One of my favorite places. I drive all the way from Bergen county to come here. Can’t wait till they re-open.

Closed till Fall 2024 for renovations. We had a good afternoon, martinis and oysters were delicious. Service was okay, not friendly but competent.

Good local spot with decent pub food where some dishes are definitely better than others. We always preferred the Tavern over the pub for the menu choices and the quality of the food but it seems that the tavern was a victim of Covid - now only available for private rentals. The pub has good burgers but another traditional pub option, the fish and chips, was disappointing the one time I tried it. The word is that they are closing down everything from March through the summer for some needed renovations. I’ll be looking forward to seeing hopefully an improved atmosphere and menu.

Food was okay and the service was fine. It's definitely a family place. It was a bit too noisy for my liking but the waitress was nice and seating was a bit tight.

Great place for lunch. Cozy bar. Always order the onion soup. Good hamburgers.

I was there last night and ordered the salmon. Unfortunately I had no clue it was served over ice cold pasta. You should note that one the menu.

Went for the first time yesterday. Food was ok. Good atmosphere. Excellent server-Gabby. Her service made the experience. Host was not the friendliest guy in the world.

The food was excellent! I had the fried calamari and the hot pretzels for appetizers, and both were delicious! Atmosphere is rustic and lively. It was decorated nicely for the holidays. We went on a Friday night and they had live music. Music was good but a little loud for my taste. Overall, we had a good experience and nice night out!

Burgers were dry. Calamari was good. Portions decent but generally food is pricier. Nice decor and atmosphere but really would not come back for food.

Had a party of 130 after a concert and these guys just knocked it out of the park. Great service, great food and a great atmosphere. Thanks to everyone for doing what you do!!

Very good experience at this tavern. First the ambience is old world charm. Very quaint, you instantly feel transported to another era. Second the food was really good. We tried a couple of appetizers, entrees and drinks. Everything was good, burgers were cooked to perfection. The chicken pot pie was fabulous. Lastly, the service was great. Our server Lindsey was very attentive and we were very well taken care of. We had a great evening and will be back soon.

Ambiance was great, food was okay

Loving the changes Black Horse has made, we had stopped going for a while due to food/service going downhill. Recently returned twice and it’s back to one of my favorites. Management is attentive and engaged, place seems very organized and efficient. Servers are wonderful. Food is remarkably back on point, feels fresher and menu has more interesting choices. The Prime Rib Panini is fantastic. Wine list finally includes an Italian red (thank you!) beer list could use some non-IPA craft cans or drafts (need fruited sours!) Wish they’d bring back the famous yellow layer cake with chocolate icing. But just so happy to have my favorite cozy fireside pub back in the rotation. For anyone who gave up on it, def give it a chance for redemption.

It was such a pleasure to eat at the Black Horse. Myself and the couple that I was with drove close to an hour from their home. Brandon was our server. He was warm, inviting and accommodating. We were allowed to enjoy dinner at a comfortable pace. The food was excellent. One of my guess had the fillet. He said it was one of the best steaks he's ever had. We also had the pleasure of meeting Jason who is the manager. He was also very pleasant and we had a very nice conversation. My friends and I look forward to our next at the Black Horse.

This place advertises itself as New Jersey’s oldest continually running restaurant dating back to 1742, but when we got there, the old tavern was closed and our reservation was actually in an annex building. It was big, packed to the rafters with people and screaming infants, and the obligatory live musician, singing other peoples’ songs. This was definitely not what we signed up for. Won’t be back.

Excellent food but expensive and the barn is lacking in comfort

Everything about this place is excellent. Delicious drinks, and food. The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is excellent. I go every time I'm in NJ. Pictured here the Mediterranean Grilled Shrimp. 10/10

The service was ok, didn't like sitting by the kitchen just very noisy. Also for being a steak house I thought the menu would have had a larger variety of steak. We drive over 1 hr to get there and won't ever do that again not worth it.

All of it was SO good Geraldine was so kind and entertaining definitely would come back.

Ok I have been here a few times and I rarely give out a five star review across the board so let me just explain. There is nothing this place needs to do to improve what they have going on. The atmosphere here is great reminds me of visiting some of the pubs in Ireand without being and Irish pub. The foods solid I have no complaints although I always like to think I can improve a dish. And the staff has always been polite and diligent. The drink specials always seem to impress me. I just think you would be hard pressed to be disappointed here, definitely give this spot a try.

