The best homemade roast we've ever had! A lovely 700 year old pub with so much character. The land lady kept the kitchen open for us so we could have a Sunday roast and it did not disappoint. She even told us about the history of the pub which was fascinating!

Food was absolutely amazing! So tasty and great portion sizes for the price! Chicken Curry was delicious, comes with half and half, naan bread and poppadoms😁

We have eaten here a few times and always have a very warm welcome. They make a fuss of our girls and nothing is too much trouble. The food is home cooked and absolutely delicious (I particularly recommend their burger!!) Luckily for us they do a takeaway service aswell which we often take advantage of when we can't quite face bundling 2 toddlers in the car!!

Place smelt unclean. Chairs had stains all over them. Asked for sparkling water, they did not have any, asked for soda water and lemon, and they had no lemon. Asked for Coke. They gave me Pepsi. Was not told they had no coke. The place was empty. The entire place looked very tired. So left.

Lovely friendly local pub (i presume was landlady, she was lovely), food is delicious ate 2 nights on the trot there whilst visiting. Great selection of drinks to try. Food portions where big! Lots to choose from again, would love to come back and visit again.

Every time I come here I get a great meal. Its a lovely homely pub with great nar meals and carvery. I ride TET motorbike routes and whenever I'm passing this is the place to have a meal a d be on ur way

Quiet Wednesday afternoon able to just sit in and order lunch. All homemade, chips best i ever had, had chicken wrapped in bacon and cheese with salad and chips, great home cooked food in a real old authentic pub. Sunday lunch is said to be impressive will try another wk, well worth the visit. X

It's in a tiny remote village and we stumbled across it after a long, wet walk in Brechfa forest... But what a feast! We couldn't believe the amount of lovely home-cooked food for our Sunday lunch. The puddings - if you can find room - were also excellent. You won't be disappointed!

The Black Lion was recommended by the hosts where we were staying.....we were not disappointed. Food was simple but delicious, no fancy frills, if that's what you like, just a perfect home cooked menu. The staff were great too all round 👍

We booked a meal here at the last minute on Thursday. The hosts were very accommodating and the food was excellent. Cannot fault their service.

Arrived on time only to find they had lost our booking for 9 people, despite 2 calls and a Facebook message to confirm. However they seated us, but at 2 separate tables-not ideal as we were there for Father's Day and my husband hadn't seen his children and grandchildren for months-so we didn't sit/eat together despite having booked quite a while ago. We then waited over an hour for our food which was extremely disappointing after we'd heard some good things. Every ones' mashed potato was stone cold, the gravy was hot but bland and despite asking for lamb, I was served beef. I mentioned this to the waitress who apologised and took my plate back to the kitchen. I was then served a new plate of food-by which time the rest of the family had finished eating - but yet again, the 'meat' on my plate definitely wasn't lamb, more of an unidentified processed product which had neither the texture nor taste of roast lamb, which was what had been advertised. I didn't eat any of this dinner either, partly because it was unappetising but also because everyone else was waiting to order desserts. We alse weren't asked for a drinks order for the entirety of the time we were there-nearly 3 hours-other than when we arrived and were seated in the bar area while the table situation was being sorted. When I went to pay, I was disgusted to find that I was being charged for my main meal, bearing in mind that I hadn't eaten either of the dinners served to me. Its safe to say that due to the entire meal being such a disappointment for the various reasons stated above, not only will none of us be returning but I strongly recommend that you think twice about visiting this poorly-run establishment.

We'd drifted into the village via the mountain roads from Brechfa. Down from upon high where the spectacular views had been accompanied by warm sunshine streaming down from an ice-blue sky. And not a breath of wind. That ice-blue sky. If I could choose my eye colour, that would be it. It's a colour that looks into your soul, searches and finds all of those things you're trying to hide. The Black Lion flashed a "smile" as we passed, how could we resist? We didn't. Parking was easy and we were greated warmly as we entered. Welsh and English was flowing within, as was the "homely" atmosphere. As it was Sunday, it had to be a "Sunday Dinner". We both opted for beef and oh my we weren't to be left dissapointed. The food was first rate, tasty and beautifully cooked. Two courses for less than twelve pounds, of this quality, well, it can't be beaten. We were though, well beaten, full to the brim. We took the chocolate brownies home with us, and let me tell you, they were gorgeous too. We strolled around the village afterwards. The stillness took us, leading us from brook to church. Its easy to forget the beauty that lives so close. It's easy to overlook those with honest intent whilst being star-struck by the promises of those with darker intentions. So come to Llansawel. Visit the Black Lion. Enjoy the beautiful food and the company of those who will be genuinely pleased to see you. Thank you so much. We shall be back.

After lockdown it was great to go out to eat in a wonderful pub, with the best family atmosphere you could want. Food was sooo tasty. Hosts are the absolute best. And great value for money. So I highly recommend if your passing through, local, or want to be made part of the best Welsh welcome. Thank you to the team 🥰

We arrived at the Black Lion soaked to the skin, cold and dripping following 6 hours of cycling through the rain. The pub was an oasis of cheer and activity as takeaway Sunday lunches were dispatched to locals from around the district. We were made welcome and fed royally with the half and half Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. We were so full we had to put the pudding on our bikes. Lush!

