I ordered the salmon and for 34 dollars the portions could’ve been bigger. It was very good but all I had was a piece of salmon and a small side of veggies. Would order something else next time as I would come back it was very good just not worth the money.

Food was good, the appetizers were excellent. The mushroom pasta has sort of a tangy flavor which wasn’t really my preference but well prepared. The bread and butter appetizer was so good but really bread and butter should be free at a restaurant. It is also extremely loud in here

Stopped in for a quick bite and was blown away. The roasted chicken and potatoes were absolutely amazing—perfectly seasoned, juicy, and full of flavor. My colleague got the pot pie, he was a old fella smiling ear to ear. 😁 On top of that, the service was top-notch. My server, a very friendly Irish gentleman, made the experience even better. They deserve five stars across the board. Highly recommend! 🤙

Our family has been frequenting this establishment for years. Was our first time back post-renovation and was thrilled with the whole experience. The staff was attentive to the two children in our party giving them crayons and coloring activities. Their food was out of the kitchen super fast, and was super delicious. The food for the adults entrees were spectacular. Delicious with great flavor profiles and well plated. It raises the bar amongst restaurants in the Morris county area which I am happy for. Well done!

The amount of food was mediocre! We went there last night for my sister’s birthday and the service was great but the food is terrible…. We stopped going there because of same reasons in the past but unfortunately they didn’t improve the menu . The Chef should be professional for a place like that ! We go to many restaurants in New Jersey but won’t go back to Black Horse again !

Some positives for sure, the renovation brought updates, windows, and a menu refresh that was much needed. The food itself was fine, solid but unremarkable and the staff friendly but rushed due to the crowd. The downside? We were seated at a table by the bar and it was deafening, not only due to the crowds at the bar but music playing on top of that in the background which made a normal conversation impossible. Also, people waiting at the bar literally had their backs touching our table making an uncomfortable eating experience literally because hard and narrow benches offer no comfort but also having those people touching our table. Vegetarian entree options are limited in case that’s important to someone. I would assume lunch would be easier as would other days of the week other than a Saturday night.

1 star for food. 0 if I could. Beautiful establishment but the food was awful. No seasoning on my dish, not even basic salt and pepper. The salmon was smelly. The French fries were greasier than Mac Donald’s fries. For the prices that they are charging, please put out some quality food on your guests tables. My husband ordered a pickle juice cocktail, and all he tasted was vodka in it, no pickle juice. I ordered a Diet Coke and it was flat. I hope they take a deeper look into their food situation and correct it before they start losing their customers. Which would be a shame because it really is a beautiful place.

Went back for my birthday this past week for the first time since the renovations and was left feeling a bit disappointed. While the service was great, friendly and attentive, and the food wasn’t bad, the general vibe and menu felt like they’ve lost the purpose. The dining area is still pretty cozy but the bar area definitely feels too modern now, and the employee attire, menu and prices are definitely more “upscale” inspired. There’s plenty of modern upscale restaurants in the area, there are very few 280+ year old pubs, and I don’t think people generally choose the pub with the expectation of collared shirts, pristine white countertops and smaller, delicately plated portions. The menu lacks a lot of the typical pub fare, though it retained fish and chips and the pot pie, the later of which I ordered. It wasn’t bad, but it was a step down from what it used to be, with the portion being smaller and the puff pastry on top noticeably less puffy. I also ordered the wings and while the stable sauce is delicious, the wings themselves were pretty sad. There was very little meat on the bones and half of them were tough and overcooked (likely due to said lack of meat). I’m inclined to blame this more on the choice of supplier rather than the kitchen directly, but I’m a strong believer that a quality wing is a core part of any bar menu. As whole, there’s still some promise in this place and I’ll be back at least once or twice more. I’m hopeful management is receptive of feedback, particularly during this earlier stage of reopening.

We got together with friends and enjoyed a very nice dinner tonight. We loved the noticeable changes to the decor and freshly updated look to the restaurant. Gabriel took great care to keep us happy. The manager checking up on us was much appreciated and the servers were attentative and cheerful. I am very glad to know we can look forward to coming in and great food once again. When closed for the year everything was sorely missed. I loved the delicious crock of French Onion soup and the Chicken dish placed on a bed of mashed potatoes and carrots. The chicken was moist with fork tender veggies. My husband had the Fish and Chips that had an impressive amount of food. The white fish was perfectly fried and came with tons of fries and a side of crunchy well dressed cole slaw. No dessert this time but will make sure to save room to try one next time. Welcome back!