When in the Mendham area, this is my go to....outstanding food and drink, never disappoints

Friendly welcome on arrival and staff very friendly throughout or stay at this great traditional local pub. The food was amazing, fresh and very tasty with good sized portions offering value for money. The rooms located out of the main pub in separate wing, once inside they are very clean. Although a remote location, it’s a lovely area if you fancy walking or cycling around the Lincolnshire Wolds

having read the 2 terrible reviews I can not believe this is the same pub.we were on bikes and knew the pub was open. very warm welcome on arrival, fab menu made it a difficult choice. i had melt in the mouth brisket and my wife salmon also perfectly cooked, washed down with a lovely pint, no room for puds but had a nice pot of tea. will definately return.

Visited on a pleasant fall weekend afternoon 2023. Everything was.... mediocre. Food, service, atmosphere, price. Living in the region for over 10 years and had noticed that no one ever said much about this place. Had passed by many times, so finally stopped in. In short, there was nothing that would cause us to stop by again. It just wasn't very good. I think it's getting by on local loyalty due to lack of other options.

Went on Sunday ! For lunch 🥙 busy place. Got a drink at the bar an we were quickly seated a party of 4 Pretzels calamari an brussel sprouts 🌱 are delicious 🤤!! Chicken 🐔 pot pie 🥧 is incredible!! Caesar salad 🥗 top notch Took desserts home. Yellow cake 🍰 with fudge frosting and bananas 🍌 pie 🥧. Our server I believe Kathleen. Said she’s been for 37 years working with them Super nice lady who loves her job and customers Will be back soon

We celebrated my fiancée Vanessa's birthday at Black Horse Tavern and couldn't be happier. The atmosphere was cozy, our server was top-notch, and the food was divine. The place buzzed with a warm sense of community that made Vanessa's special day even more memorable. Big thanks to the team for a fantastic evening!

Great atmosphere and the bartenders are top notch. Fun place to go and it’s kid friendly. Food is good, but not consistent. Sometimes it’s great and others it’s terrible. The owners own a bunch of restaurants and it’s obvious they stopped caring about the food quality here since it’s the only bar in town.

I used to love this place. Stopped by for lunch and was looking forward to what used to be my favorite chicken pot pie.poor service from the get go. took awhile to get service even though it was pretty empty. Finally got my wine in a drippy wet wine glass. Then out comes a very burned pot pie. The ( now 3rd person) server drops it in front of me and turns around and walks away.After getting her back I had to ask for one that wasn’t burned.Why would the staff send out food that way? Disappointing.

Nothing is fresh here at the Black Horse Inn. I review restaurants and watch who delivers the supplies for restaurants. How farm to table is really freezer to plate. How can USA Foods and Sysco say they sell fresh. Fresh frozen is more like it. Pre-scored burgers? Check. Frozen soups? Check. Frozen fish? Check. Ok the salad greens are bagged. Fresh enough, right? I’ve eaten at the BHI and the Pub since the Knapps owned the place in the 1970’s. It wasn’t any better then either.

Absolutely horrendous. Sat for one and a half hours before starters arrived. Soup was nice but came with 3 triangles of bread instead of crusty roll as stated. Daughter couldn’t even eat her main as the fish smelt awful. Chef looked scruffy and no chef clothes. Food was awful. Never coming again.

Fantastic Pub and great food we had a family gathering and Had a fantastic time the service was really good all the staff were pleasant and helpful. There were 8 people in all and every meal was superb . Thank you Black Horse .😀

Stumbled across this delightful pub whilst exploring the area. Warm, friendly greeting upon arrival. Considering its located in a small village the menu was large and varied. The food was well cooked and presented .... the landlady very engaging throughout despite being very busy. Generous portions at a good price, real value for money. Locals are lucky to have this on their doorstep. Well wort a visit.

Loved my Onion Soup... haven't had it in awhile and it didn't disappoint. The Chicken Potpie was delicious, loaded with more chicken than vegetables, a tasty gravy and covered with puff pastry. My husband really liked the Squid Ink Pasta with Bay Scallops he ordered. His side salad was fresh and a nice mix of veggies. The Pub's interior is very interesting...almost feels like a restored barn? Would have liked to see the inside of the old tavern, but only used for large parties. The Tavern/Pub's location has been serving travellers since 1742!

Everything here was perfect! The Honey Stung Chicken was so tender, crispy and packed with flavor!

