Excellent vegan Asian small plates. Crispy tofu especially good. Not the cheapest but 75 for two including service and alcohol not unreasonable either. Well worth a visit.

I’ve been here twice so far with my boyfriend and we’ve now made it a tradition of ours to go whenever we get our student loan. The workers are always helpful and kind. Service is quick. There is not one dish on the menu that has left me disappointed. Everything we’ve had there is so scrumptious. And for how good the food is, the prices aren’t bad at all. We usually end up paying £20-25 each but we leave with our bellies full and happy. I recommend this restaurant to everyone, especially if you’re not vegan. EDIT: After 2 years we finally returned to Bonsai for my birthday! Yippee! To start, they were so understanding when I had to move my booking and add an extra person on late notice. We let them know we have a sesame allergy in our party and they were so accommodating. They made us a special menu so we can see which dishes are suitable. I love the atmosphere at bonsai, a little hip, not pretentious, and great music. Perfect for a dinner before a night out. The food was the star, though. We tried A LOT of dishes, but my absolute favorites were the Hanoi “Pork” Spring Roll, Crispy Tofu Malaysian Satay, and Spicy Tempura Cauliflower. The Hanoi “Pork” Spring Roll was incredible - the flavors were rich, and it had this crispy texture on the outside with a perfect balance of spices inside. And it really did taste like pork. The Crispy Tofu Malaysian Satay was another winner. I loved the way the tofu was cooked; it was crunchy on the outside and tender inside, with a satay sauce that was so spicy and nutty. And then, the Spicy Tempura Cauliflower... it was addictive! Perfectly fried with a kick of heat, each bite was packed with flavor. Each dish was so texturally satisfying too. Oh my god and the cocktails? OUT OF THIS WORLD! They really went all out with creative, refreshing, cool flavours. My favorite was the Kaffir Lime Rum Punch - it was super refreshing with a nice, tangy flavor, balanced perfectly with a hint of sweetness. It’s the kind of drink you just keep wanting more of. The garnishes of each cocktail really stood out to me, the way they’re placed on top of the glasses so that with each sip the scent captivates you. Bonsai Plant Kitchen really made the night special, and we left feeling so happy (and full). Definitely going to be thinking about it for the foreseeable future.

This restaurant is in walking distance from home but it’s taken me ages to get round to going. OMG it’s amazing, wonderful tastes, all really fresh. Mainly small plates, ideal for sharing. We were advised 6-7 between 2 but ordered 8 as my OH was starving. We were both stuffed, no room for dessert. Highlights were oyster mushroom skewer, dirty rice, teriyaki tofu and tempura cauliflower. Great atmosphere too, really buzzy, and very professional staff who looked like they enjoyed their work. Pretty sure you could take non-vegans and they wouldn’t even think about it, just brilliantly cooked food.

I went to dinner at a much-talked about award-winning vegan restaurant in Brighton. I got it from homemade pickles. Crispy vegetables and a refreshing taste with a strong sourness. Edamame has a spicy and addictive taste. Fish tempura is just like real white fish! I was surprised at how delicious and the taste it was. Yakitori has a firm meat quality, but it is not meaty and is healthy. It's packed with flavor and has a chewy texture that makes you feel like you're eating yakitori. We also had homemade cocktails and beer, which were also very delicious. This time we ate inside, but we were also shown the lovely courtyard seating outside. The photo mural painted by a Japanese artist has so many details that you can't help but exclaim, "It's so cute!" It's sure to make you want to come with your friends! The staff were also very friendly and polite. I would recommend it to a friend and would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal⭐︎

Every dish was fantastic - incredible flavour and innovative approach. Honestly couldn't believe it was all vegan, and dishes lost nothing from their meat alternative. I'd happily come again and again for such taste. However, as others have said, the service went from good to poor by the end of the night. We'd booked a table for 8:15, so it was hardly late, but by the time it came to dessert an hour later, nobody was around to take our order or check on drinks. This was despite the restaurant being nearly empty. We had to find someone to take an order, then chase for drinks, and chase again for the bill - although the manager was very friendly then. It seemed the staff were all a bit too focused on closing and heading out for their Saturday nights rather than serving those that were spending theirs at Bonsai. At £100 a head, I'd expect consistent, quality service along with the food. Please fix this, we'd love to come back otherwise.

Initially the service was a bit slow - to take our order and then quite a wait before our drinks arrived. But one bite of the Napa Cabbage and any irritations were banished. The food is as fantastic as everyone says ...the wine too once it arrived! We were one vegan, one non-vegan. Both agreed it was some of the best food we’d ever had. The only negative was that smoking is allowed in the outside area - this isn’t mentioned on the website or on the phone when booking. The garden is very small so there’s no getting away from it if other groups are smoking. Fortunately the couple next to us only smoked at the end of their meal.

