Stopped for a late lunch so it was fairly quiet. We all had cheese toasties and coffee. The food came quickly and was freshly made, hot and tasty. The coffee was prepared quickly and bought to our table. Nice atmosphere. Will come again. Thank you.

Awful lunch. Struggled to order our meal to begin with, then took a while for the food to arrive. The mint tea was so bad we asked to switch it. The server said it wasn’t a problem and took a new order but never returned! There were no options for myself and my son for a vegan lunch except for hummus. The staff didn’t know what ingredients were in the meals. Then we all went down to the supermarket and found better sandwiches for far cheaper. I would really advise against going here.

A reasonably priced and tasty breakfast. Very handy for Penrith station, if you want breakfast before travelling on. Good quality sausages and bacon. An extra sausage would have been appreciated as it only came with one. A small complaint, but it came with the small bush tomatoes which burst open squirting tomato juice when cut into. Ideal for a game of Russian roulette whilst dining. Nice views of the Lake District in the distance.

Terrible. Ordered Breakfast ( brunch ) at 11.24am and were warned there was a 20 minute delay ( acceptable ). After 30 minutes we were told that fresh tea would be brought to us and the breakfast would be ready soon. No tea arrived. The breakfast arrived at 12.37 ( 1 hour and 13 minutes ) with another offer of free tea ( which again did not arrive ). We left is disgust and will not be back. I sent an email of complaint - got an automated response saying someone would be in touch soon - still waiting - the silence is deafening !!!!!! Never again.

We visited Booths on a busy Saturday morning. It was clear from the start that there were insufficient staff as the queue progressed slowly, tables weren’t being cleared and there didn’t appear to be anyone in charge. There only appeared to be three members of staff who were working as quickly as they could but were clearly under pressure with customers who had already ordered food and bought drinks, returning to the counter asking about their food order. We ordered two toasted sandwiches and hot drinks. The food took so long in arriving, we had finished our drinks and in any event, the wrong food was brought to our table by an extremely flustered member of staff. When the right food eventually arrived, it was of very poor quality indeed. Come on Booths…find more staff. As we live abroad, it’s unlikely we would visit again but there are better alternatives available in Penrith.

! . Went to Booth for breakfast with family around 9am. Only one person on the counter so they were making the coffees and taking orders. Terrible customer service. Practically barking at us when asking for choices of bread for toast. No smiles, no please and thank you’s and when asking for any amends to breakfasts, a lot of huffing and puffing about “how long it takes to key in” - not my problem! Then asked for additional salmon on my scrambled eggs, she huffed into the kitchen and came back saying: “you can’t have salmon because we haven’t got any” - charming. God help anyone who wanted a jacket potato with salmon later that day that was advertised on a board right by the till. I commented to a gentleman next to me about how awful the customer service was and even he said: “this isn’t what you expected from Booths”. Again more eye rolling and huffing when I asked for my parents coffee in the round jugs as opposed the square ones. They’re in their late 70’s / early 80’s and the square mugs mean they often spill hot coffee on themselves. Appalling response and behaviour when merely asking her to pick up a different cup to make the coffee in. A shame really. The main shop is faultless, friendly, pristine and welcoming.

I have been attending Booths cafe for the last 2 1/2 years with my children. There used to be a room upstairs in the cafe that was fitted for families. TV screens with games, suitable seating, doors that could be closed so your toddlers could walk around but not escape. Slowly they have become less and less family friendly without admitting it to the customers. The TV’s went, we were told they were being updated/replaced, the seating has been replaced and the doors are no longer able to close. We were told today that we could not take our toddler and baby food in there even though we were planning to buy all our own food and coffees from the cafe.Very disappointed in Booths, not a family friendly store at all. Will no longer be shopping or attending their cafe in future.

