Came here for my 25th and we had a great time, staff are lovely and gave us plenty of advice on fun things to do like seeing the deer. We had a great time and they also do a fabulous pizza, the bar is gorgeous too.

Delightful stop off point on my trip from Lands End to John O Groats and back. The staff were lovely.... The food and drink simple but exactly what I was after, the staff were incredibly accomodating as I needed to stay for a while and use their WiFi and nothing was too much trouble. Music was at the right level for a Saturday night and I was made to feel welcome and comfortable. Could have given it 4 stars as it won;t be everyone's kind of hitel bar, but it's a five as it was exactly what I was after and the staff were lovely.

Our party of three stayed here for 10 nights whilst fishing in the area. This was our third visit and Derek and Tracey as usual made us welcome. The rooms are well equipped with en-suite facilities and the beds are very comfortable. Breakfasts are excellent and the hotel is spotlessly clean. A wonderful, friendly hotel. We will be back again next year!

We stayed here for a night in June 2019. The hosts were friendly, and the room large and clean. The bed was comfortable, and the shower was hot. The cook prepared a gluten-free fish and chips for me which I really appreciated. Breakfast was not included in the room price and was good though a little pricey perhaps. We enjoyed the location as we were able to easily wander around the town, and there was plenty of off-street parking at the back of the hotel. We would stay there again.

Visited here for a couple of days at the beginning of September. Greeted by a lovely guy who showed us our room. Handy as a base for having a wander round the gorgeous Galloway forest and exploring the local area.

We have travelled to newton Stewart twice now, as a family with two young. Hold ten (aged 8 and 22 months). Both times we have eaten here. Great menu with all the classics on and great kids menu. Food both times has been excellent and the puddings are a must!!! An added bonus for us was the children’s kitchen in the corner which entertained our 2 so we got to Have a drink in piece!!! Staff very friendly and you can eat either in the main bar or through in the quieter restaurant. Would highly recommend trying here for food- delicious and reasonably priced

The owners have really got this place right by focusing on what really matters to people. Familiar food choices but cooked and presented in a way that truly makes it stand out from the usual pub grub. Great service and a welcoming atmosphere, an amazing selection of gins and a great selection of ales. The style is relaxed, friendly and comfortable. The decor is country pub meets cosmopolitan bar. The owners have all the experience of people who have been in the business for years but mixed with the enthusiasm of people who have just opened their first place. The little touches such as a play kitchen for the kids make a big difference and tells me that the owners know what it takes to make meal times an enjoyable experience for all even frazzled parents! For me the biggest tell is that most of the people in the restaurant were locals. So go with the age old advice of 'eat where the locals eat' and add this to your list of 'must try'. I will definitely be back.

Having eaten twice at The Crown in Newton Stewart we decided to try the Black Horse - nothing wrong with The Crown we just wanted a change. We ate in the bar which is small but perfectly good. The food was excellent and we would recommend the Black Horse to anyone. There is a small range of beers available but no real ales, but that is a minor consideration. This is a good place to eat.

We were in Newton Stewart at the weekend for the Folk Festival and popped into the bar on Saturday. The bar was busy with good music playing from the jukebox. We decided that we would pop in on Sunday for dinner. We were not disappointed, 3 of us had the Sunday roast, choice of beef, chicken or gammon served in a large yorkshire pudding with all of the trimmings. 1 other had lasagne, homemade and really tasty. Staff were all friendly and made you feel welcome. Highly recommend! We will be back!

I had booked accommodation in another establishment but there was no-one there when I arrived and no response to my telephone calls (despite making previous arrangements to arrive early and to wait somewhere until my room was ready). So I asked for day use of a room at the Black Horse. The proprietor was very helpful and made me feel welcome. The room was comfortable, clean and together with the ensuite met all my needs. The proprietor called me a taxi when my other accommodation finally responded. I would definitely stay here again.

My partner and I had dinner here on Saturday - we were staying at Auchenlarie Caravan Park, and a 15 minute drive brought us to Newton Stewart. We choose the Black Horse based on previous TA reviews, and it truly lived up to its reputation. There is a lovely dining room to the right of the main bar - we were served by a very friendly Irishman (sorry, forgot to ask your name!). This is a cosy and intimate place to eat - the menu had plenty of choice for us - we plumped for half rack of ribs and soup to start, with lasagne and steak pie for mains. The food was piping hot and excellent - as good a beef lasagne as I've had anywhere, food beautifully presented and served with a smile. Really couldn't fault this - the biggest (and most welcome) surprise being the home-made chips - you don't get that often. Brilliant value for money means we'll definitely return when next in the area - thank you!