Food was absolutely incredible the flavours are mind blowing - the drinks go down so well too …I’ve been thinking of that cucumber martini since we left !! Service was good the staff were very friendly at the start but seemed to disappear at the end. We probably would have ordered several more cocktails and desserts at the end but no one came to us or even let us know that the kitchen or bar was shut and we had to ask 3 times for the bill. I also said it was my partners birthday but that wasn’t acknowledged at all . We sat in the booth next to the window which is a perfect table - isolated and very well decorated it’s simply perfect for date night. We will 100% be back- the food is absolutely mind blowing and the whole atmosphere is just very cozy we loved it!!!

I came here for lunch recently and it was absolutely delicious. Lots of small dishes (like Asian tapas), which is my favourite because I love trying a bit of everything! I was suggested to have 3-4 dishes for one person, I chose 3 and glad I did because it was plenty! I ended up taking half home for leftovers. I probably wouldn’t come here alone again, as I think the dishes are more designed to be shared and it was pretty fancy inside. But I’ll definitely be bringing friends here when they visit! Only downside is that it took a while for anyone to notice that I had finished my meal and was ready to go home. I had been reading for at least 10 minutes without touching my food before I had to catch someone’s eye to get a doggy bag and the bill. But overall it was a fantastic lunch (and dinner at home).

We went to celebrate a dear friend's birthday, she a vegan, me an omnivore who eats vegan several days each week. As such we've both eaten out countless times on an all-vegan basis and I'm going to make a strident comment - this is the best vegetarian / vegan food that I've ever had. I love food and I'll happily eat most things but it takes something special to delight me. As such I think my expectations were set somewhat moderately but from the first mouthful of the 'lamb' skewers it was clear that this was something special. The 'chicken' skewers only reinforced the point, along with the brioche buns / burgers (outrageously nice!), the two different types of rice and the corn on the cob. It was a riot of flavours, beautifully combined with amazing textures, the 'meat' items being based on pea protein which works superbly well. I hesitate to compare it to omnivorous fare because this really is its own thing and doesn't need to be aspirational in that regard but omnivores won't want for anything at Bonsai. The service was fantastic, the lady had an expert command of the menu, spoke authoritatively and was very friendly. The restaurant is a lovely place to be, open kitchen and all. I'm confident that my friend would endorse this review and we strongly recommend that you pay them a visit as soon as you can. Just ... wow! A++

As a vegan who used to quite like seafood I've come to accept that I'll never have a vegan dish that quite replicates that flavour and texture. That was until I had the 'sea bream' at bonsai plant kitchen. I've had really good tofish before but this is on another level entirely. Honestly everything we ate tonight was phenomenal ('pork' spring rolls were also divine), and whoever composed this menu is a genius wizard. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, and I look forward to trying the rest of the menu!

We've experienced the past incarnation so were a bit disappointed that there weren't any proper baos on the menu. But the tastes and dishes were fabulous so almost made up for that! The aubergine was beautiful, the 'chicken' skewers were lovely and perfectly bbq'd. We went for lunch here as a group of friends with our two dogs which were allowed in the garden. The garden wasn't the prettiest but is enclosed and we had it to ourselves which meant it felt very private. The food here was absolutely stunning, we ordered about 10 different dishes and shared them between us all, as recommended by our server who was lovely! The variety and quality of the menu was excellent and the food was so good we ordered more of some of the dishes when we'd finished them. The service was great, attentive but not fussy and we didn't feel ignored being outside at all, just left to enjoy our food. We can't wait to go back. Oh and you definitely don't need to be vegan to appreciate how good their food is!

We ate here last night for the first time. I'd heard nothing but good so had high expectations. We ordered 8 small plates (we're greedy) which were all amazing, some of the best vegan Asian food I've ever had! I went with my non vegan husband and he agreed. Stand out dishes were the pickles & kimchi (simple but so good), the Hanoi 'pork' spring rolls with pickled apple and the tempura 'sea bream' with mango and dill salad & togarashi mayo. We also had the special, which was salt n pepper Lions Mane mushrooms. Incredible flavours, every mouthful was a taste bomb, and scarily realistic vegan meat & fish. Also a good variety of veg based dishes if fake meat isn't your thing. The cocktails looked great too. Highly recommend.

