Ordered the Brie & Bacon and cranberry Sandwich, it was missing the Cranberry so may have been the most tasteless thing I’ve ever ate. Ordered a pudding, the crumble, came with about a shot size of custard. This is the same for the Inn Collection Kings head, thinking it’s a recurring theme to avoid these pubs ! ☹️

The good news - the breakfast was good, the staff nice (especially Ian - who was fabulous & moved us from a cold room with a non-working radiator into a much nicer room which had clearly been refurbed) and some nice wallpaper. But: 1. Decor in common areas isn’t good, mismatching wallpaper & carpet, generally tired 2. No toiletries in the bathroom apart from the basics nailed onto the wall - a very travelodge vibe. 3. “Order at the bar” approach for dinner - it feels very Wetherspoons rather than somewhere to go as a treat. 4. Not enough staff on reception/bar area Overall, vibe is not special at all, feels very penny pinching and clearly the non-refurbed rooms are very tired, lots of clashing patterns. First bathroom we were in looked half refurbed - great white retro wall tiles but paired with cream, non-matching floor tiles & random brown blocks stuck on the side of the bath. I have seen alot of comments re staying true to the pub feel etc. Fine, if the pub feel you are aiming for is tired, outdated & unloved.

Very nice looking hotel in the heart of Helmsley. Family Sunday lunch, the roast dinners were fine however the service was non existent. Food is ordered at the bar, when we were ready to order dessert we had to hunt for staff. Desserts were average.

Just had lunch here. Worst pub meal we've ever had! Pie of the day, which incidentally was also yesterday's pie of the day! That should've been our first clue! Luke warm. Hard as nails, inside and out. Needed a saw to cut it open. Scampi equally inedible, cold, scrappy chips, cold mushy peas(one teaspoon of!) Wet slimy scampi. £19 for pie .£18 for scampi. Reported to waitress that it was awful! Nervous giggle and then nothing! I think a full refund should be offered! Over to you Black Swan, Helmsley.

Such a pretty setting and a rather nice atmosphere but that's the best they have to offer. The staff seem like under pressure and unhappy. There was one young lady who seemed to care as did the manager but all things considered it was a poor service establishment when you have to go hunting for a member of staff to address problems with your order. The restaurant was fairly busy but our food was dropped and the waitress couldn't move on fast enough. Fact your paying a upper price for a drop and run service. A chicken supreme priced at £18 with overcooked peas, dried mash, which was sprinkled with spring onions as opposed to it running through and flavouring the pash. The pancetta was nowhere to be seen but there was one pearl onion (I kid you not) but the added bonus of slivers of mushrooms (not listed in the menu, which for a Micophobic is quite unappreciated. The Linguine (with roasted tomato sauce was acidic and had no depth of flavour or sign of Parmesan. When we spoke with the waiting team they said thevparmesan was my mixed in and not actually with it as suggested. We cannot fault the portion size only the lack of flavour. My daughter never ever leaves her pasta but this was not to here taste. Overall the surroundings are lovely, they corrected the mishap through not charging, the staff are professional in the main with those that need assistance in understanding they need to know the dishes they are serving and how or what it shouldn't include and how to deal with it. We weren't checked upon and for that I cannot forget. Having worked in the industry for a larger part of my career it always saddens me that chefs feel they can sway and change what they serve over what the menu suggests is in the dish. I'm familiar with puffery of menus how easy it is too forget that you must honour what is in a dish and stand the details or keep front of house informed. To stress how important it is to detail what's in a menu, My daughter has a peanut allergy so if a dish doesn't state it includes peanuts (but could of been exposed to) I'd be outraged. I appreciate Micophobia might be an underestimated condition but it's something I live with. I llive my life hoping to not meet the same demise's as IKing Bar-bar! So come on up you game your claiming to be a Swan not an Ugly Duckling

The room was clean and nicely decorated, staff were friendly. Location great - and parking available. The food turned out to be very disappointing. Ordered a meat platter- several items missing, poor quality meat, soggy puff pastry! The chips were old and seemed to have been recycled. Crab and avacado salad was tasteless and clearly out of a pre made plastic package! Terrine was not great either- again- straight out of a packet. At breakfast time there were too many people for the number of staff. No tea pots, no glasses, ran out of pastries. Waited ages to order hot food- meat was poor quality- black pudding cold, beans overcooked, mushrooms cold. Eggs royale was ok- but nothing special. Would return to the hotel- but wouldn’t bother eating any thing there at all!

