Boathouse Cafe in Plymouth

Such a great location shame lack of staff. The young ladies helping were great BUT we waited an hour for food … cold with my 92 year old father ! Spoilt the event for sure … no body came to check on us !

Just poor really. Poor food, poor value. Service was friendly and the actual place was nice, clean, good views. I am a local who used to visit this place regularly but I won't come back. We are just fed up with highly priced poor quality food around Plymouth. I don't mind paying a bit more if the food is good but not if it's inedible ..such a shame.

A super position by the harbour with great views. The service is unhurried and the food was good. I would recommend visitors coming here.

Pleasantly located on the Cattewater Harbour front. Looked inviting from the outside; inside a bit tired though. Signs of detritus from from previous diners on the floors. All a bit broken, cracked, chipped particularly in the loos; also a bit grubby. Service was less than enthusiastic, bordering on disengaged. Sadly the food was less than inspiring/palatable. Probably the worst seafood linguine I have had. Overpowered by a massive amount of, dare I say 'out of a container', not very appetizing, tomato sauce. No presentation to speak of, but did not really matter as I didn't eat much of it! 'Fish & chips' had the thickest batter I think I have seen on similar dishes that go by the same name. The saving grace was that it protected the actual fish from any serious harm!! A bit pricey for what it should have been, so not good value at all. I will not be going back and I would recommend giving this establishment a wide berth!

Brilliant location right on the harbour side lovely views. Lots of good seating inside and out for drinks and eating. Lovely friendy staff really helpful but not intrucive. Food was good we had grilled whole lemon sole and langustine scampi both really nice only suggestion the could remove the side fins to aid eating experience on the sole. Scallops were good with the blackpudding. Deserts we had sticky toffee pudding which was lovely. All in all a good place good food.

Busy busy busy... Staff were friendly enough although they were busy. This meant service little slow but wasn't horrendous Food ok, but compared to other places in Plymouth it was simply that. I would return but wouldn't rush to return

With a family of four, we decided to eat at The Boathouse after visiting the Mayflower Steps. We sat on the covered patio, which had a nice view and was quite comfortable. We split the Seafood Platter the ways and one teen had a burger and chips. The service was good and we were very relaxed the whole time. The calamari rings we had as an appetizer were very good but I was a little surprised at how small the order was: seven small rings. But we had plenty to eat with the Seafood Platter, which was amazing. This was one of the pricier meals e have had in the UK, but we have been eating cheap. It was definitely worth it though!

Sadly wanted this to be a better review than it is, went for lunch, and left wishing I had chosen simple fish and chips like my partner did, for his meal was stunning. I however chose the seafood linguine, a dish I love, which sounded lovely on the menu. Can I say the menu was not accurate? No, I can't. Can I say it over promised compared to what was delivered - definitely. Fresh muscles, clams, shell on prawns, and baby squid, in a rich tomato sauce. Fresh muscles- yes, probably. Fresh clams - no. Dried out, miniscule, flavourless. Shell on prawns - shell on, Head on, legs on, roe left in, grit and food box all still attached, and so overcooked that the shell was welded to the flesh, even when pulled apart by fingers. Baby squid. - Yep, present, whole, just sat at side of the linguine, kind of an afterthought or forgotten guest. Rich tomato sauce - think budget line tinned tomato left to reduce down with no seasoning - and then used to glue the pasta into a gelatinous blob, concealing sharp shells etc Staffing was hit and miss also. The guy who took out orders was lovely, the lady who delivered our food looked at me blankly when I requested a spoon - I eat spaghetti and linguine with fork and spoon to aid twirling... - and than brought me a dessert menu!! The lady who cleared out plates, and who we asked for the bill, disappeared not to be seen again. No-one came to ask about food, desserts, coffee... in the end I walked to the bar to pay, and as I left the bar, the lady I'd asked about the bill, reappeared and said she had "been distracted in the bar" Like I said, partners fish and chips was lovely, but fish and chips is available in numerous local eateries with far better service and at a better price

Beautiful position in the centre of all the attractions the Barbican has to offer. A lovely lunch of grilled sardines with glasses of ice cold San Miguel. Our waitress Angelica was attentive and very friendly. Service was prompt but not rushed. Glorious sunshine made the whole visit perfect.