Our recent visit to the Black Horse Pub, which has undergone significant renovations, left us feeling quite disappointed. Unfortunately, the historic charm that once drew us to the venue has been replaced by a modern and quite noisy atmosphere that lacks the inviting ambiance we remembered. Although our waitress was undeniably attentive and friendly throughout our meal, her service alone could not compensate for the overall unsatisfactory dining experience. The menu options were limited, with a noticeable absence of vegan and gluten-free selections. This was particularly disappointing given the increasing demand for diverse dietary choices. Additionally, the prices were remarkably high considering the mediocre quality of the food and portion size we received. We started with the Smashed Avocado specifically requesting it without jalapeños, but to our dismay, it arrived with them included. We were informed that it could not be prepared without jalapeños. For my appetizer, I ordered shrimp, which was served at an unappetizing room temperature. It was accompanied by burnt chips that were poorly seasoned and had an awful flavor. This was a letdown, especially for a restaurant that positions itself as a quality dining establishment. When it came time for the main course, I ordered an "Entree" salad topped with grilled salmon, but to my surprise, it was merely the size of a side salad. The salmon was tiny and disappointing; it tasted more like it had been frozen than freshly prepared, and the skin was left on. My husband ordered a burger but could not specify his preferred level of doneness; we were told the chef would decide for him. Yes, that is correct; he could not order the burger to his liking; instead of the medium-rare burger he desired, it was served more on the well-done side since that is what the chef felt would be best. To make matters worse, the burger arrived without a roll, leaving my husband confused about what he had ordered. Given that we used to be regular patrons of the Black Horse, it is disheartening to say that our experience this time fell so short. After this visit, we have decided not to return anytime soon, as we had hoped for much more from a place we once loved.

We're so happy to be back at our favorite local spot in Mendham! We've visited twice since the re-opening—once for a walk-in brunch on a Saturday (we called ahead to check availability on short notice, and were lucky they had space—but as we were leaving, it was PACKED!) and again for dinner on a weeknight. Reservations are a must at this point. The food is still excellent, and servers David & Kieran have been wonderful. The pickle martini is a must-try (as highly recommended!). We also really enjoyed the contemporary music and overall atmosphere. As mentioned, reservations are required, though we do hope to return as walk-ins when possible in the future. Currently, there's complimentary valet parking, but we'd prefer the convenience of self-parking for ease—just a personal preference!

Visited with my parents after the recent renovation. It looks beautiful inside and the food was delicious. I like the modern touches that been added. I know this might sound a little silly but I kind of wish that the people who were worked there were more casually dressed. They were all dressed in business casual style and it just seemed a bit off. One thing I'll add is that my dad used to love their chicken pot pie but definitely did not love it this time. It was very small and the pastry wasn't really a pastry on top, it was more like a cracker. The menu is still a work in progress it seems like, so I'd keep this in mind. My reuben was delicious but very greasy. One addition, our server was so sweet. Loved her.

Okay let me add my two cents. The reno is nice, they did a good job for the space they have to work with. It’s clean and modern but still has that old school feel. Went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was fairly busy. Our waiter, young girl, super sweet and accommodating! You get a lot of points for having Coke in glass bottles (best kind) but you need to give the glasses filled up w/ way more ice. Apps were good, we got guac (interesting flavor twist), tuna tartare (not as fresh as I am used to so let’s just say it’s average) and burrata (classic, can’t screw that up). For meals we tried the FOS (classic and good), chicken sandwich (tomato was mush and gross. Also the chicken was a little too thick so it freaked me out), and Cobb salads w/ grilled chicken (pretty good). We had trouble getting the olive oil out of the thing so we just had to unscrew the top. I think I need to come back for dinner & try a drank and then I will update my review.

Is it the Black Horse Tavern I grew up going to every Thursday night in middle school and high school with my parents? No. Is it the Black Horse that would give you a hug and a free drink if you had a bad day? No. But is it SO much better than it was before the renovation? Absolutely, yes. The vibe has definitely shifted from the cozy, familiar spot I once knew, but the improvements are hard to ignore. The updated decor gives it a fresh, modern feel without completely losing its charm. The food and service have both seen noticeable upgrades since before the renovation, and everything does feel more polished and thoughtful. It’s not the same Black Horse from my childhood, but it’s found a new groove that still makes it worth visiting.

