Black Horse Pub in Liverpool

Last Sunday was my second Greene King experience, the first being The Jolly Fenman near my daughter's SE London University. I was walking around Goodison Park when a young man I'd just met,Josh, suggested we head there to watch the Carabao Cup final. We sat with a couple, Steven and Carrie. All of us fast friends. At halftime I ran to my Airbnb to pick up my son. We enjoyed a delicious beef Sunday Roast. Liverpool may be the friendliest city I've been in and the staff and visitors at The Black Horse exemplified that spirit.

I was in yesterday as an out of town guest and Michael was very charismatic and the other staff were very friendly. I enjoyed watching the game at the pub.

Me and my Partner came here for a Sunday Roast whilst on our trip away to Liverpool. As the pub was only down the road; we decided to give it a go, especially as Greene King down the South is very popular in terms of eating choice. When arriving at the facility, we greeted and stated we had booked for a table of 2, we were around 10 minutes early. The manager then told us to sit wherever we wanted, and around there was multiple tables untidied, unclean and disorganised with chairs around. Whilst staff weren’t doing much. We finally found a clean table in the corner, sat down and ordered off the Greene King App. No service to help us get seated, just sort of ‘do it yourself’ attitude. After then placing an order, where there was limited option (can’t lie, to be only told beef was available we were was disappointed, especially with it only being 2pm on a Sunday), adding extra pigs in blankets and ordering for drink a pint of cider and a large orange juice. After 5 minutes into being seated, one of the staff members came over to say not to use the app within branch. He then stated they had no pigs in blankets, and the cider my partner had selected was unavailable. Overall, the menu hadn’t been updated. They then told us we would get a refund for the pigs, we went up to the bar to receive said refund and we overheard a young lad asking for a straw for his drink just to get told that they didn’t have any, which for anywhere in any decent hospitality venue, it’s unheard of. You can run 5 minutes down the road to get some at Home Bargains, it’s not that difficult to be prepared. Eventually at the end of our course, however the cider they gave my partner was out of date. How did I know this? The cider smelt of vinegar, was super sour and you could smell it a mile away, plus was darker than usual. My partner had to leave mid-way through the meal to throw up in the toilets, after being away for a good 10+ minutes plus. And then, whilst eating our roast dinner: veg was cold, beef was chewy and thin as a sheet of paper, the gravy was like water and to top it all off, wasn’t offered any condiments (e.g horse-radish) to go alongside. For £9, it was a good portion size, but you could tell they didn’t have a Proper chef as the microwave was used a lot. No check back was done at all as well. And when ordering a ‘Large’ size, you wouldn’t think a half-pint would be a large? After finishing our meals, I tried to ask when the barrel was last done, as being someone whose worked in hospitality for 4+ years, I wouldn’t want someone to end up like my partner, however they were too busy to even for me to ask the question to. They just thought we were wanting a refund we already got. We left as soon as possible; as we didn’t want to stay much longer. I’m really sorry to leave this review; but as someone who’s been working in hospitality for a few years, this is not something I would want someone else to experience.

¿Desde cuándo es aceptable llamar a sus clientes Lad? Me lo dieron dos miembros del personal esta noche. Aprecio que todos seamos Scousers pero es totalmente inaceptable en un entorno de servicio. Las hamburguesas son como comida para perros también. Aprecio que sea una decisión para la cadena de suministro de GK, pero eso no cambia el hecho de que es un producto horrible. Este solía ser un gran pub y se ha ido colina abajo masivamente. Qué pena.

Great pub this one, fabulous food and great atmosphere, children's menu and great deals everyday of week also senior deals. Brilliant staff and large enclosed beer garden at the rear of pub. Quiz nights Wednesday and disco fri/sat nights, loads of TV.s showing all types of sport.

Excellent choice of meals. My friend and I meet up to enjoy 2 meals for £10.99. Hunters chicken is brilliant, my favourite . Friendly staff , and nice surroundings

Tuvimos una Navidad increíble en el caballo negro. La noche de Navidad y la noche de boxeo fueron increíbles y no puedo esperar a celebrar de nuevo el próximo año en mi encantador local.

