I love getting bread here from the always helpful and friendly staff, so thought I'd order the vegan ultimate chocolate cake for a friend's birthday. I'm so glad I did! Everyone was blown away by it and couldn't believe it was vegan. It was moist and delicious and I will definitely be treating the vegans in my life to more of your cakes.

Blackbird bakery has excellent pastries with a jolly atmosphere. The coffee is pretty good and always a lovely breakfast to look forward to on my commute. Blackbird bakery should come to se4!

-Terrible service. Rude, awful staff. -The coffee is poorly made and the pastries are chewy and poorly baked. -No layering in the croissants-they've clearly not folded the dough when the butter is cold. -The sourdough is vastly overpriced for a pasty and thick loaf. Avoid at all costs.

Located under the arches ok Peckham’s Queens Road is Blackbird Bakery. This quaint artisan bakery prides itself on traditional customer service, homebaked goods and delicious dine in/ take out menu. Whether you are a regular - they certainly know their local clients or passing through as we were you can be assured of a warm welcome and personal service as you choose one of the main delicious delights on offer. After an early start to visit family we opted for a brunch of sour dough toasties: cheese and ham, and tuna and cheese. Both were very generously prepared and seasoned beautifully, and served with excellent latte coffee and spiced chai latte. There are plenty of seats in the spacious interior and a nice outdoor area where you can sit with your dog - bonus for us and our pooch! Now I would an an extra tip here which the locals probably know but is absolutely essential for visitors: please buy a souvenir of your visit to Blackbird Bakery Peckham in the form of one of the many artisan breads that adorn the display as you decide which tempting creation to sample. We chose the wholemeal sourdough which was safely packed and stored in the car whilst we continued with our day out. We arrived home some 10 hours and 60 miles later at the end of our visit and the sourdough was as fresh and fragrant as the moment we purchased it. Plus it made the most excellent evening snack after a long day sightseeing and visiting. It will therefore come as no surprise that these beautiful breads sell out very quickly so if you see it buy it and take home this lovingly made loaf! Finally a word about the staff all of whom radiated warmth, friendliness and a desire to please everyone who walked through the door. We had had some recommendations of what to see, what was happening in the local area and highlights to add to our trip. Like I said good old fashioned values, products and service are the beating heart of this thriving bakery. Dirty, no wifi, no dogs. Bread, sandwiches, cakes, coffee okay. Let down by being so grubby and dirty - especially the outdoor seating. FYI no dogs allowed inside but you can purchase them a 75p treat. Unless the staff are your mates then you can take your shedding doodle in and let it jump up all over.

I came to this cafe for the first time the other day and I was overwhelmingly impressed! The staff are the nicest staff I have had the privilege of sharing an establishment with and the pastries are beyond incredible! I had a cinnamon bun and was blown away by the immense flavours! I normally reside in Mexico and we have nothing with this kind of quality there. When I return to Mexico I will be telling everyone I know about the wonderful BlackBird Cafe in Peck-Ham.

Food is pretty good but every time I come here the staff are so rude. Not a single smile or hello when you walk in and I always have to get someone's attention for them to actually serve me. Most of the staff seem like students who are too cool to be friendly. The cafe is always quite grubby too and they take forever to make your coffee.

For a coffee shop next to a station, serving coffee within a reasonable timeframe is essential. Be prepared to allow 10+ minutes before catching your train - on a quiet day - or you may have to leave without it. Nice place to pick up some bread (wouldn't want to eat in) on a lazy weekend but they are failing at the basics in the morning rush hour.

Well and Fed is 2 mins walk away and much nicer. The coffee is OK but not great. Often tastes burned. Cakes look good but are often dry, having been made days earlier and left out. Tables aren't cleaned and the place feels dirty. They get heavy footfall - well located near the station - but local people with time go to well and fed. Also, they were playing loud music at 7.45am... just a bit much.

It was my first time here in a while and the place has changed, not for the better. the staff seem more interested in chatting than serving. The music was loud and they were playing rap music with explicit, misogynistic lyrics, at 11am. I ordered a coffee and when I took a sip it scalded my mouth. The milk had been boiled, so they don’t know how to make coffee properly. I saw a female staff member wipe the glass cabinets with glass spray and a cloth but not wash her hands afterwards and then handle food. The tables and floor looked dirty. It has more the appearance of a student dive bar than a bakery. Avoid.