We love the Black Horse! So glad it has reopened. The renovation was well done and the place feels refreshed and clean. We’ve been twice so far and the food has been delicious. So far we have tried the burger, steak dip, fish & ships, wings, and kids have tried the burger, pasta, and chicken fingers. Everyone was happy. The vibe is comfortable for a date but is still very family friendly with coloring for the kids to keep them entertained. The only minor negative is the cocktails, a Manhattan, hasn’t been consistent yet. One night it was so light it was almost clear. The second time we were there it was amber and perfectly made. I know there is new staff so it may take a few weeks. Staff is wonderful including management

I am a local and was looking forward to the re-opening of the Black Horse Tavern and was hoping it would be comparable to their other restaurants, especially Towne. Walking in the renovations did not blow anyone away. It really seemed like they just refreshed the place. They had such an opportunity to make the space feel more modern while keeping with the tradition. We were first seated at one of the stalls (booths) and we had to move as the lights above those tables are glaring and harsh. The wine menu was minimal and for the most part only offered California wines, although it was hard to tell as they gave no information about each of the wines. We all felt the menu was uninspiring and lacked creativity. There were no specials. Our party started with the Tuna Tartare. The flavors were good, presentation was good, the tuna itself was subpar. My main dish, salmon, was awful. It tasted like overcooked frozen fish. I didn’t even eat half of it. My companions short rib dish was equally unimpressive. I did taste their cornbread and it had no flavor and extremely dry. A grocery store mix comes out better. The salad we had was mediocre. The service was good, especially for a new restaurant. The food came out on time, although should have been much hotter. The restaurant should have aimed much higher. Morris County has so many delicious choices with great atmosphere as well. Black Horse Tavern missed the mark in every way, especially when they are charging such high prices. Maybe I would go back to try a hamburger at the bar, but even that is unlikely. I prefer to spend my money on fresh, inspired, creative, mouth watering food. I’m so disappointed as I know we were all hoping for much more from this establishment. Don’t waste your money.

Good local spot with decent pub food where some dishes are definitely better than others. We always preferred the Tavern over the pub for the menu choices and the quality of the food but it seems that the tavern was a victim of Covid - now only available for private rentals. The pub has good burgers but another traditional pub option, the fish and chips, was disappointing the one time I tried it. The word is that they are closing down everything from March through the summer for some needed renovations. I’ll be looking forward to seeing hopefully an improved atmosphere and menu.

Management is attentive and engaged, place seems very organized and efficient. Servers are wonderful. Food is remarkably back on point, feels fresher and menu has more interesting choices. The Prime Rib Panini is fantastic. Wine list finally includes an Italian red (thank you!) beer list could use some non-IPA craft cans or drafts (need fruited sours!) Wish they’d bring back the famous yellow layer cake with chocolate icing. But just so happy to have my favorite cozy fireside pub back in the rotation. We also had the pleasure of meeting Jason who is the manager. He was also very pleasant and we had a very nice conversation. My friends and I look forward to our next at the Black Horse.

This place advertises itself as New Jersey’s oldest continually running restaurant dating back to 1742, but when we got there, the old tavern was closed and our reservation was actually in an annex building. It was big, packed to the rafters with people and screaming infants, and the obligatory live musician, singing other peoples’ songs. This was definitely not what we signed up for. Won’t be back.

Excellent food but expensive and the barn is lacking in comfort

The service was ok, didn't like sitting by the kitchen just very noisy. Also for being a steak house I thought the menu would have had a larger variety of steak. We drive over 1 hr to get there and won't ever do that again not worth it.

Ok I have been here a few times and I rarely give out a five star review across the board so let me just explain. There is nothing this place needs to do to improve what they have going on. The atmosphere here is great reminds me of visiting some of the pubs in Ireand without being and Irish pub. The foods solid I have no complaints although I always like to think I can improve a dish. And the staff has always been polite and diligent. The drink specials always seem to impress me. I just think you would be hard pressed to be disappointed here, definitely give this spot a try.

Friendly welcome on arrival and staff very friendly throughout or stay at this great traditional local pub. The food was amazing, fresh and very tasty with good sized portions offering value for money. The rooms located out of the main pub in separate wing, once inside they are very clean. Although a remote location, it’s a lovely area if you fancy walking or cycling around the Lincolnshire Wolds

having read the 2 terrible reviews I can not believe this is the same pub.we were on bikes and knew the pub was open. very warm welcome on arrival, fab menu made it a difficult choice. i had melt in the mouth brisket and my wife salmon also perfectly cooked, washed down with a lovely pint, no room for puds but had a nice pot of tea. will definately return.