The Black Swan is a very old inn and the food reflected that. It was decent but not exciting. Service was good. Ambience is very traditional, not as luxury as the photos suggest. I had the rhubarb crumble for dessert and it was excellent, the traditional dish suited the restaurant.

Really disappointing. 'Home-made' soup and avocado on toast both really tasteless and the chips had obviously been hanging around for a while! Also, gluten free bread was very poor - like cardboard - which it really doesn't need to be as there are some delicious GF breads around now. Over-priced which I wouldn't mind if it was really delicious but difficult to justify when it was so awful.

Not that dog friendly despite upon entering seeing a ‘Dog Menu’. We found an empty table in the corner and our dog was tucked away. It’s one of those establishments where you find your own table and order at the bar. Placed our order. Was served our food. However it was when the waiter came back with some tomato sauce that we were told that dogs are not allowed in the carpeted area. We were told ‘to not sit in the area next time’ somewhat brusquely. I completely understand the need to zone off areas but to be more or less told just as we were served did take the shine off and made me feel uncomfortable. Upon leaving my other half asked where the sign was indicating no dogs allowed and was told there is no sign. The food itself was tasty and so a real shame we just wanted to leave as soon as possible.

My partner and I Stayed at the black swan last weekend. (26th September)Check in was fine, we had booked a large room (41) which was a long way from reception up and down stairs and two long corridors, or walk up the adjacent street and access via back door. Our first impression was not good, the door to the room was in need of a coat of paint, very shabby. The room was extremely cold, which we initially put down to the heating not coming on. After an attempt to relax and read, it became obvious that it really was too cold to tolerate. A long trip to reception (no phone in room) I was told that in fact the heating had broken down a couple of days ago!Credit where credit is due, within a very short space of time, a heater arrived, which sufficed. A walk around Helmsley and then a drink in the bar. What a shock, gin and tonic £12.50! And that was a basic gin. Single!Dinner was acceptable, although I struggled to find something on the menu that I was comfortable with (I am not a fussy eater.)Fine dining? Small portions and inaccurate explanation of menu, having been told my meal only had mashed potato with it, I ordered a portion of greens, to discover when meal arrived that it had a healthy portion of greens with it, hence two piety of greens!Comfortable night in room. Breakfast was a huge disappointment. Cornflakes or weetabix, no fruit, and a tiny full English, an apology of a breakfast. Unbelievably if you chose a bacon sandwich, an egg with it was extra charge! At well over £200 for b&b this was not a cheap option. Delusions of grandeur come to mind. Not the only hotel to suffer from this. Perhaps the shooting fraternity don’t bother about prices or value for money. I do, and this hotel does not provide it.

We were given a warm and friendly welcome when we visited the Black Swan this morning. We had hoped for breakfast in the lovely Tea Room but instead we were given the choice of eating in the garden room, the lounge or outside on the terrace. We chose the garden room but wished we hadn't as it felt rather dark and depressing. The hotel has recently been taken over by "the Inn Collection" and straight away we saw that the menu had changed since our last visit in March, just a day before Lockdown. The full breakfast was now a lot more expensive, was too large and didn't include tea or coffee. However, Sam, the lovely waitress said that I could choose a smaller option (not on the menu). Breakfast was served with a smile by a very pleasant young man and was very good. We could not fault the service. Every member of staff we encountered was cheerful, friendly and courteous. We have been regular visitors to the Black Swan Tea Room since 2008, when it was opened by Marco Pierre White. We love its quintessential English Arts and Crafts style, with its simple white bone china crockery and elegant silver coffee pots. It is so different from anywhere else in the area. Sadly, it seems that the new owners are not going to continue to use the Tea Room. Such a shame.