Incredible food, huge selection on the menu, large portions, excellent value for money, very friendly and welcoming staff, very dog friendly, just loved everything about our experience here. We loved it so much, we came back again the following day and it was just as good!! Highly recommend this place, especially the home cooked chips... these were to die for!!!

Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough. Came for a few days away with 5 friends and were recommended this pub as the place to have some good food and a pint - we ended up spending our entire evening here chatting away with the owners and their family, learning Welsh, hearing stories about the town and laughing away all night! The food was unbelievably tasty, HUGE portions, and the food/drink is so reasonably priced we almost couldn’t believe the bill at the end. It will now be tradition for us to come back here every year and carry on the good times at the Black Lion. Thanks again Simon, Sue and Samantha!

Out for a drive to visit village my great great g/mother came from. Saw sign stating pub garden open for food. Licencee could not have been more helpful. Food was delicious, only problem was deciding what to have on the menu. We both chose garlic mushrooms to start and Black Lion Burger as a main course. Food and service was amazing and I'm sure we will return to try one of the other 10 /12 items that we liked the look of on the menu

we called to book on sunday 29th december..arrived for 1.30...everthing from the greeting to the food was superb...i ran a pub hotel for 10 years and would have been delighted if i could have served such great tasting home made sunday lunch....well done..5 stars

This place was recommended, so tried Sunday Lunch. Although unusually quiet the meal was excellent. Had beef and turkey. With veg and gravy. All homemade even the Yorkshire pudding. See my pictures. The sweet home made again excellent.I thought the meal so good I had one packed as a take away? Again very pleased. Pleasant owners and staff. Made to feel welcome. Highly Recommended.

We had a fantastic meal at the Black Lion. We had Lasagne and Lamb Shank and also a Chicken Kiev Pizza that was amazing! We took 2 pieces of Mint Chocolate Cheesecake away with us that was one of the best we've ever had. Would recommend.

When we first walked into the Black Lion, we were a little skeptical. It was open, but it didn't really seem open. There was some construction or ceiling repair or something going on in one of the rooms. Our first impulse was to find someplace else. But this place had been recommended by the folks who owned the cottage in Talley where we were staying. Plus there isn't exactly a plethora of restaurants in the area. The landlord welcomed us warmly, apologizing for the mess and inconvenience. We didn't want to put him out, but when he started a fire, we knew we would stay.Within minutes the fire was warm and we had a pint. The landlord was helping his daughter with math, which was a struggle, because modern math is a mess to understand (in Britain and US), and because she was learning in Welsh, which she obviously spoke better than her dad. It was curiously similar to a scene you might see in Texas.We were with out kids and everyone was having a fine conversation about math and homework and Welsh and what a curious little town we were in.The food arrived hot and quite delicious. My wife and daughters had their first taste of fish and chips. It was well made, with a crisp batter and scrumptious chips. I had the lamb shank. I had been reading and hearing about the lamb in Wales. The Black Lion's lamb shank lived up to the hype, falling off the bone. The experience was very pleasant, with good food brought to us by kind and interesting folks.

Llansawel is well off the main road network but well worth a visit for the views and friendly staff and customers at the Black Lion. I was there today with a group of 12 for a club Sunday lunch. Friendly staff and customers and great food. It's a village pub and not a 5 star hotel, but that doesn't matter when the food is good. All club members were pleased.We will return.

We have been staying near by and have visited this pub for dinner. The food was delicious and the pudding was to die for! Definitely recommended. Family run pub great with children very friendly! Even has bred milk etc for people to buy!

Felt like a real hub for the community. Great chat, good food, and you could buy a loaf of bread. Very genuine and homely.

Lovely down to earth pub, with attentive fun staff, very friendly with lovely food, fabulous tasty stuffing, plentiful veg (cauliflower cheese, Cabbage, Carrots, Swede, peas, Roasties [and an enormous Yorkshire Pudding!]) The fun atmosphere was what made the meal though! Gorgeous Puddings too.

Just a perfect Sunday lunch after a damp walk through the forest - warm fire, great choices, local farms used, cauliflower cheese with the Sunday roast (always a great sign in my book!) and our dog welcomed.

Called in after an MTB ride at Brechfa/Abergorlech for a spot of lunch. New owners were very welcoming, lunchtime menu was a bit limited - soup or sandwiches, but in fairness, they were having the kitchen refurbished, so expect that to improve. Will definitely call in, again...

We visited here for a quick lunch. Reasonable pub fare, much as you would find anywhere. Nothing special for the vegetarians. Reasonably priced with a friendly landlady

Food here is brilliant! Portion sizes fit for a king at a extremely reasonable price! And the Sunday dinner well what can I say I haven't been anywhere that's topped it yet! Staff are very helpful and really go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and honestly can't do enough for you. Their great with Young families, patient, professional, friendly. We'll Definitely be coming back. ********** 10 stars from me! ☺️

Lovely pub, food was great true definition of a classic country pub. Prices where very reasonable and portion sizes where great my partner was extremely happy as he eats a lot! . Definitely coming back for another visit.

Good beer good food good company just like pubs should be. Situated in the middle of a nice friendly welcome. Near a lovely park which is perfect to let the kids have a run around in.

Great little pub, good atmosphere, good food. They also have a little shop in the pub that sells all the basics you need. Highly recommended.