PREPARE FOR PLEASURE!! From a confirmed meat eater of 66 years, this was a real treat. There’s some sort of good juju cooking going on on this kitchen!… small plates menu doesn’t cut it… they’re generous portions all! Where to start, the homemade Kimchi was a taste adventure on its own, delightful background chilli warmth not usually associated, for me anyway, lip smacking is the result! Then, Crispy Kale in a soy ginger dressing to accompany, so glad we chose this..excellent. Then, a first for me…Cauliflower delivered as a unique Tempura, no batter here, but a great crunchy texture… wow. I could go on, Aubergine ‘steak’ with a miso and maple syrup dressing, Dan Dan noodles with a protein mince, and finally, Teriyaki kebab, apparently a pea protein sourced locally, so delicious, wonderful meaty texture, remarkable. Loved this meal, lovely space, excellent staff, and great team in the kitchen, well done chef!

I've been a customer at Bonsai since before they were Bonsai. They were great then, and they're great now! They have an excellent host of staff and an outstanding menu that reveals the supposed challenge of making high-quality plant based food as the farce it is. Service was exceptional. Our server, Raju, made sure that my partner and I had excellent support in picking cocktails suited to our tastes. We were asked what spirits and flavours we preferred, and he came back with a pair of some of the best cocktails I've ever been treated to. My one minor critique is that while our lighting was sufficient at summer in our seats by the window, I can imagine that deeper in the restaurant, it may have been a bit dark. Bonsai has a great story behind it and a promising future ahead. Can't wait to see this place get more richly deserved awards.

I booked a reservation here after reading a review for Bonsai in the guardian. I wouldn’t say it quite lived up to the image in Grace Dent’s review but it was overall pretty good. The cuisine is a kind of Asian fusion but only really east and south east Asia. The dishes are a bit random and some aren’t as good as others but I really recommend the scorched rice and gome cabbage- these two were absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was good, relaxed but more fancy than your standard restaurant with the low lighting and dark walls. Although the experience was overall pretty nice I do have to say, it is expensive and the portions are small. I also found the price listings for the dishes with fractions instead of pennies a bit cringe!

It's so good that a place like this exists - great for the planet, for animals and health. Pretty tasty too - an imaginative variety of vegan substituted Asian foods. Quite nice inside decor on a grungy street. Service was patchy: great to start with and then required wild gesticulating to get anyone attention as it got busier with only 2 people serving. We did have a cocktail and a sake with the recommended 5 to 7 small dishes between the 2 of us, plus shared a dessert with coffee and tea and it came to over £90 which seems pretty steep. I'm happy to pay more for an ethically wise choice but this would be too much to make it any kind of regular trip. There did seem to be a cheaper, but less interesting set lunch menu that we didn't have.

The food is great, but they forgot part of our order, so we had to leave before it came because of the time slot and they put it in a bag to take home…..

Bonsai is very 'on trend'. Cool, funky and modern. The food was good, and the service attentive (in a style i find rather intense / think American). I was excited to go here, as a surprise for my husband for Valentines. He has been vegan for many years. But in honesty we were a bit disappointed 😞 I found the flavours of the food all pretty similar; sweet, spicy and very salty. Don't go here if you have high blood pressure, both for the salt content and the bill! Overall, good - but unlikely to be back all things considered.

BEST VEGAN FOOD IVE EVER HAD! Sadly, this place is not very wheelchair accessible- very narrow doorway and small inside. Be aware that if you are going to book here, I would advise that you ask if there would be another wheelchair user coming on the same evening in which case book on a different day. The tables are not wheelchair accessible either, but they are going to change this in the future 💓 There is no wheelchair accessible toilet here. However please be nice to the staff and the restaurant- They are very aware of how inaccessible they are, but most of the establishments on this road are not accessible due to the fact that it's a very old road. Apart from that very good service and extremely good food! We went here for our valentines dinner and we loved it. Big thank you to the staff for being accommodating.

Good and inventive small plates of vegetarian food, Japanese and Asian style. A range of different flavours and options. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. I also liked the toilets a lot, gender neutral, nice decoration and slimming mirror which is always good! 😄

Pretty much the best vegan food you can get anywhere, absolutely incredible flavours and textures, perfectly presented, very friendly, cheerful and polite staff. The space has great atmosphere, an excellent place for a special meal. Drinks are also superb. Would strongly recommend the aubergine which is possibly the best cooked aubergine I have ever eaten. Not the cheapest but definitely worth it.

For someone that isn't vegan. This is some of the best food I've ever had! Everything was full of flavour and the tapas style means you can try bits and it doesn't go to waste if it's not to your taste. Things coming when their ready can mean a wait between dishes.