The afternoon tea was awful, sandwiches made with cheap supermarket bread, very little choice of sandwiches, if you don’t like one thing then you just get 2 of something else, rather than getting to choose off a menu. The cakes were all bought it super sweet tray bakes- horrible. The only decent things were the scones. The service was rubbish too- really not something you expect for the price. The cakes were so sweet and processed and unpleasant that we didn’t eat all the afternoon tea and left hungry and feeling sick. If you want a good quality afternoon tea go elsewhere.

My friend and I had a day out and decided to eat at the black swan oh dear I ordered a breakfast which consisted of five items so I had bacon tomato baked beans mushroom sausage what an utter let down for the money rock hard bacon in fact inedible half a mushroom half a tomato and I'm not actually sure what happened to the beans I had to leave the bacon my friend had the caesar salad which she enjoyed so there was a plus point to the day I did complain and the gentleman behind the bar was apologetic and gave me a discount so thank you for that sorry but won't rush back.

Visited for lunch with family, sat in the cafe area which was very pretty & traditional but we were plagued with flies & wasps!! I was a bit disappointed with vegetarian choices but chose an omelette which was very nice, unlike the thrice cooked chips which just tasted like warmed up chips to me! Food served in vintage crockery, Staff pleasant, service charge added to bill which is something I don’t agree with, despite it being optional I would rather decide if & what I want to give depending on service & not have it put on the bill before I have! I would visit again but would probably prefer the restaurant area which wasn’t open on a Monday.

Met up with friends for lunch, booked ahead. Disappointing menu. Heard someone complain. Prices bit steep for what we had.

This is situated in the same building as the The Black Swan Hotel , it is relatively small . The menu covers sandwiches , light snacks and tea / coffee and other beverages.

My daughter & I were staying in Beadlam Rigg & wanted a good place to have lunch. We chose The Black Swan & both of us had the fish pie, followed by treacle sponge for my daughter & I had the rhubarb crumble. The whole meal was delicious & we would definitely go again.

We popped in to the tearoom while visiting Helmsley, there are loads of places to eat here, but after looking about we settled on here. As you would expect they have an extensive range of tea's on offer, the Earl Grey and blue flower was a good choice. The food choice is also good, we settled on the sausage roll platter which was well presented and very tasty. The service was good and the staff are very pleasant.

Lovely and welcoming staff. This tearoom serves its very own special loose-leaf tea blends which are also available for sale. Worthy of the North Yorkshire tea room tradition.

After visiting the castle we decided to stop at the tea room for a cream tea. Very disappointing indeed. We asked for 3 cream teas which consisted of a pot of tea and a very small scone. 3 of us had a cream tea and 1 had a pint from the bar in the hotel. We sat outside and watched the world go by, which was very nice. We had to share 2 little pots of jam and 2 little pots of clotted cream between 3 of us. The cream teas cost £20.48 for 3 of us. We often have cream teas when we go to National Trust sites and similar which I have to say is far better value. You get a large pot of clotted cream and jam and the scones are much bigger. What a disappointment. I wish I had a pint instead.

Despite still holding its charm it has lost its luxury touch, however its prices have increased. This could be the best tearoom in Helmsley but needs a little bit of tlc from the management

I've been here a few times now, and the food is always good. Seen several people having the afternoon tea and it looks delicious, not tried one yet though. I've been with my 6 year old grandson, and they were really lovely with him. Highly recommend. It's quite expensive though.

The tearoom menu is made up primarily of traditional dishes, with a varied but not overwhelming choice.

Just had Sunday lunch in The Gallery Restaurant - I used to love this place - so special- just very average now. It’s a beautiful old building but the interior is looking tired, especially the Bar. A few windows need to be opened too as there was a fusty smell in public areas including the restaurant.

