswells when out shopping in the town centre. Can be busy at peak times such as Saturday.

We've used this place a few times now and it's been as good each time. Good choice of light-and slightly less light- meals. Everything we've tried has been fine and we think good value for money. The staff are always very polite, very helpful and highly efficient- tables cleared and wiped down promptly even at busy times and food served promptly- and with a smile. And you don't get that everywhere these days ! Decor is pleasant and the cafe feels light and spacious. Good access for pushchairs or wheelchairs and as there is space inside, would be easy to get into position at a table. We've tried several places in Newport centre, including one nearby uninspiring department store cafe, and this is the best we've found.

This is a most excellent place to sit and watch the circus that is Newport Town Centre. There is always much to see and giggle at. The food is average, prices are not too bad and the staff are friendly enough.

£25 por 3 chaquetas y 3 bebidas. Muy caro. Lado ensalada muy pequeña y me quejé. No hay forma de negar que era popular como muy concurrida pero no usaría de nuevo.

Tomó 4 de nuestros nietos y nuestras dos hijas nadar en el centro de Newport esta mañana y necesitábamos un lugar para comer después. Una búsqueda en tripadvisor llegó con Boswells - qué buen hallazgo! No parece en principio que había espacio para sentarse todos juntos 8 de nosotros, pero en ningún momento apareció personal y empezó a mover las mesas para hacer espacio para todos juntos. El menú variado significaba que todo el mundo (de 4 a 77! ) podría encontrar algo a su gusto, al final el 4 adultos instalados para el desayuno el día que fue disfrutado por todos. En todo momento el personal aquí y en la piscina era muy atento, lo que hizo que nuestro medio día a largo plazo fuera muy agradable.

As always very good staff and service venn runs a tight ship (manager) only had a soft drink today but this is a regular stop when im in newport

My husband and I ate here at lunchtime a couple of weeks ago. I eat here regularly but it's usually the teacake and latte offer, this time we had a jacket potato and my husband had a side-salad with his jacket; we had a latte and americano to drink. The jacket was big, well - cooked and loads of cheese on mine - very tasty, very filling.Boswell's also have a card which is stamped for every coffee you have. As mine was full, my latte was free.

Sat in here and ordered dinner. The seats were very comfortable, and we leaned back and ignored the noise that was trying to get in. The food was delivered to our table,and it was acceptable for the price.

Great cafe/restaurant. Visited multiple times over the last 3 years. Great selection of food. Always clean, toilet facilities always clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Cannot fault it.

Ok if you have no taste buds and put a peg on your nose, it smelt really bad of grease, the coffee was a supermarkets own brand and not good. It didn't feel very clean either. The people were polite and friendly.

An area not familiar with, needed a coffee, found Boswells, looked good and certainly was. very popular very busy which means it's obviously good. Food products excellent, so much to choose from. excellent Staff, very efficient, premises clean and tidy. Tables cleared promptly. Many thanks for a nice break.

Walked past here too many times to count without actually going in, not being a coffee person. However, found myself in Newport on a dreary afternoon and decided to pop in as it looks very warm and inviting. I was immediately surprised by the larger menu they have inside rather than just baguettes and jacket potatoes. I opted for a baked lasagna, with a side of chips, moderately priced, which ended up being WAY above my expectations (having had many a lasagna in many a place). The cake selection was wicked, very different to what I'm used to in places like this, so too a few to go also. The place was clean, inviting, able to watch the world go by in peace, hoe a coffee shop should be. You could easily sit down and read or work, unlike your Costa's and Starbucks. But the best thing about the place was the staff... VERY attentive, warm and funny, couldn't help enough and were willing to stop and talk and answer some questions, even making conversation that didn't seem forced. Even the manager came out to chat and offer some suggestions on the cakes. Definitely going again!!

I must have walked past Boswell's a thousand times and wondered what it was like, so taking my daughter to the nearby library on a Thursday has at last given me the chance to try it out.Why haven't I been before?! The flat white coffee is delicious, and the Peri Peri chicken flatbread I had in November was really tasty. Both the food and drink are attractively priced, and I look forward to going through more of their menu in the coming months.Seating is comfy and you can sit 'outside' to people watch, though the Kingsway shopping centre isn't exactly central Paris. Recommended for a mid-shop sit down with a drink and cake, or a quick bite at a good price. They do take-outs too!

Very good coffee staff very friendly and nice surroundings always polite and willing to help never had a bad experience,the tuna melts and there chips always fresh and filling

I have recently tried their breakfast and it was good! The sausage actually had some meat and flavour!But my favourites are the filled potato skins with bacon and the cheese and bacon baguette, both great value and flavour.

Called in the Kingsway centre and popped in here for a coffee and a cake good flavour coffee with really nice selection of cakes very good

Classy and tasty breakfast Went there a few times whilst working on the Newport New shopping center. A charm-full and very relaxing place also.

I popped into the cafe for coffee to while away some time waiting for the Passport Office. I hadn't expected to find such a great cup of coffee. There were wonderfully comfortable leather sofas and bucket chairs; no wonder the place was full of happy customers.I wouldn't normally write a review for coffee but this Cafe warrants exceptional praise due to their fantastic staff. My waitress was called Pricilla; she was Spanish and so friendly and helpful. However, my attention was drawn to Pricilla and her colleagues when a small group of blind customers came in. Not only did they guide them through the food line, they made sure that there was nothing in their way at their tables. They even put sugar in their coffees, stirred it for them and then told the customers where they had positioned the cups and plates. That takes a special kind of person to show such kindness and humanity. It took but a few minutes out of their day but I am sure made the visit for that group very pleasurable. It looked like this venue is a favourite with the locals and I can certainly see why.