Seafood Sharing Platter was to die for, and great value on Date night. The restaurant was clean and cozy with great views from the terrace. Would definitely recommend and Kevin was a great host.

We love the boathouse and came everyday of our holiday for fabulous breakfasts and occasional lunch. The quality of the food is excellent always freshly cooked. The staff are so lovely and always have time to look after you. Big thanks to Marina who always welcomed us with a smile and a friendly chat.

We dropped in for a coffee and a pint while visiting Plymouth the evening before the University Open Day. We were treated to fabulous live music (brilliant guy on guitar - I challenge anyone not to tap their feet and join in!). Even the waitresses were dancing! A welcome shelter from the rain and the other brash and aggressive Friday nightlife. Thank you!

Had a fantastic Fish & Chips when we visited The Boat House. Staff were lovely and welcoming in a relaxed way and made sure our Poochie had a bowl of water even before we asked. The service was very easy and efficient - ordering & paying did not require any effort at all. As the day was sunny, we sat out on the decking to appreciate the views. The chips were lovely and fresh. The locally sourced battered hake was lush - the batter was crisp, tasty and thick (the crunch!) and the hake was tender, soft and super fresh. We ensured we left a nice tip for the lovely staff. Will certainly visit again.

Came here for breakfast midweek, the food was absolutely amazing and such a lovely atmosphere! Kevin who served us was so welcoming and helped make our visit a real pleasure :) we will defo be back!

Mt wife wanted to treat me to brunch on Husband Appreciation Day so we went to Pier Masters. Unfortunately we waited 20+ plus to be served so we left and decided to try The Boat House. We had a lovely friendly welcome and advised it was table service and they would be right with us and they were!! Great service and drinks brought over quickly. Food arrived shortly after which was well presented, only slight issue was the poached eggs were slightly over done but still very tasty and we will definitely return again rathe than go up the road. Beautiful setting and lovely to be able to sit outside.

A fantastic lunch visit I had, the staff were super friendly and took the time to interact with my 2 children. I had the FLT and it was very tastily. I will definitely be back as my children love coming here aswell. Fantastic views and lots of things to do in the area too.

Had a fabulous evening for their monthly quiz, food was delicious, plenty of it , great flavours and good service, there was a great atmosphere, lots of fun and laughter. Brilliant way to spend an evening and help raise money for charity. Well done for being so thoughtful and helping local causes. You all deserve a pat on the back . Will definitely be back

We ordered a full English breakfast and pancakes. The pancakes, due to ingredient shortages, arrived as crepes, but Marina without prompting quickly offered to change our order. The customer service was great as was the food. On top of that there was no charge for our replacement dish. Great Service indeed.

Popped in for lunch. The restaurant was not busy, and there were a lot of empty tables. Was initially ignored at the door waiting to be given a table. Once seated, at a table with dirty coffee cups, we were then ignored again for nearly 30 minutes, despite trying to catch the attention of two waitresses and what looked like the manager. We eventually gave it up as a bad job and got up and left, to eat and drink elsewhere. Very poor service indeed. Difficult to review the food when you can't actually get served in the first place.

We ordered seafood linguine and mussels. Both meals said they were served in a white wine/cream sauce. The linguine was more like a cream soup and the mussels were in the same bland "sauce". I would normally mop up the juice and sauce with the bread and chips but the cream was so overpowering I just tried to shake off as much as possible. My friends ordered the monkfish curry and surf& turf. The curry was just a tomato sauce, nothing like curry and the steak was pretty poor too. Overall really disappointed and although the servers were nice we will not be returning as the food is overpriced and bland.

We returned from a fishing excursion out beyond the breakwater with four mackerel. Not wanting to drive home on a hot day with fish in the boot, we took our catch to the Boathouse in Plymouth and took advantage of their "Cook your catch" service. Head Chef Andy took them off our hands at the door and soon after returned with a sumptuous feast of mackerel cooked three ways. Very fresh fish, fantastically cooked and great service from all the other staff. Thoroughly recommend.

Good place to eat. I had the mussels. They were delicious and the portion was huge. Great staff and service too. They had run out of a few things we wished to try. Parking is also easy. Good view with radiators when the doors are open.

