While my friends and I were purchasing coffee, the staff member exhibited impatience and rudeness. I had just placed my order and hadn't had a chance to pay before the staff member walked away to start the coffee machine. Upon her return, I attempted to hand her the money in notes, but she dismissively and rudely stated, "No, can't do it, ask your friend," accompanied by a disdainful look and forcefully pressing the buttons to stop the machine. Throughout the interaction, I felt uncomfortable and angered. I am unsure if this treatment is related to my Chinese ethnicity, as I've heard of other instances where Chinese individuals have experienced similar rudeness, as evident in Google Maps reviews. Such behavior is entirely contrary to the standards expected in the service industry. At the very least, the staff member should have maintained respect and explained the situation politely, given that it was my first visit. I did not intend to pay in cash, and the lack of clarification at the entrance regarding cash payments was not my fault. I am deeply disappointed and fail to comprehend why a cafe under the student union exhibits such a poor service attitude. Feeling disrespected has left me quite upset, to the point where I am contemplating seeking psychological counseling. My friends also share my dissatisfaction with the staff's behavior, and we have decided not to patronize the school's cafes in the future.

The managing staff are always rude and passive aggressive. The coffee is also really bad as they do not know how to use the machines properly for different types of coffee. The prices are fine.

I went in just after they had opened and was quiet, just grabbing a black coffee to go. The barista was friendly, took my order and made my coffee immediately. And it was a good coffee, and cheap which is great for London.

The coffee and food were fine, but the staff was very rude and I was not the only Chinese student to experience such treatment. When I was asked what kind of milk I wanted, I replied regular milk and she immediately sneered and said "we never say that", then she didn't say anything and didn't give any explanation, waiting at the counter with her arms crossed to see how I would react. I said "dairy milk" and she said "that's what I want to hear". Another Chinese student, who I read about on douyin, had an even worse situation. When she first came to the UK she didn't understand that there was a choice of milk and asked the staff if she could explain, and the staff suddenly got very angry and said to her, "How can you even not know about milk, don't waste my time!" But before she arrived, this staff had been chatting to a colleague and there weren't any customers in the queue behind her. The other Student Union cafe, which is equally good in price and quality, is just on the other side of the student centre, has nice staff. So I don't think I will be going back to this one.

They make the worst coffee in the world. It's like once you bought it you already want to dump it in the trash.

Stopped for hot chocolates and cakes with my 2 boys to get out of the January cold. We were all happy. Good prices for central London.

Buena calidad, buen valor.

Entrance thought Bloomsbury theater, this is a small university cafe by the UCL Union. It is good if you want to grab a quick bite, probably a cold sandwich, fruit or some pastry. The espresso coffee is good most of the time and inexpensive, better value for money that nearby alternatives. Very little table space which be crowded during university term. Closing time is regularly 6:30PM during term and 5:30PM off term.

We had a really bad experience at the Hansom restaurant today. We went to celebrate my mum's 70th birthday and had booked afternoon tea. We were 4 adults and 2 small children so made a reservation for 6. My husband is diabetic so can't have cakes. When we arrived we were told by the front of house lady that we HAD to order 4 afternoon teas because the reservation was made for 4 adults and the tea was preordered the day before. It felt very condesending and we felt talked down to. If that indeed is the policy, it was not made clear in the reservation and I was made to believe I was in the wrong and trying to weasel out of an agreement. Now we've been to afternoon tea at plenty of different hotels including the Ritz and Dorchester and have never been told that. It felt really embarrassing and not at all pleasant. This staff member handled this situation extremely poorly. I wanted to leave at that point and was thorougly embarrased for my mum who we wanted to have a good time for her birthday. The front of house person was rude and very aggressive when she told us that and stormed off to talk to her manager only to come back to tell us that they were OK to let us order 2 afternoon teas and 2 courses of their normal menu for the other party which we agreed to but it did really dampen the mood and from then on it was just a sh@tshow. It took them probably 45 minutes from arriving to take our order. We finally received 2 plates of sandwiches and food for the children. We had ordered chicken and ice cream. They brought the chicken and left the ice cream sitting out until the kids were finished with their main course so the ice cream was liquid. The main courses arrived, but no cakes. The steak was also over peppered unfortunately. We spilled water but no one cleaned it up or offered a new napkin. Plates weren't cleared, we had to call waiters over to ask for small plates to eat the sandwiches from. 2 hours in there still wasn't any sight of any scones or cakes. By that point my kids were super tired and fed up and frankly we just wanted to go home. I complained to the same lady (front of house) and got told it was standard practice to leave a decent amount of time between courses. I don't think 2 hours is reasonable to wait for scones and cakes! This certainly did not happen the last time I went here for afternoon tea. I told her that we actually just wanted to go home and nobody was in the mood for cakes anymore, that we really weren't happy and frankly super disappointed with the service. She was snide, unapologetic and just kept saying let me check. Finally her manager came over and offered us a reduction in the bill and packaged up the cakes to go. It was a thoroughly underwhelming experience where no proper afternoon tea was had. I had let them know in the reservation that it was for a big birthday, but nothing was done for my mum to make it special. It also didn't feel particularly child friendly and welcoming to a family with 2 young children. The only saving grace was that we were all together, but the day was throughly ruined by the experience. Very very shoddy! Cannot recommend. Overpriced and awful service!