Would not recommend. We had to wait 35 mins for our meal and with that we had to ask where our food was. We were told they were busy which took us by surprise as there were only 10 people in the restaurant and 4 people outside eating, so I can’t imagine how they would cope if the place was even half full. The meal we had was so not worth the money, I had a chicken breast that was cooked in a bbq sauce but tasted like the sauce had come from a bottle, 3 so called new potatoes which were actually salad potatoes, 2 very small florets of broccoli, overcooked small batons of carrots and soggy swede, there was also some kind red cabbage in the corner of the dish which tasted foul. To be honest the staff didn’t seem bothered so we ate what we could, paid and left, never to return 😡

Can't cook a filet mignon right....horrible selection of dark beers.

The staff was wonderful. Very friendly and attentive. We sat in the curved booth. It was a bit dated. The carpet needs replacement (or just removal), and there was broken wood around the back of the booth. The food left much to be desired. We had to add salt to everything. The guacamole was extremely bland. There was no salt, pepper, lime, or cilantro. It was just a smashed avocado with 3-4 pieces of diced tomato and a few pieces of onion sprinkled on top. Even the chips were bland. The herb crusted salmon was a piece of plain baked salmon with an herb puree drizzled over it after being cooked. It was tasty, but certainly not what was name of the dish described. There was nothing 'herb crusted' about it. The spiced carrot puree side tasted like boiled carrots that were blended in a food processor without any spices. Jarred carrot baby food likely has more flavor. The scallop linguine was also bland. They serve bay scallops instead of sea scallops. The fried calamari appetizer had good flavor, but was very greasy. The wine and cheese bubbly shrimp was mediocre. The shrimp were very small, like what you might get in chain restaurant that buys in bulk. I would actually expect this appetizer at a chain restaurant. I can't say enough how wonderful the staff was. Our waitress was great. The food was very disappointing.

Food was quite good., the nachos were great ,the atmosphere only added to our experience . Enjoy a rustic experience at this restaurant.

the bar atmosphere are great…if they’re open. Recommend calling ahead because they do close at random times, & not at the times they leave on their website. Please update your hours so they reflect when you guys are actually open/closed.

Excellent place to meet friends for dinner.

Unfortunately it's gone down hill over the past few years. Food is just ok but the worst part is the service. From the moment in the door; the hostess looked like she was miserable. Then our server was so slow... Even just for a water... And at the end waited 15 minutes for her to collect the check. And not even a goodbye thanks for coming on the way out. So poor food and service. It's off our list.

Visiting from California, this place was great. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Love the inside, outside and history of building. Food was delicious.

The Black Horse continues its tradition of amazing service and one of the best atmospheres in Morris county. It's a great place to meet friends and entertain etc.

Good beer, food and service. First time here, I was thinking it was going to be expensive; but, the prices were good. So we're the portions. If u like Brussels sprouts, you will like the appetizer. Very cozy with a fireplace and all. I'll definitely go back. The bar was a nice size, not exactly a great place to watch sports - more of a cozy place. A few beers on tap but nothing major.

The food was delicious, the servers very nice and the atmosphere fun. I would go there again.

Just had a couple of drinks. Really like this place, been going on and off for years, but service at the bar this time was kinda meh. It's a unique place with a good vibe otherwise. Definitely a good stop!!

Had a decent Rib-Eye steak. Better than Redstones. Everyone was pleased with their entrée. Nice size Martini and good house Cab. Onion Soup and Salad were very good, as was the Cheesecake. Just don't order Cappuccino. It was very weak with no coffee flavor.

The crispy mozzarella, bibb lettuce & pear salad and salmon on carrot puree were all excellent. The Black Horse Celebration Cake was excellent if you like heavy desserts.

The Black Horse Pub is an excellent choice for ambiance and good food. The servers are also excellent.

Went there last night. Food was good, service was slow but Katherine was very busy. The main problem was the young dark haired hostess. She needs a lesson in customer service and how to speak like an adult. She was just nasty.

Had a very pleasant nights stay, very warm and friendly staff, food was tremendous, large car park for your pride and joy. Will definitely visit again. Col.

Great service and ambiance... Really really wish the food was better. Why go through the trouble of breading and frying calamari if you’re going to drown it in a sweet glaze? Just serve it with lemon and a side of marinara. Don’t over think it. Baby back ribs were simultaneously under seasoned, overcooked, and overdressed. There is a difference between “falling off the bone” and having zero texture / chew. The sauce was cloyingly sweet, it was not actually glazed onto the ribs where it’d have developed some nice caramelization and complexity, it appeared to be just doused on after cooking. If you’re going, I would stick with their burgers and fries, the fried chicken isn’t bad either but comes in this gargantuan portion. In general they could probably stand to decrease portion size and increase quality.