Absolutely amazing seafood, service and ambience. Delicious langoustine special and very reasonably priced. Also had the seafood platter which was festooned in a variety of fish cooked in different ways . Keep doing what you're doing, we will be back.

Impromptu lunch just before catching ferry. Well thought out menus and excellent service. Explained we had to catch a ferry and they were very accommodating including checking menu choices for allergies. Everything arrived in plenty of time to enjoy it and catch ferry. Nothing was too much trouble.

This was one of the most friendliest restaurants we visited repeated times during our stay in Plymouth. The food was excellent and so fresh and the staff were always welcoming, which was not the same for all restaurants we visited. Thank you to all at the boathouse, please continue your excellent service as it really was appreciated.

The boathouseWe pre booked our first visit to the Boathouse mostly based on the lovely location and great views from the restaurant, but also the menu looked tasty with lots of fresh fish options. It was a great choice! Despite the rain and wind it was really nice. A warm and relaxed atmosphere with lovely views over the water, the retractable roof is a brilliant idea and will be wonderful when sun decides to shine. There is a one way system around the restaurant, it was very clean and all Covid safety measures in place exactly as they should be. We were welcomed straight away by friendly, welcoming and smiley faces. We where shown to our seats immediately by the lovely staff. Drinks offered and an alternative recommended when a particular flavour of tonic wasn’t available. We shared the Chorizo and Honey Scallops to start - oh how we wished we hadn’t shared, they are delicious. Served with rocket, red onion salad and rustic bread to soak up the juice!Mains where equally as tasty, monk fish wrapped in pancetta and lobster Mac and cheese with delicious home made garlic bread. All the fish was lovely and fresh , locally caught and cooked perfectly. We where too full to try any of the deserts sadly. But we had such a lovely meal we returned on the last day of our trip to enjoy the scallop sharing platter. Five scallops of each flavour, five current flavours - chilli and lime, black pudding and apple, garlic and lemon, pea and mint and hands down our favourite, chorizo and honey. More than enough for two - a very filling lunch before our return home. What a lovely restaurant to enjoy a very relaxing lunch with great service. We recommend the Boathouse and where impressed with the teams passion for what they do. We will make a point of returning when we visit Plymouth in future.

an absolute pleasure , having coffee at the boathouse. staff are friendly and smart. nothing is too much trouble for them, if the weather is good its delightful sititng outside with the sun on your back looking over to Q.A.B and relaxing , everthing is top quality from the coffee to the brioche buns, everyone should at stop of at this place at least once whilst on a walk around the historic barbican, you wont be dissapointed, honestly.

Stopped in for breakfast after walking the dog on the Hoe.Food was delicious as always, but what stood out today was the service.Our lovely server Marina was so attentive, nothing was too much trouble for human or hound. Dave (the dog) was so grateful for the attention and treats (think she has made a friend for life!) and then when my husband had to suddenly leave Marina took his food back to keep warm then popped back to chat for a while to make sure I didn't feel strange eating on my own until hubby finally made it back.As I say food was great but awesome service will always bring me back.

Covid forced outdoor service in torrential showers, the lovely staff deserved medals! The food was brilliantly presented, delicious and generously apportioned. Spider crab was on as a special with a bowl of tasty, hot garlic butter and salad. That crab was absolutely excellent, full of flavour and very meaty. The water side setting next to the pontoons is delightful and the music makes the atmosphere even more pleasant.

Our first meal out after lockdown, so anticipation was high. We were greeted warmly, but the daily special described to us as “a large crab on a bed of salad with bread” was actually a spider crab with a token bit of rocket...really difficult to eat and rather too chilled. The minted peas with the fish and chips were luke warm and the chips were rather lacklustre, the fish was just okay. We ordered an extra portion of chips, which failed to materialise. The waitress asked us how the meal was, we told her we were disappointed, she apologised and we promptly paid the bill and left, never to return.

First vist and couldn't reccomend more, the staff are friendly and wait on your evey need! The food exceed expectations, great flavour combinations, beautifully presented and well priced. Would definitely recommend and look forward to visiting again.

I ordered the vegan breakfast after waiting quite a while to be seated even though they were not busy. Vegan sausage, mushrooms, beans, spinach, tomatoes and a slice of toast. The sausages were very overcooked and hard to cut and really not the best ones I've tasted. The rest of the breakfast was just okay, nothing special.