My wife and I called in for lunch on Friday 26th April. Chose the roast beef sandwiches for two, a portion of triple cooked chips and tea for two. Asked for rare beef if possible. It came grey, chewy and soaked in gravy making the bread soggy, yuk! The garnish was a few leaves and slithers of peppers, onion etc. The tea was leaf tea, but no strainer. The bill came to £29.56. Overall too expensive, chairs too close together and draughty when door kept opening. We won’t be going back, just looked on website menu, we should have got crisps with our sandwich and didn’t and the gravy should have been in a separate jug thus avoiding soggy (yuk) bread - not happy bunnies!

Been a few times now and always very good. Worth the extra bit of cash for great service and quality. Had the eggs Benedict which was incredible, kids all had cake which they seemed to wolf down. (Although that’s what they do with most things!) staff very accommodating of our garrulous autistic son and he often mentions how much fun was!

Basically do not go and spend your money elsewhere. It used to be excellent a few years ago but now is very poor, staff are indifferent to you, afternoon tea is mediocre and is extremely poor value for money. It was meant to be a treat for Mother's Day but was dreadful. I did not complain at the time as it would have upset my mum but have since emailed but have had no response. Used to be so good but it is relying on a past reputation. Real shame, would not recommend at all.

We had a late lunch here of a traditional cream tea. This comprised of 4 finger sandwiches each, a plain and fruit scone each, a selection of desserts and a pot of their own blended tea.

Visited with family. There’s a really nice feel to the place. We arrived early for dinner and spent some time in the bar (with wood burner) then ate went in the dining room which has a lovely view of the valley. We chose snacks and starters, as the menu looked so good. Snacks were gougeres (perfect), an aranicino with nduja mayo (freshly made) and Yorkshire Rarebit, this being enormous. We had two starters - monkfish “scampi” and a magnificent and imaginative venison faggot dish. Our mains were: chicken burger and fries for our daughter; Toulouse sausages with puy lentils and celeriac remoulade; and partridge with cabbage etc. The sausages were spiced with nutmeg etc and tasted light not heavy. For the first time in a very, very long time we were defeated by the portion sizes and couldn’t manage a pudding. I’ve seen a review suggesting the portions were on the small side - all I can say is that this absolutely definitely wasn’t the case with us. We loved the food; clearly a chef thinking seasonal and local. Excellent all round and I had to look twice when I got the bill - £113 for 3 or about £37 per head. Unbelievable value for money, particularly for food of this quality.

We were wandering around Malton looking for somewhere to enjoy a spot of lunch and stumbled across the Spotted Cow, which is right next to the old cattle market pens. We decided to give it a try and we’re so pleased we did. It’s an amazing 16th century building with oak beams and looks very original and unspoilt. We ordered the “Fish and Chips” which were excellent. Crispy batter on the fish and chips cooked thoroughly unlike some places who tend to under cook them, with a side of mushy peas. The prices are very reasonable and it’s good value for money. The owners are new and have only been at the helm for 3 weeks. If they regularly serve up lovely food like this, they’ll do well and we hope it works out for them. On our positive experience today, we’d highly recommended trying the Spotted Cow and don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Christ what a dump. Dingy. Nice if you’re into sky sports. Thought we would try an alternative to the George and dragon and tempted by the beer garden (very nice and with great potential in summer) so tried a pint of bitter. Now I see why everyone was drinking lager. In Yorkshire ffs! One swallow to see how nice it was. Another to see it was really as bad as the first. No 3rd swig. Vinegar. Clueless cellar management. Taste what you’re serving. Wouldn’t put it on chips. The rest went down a convenient geranium pot. Hope it survives. Vile. Not into confrontation so just left and went to the George and dragon for a delicious pint or 2 of theakston’s best. Avoiding the black swan where someone with TB was coughing his guts up in the smoking area. Avoid both would be my shout.

Just spent three nights at this beautiful Inn, staying in one of the garden rooms. The accommodation was spacious, comfortable and fully equipped. There was a good choice of breakfast options, with locally-sourced food being cooked to order. The atmosphere in the bar in the evening was lovely, with a log fire and fabulous food. Levisham is a quiet village (one road in) that is located in beautiful countryside - the perfect location to 'get away from it all'. We will certainly be re-booking at the Horseshoe Inn.