We chose Booths cafe over all the others in Penrith, thinking the produce would be good since I shop there quite often and know they have good stuff. In fact it was mediocre at best, like a quick service station meal on the motorway or even a school dinner rather than living up to the Booths name. There wasn't really much on the menu (the one online must be a generic menu for all stores because most of the things on it weren't anywhere to be seen at Penrith). The tables were filthy too and no-one seemed to be wiping them after customers had left. A week after our rather disappointing lunch we received a parking fine (£100 or £50 if paid within 7 days) because we were in the cafe for just over 2 hours. We understand the need for a time limit to ensure genuine Booths customers can find spaces to park, but 2 hours is just not long enough, especially if you've ordered hot food which needs to be cooked. There should perhaps be a system in place that allows diners longer. Needless to say we won't be returning to Booths, to eat or to shop. I advise you go to Sainsburys if you want to pop to a cafe after your shopping, because they allow 3 hours parking which is much more reasonable. So disappointed in you Booths.

It was barely half full and reading the reviews and from personal experience I can see why. Sandwich selection today particularly poor, sunk if you did not like egg mayonaise. It would be worth them consulting a time management guru and re writing the training manual! Also why let customers who have got free takeaway coffee from the shop floor occupy seats in the restaurant. Sorry the whole concept needs a good shake up.

Drove over to Penrith simply because the kids fancied themselves having a drink and a cake in this upmarket grocery store. Ha. Upmarket? Yeah right. The store itself always has great produce and the staff are very helpful (particularly the cheese counter). Venture upstairs to an absolute shambles. Thank heaven for our saving grace serving the drinks - well, serving everything, really. The cakes on display were hacked to pieces, the serving knives were covered in remnants of the previous slice all the way up the handles. There were no plates, when these did eventually arrive (we had to ask) they were still dirty and wet. The Victoria sponge looked like it was from last week. The chocolate cake was very, very sickly. No one knew how to make an iced latte. We had to ask for forks (the gormless shuffling teenager with dirty shoes, trousers and untucked shirt told me that they actually didn't have any at the moment - WELL GO AND WASH ONE THEN). He (oh, yes, badge said 'Santa's little helper' - this is April, remember) was aimlessly moving dirty cups and plates from one pile to another but not achieving anything. This was at a piled up central station - not actually clearing any tables. After enough time to forge a new fork, half a dozen stained and still-wet forks appeared but Sana's little helper obviously didn't think it within his remit to bring any over to the table which requested them; I went for some and immediately had to ask him to clean them again. He didn't appear to understand the comcept of clean, or why I'd want them clean. Customers were having to sit at tables which hadn't been cleared of previous occupants' detritus. The espresso itself, I have to say, was good. The whole atmosphere, clenliness and attitude of all the staff there except the one girl on the counter (Amy, I think) was completely unacceptable in today's customer centric society. Will I be back? To the store - yes, because the produce is so different and so good. To the cafe - absolutely NOT. The whole cafe was a complete and utter disgrace and embarrassment to the excellence delivered downstairs. Grossly, grossly disappointing.

The quality used to be good but not anymore. The sausages used to be a small Cumberland ring, now two not very nice sausages. I have never seen such small rashes of bacon. There was no mushrooms but four tomatoes halves (a bit over the top). The toast just thrown on top of the breakfast. A side plate would have been nice. We waited ages for it to arrive. When getting the tea at the counter, there was only one girl making drinks, taking orders and taking the money. When on the next table they had a breakfast delivered, the girl said the delay was because she went into the store to get the mushrooms and it appears that we were overdosed on tomatoes because they had run out of mushrooms. This was to make up the breakfast items. That choice should have been ours to make. We will not be going there again. I don't know whether its due to a change of management or what, but we will certainly have a change of venue. You need to do something quick Booths. The menu is sparse, the service poor, the food poor. Don't go.

On cross-border journeys I usually refuel at Morrison's in Penrith to avoid paying silly M6 service station prices. Felt in need of breakfast, and Morrison's is usually a tad depressing on that front. Wandered over to Booth's, lured by its Waitrose-like reputation, and made my way up to the first-floor cafeteria. Top marks for the breakfast, which was freshly-cooked, accompanied by a gut-busting pile of decent toast, and scored highly on the price to value ratio.