The staff are always super chill and friendly, the food they have is honestly the best pub chain food you can get, the price is reasonable especially on the wed/thur when it's burger day or chicken mix day. 2 people with drinks never goes over £20.

Absolutely loved it went on my birthday 27th December 2024 first time I went there staff friendly great asthomophere made to feel welcomed friendly. Went again this Saturday will definitely be going back recommend 👌

Quisiera darle las gracias a Tyler por ir más allá por haberme metido un extra de peroni cero mientras trato de reducir la cerveza. Sinceramente no puedo culpar a este pub la comida es genial, las bebidas son justo como deberían ser y tengo una muy buena relación con el personal. Nada es demasiado problema para ellos y puedo reírme con ellos.

Hi sorry a.bout my first post my phone wasnt wlorking properly . Thhe black horse is lovely and the toilets are spotless .

Popular, spacious, local boozer, with a choice of Guinness, Smiths bitter, two IPAs, and a handful of lagers. No pretention to being a gastropub, it offers a good range of classic dishes, and all but the sirloin steak are under a tenner, between noon and 9pm, with dietary and age based specials offered. I chose the lasagne with dressed salad and garlic bread and found it had a rich, beefy flavour that I'd be happy to order again.

Was worried because it was so busy but staff were lovely and food was piping hot and delicious! Well done!

Been great watching the euros in the black horse. The staff in here are amazing. Massive thanks goes out to June though for everything she has done for me personally in regards with my family. Cannot thank you all enough. And I am proud to call this my favourite local. Boss little team, boss manager, boss boozer.

I went to this pub with a few friends for some drinks and to catch up, the bar staff were all friendly and lovely but the manageress has a terrible attitude and gave us dirty looks when we walked in, she felt extremely unwelcoming even though it was a quiet day and we seemed to be some of the only people there. Wont be returning again as she has left a sour taste in our mouths with her terrible customer service and vibe, I feel bad for all the staff who have to work under her.

Went in the blackhorse for a Sunday roast we went about 6.25 ordered some drinks. We ordered a roast dinner. Poss the worst roast dinner we've had. To start with the plate wasn't hot. The potatoes were lukewarm at best and as far the gravy it had no taste and was just like water. Such a shame as the atmosphere in there was great and the barstaff were lovely

This pub is just down our road, and Will (the chef) has always been amazing, such a lovely guy and great with customer service

They weren't interested so it seemed. We couldn't order food, lousy service, we're not going back there again.

Brilliant pub. Nikki and bayley are the best staff in here. Can have a good natter with them and always nice and polite. This has become my favourite local.

Been going here for a few years now. Food is wonderful. Staff are very helpful. June is lovely. This IS the place to eat on county road.

Staying near by for 2 nights so had a few beers ,nice to see a busy pub,keith and Caz

No service, no staff, had to walk out to the Glebe and was served immediately by efficient polite staff.

I came in today with my partner for good Friday and the food was lovely. We both had fish and chips and couldn't fault anything at all. The staff were lovely and friendly, food was lovely and we had a really pleasant afternoon.

I haven't been in for a while so it was nice to come back in today to be greeted like I haven't been away. Staff are always lovely and I can have a laugh with them. Drinks always nice and cold and I honestly cannot fault this pub. It's my favourite pub on county road.

The food is generally good in here, however we came for our tea last Tuesday and waited 45 mins for 2 meals. We came again tonight and were told it was an hours wait for food. It weren’t particularly busy on either of these evenings. Thought it was a really long time to wait for pie and chips at 6.30pm.