This was a second visit to this high street pub and restaurant. It is small, but, even so, the one-roomed bar has two large televisions, both playing the same programme, thank heavens. But their volumes were drowned by a gaggle of girls, competing with each other as to whom could be loudest. They were all locals and outdoing themselves taking selfies whilst screaming with laughter and going through the actual bar to have smokes.I felt sorry for a young girl who was with them as the child was being totally ignored. The drinks were fine as I am sure the food would have been as well, if we could have bared to stay around.

This is a very welcoming pub, clean and comfortable. It serves good beer and the food is well cooked and reasonably priced. The young lady and gentleman on duty while we were there, although friendly enough, would have been better concentrating on the customers, rather than "larking" around and chatting to customers who were clearly regulars. This did let the customer service levels slip, and we very nearly gave up waiting for the dessert menu to be brought over. (This is why the overall rating is very good, rather than excellent.)Having said all that, it wouldn't deter us from eating here again, should we find ourselves up this way again.

First visit to Newton Stewart and we picked The Black Horse Hotel. Good reviews out trip advisor, reasonable price and good reactivity out of staff when booking. All over it does what it says on the tin a good local hotel, practical, well placed with parking available. The bed could have been a Little more comfortable but when we asked for a quiet room we got it and the staff bent backwards to oblige. The icing on the cake was for us the food offered for diner, great size place of good pub food. All the classics from the ENORMOUS fish and chips and the SO WELL COOKED steak served on a plate with a small basket of hand cut chips and some beautifully flavoured pepper sauce. The dessert MIAM sticky toffee pudding with cream or ice cream so yummy (could do fit a coffee) after the dessert... I guess they have good beers too and the locals sure know it as they pile in at the week end.Not sure if we have left anything to explore in the area but if we came down this way we would have no problem of looking in again !

At the time of writing I am surprised it rates as only half way up the rankings in Newton Stewart. A dark terraced 'hole in the wall' old fashioned style town pub is obviously liked by its locals but can easily be missed on the way into town. By pot-luck I stopped with two motorcycling friends on a Friday evening close to the end of service. We 'chose' what they had left which was OK because we had travelled for a long time. The menu was simple and better than what I would expect for a small town pub: unpretentious and included a good selection beyond the normal pie, chips and battered, fried stodge of many pubs. I chose a poached white fish of the day and it was excellent, not overdone and rubbery. The vegetables were abundant and nicely cooked with delicious buttered new potatoes. Well done chef! A dish easily destroyed was treated with care.Friends also like their choice, plentiful and really good value for money. We were able to have one pint of beer before continuing to our nearby destination.Bar staff were friendly and so were locals, who were beginning a Friday night out. I can imagine the pub might suit youngsters later on in the evening but for us aging bikers it was great early on. A real lucky find and I would have no hesitation in trying it again.

I regularly use the Black Horse so my experiences are not based on a one-off. Firstly the beer, you'll always get an excellent pint and you can drink it in a bar that has a cosy ambience. The food is top quality Pub Grub with decent size portions, at a very reasonable price. Service is speedy, efficient and very friendly. You can eat in the restaurant or the bar, the restaurant being large enough for parties. If you're a football fan and want to take in a match, then Sky Sport is available in the bar. We popped into the bar recently on a Friday evening for a meal on the recommendation of a member of staff at the nearby petrol station. It looks a fairly run-of-the-mill pub from the exterior but inside it’s presumably geared up for bar meals with the bar itself partly screened off from a seating area and it was a comfortable enough set up in our view for couples or small groups. There’s a restaurant on site too but we didn’t see this - we made it in at 7.45pm with last orders for food due at 8.00pm. Full marks to the staff who weren’t put out by our late arrival or that of a few others after us (although we wondered if the chef was maybe cursing out of earshot!). Service was in fact very friendly, welcoming and courteous (Lisa was one of the two female staff we encountered). The menu includes a number of dishes with chips but we opted for the “Fish Friday” special - poached haddock in a cream sauce and served with mini new potatoes and salad (£5.95 each). It was perfectly tasty and nicely presented so we decided to take up the offer of dessert and both had their Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream (£4.50 each) which also went down very well. By the time we’d added a pint and a Coke our bill came to £25 which we thought was very good value for money.Toilets were a bit basic as you’d possibly expect in a bar but the only other negative point for us was that a couple of the patrons chose to stand in the doorway having a smoke (several times during our visit) and the smoke drifted inside to where we were sitting.

This is OK for lunch, but it tries to sell itself as a teahouse. But it closes at 3 on Saturday and Sunday, so no use at all.