Only came in for a coffee with family but seeing all the food come out we changed our minds, decided to have a seafood platter. So glad we did, the freshest and most flavoursome seafood we ever had. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. We'll be back for sure for full dinner.

Booked for 12noon, arrived on time, welcomed and seated in just a few minutes. Three of us meet once a month for a meal just to keep in touch. The boathouse was pretty busy, our order was taken after five or so minutes and when the food arrived we knew we had picked a good place to eat. Sardines to start followed by seafood linguine. This is the sort of food you experience on the continent when on holiday, freshly cooked real seafood, not from a frozen packet. Thanks to the helpful pleasant staff I washed mine down with a glass of Sauvignon blanc while sitting in the sun, sheltered from the breeze. Will return in future.

Walked in without booking.We were seating in this lovely outdoor area with open skylights and seaside view.The service was superb, waiters were very knowledgable of their food menus and aware of food allergies which is always a peace of mind!I had the catch of the day (pic attached). Flavourful soils with delicate tones and extremely tender flesh. Loved the balance of herbs and chillies. Garlic potatoes as side definitely completed the dish. Nice presentation as well. My partner had an homemade burger as she couldn’t have fish and enjoyed as well as me with the fish. We paired lunch with a nice Chilean Sauvignon Blanche. We finished lunch with a Mango cheesecake, I assume this was homemade or locally sourced as it tasted as freshly out of the oven. Haven’t asked what coffee beans they used but I had a lovely golden brewed espresso.I’ve seen gorgeous mussels and fried fish served at a nearby table. Made me kinda of jealous for not having them! Also, the waiter was helping out a bunch of ladies getting to a nearby taxi service extremely politely, helpfully and professional even though they seemed a bit of a hard work! Repeat superb service.Overall I enjoyed the food and service, I would definitely pay them another visit and recommend to our friends.Thanks for having us as guests.

My husband and I popped in for a drink, the staff are so welcoming and professional, they work so well as a team and make you feel really welcome. The food looked amazing, we only shared a starter but will definitely be going back for a meal. Really impressed with our experience of The Boathouse and can’t wait to return.

We stumbled across The Boathouse as we hadn’t booked anywhere for lunch. Every single member of staff were so welcoming and couldn’t accommodate enough. We had a fab table which, with the conservatory style setting felt like we were able to be inside! We ordered the seafood platter which was divine and more than enough to feed the two of us. It was the most relaxing lunch and we were under no pressure to leave within a certain time. We will most definitely be visiting on a regular basis. Thanks again to Ryan and the team for a great afternoon !

Went to this Restaurant today with elderly mum, sister and brother-in-law. Nothing was too much trouble when we ordered food and drink, and the customer service was outstanding! To the young lady, and George who served us, thank you for making this such a pleasurable experience

We ordered a pot of English Breakfast Tea, it was weak and wishy washy. When I looked at the tea bag it was a cheap pyramid tea bag, not English Breakfast Tea. One of the waitresses had been walking around with her face mask only over her mouth the whole time we were there. As we left I said to her that her mask needed to be over her nose as well as her mouth, she just looked at me. I also mentioned it to the male member of staff who took our payment, Again no apology or mention that something would be done, shocking lack of COVID Safety. There was indoor seating which I didn’t think was allowed yet.

Really impressed with the friendly staff, quick service, and perfect venue for lockdowm drinks & food! - the heaters did the job 👌🏻and the food was fresh & tasty! Looking forward to visiting again 😊

Awful food. Ordered fish and chips my fish came out with hardly any fish in the batter it was all just greasy batter, spoke to the waiter and he offered 10% staff discount which is shocking so 13.50 for some chips !!! Then to find the table across from us had been served off muscles wont be returning ever

Delicious breakfasts this morning at the Boathouse! It felt like we were on holiday! Felt very safe with covid rules in place and hand sanitiser on entry. A lovely atmosphere with music on in the background and the sun shining through the open roof. We will be back!

Absolutely loved our food today, so pleased to be able to visit again! Everything is as good as it always was and we felt comfortable and safe knowing that everything is being done to keep customers safe. Delicious food, great service and well worth a visit. See you again soon!