Good sandwiches, shambolic service

Had the best experience at Black Bird Queens road. Ordered a coffee and a piece of the chocolate fudge cake all ready quickly. The service was impeccable - good vibes smiling faces, very welcoming staff. Definitely coming back !

Great little people-watching spot, the coffee was excellent, staff were really friendly. The lime & pistachio was sooo good.

I’m so disappointed to say that the only thing good about my last experience here was the loaf of wholemeal sourdough I bought to eat at home! The tables were not clean and the floor was filthy. I only noticed after I’d ordered and paid for my food otherwise I would’ve been out of there. I had a nice black coffee I must say, and a very pricey warm sausage roll, after reading some reviews I hope I don’t have a bad stomach later ! Two members of staff were hanging out with their friends who were seated on one of the tables, and seemed irritated when they had to stop chatting with friends to serve waiting customers. Only one member of staff seemed to be doing all the work, and she was clearly irritated but her disinterested Colleagues An overhaul of staff and cleaning team is desperately needed.

Food is quite expensive for what it is — it used to be made in house and was well priced, but now nothing is seemingly made on site and the quality has nosedived while the price has shot up. Service is also quite poor; the staff, while nice, are barely able to provide a minimum level of service.

While strolling in the morning, we stumbled upon this spacious venue. The cashier provided helpful and friendly service. However, the establishment could benefit from some tidying up, as we noticed areas appeared dirty, a sentiment echoed by several reviews. Additionally, there seemed to be a need for improved food handling practices. We observed that the individual responsible for food preparation could benefit from proper training in utensil usage. for example, They were using the same tongs for various items, occasionally resulting in cross-contamination.

I usually visit this bakery/shop2/3 times a week getting tuna sannies…..there staff are part timers who know nothing about food hygiene….the One’s making the sannies are usually playing with their hair and ears and not using gloves whilst preparing your sandwich….I noticed thisa couple of times and informed them that they should be wearing gloves and playing with your hair is not on…..and they really get angry…. (Have a recording)please watch out….hygiene is not a priority in this bakery….never again

The staffs lack of basic knowledge about food hygiene and safety is very alarming. I went into the bakery this morning (16 January 2024), to get a Ham and Cheese sandwich and was horrified by what was happening. Initially, the two men by the till just completely ignored me whilst they were having a little chit chat. Then when I was actually asked what I wanted to order, one of the guys tried to use his bare hands to make the sandwich I requested (no gloves). The other guy that did have gloves on was no better, as he was fixing the till with the gloves on. The same gloves he uses to handle people's food. This is totally unacceptable and disgusting. I left the bakery without completing my order as I was just disgusted. I can only imagine what they get up to whilst people are not watching them. The lack of care and concern hygiene at the Blackbird Bakery is so evident and so I will never be going there again.

I love the food at this place but the coffee can be hit and miss and it's always pretty unclean under / around the kitchen areas!! Give it a deep clean more regularly!

What happened to this place ?.I visited here today ,and I was shocked how run down and dirty it was looking .The floor is a mess .The furniture is all chipped and none existent .A real shame as it used to be lovely .I am guessing they are winding it/running it down .Staff where lovely .No complaints about them .

Unfortunately for a coffee shop right next to a train station, the service here seems to be very slow. Today I arrived in what would normally be plenty of time before my train to get a coffee - there was no queue, just people waiting for orders who had already ordered sometime ago. After ordering and being about to pay, I realised there was just one barista on her own who did not appear very efficient, and this was probably going to take too long. Man that served me was understanding, but just sad that they don't seem to have enough staff or efficient enough service to serve people quickly when many are going to be buying coffees for their commutes. Left without getting my drink as I could tell I would have either been late to work, or had to leave without collecting my coffee.