Food was lovely - very highly flavoured but pricey for such small portions. We had the table booked to 7:30pm but felt repeatedly hassled and rushed by 6:50 by the waiter to finish which we were not best pleased with and felt this marred our enjoyment of the experience somewhat. Was really looking to trying this highly rated vegan experience, especially as so rarely eat out. I would come back when I'm feeling flush and I hope it will feel more relaxed.

Wow- first time at this restaurant and couldn’t recommend it more, atmosphere was lively and the service was delightful! The star dishes of the night were the napa cabbage, cauliflower, and to finish the chai crème caramel! Give it a try if you’re in town but definitely book in advance! Special mention to our lovely host Urte !

Attracted by a ***** review in The Guardian and just a five minute stroll from my front door, my partner and I booked early dinner to celebrate her birthday. Just… wow! Neither of us are vegans but the food sensationally lacked for nothing in flavour, inventiveness and presentation. Highlights included tempura “sea bass”, and skewered Mongolian “lamb” fully living up to the promise of its name check by The Beatles in What’s The New Mary Jane. And the cocktails! Conjured from the brain of our charming maitre d’, Raju, the gin basil smash is the most refreshing sharpener you’ll ever down, and the vegan butterscotch vodka shot is highly recommended by way of an alternative to a regular dessert. Absolutely brilliant in every respect — no wonder you have to book well ahead!

Couldn’t recommend more! Amazing food and such a lovely atmosphere. We particularly enjoyed the Mongolian lamb skewers, cucumber salad and tempura cauliflower. Big thanks to the manager Raju for his incredible service and great recommendations - the plum old fashioned was fab. Will be going again!

Outstanding! This place is truly amazing. As a recent convert to vegetarianism, I feel like I was completely spoilt by the truly amazing experience Bonsai Kitchen offered. From their signature sea-bream to the chai crème Brulé dessert – it was an incredible journey through taste sensations. The food quality of Bonsai reminded me of Issacs At and 64 Degrees but vegan. Incredible. The staff and service were absolutely brilliant the whole night and we loved the modern vibe with cool music. Highly recommend the gin and basil smash cocktail. It was delicious! We will definitely be coming back, and I will be recommending to all regardless of whether they are vegetarian or not. This place is one to watch. Definitely not to be missed.

The food is fantastic, but given the size of the portions - still pretty pricey. For what you’re paying, the service and atmosphere are a tad underwhelming. In a small room with very few tables, we were left waiting for about 10/15 minutes before anyone came to our table. I personally wasn’t too fond of the decor or the music, either. As for drinks, it’s inconvenient not to be able to buy wine by the bottle, the cocktail range is slim pickings and the bar could do with a makeover. Likewise, the bathroom may as well have been outside it was that cold/miserable, and the table we were sitting at was noticeably sticky. Again, when you’re charging 10 pounds a small plate, these are things to consider re dining experience. But the food, the food! The seabream, oyster mushrooms and vegan chicken bun were absolutely delicious - undoubtedly among the tastiest vegan dishes I’ve ever tried and well worth the price. Likewise, the little creamy dessert was a real treat. Would probably recommend it as an evening out just for those dishes alone, but with the above caveats in mind. Hope to go back at some point when money is less of an object.

Went through the majority of the menu with my vegetarian nephew and thoroughly enjoyed every single dish. Confession, I am not a vegetarian but found the sea Bream so convincing I would have argued it was fish. Perfect adaptation of flavours, I would come back once a week if I lived here. Hats off to the chef and the staff, make sure to reserve a table, they will be very popular!

Other than the odd burger bun dish, Bành Mì Slider, it's amazing food, the burger was nice but really didn't fit with the other dishes and, tbh, we were expecting something more like a steamed bun. All of the dishes are very strongly flavoured, which is great. Though, for my taste, I like something as a contrast like some salad or rice - the Dirty rice is lovely, but also strongly flavoured. This is all possibly our choice error in our overall pick, and I'll defo go again and get a salady dish to replace one of the others. Friendly, helpful staff.

Bonsai plant kitchen is innovative, stylish, delicious and relaxed. It’s style AND substance. The venue is tucked away just off of London Road and it stands out for its brilliance. The atmosphere in the restaurant is like entering a home, the waiting style friendly, approachable, smart and swarve. We were taken care of by Raj a lovely and friendly waiter who helped us order the perfect amount of food. The candles, decor and lighting all creating the perfect mood for a lovely meal out with friends, family or a date night! The food was delicious, so many flavours and I brought friends who eat meat and they were amazed with how much they enjoyed it! Truely one of the best spots in Brighton for good vibes, lovely atmosphere and damn tasty food! I’m also doing dry January and the mocktail was out of this world ✨😋🫶🏽 I will 100% be returning and so should you!
