Fantastic old coaching inn in the heart of Old Whitby… amazing small plate food… real atmosphere and history to the place which was wonderful… it’s quite small so you have to be lucky to get a table… but well worth it…

Didn't stay here. Came for a drink and yapas ( delicious Yorkshire tapas). Lovely cosy pub. Landlord and landlady very hospitable. Definitely recommend.

Popped in for a pint and a coffee. Beer good . Lots of food being eaten by others , who all seemed to enjoy it. Great location. Dog friendly. Cash or card. Very good interaction with the bar personnel. This is the second time I've been in here and found it very good on both times. Only issue is it's not very big. 2 rooms with bar in both.

nice place and service. However, beer quality was very disappointing. Why? It tasted stale, was not cool enough and the ale selection was very mediocre.

Great Spot. A proper Pub, good range of beers and other drinks. Nice bar snacks would recommend the Cheese on Toast, more of a Rarebit only better. On a cold day try a hot toddy. This Pub will put a smile on your face.

Cental location and a good vibe. You will be told be leave if you have a party of more that 4 people. Service is grumpy. Beer is average.

Brilliant location, however refusing service to a group, especially when most have them have bought drinks already is horrifically bad business practice. If you can be this dismissive of custom, then you don’t deserve it.

My favourite pub in Whitby. Great range of beers, Friendly staff. Quite small so you often end up chatting to people next to you. Warm pork scratchings too!

The service was really really poor. The beer not much better. The guy behind the bar was just awful to almost everyone that came through the door. The beer is also crap. One to avoid.

Great pub, always pop in when in Whitby. It's always really popular. The lady who owns it is lovely, a real traditional pub with a good atmosphere. Good food yapas (Yorkshire tapas) good pint and dog friendly.

Great place. Warm welcome. Thought it was just a one roomed place, which was lovely and cosy, then found out it had a back larger room, serving meals, which looked good.

Had been going for a drink all weekend. Suddenly on Saturday night they added an extra £2 to a bill for two drinks.

We didn’t stay in the room. Every time we come to Whitby we call in this pub. Always a warm friendly welcome and environment - we enjoy the selection of beers and the Landlady is always friendly and welcoming.

This is a really lovley pub, feels like it hasn't changed in a hundred years (in a good way!). Theres a good selection of ales and the staff are all very friendly. The food is also excellent and served late! Particularly good as most other places that serve food close early locally. Had the french onion soup, was great and you could tell was homemade and not just chucked in the microwave. The pub is small but give it a go if youre in Whitby

Came here after a recommendation from a local YouTuber guide simply Whitby a must watch if you plan to visit Whitby A small but very quaint welcoming pub Dog friendly that does bandanas for the RNLI The place is very small so if you have prams and pushchairs they will need to be left out side (there is a notice as you walk in) They do serve food ypas (yorkshire tapas). Local beer served on draught. Called in a second night 9pm and was still able to order food I can recommend the French onion soup amazing. Warm pork scratchings served in a 1/2 pint glass was amazing. I have no connection to the simply Whitby YouTube channel this review and others of my visit to the town are done based on my own experience of visiting the town of Whitby.

Lovely quaint little pub, does a good pint of of old peculiar real ale. Stopped by for some lunch and a pint 🍺 food was delicious too and staff were very friendly and obliging Dog 🐶 friendly too

Wonderful stay in the center of Whitby. The room is located above the room, from which you cannot hear any noise. The rooms are quite large and although the location is dated, there is no lack of comfort. The whole team is really welcoming and nice. You can have lunch or dinner at the pub, or just stop to drink and have a chat with the patrons of the place or with the owners themselves who we found very nice. I would say it was one of the best stays I had here in England. We hope to return soon

Fantastic tiny, friendly old town pub! Great beers, interesting range of 'tapas style' snacks.. homemade chutney from landlady's mum... a lovely lady..!!

The pub is in a great location but as far as it goes .The rooms are very jaded old and worn out ,cracked window in the bathroom ,telly didnt work thats just the tip of the iceberg . At £180 pounds for the 2 nights a very poor show . No breakfast ,just crisp and biscuits in the bedroom ,not everyone idea of breakfast . We should have checked maybe but a pot of poridge which you do with hot water would have been better. On the whole whitby is a nice place had a lovely meal on the sat , as a birthday treat i guess it was good and you would exspect the pub is qeurky with it uneven floors but thats the nature of the place Shower not to bad says close the door so you dont set the alarms of ,maybe shouldnt leave big gaps at the top of the doors All in all could be better

We only had a couple of drinks but enjoyed the atmosphere, snacks and drinks selection.

What a laugh 😂 me and my pal had in here on Saturday afternoon...we seemed to have had a connection to a lot of the people that came in....we were all out of town visitors....from Leeds..Bradford...Manchester...even the landlord was from Leeds too.. So to those who my read this that was there that day....BIG HELLO 👋...

Called in for a pint before going back up the 199steps. Lovely old place. Atmosphere and character. Beer very expensive at £13.40 for 2pints. I’m not a rich American tourist I’m a retired bin man. Weatherspoons down the road is half the price. Love Whitby though.

And the owner kept us entertained during our stay. What a little treasure of a place, I've walked past it dozens of times. But NOT IT'S A STOP OFF WATERING HOLE. Cheers Ian. Cheers and Mrs Ian for the fantastic food x

A staple venue for us each time we visit this town. Great food and wonderful beer (Rhatas).

Didn't stay overnight, but did eat and have a few drinks in this cosy, friendly bar. Highly recommended.

Nice little quiet pub in a corner, not the most spacious but does it job and has all the drinks you want with a decent list of savoury snacks.

The fact that the Black Horse is small results in a very friendly atmosphere, most convivial. The Yorkshire tapas (yapas) are excellent. I would particularly recommend the pigs in blankets, served with 'old peculier' gravy and apple sauce. The previous statement is a hint at the 'icing on the cake - old peculier' on draft. There is a fine selection of other beers, but the 'old pec' is exquisite. Hope I haven't praised this pub too much, and too many go, because I'd be devastated if I couldn't get in the next time I go.

I think this is probably my favourite pub in Witby. Authentic historical pub with a great range of ales.

Visited while having a family day out in Whitby ( 2 adults and 2 teenagers) Called in for a drink and had some of their amazing sharing boards. Really good food, great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Landlord reduced my wife to tears after some really sarcastic and rude comments.

I live this place for a quiet Rhatas and some warm pork scratchings with the dog. Lovely welcoming and friendly place, where I'll happily sit with the hound to chill.

I can't remember a time that I've visited Whitby and NOT come in here at least once. Even as a kid. Excellent pub. If I ran a pub, I'd model it on this place. Excellently kept real ales. Super friendly and welcoming staff. Dog friendly. Simple bar-snacky food (Yapas). We had pigs in blankets with gravy dip and a gorgeous cheese on toast. Well done Black Horse for being consistently good for all of my living memory.

First visit whilst in Whitby , nice , cosy , traditional pub , small and unique . Friendly staff , dog friendly which is a must for us .Will go again !