Dead expensive. Better places around

This place has gone downhill SO much in the past 6- months. No menu or displays, oven has been broken for well over a week so no hot food, dirty cups sitting on tables for hours, pretty grim decor/ cleanliness, servers seem soo dis-interested. Such a shame because it’s decent coffee and has so much potential in terms of location/ concept etc :(((

Excellent cafe with relaxed atmosphere. Good for coffee's and sandwiches.

Completely baffled as to why this place is so busy. The fridge display units are filthy and murky. Clearly haven’t been cleaned in months. The preparation benches behind the tills are littered with stuff. It’s complete chaos! I know it’s an old building and everything is a little rickety, which is part of its charm but there is no excuse for laziness when it comes to cleanliness. Especially when they don’t actually have to make anything anymore, they just need to open a packet!

Large variety of cakes and sandwiches. Service was very good. Get the oven fixed.

Always a great place to meet up with friends

This place has the potential to be so good - it’s a cool and useful location in a great space. It also has some good produce you can buy (jams, bread etc). However, their coffee is burnt, the sandwiches lack filling and are just poor. Sweet treats are dry and overpriced. It just feels like it’s a money pit now and the overall care about service and good food & drink is gone. Should add the only reasonably priced thing in store is the coffee - and that’s awful!

Third day in a row the staff aren’t forthcoming inviting you to the till, someone wrote “staff are on mars” was a bit like that. Not sure if there’s an animosity but seems like staff are uncomfortable in their environment and after the way the manager spoke to me I think I see why Was asking about an “iced coffee”, if it was an americano? or an iced latte? or a long black or whatever… iced coffee was a bit vague but carried the same price with or without milk.. so I wanted to know. The guy on the till didn’t know bless him so he said do you want me to ask my manager I said yes please. Encountered quite a patronising and belittling man, who said “what is it you’re wanting”, I repeated what I asked the young guy and he said “it’s coffee, with ice. Or milk and coffee and ice”. Like I had the IQ of a palm tree? Wasn’t necessary, could have found common ground in seeing there are so many options these days, made it a bit of a shared joke or whatever but instead found the opportunity to make me feel stupid. I will say the chicken and pesto sandwich is delicious. And the staff are sweet but they need some customer service skills, increase their enthusiasm, it’s the third day in a row I’ve been In it’s quite easy to recognise faces there’s no “hey! How are you, you were here yesterday? What did you get? Oh the pesto chicken sandwich how was it? You should try XYZ” - boost your profit by boosting your relationships with customers. If I’m honest - not keen to go back neither.

Recently started work near here. Nice to find a place that opens Earl. Bread looked amazing and the cinnamon bun tastes amazing. Made even better when one of the staff offered to warm it this morning 😍

Don't like that the loaves of bread are left out right next to the tables for customers to breathe over and little kids to touch though

A missed opportunity to be an amazing coffee shop. It's always quite grubby inside and outside too. You have to pay more to dine in but the staff don't even deliver food and drink to your table, the table is dirty, and you only get wooden cutlery. Prices are on the high side and the experience inside just doesn't match up.

Okay coffee shop. They have nice coffee. Pastries are always sold out, cakes are okay but pricey. A few times they’ve forgotten my coffee and i’ve had to remind them. Not dog friendly which is strange when nearly all cafes in peckham are. You can sit outside with your dog but it’s dirty, and not their fault but there are skateboarders constantly slamming around outside. I can’t even say it’s a good place to get coffee before your commute because they take so long making it even if they don’t forget it. But on a good day it’s not so bad here.

This used to be such an amazing little place but things went downhill when they stopped allowing dogs. It attracts a different crowd now and they are doing it deliberately because I think they want a 'quick stop coffee shop' kind of atmosphere. They've even stopped serving hot food. Why? Why change something that was working so well. It used to be cosy and busy. I now go to Well and Fed (slightly further up when you walk towards Peckham high road) they are dog friendly and have a lovely atmosphere, mostly attracting families and people who want to work out of a coffee shop. Very friendly too. Also, just before you get to Well & Fed, there's a side road with a coffee shop hiding near the flats- they are also great, very cheap and they do community stuff like painting lessons etc. I would no longer recommend Blackbird. Allow dogs and change your menu. You are failing your community.