Nearly two hours wait for food is absolutely shocking when it was empty We ordered our drinks first had to re ask for the hot drinks because he just did not do them After 45 minutes wait like we were originally told we waited another 15 then asked how long we had to wait to be told another 25 minutes and got told in future how about booking before hand because there is other people here as well All food came out The pies were microwaved pies not freshly made Gravy was freezing cold Peas were also stone cold And on all the meals we had chips and YES we did count them all they were between 6-8 chips on each plate In the mean time we had joys of hearing and listening to smashing coming from bar/kitchen area Not one member of staffed smiled while serving it looked like it was a effort to serve anybody who attended the bar Not a warm welcome to number of people who want food and drinks in the pub

Had a little bit of a wait, and it's a fairly nondescript standard pub, but the drink was pretty damn cheap for what I had.....a big double gin and tonic.

I visited with four friends looking for a bite to eat after checking out of our Airbnb. We arrived at about 11.50am and were told by a staff member that we'd have to wait outside until the pub opened at midday. On one hand, fair enough, but given the weather I fail to see what harm it would have done to let us in to sit at a table until they were ready to serve. When we were let in, we spent a good ten minutes looking at the food menus. Only at that point did a staff member ask us if we were looking to order food, and then she told us that they weren't serving food to the public until 2pm because they had a Christmas booking in for lunch. The staff clearly would have known they weren't going to be serving food when they opened, and given they knew we were waiting outside, simply asking us if we were looking to eat at the very start would have saved us both standing outside in the cold and let us find somewhere else. Would not recommend, which is a shame because it looks like a nice pub from the outside.

Went in here whilst staying nearby and was not disappointed. Greene king pubs are often hit and Miss but this was ok with good food. It is a local’s pub and Everton supporters pub and that made it a good atmosphere. The food is cheap and cheerful but quite decent tbh.

Still the best pub on the road coming to this pub long time good staff great food on Saturday Sunday night Disco night.

Love the black horse. It's literally like my second home. I come in for a nice quiet pint and something to eat and its lovely. The staff are all really friendly and I've made some brilliant friendships with the afternoon staff. Thank you for always being so welcome and putting up with me haha.

We had a lovely time at the Black Horse. Food was great, came out quite quickly and all meals were really tasty. we had a build your own burger and children meals, really great for value. Staff were great. they were friendly and helpful and accommodating to the kids. we regularly go for food and a couple of cocktails when out on a night out and we will defienlty be back for dinner.

Good prices on food and drinks. The place is a little rough. Not ideal for families but, great place for friends to enjoy a pint and watch the match

Easily best pub for EFC matchday

We visited the Black Horse while staying in Liverpool visiting family. Loved it! Staff helpful and friendly. Locals very warm and welcoming. Great food and beer. Can't wait to visit again.

I went in with my family which we where told the kitchen was closed so I asked the girl why it was close she said the kitchen member was on his break 😳 they only have 1 kitchen staff??? We where there for at least 1 hour and a half but in that time they turned away alot of trade in my opinion not away to run a pub I've worked in the trade along time as a manager and this pub used to be great but now I'm surprised it's still open. My baby was getting a bit restless at this time they did open the kitchen my wife asked a member of bat staff if we can have a portion of beans for the baby just so she would be OK till we got home he said he will tell the kitchen staff to but a rush on it we where still waiting another 25 minutes. We then got up and left but not before my wife complained to the member of bar staff and the manageress was sitting at the end of the bar rapping cutlery and she never said a word to my wife not even a sorry. I will never step foot in there again.

Looks much nicer with the makeover. Not to sure about the Everton theme especially with the club moving away but that part can easily be altered. Not sure about the 45 min wait for a very small bowl of lukewarm chips today, on a Monday.

The food was really good and so were the young girls behind the bar. You can tell a good pub by how happy the staff are to serve you and have a bit of banter. My friends were visiting from Glasgow and insisted we go back again. Thank you all for a wonderful evening. The Black Horse puts other Greene King pubs to shame. Much appreciated. Scott COYB

Nice place for a drink staff very friendly

Visited on a week day afternoon. Quiet pub but food was good.

Cannot recommend the black horse enough. The staff are amazing and I just want to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you. You all always go above and beyond and the other day when I brought my family member in who has disabilities, Saun was amazing with him. I couldn't ask for any more from my local. Thank you.
