Wow - seriously good food. Gotta be one of the best spots in Brighton. I’m not vegan and thought I was eating meat and fish. The Cachaca pineapple cocktail was probably the nicest I’ve had, could drink them all evening. Staff are super friendly - the dishes our lovely waitress Carmen recommended to us were crackers. Will be back soon

I left hungry because the food was too sweet to bear too much of. Other than one rogue amazing dish (the Mongolian lamb- credit where it’s due- this slaps), each of the six others we ordered were just about okay…an increase in price and a decrease in flavour and portion sizes since we last went a year ago. 6 tiny sticks of asparagus for £7 was a personal highlight. Overcooked rice and cauliflower. I wouldn’t go back.

We’ve been to Bonsai a couple of times and it’s always great, but this time we had the opportunity to experience their “Latitude” event where they take two seemingly disparate cuisines, and marry them, with the assumption that places along the same latitude are likely to pair well. It was delicious and inventive! The chefs and staff take care to ensure you know what you’re eating and will engage with any questions etc. Really good food all round but the prawn toast was a highlight.

This place is great! Really delicious and varied flavour in the food. My faves were the 'pork' spring rolls and the aubergine. Our waiter, Becca was lovely too and made the experience even better! Will be back next time I'm in town I'd probably avoid the ceaser salad though to be honest, (£7 for a a tiny bowl of leaves 💀)

Attracted by a ***** review in The Guardian and just a five minute stroll from my front door, my partner and I booked early dinner to celebrate her birthday. Just… wow! Neither of us are vegans but the food sensationally lacked for nothing in flavour, inventiveness and presentation. Highlights included tempura “sea bass”, and skewered Mongolian “lamb” fully living up to the promise of its name check by The Beatles in What’s The New Mary Jane. And the cocktails! Conjured from the brain of our charming maitre d’, Raju, the gin basil smash is the most refreshing sharpener you’ll ever down, and the vegan butterscotch vodka shot is highly recommended by way of an alternative to a regular dessert. Absolutely brilliant in every respect — no wonder you have to book well ahead! Update: my partner and I had heard there was a change of ownership and popped in for Saturday tasting menu set lunch in the hope it hadn’t let its standards slip. No worries! The three young guys in the kitchen worked miracles to create the most delicious food, the chargrilled chicken-alike skewers being particularly sensational. At the bar the legendary Raju wowed us both with his Oaxacan Blood cocktails, and Uite served us with charm and efficiency. Encore!

My husband and I both agreed that this was the best meal of our lives. We visited while on holiday in September last year and had such a hard time deciding what to order that we asked our server to decide for us. We are very glad we did because we could not have imagined a better meal. I still dream about the tempura sea bream. What a marvel! Our only complaint is that we did feel a little bit trapped in the corner and had to evacuate a large section of the restaurant when it came time to leave. But that's probably our fault for not thinking about wheelchair logistics before choosing our seat. Here was our order: Hanoi "pork" spring roll Bánh Mì Slider Tempura cauliflower Tempura sea bream (my favourite) Chicken yakitori skewers (my husband's favourite) BBQ sweetcorn Dirty rice We split this between the two of us. Maybe felt like we over-ate just a little bit but wouldn't have wanted to drop any of the things we ordered. Maybe we should have had a smaller lunch beforehand.