My partner and I went here today (31st March) for the Afternoon Tea. I paid for the afternoon tea at the tills and was given a table number and receipt from the server who advised me it would be out in "a few minutes". We waited 25 minutes just for the pot of tea to arrive (which was Tetley and not the loose leaf tea as advertised). We then waited a further 10 minutes for the actual food to arrive (bearing in mind nothing was warm or had to be made fresh as the scones and cakes were already on display). The actual sandwiches and cakes were very nice and the food was pleasant however when my partner went to ask for raspberry jam instead of the blackcurrant we were given the server's response was "oh I'm just trying to get out of here my finishing time is getting later and later". She said this in jest but because we'd already had poor service we felt like a hindrance to them and did not feel this was appropriate thing to say in a customer service role. Despite the fact that there were adequate staff on for the busyness of the cafe they were very slow to clear tables and serve people. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars and not 1 was because the food was nice.

Arrived just after the lunchtime rush, inspired by another reviewers comment on the good views. Turned out the view is of Morrisons. Limited lunch menu, I ordered a baked potato with salmon and creme fraîche. The portion size was good, but it needed proper seasoning and was uninspiring. No glasses in evidence for my Coke. Service was, well, Ok.

It's been a while since we ate here, in the past it's been a bit hit and miss, I understand they've had issues getting things right, yesterday we visited and it was busy, we ordered 3 main courses which arrived after 20minutes, not bad I think considering how busy it was, I've got to say it's the best meals we've had, sausage and mash with onion gravy which was lovely, hot and well presented, burger and chips with a nice salad and coleslaw, big portions, locally sourced. Hot chocolate, which was HOT. Well done and keep up the good work.

I went to this establishment on Tuesday the 20th of December for breakfast. I asked for sausage, bacon, beans and egg, the girl asked if I wanted my egg scrambled or fried, I said fried please. I then waited 20 mins watching people who had been behind me in the queue being served their food. At last here it was. The sausages were over done and like rubber the beans were dried up without any sauce and the egg was SCRAMBLED, and very badly scrambled. NEVER AGAIN!

We recently visited this cafe whilst staying in Penrith it's was quite busy when we visited the staff where lovely the supervisor ( Robin or something like that) made a real effort with my little girl as she was sulking and she gave her the table number to look after. They had a good cake selections and a little area for children so at least the other customers didn't have to witness my daughters 'hissy fit'. When we order food we did get told there was a wait for food (but we didn't have to wait as long they said it would be) it's just basic cafe food great for kids and a light bite over lunch. The only thing I would say was cafe is far to hot as it was fairly hot outside. Overall a lovely cafe with great staff and good food! Would definitely come back if we where visiting Penrith again. Thanks Hayley and family..

On a visit to Penrith so we thought we would pop into the Booths Cafe on the way back to the station for a coffee. It was a very warm afternoon and we noticed that there is a balcony which would have been good to sit out on to enjoy our coffee but it is locked out of use. We found a seat (and avoid the bench seats, they are very uncomfortable) but were appalled at the amount of debris on the floor of the place. A number of previous customers must have dropped food items but there had been no attempt by the staff to clear up these pieces of bread, cake and what looked like jam. Coffee and scones were to the usual Booths standard but the environment leaves a lot to be desired.

I wouldn't do my main shopping here because of the prices... they have even tightened up on the reductions in 'scrounger's corner' where end of date stuff is just pennies off. They also favour what imho are misleading price reduction signage allover the store, e.g. a £1 sign over an item... which on closer inspection is actually simply £1 off a higher price. I wonder how many folk are making mistakes with this style of advert (which at some point I believe supermarkets will be banned from doing!). Occasionally though there are fairly good offers to be had - but some may clear off the shelves before you get them. Fresh meat and fish quality is good here. Artisan style bread also good. At weekends (if you have a Booths Loyalty card) you can get a free paper with a £10 minimum shop...a good deal when the Sunday Times is £2.40.

