This is the best asian fusion food we have had in Brighton , and I'm not even vegan..the tempura Cauliflower was Soo delicious and tender yet crispy. The Pork rolls was full of flavour and the Bincho Chicken was pretty convincing too . We had 6 between us and if we had time I think we would be tempted for the tasting set menu next time we visit .

My second visit, after a year or two, but I'm afraid this time was not so good. An assault of the senses! Just too too many flavours going on, with an overpowering saltiness. While an admirable effort is made to make "meaty" vegan food, the "chicken skewer" just felt like burnt salty soya protein. However the cauli tempura was great, as was the deep-fried tofu. All said, the staff were lovely. I just can't justify the not insignificant cost to go there again, what with all the choices Brighton has to offer.

The famous "fish" was salty to the point of being inedible, the chicken wasn't any better than the average Chinese vegan supermarket vegetable protein based imitation meats. Too many members of staff for the size of the place. Excellent soft drinks. Nice music but way too loud.

What sets Bonsai Plant Kitchen apart is not just the food (or the cosy but vibey atmosphere), but the friendly and attentive staff who check in at the right times and always give the right advice in choosing a dish. Each plate is so thoughtfully crafted with the most unexpected ingredients (esp. the Hanoi “pork” spring roll) and combinations (the dirty rice 😋) - this restaurant is a must-visit. I recently had dinner at Bonsai restaurant. The food was exceptionally great and I would highly recommend. No dish was disappointing and truly unique. The service on the other hand was seriously lacking. They failed to bring all our ordered food and drinks, and tried to clear the table even before our dinner was complete. In such a small space with an open kitchen the staff failed to communicate. To top it all off they put the bill on the table even before we had finished. Made the remainder of the evening awkward as we felt in the way. So in my opinion, with a little more effort and attention to customer service, this place would be exceptional.

A Must-Visit! We had the most incredible dining experience at Bonsai Restaurant in Brighton. The food was nothing short of amazing – honestly, the best we’ve ever had! We opted for the set menu, and every dish was a delight. The service was fast and efficient, and the flavors were out of this world. My personal favorite was the aubergine and the “fake chicken” – it was so convincing that my partner couldn’t even tell it wasn’t real meat! Misleading for Coeliacs. We had a lovely experience with friends. Great ambience, nice staff - however, the food menu was misleading in the lead up to the visit. My partner is coeliac and we always pre-check the menus. The menu was littered with GF options - which is always a fabulous feeling! On arrival we re-informed the team of her status and they couldn’t guarantee the dishes were GF (due to using the same grill and fryer for preparing). This meant we only had the choice of 2 cold plates, as well as 1 rice and the starters. Guys - if your food isn’t truly GF - then don’t advertise as so! (OR, just have a coeliac friendly grill/fryer). We understand we often won’t be able to have the selection of a full menu - but cooked versions would be nice!! The place is great and the people are lovely but this was an issue on our evening. Highly recommend to others without same dietary requirements as food was yummy!

A vegan flavour explosion in a buzzing yet intimate atmosphere! The Korean dressed kale tastes so simple yet complex, the Miso glazed aubergine melts in your mouth, while the chef's selection of pickles adds a kick . The star of the show was the scorched rice — hard to explain, you just gotta try it. We opted for alcohol free drinks: the mocktail was just as complex in flavour as the food, but we'd return for the tepache alone. Daydreaming of our next meal there! Two acidental foodies

This place is incredible if you are a meat eater wanting rich vegan meaty food. BUT, as good as the fake chicken etc. is, it is highly processed food, and this combined with the rich sauces to leave you feeling quite sick. I’ve been here twice so far with my boyfriend and we’ve now made it a tradition of ours to go whenever we get our student loan. The workers are always helpful and kind. Service is quick. There is not one dish on the menu that has left me disappointed. Everything we’ve had there is so scrumptious. And for how good the food is, the prices aren’t bad at all. We usually end up paying £20-25 each but we leave with our bellies full and happy. I recommend this restaurant to everyone, especially if you’re not vegan. EDIT: After 2 years we finally returned to Bonsai for my birthday! Yippee! To start, they were so understanding when I had to move my booking and add an extra person on late notice. We let them know we have a sesame allergy in our party and they were so accommodating. They made us a special menu so we can see which dishes are suitable. I love the atmosphere at bonsai, a little hip, not pretentious, and great music. Perfect for a dinner before a night out. The food was the star, though. We tried A LOT of dishes, but my absolute favorites were the Hanoi “Pork” Spring Roll, Crispy Tofu Malaysian Satay, and Spicy Tempura Cauliflower. The Hanoi “Pork” Spring Roll was incredible - the flavors were rich, and it had this crispy texture on the outside with a perfect balance of spices inside. And it really did taste like pork. The Crispy Tofu Malaysian Satay was another winner. I loved the way the tofu was cooked; it was crunchy on the outside and tender inside, with a satay sauce that was so spicy and nutty. And then, the Spicy Tempura Cauliflower... it was addictive! Perfectly fried with a kick of heat, each bite was packed with flavor. Each dish was so texturally satisfying too. Oh my god and the cocktails? OUT OF THIS WORLD! They really went all out with creative, refreshing, cool flavours. My favorite was the Kaffir Lime Rum Punch - it was super refreshing with a nice, tangy flavor, balanced perfectly with a hint of sweetness. It’s the kind of drink you just keep wanting more of. The garnishes of each cocktail really stood out to me, the way they’re placed on top of the glasses so that with each sip the scent captivates you. Bonsai Plant Kitchen really made the night special, and we left feeling so happy (and full). Definitely going to be thinking about it for the foreseeable future.