I ate here with a group of 5 for my birthday a couple days ago. I am a chef myself and have gone out of my way to give an honest review for folks looking at potentially visiting! Incredibly professional and attentive service, but equally friendly and laidback - perfect balance! The atmosphere and decor was exciting but cosy, perfect for the kind of food and drink this restaurant offers. The food was sensational, taking a very modern and fun approach to its tapas-style dishes. I found it to be the only restaurant I’ve eaten at to focus on Asian fusion cuisine perfectly tastefully. I have to say the same about its fully vegan approach. Not once did it feel like it was missing the point and just creating obvious “fake meat” proteins, nor did it entirely abandon the attempt and just focus on classically vegetarian dishes - this restaurant and its chefs have gone above and beyond at striking that tasteful and refined balance of producing delicious vegan food that doesn’t need to tell you it is, whilst emulating meat in a fun but not gimmicky way, and letting the unique techniques and beautiful flavours speak for themselves to make eloquent yet hearty dishes. This is a really great restaurant if you’d like to explore delicious, vibrant, and interesting flavours and textures, and at the same time expand your own horizons for what you can achieve as a cook To highlight some dishes, we really loved: - Tempura Cauliflower - Miso, maple, wasabi Aubergine - Tempura “Sea Bream” - Chai Crème Caramel (literally insane please order this!) Also for a drink recommendation, the Tepache in the soft drinks menu was stunning I recommend grabbing the tasting menu as it’s a super competitive price for what is available in Brighton, as well as a couple extra dishes you feel curious about. You probably won’t leave feeling completely full, but, you won’t leave feeling hungry — and you’ll absolutely leave feeling satisfied, intrigued, and inspired!

Have to go against the grain and say that while the food was great, the experience overall was very disappointing. Positives: - Beer and sparkling wine were delicious. - The chicken skewers were delicious and had a very nice charcoal, Smokey flavour. - Mushroom Karaage was very good with a great batter and seasoning. Negatives: The prices were outrageous - we were recommended ordering 3 dishes per person, which we did, and we left famished. 6 dishes (only one of which was marked as a “small plate”) and two drinks and our bill was over £80. The £7.50 bowl of “dirty rice” was barely bigger than an egg holder. £11.00 for a half an aubergine with miso and maple is a rip off. While the chicken skewers were delicious, two skewers was £9.50 - way too expensive. Similar for the mushroom karaage - really well prepared with a delicious batter and seasoning, but £9.50 for 6 pieces of fried mushrooms is crazy. On top of all the prices above, they’re subject to a 12.5% service charge. For the price they’re charging you’d expect it to be nicely done up inside but it just feels like a generic, slightly drab vegan cafe with an izakaya aesthetic. I should also mention our entire dining experience lasted 45 minutes. Honestly I feel like I got suckered in by Instagram marketing by influencers who get to go there and eat loads of food for free. £7.50 for a few spoonfuls of rice with teriyaki sauce, mayo and crispy onions - madness. Really sorry if this review is offensive to anyone there - I honestly think if portions were 50% larger, my opinion would be totally different. I.e 3 skewers per order instead of 2, 9 pieces of mushroom karaage instead of 6, an actual good size bowl of rice to fill you up.) Edit Responding to Owner's Comment: - I have no issue paying a 12.5% service charge, I know its industry standard, but what I'm saying is the food is too expensive, which isn't helped by this service charge. Obviously I'd never omit this as I don't think staff should pay for the portions they're serving being too small. - An "8 course" tasting menu is quite the stretch, its 8 "plates", 3 of which are small snack plates - I wouldn't consider being served 3 small plates of edamame, kimchi and pickles "3 courses"

My second visit, after a year or two, but I'm afraid this time was not so good. An assault of the senses! Just too too many flavours going on, with an overpowering saltiness. While an admirable effort is made to make "meaty" vegan food, the "chicken skewer" just felt like burnt salty soya protein. However the cauli tempura was great, as was the deep-fried tofu. All said, the staff were lovely. I just can't justify the not insignificant cost to go there again, what with all the choices Brighton has to offer.

The service on the other hand was seriously lacking. They failed to bring all our ordered food and drinks, and tried to clear the table even before our dinner was complete. In such a small space with an open kitchen the staff failed to communicate. To top it all off they put the bill on the table even before we had finished. Made the remainder of the evening awkward as we felt in the way. So in my opinion, with a little more effort and attention to customer service, this place would be exceptional.

Misleading for Coeliacs. We had a lovely experience with friends. Great ambience, nice staff - however, the food menu was misleading in the lead up to the visit. My partner is coeliac and we always pre-check the menus. The menu was littered with GF options - which is always a fabulous feeling! On arrival we re-informed the team of her status and they couldn’t guarantee the dishes were GF (due to using the same grill and fryer for preparing). This meant we only had the choice of 2 cold plates, as well as 1 rice and the starters. Guys - if your food isn’t truly GF - then don’t advertise as so! (OR, just have a coeliac friendly grill/fryer). We understand we often won’t be able to have the selection of a full menu - but cooked versions would be nice!! The place is great and the people are lovely but this was an issue on our evening. Highly recommend to others without same dietary requirements as food was yummy!