I have been coming to the lakes and visiting Booths for my groceries for quite some years now. The food is mainly locally sourced and although it might cost a little more than the average supermarket it really is worth paying the difference for the quality of food available. If my family and I lived nearer we would visit Booths at least once a week for treats and non essentials, but gorgeous food which is just streets above the rest. Can't fault this place and the staff are very helpful and really friendly.

We visited Booths cafe on our way home from Scotland. Having previously lived in the North West we were big fans of Booths and their food, however this cafe was disappointing. Despite not being very busy, we were informed that there was a 30 min wait for the chips to accompany our toasted sandwiches. A chap in front of me was also told it was a 30 min wait for jacket potatoes. As I was waiting for our toasted sandwiches, the wait had gone up to 40 mins despite there being less people in the cafe. There were also a number of items unavailable on the menu. It was obvious that staffing was an issue yet they maintained that it was because they were busy. Tables remained dirty and uncleared. Whilst in the queue I noticed one server empty a bin, replace the bin bag and then return to serve food / drinks without washing her hands, despite hand washing facilities being available.Think we'll try the cafe at Cranstons next time.

We were in the café fairly early so there was not much of a queue - the staff were friendly enough and we got a free coffee because we have a loyalty card. BUT - we ordered two fairly simple breakfasts and they took over 30 minutes to come to our table, by which time we'd both finished our coffees.. 1. "Artisan Spicy Beans on Toast" - was not spicy, was cold & glutenous, no butter on the thick dry toast. Miserable... 2. "Sausage & Egg Stottie" on brown - came and was cold, the egg was solid, the sausages hard and the roll (not stottie) was white. I complained about this second meal - complimentary coffees were offered while we waited ... and accepted - the replacement meal arrived and the egg was virtually raw and the sausages undercooked but I suppose I should be grateful that it came in about 3 minutes. I had to eat it with a knife & fork because the roll (not stottie) wasn't big enough to hold the contents. Awful. I honestly don't complain very much but we won't be going back here in a hurry. SO disappointed!!!

I wouldn't be so happy if I bought the coffee as it is over roasted. Lovely setting with views over morrisons to the northern Pennines. Home made chips are to die for, the Aberdeen Angus burger was excellent and the fish & chips look good, there is 2 or 3 specials on the board and baked potatoes with various fillings, soup, eggs benedict on toast or a veggie dish available, there is a good choice for the children as well, the only thing is you have a bit of a wait and your hot drinks are cold by the time your food arrives. Staff very pleasant and able to cope when it gets busy unlike the kitchen! There is a playroom to keep the children busy and some cosy seating if thats what you prefer, we did find the restaurant rather chilly, really needed to be a bit warmer!

Soup saved straight away tasted okay but messily presented. Tea was stewed and over strong. Had to wait half an hour for jacket potato and tuna. Partner ordered poached egg and smoked salmon bagel which came a good time after my order. My tuna tasted awful and my partner returned her meal as the bagel was burnt and the poached egg was solid. In there favour they were happy to replace without question but, after waiting another quarter of an hour we asked for our money back as travel time was running out. Popped into the Morrisons cafe, for a spot of lunch before travelling home. I selected the ultimate fish and chips, the picture showed a piece of fish that hung over the sides at both ends of the plate, with stacks of chips. My wife asked if I would like bread and butter as well, I replied no looking at the size of that fish it would just be pure greed, My wife ordered the smaller portion for herself. When it arrived my portion of fish sat comfortably on the plate not even touching the sides of it. The chips were a child's portion at best. My wife's was served up on what can only described as a side plate, and it didn't even fill that. Probably the last time I will consider thinking about popping in there, a shame as we are regularly in Penrith, I would say 4-5 days a month.