I went to dinner at a much-talked about award-winning vegan restaurant in Brighton. I got it from homemade pickles. Crispy vegetables and a refreshing taste with a strong sourness. Edamame has a spicy and addictive taste. Fish tempura is just like real white fish! I was surprised at how delicious and the taste it was. Yakitori has a firm meat quality, but it is not meaty and is healthy. It's packed with flavor and has a chewy texture that makes you feel like you're eating yakitori. We also had homemade cocktails and beer, which were also very delicious. This time we ate inside, but we were also shown the lovely courtyard seating outside. The photo mural painted by a Japanese artist has so many details that you can't help but exclaim, "It's so cute!" It's sure to make you want to come with your friends! Every dish was fantastic - incredible flavour and innovative approach. Honestly couldn't believe it was all vegan, and dishes lost nothing from their meat alternative. I'd happily come again and again for such taste. However, as others have said, the service went from good to poor by the end of the night. We'd booked a table for 8:15, so it was hardly late, but by the time it came to dessert an hour later, nobody was around to take our order or check on drinks. This was despite the restaurant being nearly empty. We had to find someone to take an order, then chase for drinks, and chase again for the bill - although the manager was very friendly then. It seemed the staff were all a bit too focused on closing and heading out for their Saturday nights rather than serving those that were spending theirs at Bonsai. At £100 a head, I'd expect consistent, quality service along with the food. Please fix this, we'd love to come back otherwise.

Initially the service was a bit slow - to take our order and then quite a wait before our drinks arrived. But one bite of the Napa Cabbage and any irritations were banished. The food is as fantastic as everyone says ...the wine too once it arrived! We were one vegan, one non-vegan. Both agreed it was some of the best food we’d ever had. The only negative was that smoking is allowed in the outside area - this isn’t mentioned on the website or on the phone when booking. The garden is very small so there’s no getting away from it if other groups are smoking. Fortunately the couple next to us only smoked at the end of their meal.

I was suggested to have 3-4 dishes for one person, I chose 3 and glad I did because it was plenty! I ended up taking half home for leftovers. I probably wouldn’t come here alone again, as I think the dishes are more designed to be shared and it was pretty fancy inside. But I’ll definitely be bringing friends here when they visit! Only downside is that it took a while for anyone to notice that I had finished my meal and was ready to go home. I had been reading for at least 10 minutes without touching my food before I had to catch someone’s eye to get a doggy bag and the bill. But overall it was a fantastic lunch (and dinner at home).

We went to celebrate a dear friend's birthday, she a vegan, me an omnivore who eats vegan several days each week. As such we've both eaten out countless times on an all-vegan basis and I'm going to make a strident comment - this is the best vegetarian / vegan food that I've ever had. I love food and I'll happily eat most things but it takes something special to delight me. As such I think my expectations were set somewhat moderately but from the first mouthful of the 'lamb' skewers it was clear that this was something special. The 'chicken' skewers only reinforced the point, along with the brioche buns / burgers (outrageously nice!), the two different types of rice and the corn on the cob. It was a riot of flavours, beautifully combined with amazing textures, the 'meat' items being based on pea protein which works superbly well. I hesitate to compare it to omnivorous fare because this really is its own thing and doesn't need to be aspirational in that regard but omnivores won't want for anything at Bonsai. The service was fantastic, the lady had an expert command of the menu, spoke authoritatively and was very friendly. The restaurant is a lovely place to be, open kitchen and all. I'm confident that my friend would endorse this review and we strongly recommend that you pay them a visit as soon as you can. Just ... wow! A++

As a vegan who used to quite like seafood I've come to accept that I'll never have a vegan dish that quite replicates that flavour and texture. That was until I had the 'sea bream' at bonsai plant kitchen. I've had really good tofish before but this is on another level entirely. Honestly everything we ate tonight was phenomenal ('pork' spring rolls were also divine), and whoever composed this menu is a genius wizard. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, and I look forward to trying the rest of the menu!