Have always planned to do the fish and trips , boat trip to catch your own fish to have cooked that evening, unfortunately not managed as yet. Great setting with good views and embraced the semi outdoor eating post Covid. We stopped for breakfast/ brunch and were impressed by the quality as well as generous portion size. Friendly staff, would certainly recommend.

Excellent food and service. Our son said the fish and chips were the best he had had ever! I had the sea food platter and it was amazing! Definitely worth a visit!

Walked into a beautifully decorated and very festive restaurant, met by some very cheerful and lovely staff , sat with an amazing view of the Plymouth waters and the food was exceptional.

Had an absolutely lovely meal with the wife. The food was amazing and staff were very friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Although it is mainly a fish restaurant there was still plenty of choice those that don't eat a lot of fish like myself.Will definitely eat out here again.

Me and my friend went to go in for breakfast, we were greeted by a man, first thing he asked was wear is your mask my friend put his on, I on the other hand is exempt, he then said to me well you should be wearing your badge to show because how do we know. So I explained that it’s discrimination to ask and he laughed.Clearly don’t know the law. So we walked out he made me feel really bad. No wonder it was empty when we walked in

Fish and Chips were delicious....followed by scrummy pudding and lovely coffee...and a beautiful glass of wine 👍👍👍...and the staff are so friendly. 😁

Brilliant restaurant for some incredible fresh seafood, lovely staff, breathtaking views. Great spot in the heart of the Barbican. Went for a meal with my partner and we both had a great dishes. Staff were very friendly, will be going again to check out the lunch menu next time.

We really enjoyed our meal at The Boathouse. We had the Scallops, Mussels and Seafood Linguine. the food was delicious, service was great and we look forward to returning when we next visit Plymouth. We were a little bit apprehensive as it is technically a 'cafe' according to their website, we nearly cancelled as we were looking for more of a restaurant vibe for the evening. However glad that we didn't now as it was perfect for what we wanted - I wouldn't really call it a cafe, or at least it didn't feel like one for an evening meal.

We visited the Boathouse on the 27th October When we arrived we were greater by a man and two children ( both under 10) who had just walked out of the kitchen. He couldn’t seat us as he was waiting on someone else to do this. Finally we were seated. We noticed behind us a table of 4 adults, then some more arrived and proceeded to sit on the table next to them. Then a lady walking around the a clipboard appeared to know everyone. Between these two tables they were mingling going up to the bar getting drinks etc ... YET us the paying customers still haven’t been served. We flagged the waitress down after ten minutes and ordered the food and drink. This was nice so there was no fault there. Once finished we asked for the bill. The man who appeared to be a manager brought the bill along. He never came back and joined the lady with the clipboard at the table - ten minutes passed and we were looking around trying to get someone’s attention. Then one of the people off the table behind got up and asked if all was okay. We said we were waiting to pay. He then took the cash to the bar and got the manager to give us the change. In total there were 8 adults, 2 children and a dog who all new each other and likely knew the owners. I wouldn’t advise children following the staff around during a pandemic, but the staff didn’t seem to mind or care ....I think the staff forgot who the paying customers were. Very disappointing Experience

I called in to the Boat House for lunch en route from Falmouth to Bristol.I've been there before for brunch with a friend who lives in Plymouth.The welcome & great service: I was on my own on this occasion, which I'm very comfortable with, however I know that not everyone is, of course.I was made to feel welcome by the staff there. I was shown to my table & served by Fergus, who was so lovely, polite and made me feel very comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble.Steph sorted my bill and in the matter of minutes she was at my table, she also came across as genuinely warm and friendly. The food:I had scallops & chorizo in a honey sauce, with bean sprouts, mango & pepper & chunky bread etc. It was delicious & a really good price.I'd eaten at an award winning restaurant a few nights before & the scallops were twice the price for half the amount there & these were a pretty good match in terms of presentation & taste.When visiting Plymouth again, I shall be sure to go to the Boat House. I'd highly recommend it. Jo G :-)

Food wasn't great at all. We did kindly get a 20% discount as an apology for the overcooked food.The staff drinking from 9pm was an indication everything was rushed. Staff were still drinking and pouring drinks when we left at 10pm.Hopefully a one off considering most of the reviews are really good.