Visited on a pleasant fall weekend afternoon 2023. Everything was.... mediocre. Food, service, atmosphere, price. Living in the region for over 10 years and had noticed that no one ever said much about this place. Had passed by many times, so finally stopped in. In short, there was nothing that would cause us to stop by again. It just wasn't very good. I think it's getting by on local loyalty due to lack of other options.

We celebrated my fiancée Vanessa's birthday at Black Horse Tavern and couldn't be happier. The atmosphere was cozy, our server was top-notch, and the food was divine. The place buzzed with a warm sense of community that made Vanessa's special day even more memorable. Big thanks to the team for a fantastic evening!

I used to love this place. Stopped by for lunch and was looking forward to what used to be my favorite chicken pot pie.poor service from the get go. took awhile to get service even though it was pretty empty. Finally got my wine in a drippy wet wine glass. Then out comes a very burned pot pie. The ( now 3rd person) server drops it in front of me and turns around and walks away. After getting her back I had to ask for one that wasn’t burned. Why would the staff send out food that way? Disappointing.

Absolutely horrendous. Sat for one and a half hours before starters arrived. Soup was nice but came with 3 triangles of bread instead of crusty roll as stated. Daughter couldn’t even eat her main as the fish smelt awful. Chef looked scruffy and no chef clothes. Food was awful. Never coming again.

Stumbled across this delightful pub whilst exploring the area. Warm, friendly greeting upon arrival. Considering its located in a small village the menu was large and varied. The food was well cooked and presented .... the landlady very engaging throughout despite being very busy. Generous portions at a good price, real value for money. Locals are lucky to have this on their doorstep. Well wort a visit.

Loved my Onion Soup... haven't had it in awhile and it didn't disappoint. The Chicken Potpie was delicious, loaded with more chicken than vegetables, a tasty gravy and covered with puff pastry. My husband really liked the Squid Ink Pasta with Bay Scallops he ordered. His side salad was fresh and a nice mix of veggies. The Pub's interior is very interesting...almost feels like a restored barn? Would have liked to see the inside of the old tavern, but only used for large parties. The Tavern/Pub's location has been serving travellers since 1742!

After having had a fantastic experience here midweek during the summer, we promised ourselves we would be back for Sunday dinner. We booked by email, which was confirmed within minutes, Howe when we arrived there was no record of the booking. I was able to find the confirmation email. We were told that we could be accommodated but it would have to be in the bar area as there were 3 other bookings which already had restaurant tables reserved. We were advised to pick a table and they would set it up for us. We showed them where we would like to sit and waited for someone to bring some seating to the table. After 10 minutes we were still standing so found a different table which had seats in place. (We had already informed them that my husband was recovering from a broken ankle) Eventually the waitress came and gave us cutlery and placemats but no salt and pepper. She took our meat orders and I asked whether the veg would include cauliflower cheese, as I would like to not have it, as I have an allergy/intolerance. We waited a further half an hour for our meals, which came with the vegetables served on a tray, including the cauliflower cheese. There was only one spoon which was resting in the cheese sauce so I had to request another one. I then dished myself up a spoonful of swede/carrot mash and one broccoli floret. I did try to dish up some cabbage but found that when lifted from the plate, the cabbage came out from under the cauliflower cheese and covered in the sauce, so I had to not have cabbage. After the meal, the waitress came to clear the table. She dropped some vegetables on the tablecloth and asked if we wanted puddings to which I responded yes. After waiting for 38 minutes with no sign of the waitress to clean the table or take our pudding order, we decided to leave. On taking our payment the bar staff asked if everything had been ok, so I mentioned the above. He simply said, ‘sorry about that ‘but the mains were ok?’ I chose not to continue with the conversation, as my husband had overheard the barman say that he was going to rip someone’s head off. We are really disappointed as we had been telling everyone about how good our experience in the summer was. To top it all, there was a very large dog in the area which smelled strongly and a group of young children also came and used the pool table right next to us, despite there being a notice advising that nobody under 16 was allowed to use it. Another customer did point it out but was ignored. One or two little things we could have overlooked/forgiven but unfortunately there were too many today and we won’t be back