Absolutely fantastic, everything is right...ambience, casual feel, food, creativity... For vegetarians it is a chance to get away from nut cutlets, cauliflower steaks and so one. Real, authentic flavours with a novel twist. I can recommend the sliders, yum.

Visited Bonsai Kitchen on a weekend trip to Brighton…some of the best vegan food I’ve had in a long time! Menu was varied and everything tasted fantastic. Great vibes and friendly staff. Cocktail choices were also 10/10.

Came here with a few friends, one of us is lactose and the other are all meat eaters! The fact that all of the menu was plant based was fantastic! Everything was so flavourful and well executed! Service was smooth and everyone was supper friendly. Fair prices for what you got, it is alittle expensive but with minimum wage going up as well as food Costs it makes sense. All in all was a brilliant experience and we will definitely be going back for more! So many more choices I want to try

I took my kids (7 and 13) for a saturday lunch as they don't accept kids in the evening. We loved it. Such wonderful food. We've experienced the past incarnation so were a bit disappointed that there weren't any proper baos on the menu. But the tastes and dishes were fabulous so almost made up for that! The aubergine was beautiful, the 'chicken' skewers were lovely and perfectly bbq'd. We were sceptical about the dough balls but they were great to share between the 3 of us (possibly a little too sweet to have a whole portion of). We'll definitely be back.

We went for lunch here as a group of friends with our two dogs which were allowed in the garden. The garden wasn't the prettiest but is enclosed and we had it to ourselves which meant it felt very private. The food here was absolutely stunning, we ordered about 10 different dishes and shared them between us all, as recommended by our server who was lovely! The variety and quality of the menu was excellent and the food was so good we ordered more of some of the dishes when we'd finished them. The service was great, attentive but not fussy and we didn't feel ignored being outside at all, just left to enjoy our food. We can't wait to go back. Oh and you definitely don't need to be vegan to appreciate how good their food is!

We ate here last night for the first time. I'd heard nothing but good so had high expectations. We ordered 8 small plates (we're greedy) which were all amazing, some of the best vegan Asian food I've ever had! I went with my non vegan husband and he agreed. Stand out dishes were the pickles & kimchi (simple but so good), the Hanoi 'pork' spring rolls with pickled apple and the tempura 'sea bream' with mango and dill salad & togarashi mayo. We also had the special, which was salt n pepper Lions Mane mushrooms. Incredible flavours, every mouthful was a taste bomb, and scarily realistic vegan meat & fish. Also a good variety of veg based dishes if fake meat isn't your thing. The cocktails looked great too. Highly recommend.

It was our first time trying out food on this restaurant. Our first impression was good as we looked at different options on the menue. When we received our food, my husband had ordered rice with different vegetables on it and as he expected food to be served warm, it come slightly cold, and he went to ask if it can be warmed up slightly. The lady behind the counter said that they do not have microwave and in fact she said the food is always kept on the room temperature. This made me slightly worried as restaurant serves rice and seaweed wrap that should not be kept out of fridge. However I did not think of it much at the time and carried on enjoying our meal. Same night after my meal I started to feel unwell and was up all night being nauseas and vomiting. There was noughing else that could have caused it but the food I ate there. It was so unpleasant experience that I promised to myself I would never eat there and be extra cautious when eating out next time.

Eaten here many times, always delicious! It has the golden trio of being delicious, healthy and not too expensive! The tacos are absolutely lush and an absolute bargain! The poke bowls are the best in Brighton and the staff are always friendly and attentive. Fresh vibrant flavours whilst also feeling decadent, a rare combo!

Don't go here if you want romantic or if you want to dress up or you want space, what you get though is fantastic food, the cauliflower, tofu, chicken breast, chicken skins, aubergine etc all lip smacking delicious 😋 lots of small plates so you can sample lots of dishes, great service and a great buzz, not the cheapest night out, but absolutely worth it. If you are thinking about going on a Friday or Saturday, then you need to look a month to 2 months ahead. The only issue was trying to book online for the first time, a painful experience 😫

My fiancé and I have visited the cafe twice now for afternoon tea, a Studio Ghibli themed one and a Valentines one, and it is such a great experience! We have to travel nearly an hour to get there but it is 100% worth it! The food is amazing, the staff are wonderful and the atmosphere is so peaceful. I would highly recommend and we can’t wait to go back soon!