This is a review of the Hotel as well as the restaurant.I was taking clients from the Lake District to Oban and decided to stay at the Creebridge House Hotel as I had stayed before, unfortunately the clients had failed to make a booking and I let them have my room at the Creebridge and booked a night at the Black Horse. It is on the High Street of Newton Stewart. The Hotel is quiet well appointed and has recently undergone some refurbishment everything seems fairly new and the bed was really comfortable. Entry to the Hotel was gained through the bar which does not give a great impression but the welcome was warm and genuine with a good sized room large with very nice furnishing although the T.V. needs upgrading but I imagine that is next. There is free Wifi and although my room overlooked the main road it was quiet and suppressed the noise level well. I eat in the bar although there is a restaurant as well, food was well priced and the Black Horse seems to be fairly popular although I was there on a Thursday night and it was quiet.I had the fish and chips and although a good portion and tasty I agree with another review about the grease on the fish, it would be good if the chef would dry it or allow it to drain for a few minutes. This is the main reason I have down rated it to four stars.Breakfast was good and the young woman who was organising (and may have been cooking the breakfast) was very welcoming. I would stay here again and would recommend it as a good budget hotel in the area. There are a couple of small points, if you are not going to answer the door to the hotel place a sign up saying that travellers need to access the hotel through the bar, and the food in the evening needs a bit of work as already mentioned.

Staying in Newton Stewart for a holiday we decided to eat locally. Unfortunately, on this occasion we were sorely disappointed. Food was cooked badly and fish was wet and over cooked (think it had been frozen previously). Disappointing and would not recommend

Just been for my dinner at the Black Horse and enjoyed it thoroughly! Menu choices are normal pub staples like fish and chips, a curry dish, a chicken dish and steak etc but all done well. The bar has a normal selection of beers and lagers, ( no real ales that I could see) but they were good and tasty.Service was excellent, very experienced and knowledgable and very helpful.Returning on Friday hopefully!

Thought we would try out the Black Horse for an evening meal. It's a while since we had last eaten there. There used to be a welcoming open fire in the lounge bar but they now have an electric coal effect one which gave the impression of heat but that was all. Central heating was off. We ordered a drink and decided not to order food. When we told the waiter it was too cold to eat he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. £6.10 for a pint of beer and a soda water and lime seemed a bit steep. A poor impression and we won't be going back.

Our school reunion was catered for professionally with a lovely buffet. Nothing was a problem for the staff. The dining room has had a lovely recent refit. Thanks for looking after us so well!

We have been here before on our last visit to Newton Stewart as this place is always so accommodating. The food is of such a good standard and their is good variety in the menu. The service (as last time) could not be faulted and they even let us bring our dog. Great job, and we will be returning on our next visit in the spring!

We ate here twice during our stay in Conifer Lodges in Newton Stewart. They seated us in the dining room for Sunday lunch when it was busy and we sat in the main bar area on our second visit. The staff were very friendly and the food and service was very good on both occassions with a wide choice on the menu for all tastes.

Thought we found the perfect place for our dinner, had big screen football to watch world cup, sold Tennents, did good pub grub and children welcome. All of above correct except good food. Fish n chips tasted as if they were from farmfoods, frozen fish out the box. Soup very thick. Side orders didn't appear. Service slow. Okay for a pint but that's it!

They provide a very good dinner, of fairly ordinary basic food, at reasonable price. There are 2 problems. The main one is opening hours, only offering evening meal on the weekend days. And given the timimg, sometimes the music from the bar is too obtrusive.

The SWI had our Christmas Meal here this year and pre ordered. I had the turkey and trimmings which was served on a huge platter and three huge slices of turkey. Everything cooked to perfection. I took the apple strudel and ice cream - great ice cream. Everyone enjoyed what they had ordered and a lovely atmosphere, and attentive serving staff who were pleased to see us and cheery.

We had a superb midweek supper here with friends in November. Bit of a trek from Dumfries but well worth the visit, and even closer to the M74 for anyone travelling up to Scotland in need of a refreshment. The haggis bites were delicious and the lamb kleftiko simply melted in the mouth. Their Chilean SB was extremely gluggable and very reasonably priced. Abbey and Jack were the best hosts. Highly recommended.

A late lunch stop off. Beautiful coffee, not an oz of fat in the pasty and a chocolate twist that I had eaten most of before I remembered to take a photo! Another quality visit. Thanks 😊

This is without a doubt the best place for lunch in Dumfries. The food just gets better and better. We ordered a selection of 4 dishes none of which disappointed 🥰