We stopped here for lunch today. The 2 young gents serving were super friendly and very attentive without being intrusive. Our food was fabulous we ended up with 3 courses as the food was so good. The braised beef was melt in your mouth tasty would definitely recommend this good value great food pub

The worst service ever didn't even deserve 20 percent

Disappointing!! No mention at all on website that the original restaurant is only open for parties. My wife and I went out of our way to dine in the oldest pub in NJ. Instead, we ate at the bar inside the old barn. Her cheeseburger was ok. I had a cheesesteak that absolutely sucked. Very dry ground beef with a couple slices of yellow American cheese on top. That and fries for $17. And this was a special! I would not recommend this place at all.

One of our favorite places to go! Sadly, I guess they've been bought by a chain restaurant company. Menu is not what it was (very generic chain restaurant food), food is not as good, prices are sky-high, and the banana chocolate pie (the very best thing to eat) is gone. Very disappointing....

Great food and friendly service. Great for kids - we had 4 families with kids and the staff was very acomodating. Chicken pot pie was really great. Bison burger was good, with Worcestershire flavoring. Get a reservation!

This is a hidden gem. Everything I've ever tried is yummy. The winner for me is the wine bubbly shrimp. Also, try the apple pie sangria, it's delicious.

Parked here before our six-mile round walk as we’d booked in for Sunday lunch. Although there isn’t a separate Sunday lunch menu, the regular menu, special boards and extra specials the staff told us about (great memory) gave plenty of options. For starters we chose Whitby crab salad, pigeon breast (amazing) and Brie brûlée. Mains were duck breast, rabbit, chorizo and sun-dried tomato pie and beer braised Lincolnsire beef-all were great portions and delicious. The service from the two young gentlemen was outstanding; we all said what a credit to your families you were. Dog and children friendly. Will definitely return.

This is the second time this year that we have stayed at the Black Horse and we will definitely be back. We were made to feel very welcome. The room was very clean and comfortable. The food was brilliant and the real ale excellent.

Stayed with friends for 4 nights. We were greeted by the hosts who were very friendly for the entire stay. The food was so good we didn't bother to find anywhere else and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. We did have to ask for more tea, coffee and milk in the rooms but it was given straight away. A very enjoyable stay which we highly recommend.

Great service. still one of the main restaurants in Mendham that offers a consistent menu, with decent prices and you wont leave with your pockets crying. Kids, Families, great place to watch sports.

Absolutely brilliant hosts...food amazing... accommodayion spacious and very clean..had a fantastic time the 4 nights we were staying. Great location for Cadwell Park for bike racing and just a 20minute drive to Lincoln for a great day shopping. We WILL be back.

I had a Bison Burger that was awesome! My partner had a Crispy Eggplant sandwich that was equally as good. We ate outside, so I can't say much about the inside of the place, but the food was great.

Lousy food, even for casual food. Tasteless. Both the muscles + the Ceasars salad were absolutely flavorless, cardboard. Won't go here again!

Food was mediocre at best. Typical pre made burger and overcooked. Two of dishes at our table were described as “awful”. The wings were pretty good. Service was horrible. Place was pretty empty and they appeared to have a full staff, but we could never get our waitress to get anything. Had to ask for water 3 times before finally getting it. Sodas were flat. Also, charged for a refill????? Who does that? When the “experience” was over, we actually had to get up to find our waitress to get the check. I would really expect better in the area and at the prices. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

I just moved to the area on Saturday and this was the first restaurant we've eaten at here. Everything was fantastic and our waitress Kathleen went above and beyond for us. The food and drinks were delish and the outdoor seating is perfect on a summer night. We will definitely be back

Drinks and atmosphere you can’t beat. Burgers acceptable pub fair. But do NOT order the Tuna Nicoise Toast. It says it’s seared rare tuna with the salad components on toasted baguette. The baguette wasn’t toasted, and the Tuna was the worst part. Not only was it not rare, it was as white and dry as canned tuna. Very disappointing and that dish was certainly NOT worth $26.

Excellent meal was had by all of our party and the. service. was excellent and very friendly Imagine Parking may become an issue when very busy.

Awesome place , great food, supper expensive. $$$.