A vegan flavour explosion in a buzzing yet intimate atmosphere! The Korean dressed kale tastes so simple yet complex, the Miso glazed aubergine melts in your mouth, while the chef's selection of pickles adds a kick . The star of the show was the scorched rice — hard to explain, you just gotta try it. We opted for alcohol free drinks: the mocktail was just as complex in flavour as the food, but we'd return for the tepache alone. Daydreaming of our next meal there! Two acidental foodies

Bonsai Plant Kitchen is hands down the best vegan restaurant in Brighton! The food is top-tier, with creative dishes that make you forget you’re eating plant-based. But the real highlight? The piquante margaritas – absolutely delicious and pack the perfect kick. The atmosphere is chilled and welcoming, and the staff are friendly and attentive. Whether you’re a seasoned vegan or just looking to try something different, Bonsai Plant Kitchen is a must-visit. Trust me, once you try those margaritas and their amazing food, you’ll be planning your next visit before you even leave.

Excellent vegan Asian small plates. Crispy tofu especially good. Not the cheapest but 75 for two including service and alcohol not unreasonable either. Well worth a visit.

I’ve been here twice so far with my boyfriend and we’ve now made it a tradition of ours to go whenever we get our student loan. The workers are always helpful and kind. Service is quick. There is not one dish on the menu that has left me disappointed. Everything we’ve had there is so scrumptious. And for how good the food is, the prices aren’t bad at all. We usually end up paying £20-25 each but we leave with our bellies full and happy. I recommend this restaurant to everyone, especially if you’re not vegan. EDIT: After 2 years we finally returned to Bonsai for my birthday! Yippee! To start, they were so understanding when I had to move my booking and add an extra person on late notice. We let them know we have a sesame allergy in our party and they were so accommodating. They made us a special menu so we can see which dishes are suitable. I love the atmosphere at bonsai, a little hip, not pretentious, and great music. Perfect for a dinner before a night out. The food was the star, though. We tried A LOT of dishes, but my absolute favorites were the Hanoi “Pork” Spring Roll, Crispy Tofu Malaysian Satay, and Spicy Tempura Cauliflower. The Hanoi “Pork” Spring Roll was incredible - the flavors were rich, and it had this crispy texture on the outside with a perfect balance of spices inside. And it really did taste like pork. The Crispy Tofu Malaysian Satay was another winner. I loved the way the tofu was cooked; it was crunchy on the outside and tender inside, with a satay sauce that was so spicy and nutty. And then, the Spicy Tempura Cauliflower... it was addictive! Perfectly fried with a kick of heat, each bite was packed with flavor. Each dish was so texturally satisfying too. Oh my god and the cocktails? OUT OF THIS WORLD! They really went all out with creative, refreshing, cool flavours. My favorite was the Kaffir Lime Rum Punch - it was super refreshing with a nice, tangy flavor, balanced perfectly with a hint of sweetness. It’s the kind of drink you just keep wanting more of. The garnishes of each cocktail really stood out to me, the way they’re placed on top of the glasses so that with each sip the scent captivates you. Bonsai Plant Kitchen really made the night special, and we left feeling so happy (and full). Definitely going to be thinking about it for the foreseeable future.

Muy buen personal y comida muy, muy sabrosa. Lo único que diré es que mucho de él era muy rico y podríamos haber hecho con un poco de frescura para atravesarlo. En general, una experiencia encantadora.

I was in brighton for a day and spotted this cafe on the map, it was a great experience, I was warmly welcomed when I entered. The lady helped explain the menu to me. I ordered a Sancha Tea and a Katsu chicken baguette. Definitely the best katsu chicken I've had and the atmosphere was very peaceful. I recommend it 100%.

Immaculate food. The tuna crudo crunch taco is just sublime. If I ever get married I'm asking this place to cater.