I come in here at least twice a week. This place used to be so, so good but it’s going down hill. Dirty, (some) unfriendly staff and empty fridges :(

This place no longer has a kitchen so no menu, nothing cooked just sandwiches and cakes. By 12.30 they had 2 sandwiches left, I resorted to a Moroccan lamb and lentil roll, they offered it warm, they were serious, it came luke warm with soggy pastry. Clearly microwaved when pastries should be ovened to warm up. No kids option at all so lucky I had brought snacks with me! I guess at least there was a highchair. I came here about 5 years ago, it was great, lovely cooked food. I won't be returning now.

Used to be really good, but in the past year it's gone a bit downhill. Always sells out of sandwiches really early and staff can't seem to make any more. The quality of sandwich has got a bit rubbish, opened up my cheese toast to find just half a slice of cherry tomatoes and only two tiny slices of onion, distinctly average for the price. Service has become worse as well, staff seem more social with each other than focused on serving.

The place is consistently dirty and the staff are on mars. One member of staff wears intentionally scruffy pigtails as part of her look but invariably her hair ends up going in the sandwiches. Seems like ownership/management don’t care about standards here - possibly because it monopolises the space right beside the train station so they’re guaranteed to get customers. Not good enough.

Average coffee, nice pastries. Slow service, staff often prioritise finishing their conversations before making orders. For a coffee shop at a train station the service is unbelievably slow. Unfortunately I've had to leave without my order AGAIN because it wasn't made in time to make a train.. and that's when there's no one else waiting for drinks.

Good quality coffee, sandwiches and bread

Over priced and all fresh baked bread was not covered up so anybody could of sneezed or manhandled them.

Bread, sandwiches, and cookies are all spectacular. Great place for a coffee.

Wonderful cake but always marred by the dirty and scruffy shop. All of the branches are like this. It’s really off putting.

I had a friend take me to have breakfast one morning, in this area there are no other places where you can have a decent breakfast, and I must say that this place was also a bit surprising, I discovered a nice place where they make different types of bread, all of them very interesting and beautiful to look at, the only thing I didn't like was having to go to the counter to get everything we ordered because they don't do table service, so why have all these tables available? However, the experience was not bad, even the cakes we ate were good and inviting, the environment is very nice, the only flaw was that of the slightly neglected service mi sono fatto portare una mattina da un’amica, a fare colazione, in questa zona non ci sono altri posti dove poter fare una colazione decente, e devo dire che questo posto è stato anche un po’ sorprendente, ho scoperto un bel posto dove fanno diversi tipi pane, tutti quanti Molto interessanti e belli da vedere, l’unica cosa che non mi è piaciuta è stata quella di dover andare al bancone a prendere tutto ciò che avevamo ordinato perché loro non fanno servizio al tavolo, allora perché avere tutti questi tavoli a disposizione? Però comunque sia esperienza non è stata male anche le tortine che abbiamo mangiato erano buone ed invitanti, l’ambiente è molto carino, l’unica pecca è stata quella del servizio un po’ trascurato

The place is filthy. The floors inside and outside the 2 entrances it's really dirty. I can only imagine how the kitchen area looks...inside you have really overpriced bread 🍞 loafs over £4.... the display looks empty nit much choice and pastries and cake is really expensive. Small coffees they don't fill the cups.Avoid.

Ordered a small white coffee today. Coffee was luke warm. took it back to the till after taking a couple of sips and explained that the coffee was too warm for me, maybe too much cold milk was added as its only a small cup. I was greated with attitude and resistance. The girl on till took my coffee in her hand and mubbled under her breath, "after he drinks half of it". There was no need for that. I'm not a trouble maker or free loader. It was a genuine request. I hope not all customer issues are dealt this way by the staff.

The latte here tastes like coffee flavoured milk. Patisseries are not great unlike the bread. The service is generally slow-ish with apathetic staff. Maybe because I come at the wrong time / on wrong day...

Staff were very pleasant. Bought coffees and pastries to take away and thoroughly enjoyed both. Seems to be high quality food and popular place. Will return to sit in next time and sample more of the delicious looking sandwiches

I read a lot of negative reviews, so I paid particular attention to how the staff treated me and to the quality of the cake I ordered. I’m happy to report that the staff were pleasant and efficient, and the cake superb, by full agreement of all who ate!