Four of us just went in for tea/coffee and we all thought the service was excellent. I think the coffee could have been hotter to be fair. The toilets were very clean and the whole area felt clean and very tidy and COVID safe.

We’ve been here twice. Firstly for traditional fish and chips which were really good, the waitress was lovely. Second time we came after fishing and chef cooked lunch from our fish. It was delicious as well and the chef was very kind and professional. We felt there very welcomed and looked after. We are looking forward to visit this place again.

We had a crab sandwich and mackerel. Food was delicious, good size portions too. Service was very friendly - Leigh and Fergus looked after us very well, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely go again.

We actually headed to Plymouth Boat Trips for the fishing trip on Tuesday morning. We had a good catch of some huge pout and mackerel and headed to the Boathouse after. Without a reservation they were able to find us a table (even when busy) and cook off our catch! We had an unbelievable seafood platter to enjoy, seasoned to perfection. Fried, grilled and battered the fish from our catch was an amazing selection with complementing condiments. Compliments to the chef - Andy, we can’t wait to come back. Similarly, the floor staff were friendly and attentive especially Leigh!

Excellent service, the staff were very welcoming and Steph was great at recommending dishes as we felt spoiled for choice. The food was absolutely beautiful. We will definitely return the next time we are in Plymouth.

Delicious crab sandwiches, fresh from the sea that morning! So delicious! Views over the bay. Just perfect!

I’ve been to the boathouse a few times in the last couple of months with my family and friends and have never had a bad meal or poor service. The sea food platter is my favourite dish and fish and chips is great also. Our waitress Steph was really friendly and helpful and remembered us from a previous visit. The boathouse has great views and the tables are spaced out making it feel like a safe place to eat out during these covid times.

Came down to Plymouth for the weekend and had dinner at the boathouse. Thanks to Steph, Alex and Fergus the staff for excellent service and great food.

Excellent service, lovely atmosphere. Fish of the day was monkfish - delicious. New manager from Wales very attentive and friendly. Stephanie our waitress was fab.

When they choose a vegan breakfast at the boathouse cafe! Ordered a vegan breakfast (I’m not a vegan, sometimes I do like to eat vegan dishes, I am however gluten free). Sitting on a table in full view of the kitchen, witnessed my Gluten free toast (for my vegan breakfast) being cooked on the hot plate where moments earlier, the rather stern faced chef had been cooking bacon... then he proceeded to use the same set of tongs he had used to handle meat to handle all of the items on my vegan breakfast. Also turns out that the vegan sausage I was served weren’t gluten free despite me telling the server I was gluten free (thanks for that!). If you are vegan, or have a dietary requirement, please go somewhere else!If they are cutting corners here where everyone can see them, what else are they doing wrong in the back?? Vial!

Very friendly service from Leigh & arranged for the scallops we wanted before the official lunchtime session

We visited for a meal on a quiet Wednesday night in September. There were only a few tables occupied but despite that we didn’t feel awkward as you sometimes can do in an almost empty restaurant. The view into the harbour was lovely, and the staff were polite and friendly. We had the fish & chips, and seafood platter (it says it can be shared but I found it a filling meal for 1) and were impressed with both- great fish/seafood and the chips was wonderfully golden and crispy! They also had a comprehensive gin menu with recommended tonics/mixers suggested for each, including locally made Plymouth gin. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others, and am sure it would be buzzing on a hot lunchtime or summer evening.

We were greeted by the dirtiest hand sanitizer bottle that we have seen in the whole of Plymouth!! Yuck! Not a very inviting start. Gave our contact details. Then shown to a seat. Ordered 2 cups of Coffee, not busy but waited ages! While we were waiting on 2 separate occasions 2 staff stopped to smooth dogs. Couldn't believe that neither one bothered to wash their hands! They just carried on serving. One person may even have been the manager/owner. The coffee was Ok, not the hottest. Wouldn't return here due to feeling hygiene was at the bottom of their list!!

Lovely cafe on the waterfront. Good coffee, friendly staff who made us feel very welcome in these strange times. The warm scones were delicious as well! Thanks Lillie & team :)

Went here for lunch, seated within a minute or so and the staff were young and professional and seemed happy in their work. The food was good, we had the seafood platter which was nice though you didn’t get a huge amount (though enough). The popcorn prawn was the best.
