Service was slow and disinterested. 15 minutes to get a cup of tea and a croissant. It wasn’t clear which till to go to… although there were signs no one seemed to be manning the eat in till… We stood there for sometime clearly in need of service, smiling and waiting patiently but we were resolutely ignored by all 4 members of staff behind the counter. All of whom refused to even acknowledge our existence, make eye contact or look up… in most cafes or shops a simple ‘hello’ or ‘be with you in a moment’ or even a smile or nod is usual and I think is isn’t too much to expect. Another really odd quirk of this place is that you can’t see what they sell. A lot of the food is hidden in the window. In fact the whole layout is strange and I would say it’s stress inducing for staff and customers. When we finally received our extremely simple order which required virtually no preparation but inexplicably took forever (and it wasn’t busy). The teas came in tiny cups with no additional hot water provided and the plates holding the croissants were not big enough - they were like saucers. Everytime I visit (which despite living very near by isn’t often because they will not allow dogs) you get the feeling that the staff believe they are doing you a massive favour, none of them are ever welcoming or helpful. The food is usually ok but not great and it isn’t a pleasant space to sit in. I think this place is massively overrated and it seems to have a culture of treating customers like an inconvenience.

The food is absolutely gorgeous. Bread is amazing. Toasties amazing. Soup is lovely and it’s a nice big bowl. All the cakes are lovely. The only thing that they fall down on is their coffee is so bad. No matter what type of coffee you ask for it just come like a frothy coffee in a different size cup 🙈

I visited at 13.00 on a Saturday. Peak service time you would have thought and, indeed, the place was quite full. Unfortunately there was neither sufficient food nor staff to cater for the customers. There was only one till in operation to serve the bakery take out sales and the cafe so a queue had formed. I had hoped to pick up a loaf and also stay for a sandwich and a coffee. What I had not realised is that this is a vegetarian cafe. There was only sandwich left (grated cheese on its own) and apparently no means of making more. I was directed to a pile of brioche buns filled with portobello mushrooms masquerading as burgers and a slice of what looked like processed cheese. I was hungry and it was raining so I ordered one of these aberrations which was duly heated up and served to me. At least MacDonalds put a bit of lettuce and tomato in their sandwiches -nothing so fresh here. On the plus side, the coffee was nice and the seeded sourdough loaf I took home was delicious.

Called in today Sunday 25 June @ 1400 hrs for coffee & cake .. it was lovely sunny day & it said on the door closing @ 1600. I ordered 2 lattes & said to the male serving I was disappointed there were no cakes left as the cake display was empty... he pointed to a tray at the back of the counter some distance away from the display cabinet and said there were some ..they were just cleaning the cabinet. so only seeing from a distance I asked what was left .. spying a pastry.. he described other items but not the pastry until I asked specifically about it .. it was a raspberry frangipani.. so I ordered 2 and said we were going to sit outside. When we got out side the young waitress was folding up all the tables & chairs to put inside.. we asked what time the premises closed.. she looked at the notice & said 4pm but probably 3pm today. We commandeered a table & chairs. Our coffee was duly served a few minutes later in paper cups instead of the normal coffee cups saucers & the 2 pastries were served to us wrapped up in a paper bag with no plate, fork or serviette !! it was pretty obvious the staff were desperate to get cleaned up & away .. we observed some people go inside & leave straight afterwards or have to sit inside as there were no tables left outside. The coffee & tarts were very nice but I’m appalled at the way the staff were indifferent to customers and being basically given a takeaway but charged for the cafe experience. I don’t know if the owners were present but if it were my business I wouldn’t be treating my customers like this. I really don’t understand why businesses like this operate on a weekend without employees who really want to give good customer service.. as this was not what I experienced today .if this was my first visit I wouldn’t be going back

We often come here to catch up with friends and our young children love the small book and play area. Recently my youngest child spilt an iced coffee all over me and the staff were understanding and brilliant. They replaced the coffee with no extra charge. Everything is freshly made in store, amazing range of bread, dips, drinks and sandwiches.

Lovely diverse cafe with a great foot flow. What a lovely feel it had and fabulous service. We just had coffees whilst going through a few figures, but could not complain at all. Whilst we didn’t eat, what they had looked fabulous.

This is a beautiful space in Acomb to have a coffee and sweet treats. We also love buying the bread from here. It’s good for kids as there is a specific play area and lots of space to have buggies inside.

Food was good. They got a couple items on our order mixed up, and the lad that served us seemed was awkward and made us uncomfortable. Probably better getting takeout.

Came here with a friend at lunchtime . All the toasties had sold . Decided on the only soup on the menu as the ready made sandwiches did not look appealing. Service was very quick and food was delivered to the table quickly too. Seating is on benches and shared between customers. Didn’t see anywhere to hang wet outdoor clothing . It was noisy and I was having difficulty holding a conversation with my friend. There were children running up and down. Not a very restful place. The toilets were very clean . I feel this place is maybe more suited to younger people with families. The window looks very appealing and I have not purchased any bread to take home but may do this in the future.

This is a bit of an odd review , I popped into the cafe to have some breakfast as I was in the vicinity .. but as I was queuing the tables were all occupied , a very stressed gent served us .. we were a little indecisive as we weren’t sure what stuff was .. he asked if we would like to eat in or take away I did a quick glance of the room and said take away as no seat were available .... as I was paying and he was handing me my bag of stuff .. he said the line for take out is on the other side .. just so you know for next time ! I’m sorry but I just paid 10 pound for 3 items ... as a customer I may have wanted to sit down but it was busy .. I’m sorry if I inconvenienced the man ! I thought it was rude ! Which is such a shame as it’s a lovely cafe ! I’m not quite sure why he even bothered as it was just not something you would say !

Nice to have decent bakery close to home. Good service and quality produce. Bread far better quality than a supermarket.

I have been shopping here ever since Bluebird bakery opened in Acomb and shopped before at their shop on the market. I buy fresh baked goods and love home baking. Their teacakes are the best in York. I used to queue at their market shop and the teacakes were always sold out. I wish your new shop and staff all the best. Keep baking those teacakes

Bluebird Bakery have a great reputation, making their new Acomb cafe an essential breakfast stop off on our visit to York. Coffee and toast with jam. Both were great, the toast had a wonderful nutty flavour. Large shop but popularity makes it difficult to get a table. Some outdoor seating, but not the weather for alfresco. Menu is on a blackboard. Not a vast selection it appears. Disturbed by banging sending tremors through the building. Didn't seem to bother anyone else there. As a bakery they have been delighting people for years. Now as a cafe in Acomb they are delighting people all over again. There is indoor and outdoor(with rugs) seating in a casual style. Benches and bar counter inside with tables and chairs outside - all carefully distanced. There is also a take-way counter for both coffees and the bakery goods. The menu to go with the coffee focuses on their baking - the superb filled savoury pastry offerings or soup and break and of course pizza. Everything is delicious. A good handy space just a little away form the main shopping area of Acomb. Definitely worth a visit for a drink and a snack and of course to take some of that lovely bread home.

Beautiful cafe with really helpful staff and a great selection of baked goods! We tried the Spinach and Chickpea Roll, the Bombay Spice roll and the Chocolate Espresso cake. All 3 were excellent, the cake was so moist and decadent and the pastry was incredibly buttery. Really impressed.

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.

Popped in for a bit to eat and last time we came here, we had our dog with us and sat outside. This time we were seated up stairs and it’s clean and staff very attentive and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The Yorkshire breakfast was lovely and a bit too much for me, but the poached eggs were the star, perfect and thank you.