Ever time we come to Peckham Blackbird is a must go to place. Great coffee, sandwiches, cakes and bread.

Great bakery, absolutely delicious sandwiches and cakes. But for a bakery/coffee shop below a train station (where you expect quick service for commuters getting trains) they are UNBELIEVABLY SLOW. Like I can’t even describe how slow they are. I live nearby and go in almost daily and I would say 80% of the time I have to leave the queue to run and get my train. I’ve actually even had to be refunded TWICE whilst waiting for my coffee. I don’t my any means show up 2 minutes before expecting a coffee. I now leave my flat 10 minutes earlier to be able to get a coffee but probably only succeed once every 10 days. It’s totally ridiculous. I don’t think you even get service this slow from places that aren’t near a train station (it’s just common sense the majority of your customers are going to be getting the train). The same goes for my partner who experienced the same thing daily on his way to the office. I think you would probably get on average £50 between us a week extra if yours service wasn’t so slow. Which no, isn’t business changing. But a customer is a customer and especially a local one choosing to support a local business instead of PRET or Leon when they get into town (which I most often have to do anyway).

First coffee shop/café I saw coming out og the station, and it was great! Had a really tasty ham sandwich and an 8/10 coffee. Seating a bit restricted but I still managed to get sat down. Try if you're in the area.

I love this bakery. The coffee is good and so is the service. They have a grest selection of baked goods to choose from. I really like thier flap Jack's.

Experience was a little disappointing

Went in today. Table filthy. Covered in old coffee cups and discarded sandwich boxes. I cleared the table myself and took all the dirty cups to the counter. When I left the cups still left there. The two guys just chatting and a young woman busying herself not serving. What happened to this place.

Appalling service. After ordering I waited 10 minutes for them to tell me someone else had taken my order and that they had none left. No apology from staff. When offering a refund the member of staff even went so far as to ask me how much the order came to?

Lovely cafe set under the arches of the overground train line at Queens Road Peckham. Very nice flat white accompanied by a generous apple/pear tart. Outdoor and indoor seating.

Reasonably priced (for London) and the coffee, while not to my taste (too strong) is good quality. And excellent place to meet friends.

Went today and how disappointing it was! I am a Peckham neighbour and before covid it was a great place for breakfast, brunch, coffee afternoon coffee/snack with a cool atmosphere. Bread/Cakes/etc are still ok but with very limited options and no more proper cooking and hot food(parmesan egg, english breakfast, all gone!). Also, the place is dirty, table not cleaned and staff unfriendly, not smilingA and chatting between themselves instead of serving clients. it was 2pm and a lady vacuum randomly some shelves just next to us before leaving a mess of dirt all around next to a broken floor lamp that seems to have been abandoned there. Please management wake up! or sell the place to someone who can leverage his full potential! indoor and also outdoor with the great terrace, this space could do wonder for local breakfast, lunch and dinner options!

Went in for coffee this morning at 9.20 am the 5th of Aug, incredibly rude and obnoxious staff member serving me. The very last time i set foot in the place.....truly awful!

I love cakes in this place. I avoid to go pass as I can't possibly resist the temptation. I also like the Canadian pancake mix they sale as well as their bread. If your into your sandwiches they happy days.

This place used to be brilliant before COVID. Great atmosphere, breakfasts, pancakes. Now it feels like a ghost cafe - most of the menu has gone, big open space where the tables used to be, random broken chair in the corner. I'm writing out of affection for the old place. Maybe the management can find a time machine and take us back!

Useless staff, instead of helping the girl she was doing the coffee because people are waiting, 2 others just chit chat and they forgot even to get the right for the guy. I am not complaining because I paid for a coffee I didn't get, I am complaining because they waste my time

Very friendly staff, coffee & pastry delicious.

Before 2020 this place was the best. Now it’s unkept, dirty and not the most friendly environment. The floor looks like it hasn’t been mopped in the past two years. Boxes are left everywhere, tables are rarely wiped. Outside just looks abandoned. The only good thing about this is the skateboarders outside.
