The atmosphere and service was nice, but the food unfortunately was very disappointing. The vegan options are very unimaginative and were not particularly enjoyable. There was not a lot of flavour or effort went into the preparation, cooking or ideas. I do not recommend going here if you are vegetarian or vegan. I had the risotto and my husband had the falafel burger.

Just had THE most amazing dinner here! Food was absolutely superb, staff and service excellent. However… we were sat next to the main front door which was constantly in use and we seemed to be in a permanent draught 🥶.. really took the edge off the evening for me, as i felt I was in a walkway and it was chilly tonight. I’ll definitely ask for a table on the upper level if there’s a next time.

We came for a meal at Bistro on the Quay after a team event with a number of colleagues. The food was a 3-course set menu we had pre-ordered the week before. The service and food was exceptionally good, especially being served to a group of 17. I enjoyed squash soup, fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding but everyone was commenting on their own food as to how great it was. Service was prompt and polite and the staff were understanding when a number of people had to cancel courses to catch trains. Absolutely faultless and would definitely return given the chance.

Was in town on a business trip and had no booking, walking down the quay saw the nice looking menu and were seated quickly. Loved the food, I had plaice as a main, and thanks to the professional service got to sample some of the incredible raclette even though we weren’t hungry enough to order a full portion. Great selection of wine by the glass. Overall a great experience.

Went here this evening for a work meal. Fair to say I feel the place has gone down hill or just a one off bad evening meal. Won’t be returning any time soon. The best things were the starters, the steak I asked for medium well done as I know some places medium is still quite rare. However this was more than well done was like charcoal. Also said on menu comes with Parmesan salad that was not served with it. Deserts menu was handed, two people ordered cheese board. As you can tell not a great selection of cheeses and just a poor excuse for a cheese board. Said had Stilton and blue cheese this was not served with it, therefore they went back. Also ordered a hot chocolate and that came stone cold. That also went back. Cheese boards and hot chocolate were taken off the bill, as well as the side of chips as they never turned up. The restaurant was not busy so not really sure the excuse for the hiccups. Still had a service charge on of over £42.00 which I don’t think was right given all the above. Was a shame as large group of us and bill was not cheap six of us for £383.00 you expect better quality food. Like I said would not be back here in a hurry think you can pay cheaper and have a better meal else where.

It is a nice restaurant and nicely situated at the quay. You can sit inside or out. Some food (sandwiches) only available at certain times upstairs and other food only on certain times/days. I ordered soup for starter and frittata for main. They both came together. The soup was cold. They took it away and came back and told me it was hot since they had tasted it. Not sure what they wanted me to say. (I note in another review another customer also has complained of cold soup). The bowl was hot but not the soup. I assumed the chef had put the soup out but the staff never brought it to me until all the mains at the table were ready. Anyway I didn’t want cold soup so I got a dirty look from the waitress. The frittata was hot and ok. They added 12.5% on the bill which I couldn’t find mentioned on the menu.

Most disappointing evening meal. We visited this restaurant two years' ago and had a great evening, but not last night. The main issue was the delay waiting for our main meal and the disingenuous attitude towards us. We had to ask three times how much longer it would be for the mains to arrive. Each time it was 'just a few minutes'. Eventually after 45minutes they arrived. We were offered extra drinks as compensation, which frankly we didn't need, and interestingly our drinks charges were not reduced either. So, make sure you get an accurate estimate of the kitchen times before sitting down to avoid disappointment.

So disappointing, we were planning to start with a cocktail until we were told they are premixed in cans??? We ordered a bottle of Prosecco which was overpriced. I ordered from the set priced menu, the bruschetta was so cold and completed tasteless, no hint of garlic on the toast and no red onion. The chicken supreme was ok - just ok - the crème brûlée was good. My partner ordered from the main menu, duck parfait which he said was tasty, then bacon burger and chips - no garnish but was ok - just ok, tiramisu was ok, not the best but ok. The waiters need to smarten up, they looked untidy and unkempt. They made a mistake on the bill and tried to overcharge us, good job we checked! This used to be our favourite restaurant but it is a far cry from the standard of food they used to serve under the old management! Don’t think we’ll repeat the experience, it’s very expensive for what it is especially the wine - hugely overpriced.

We were dining in a group together with the best chief resto owner in Yorkshire. This is lovely on the quay however it’s Quite pricey but great place. Staff were lovely and attentive. But Soup served were cold, main meal were small portions and dry except the fish & chips which has a weird taste on it. Oh the take away bag was just wrapped in a foil without a plastic bag, felt disgusted with their excuses that they’re running out of bag. Anyway the dessert 🍨 were yummy but again served cold sticky toffee pudding? But served with chocolate cake with toffee pudding sauce, so bizarre how they’d twist our order. Service charge was 12.5% . We don’t mind. Partly because of the small cake with candle 🕯️thank you❤️ The bad things was they have a hidden charges. If we didn’t check the three main course meals, they would have been charged us individually. Again it was an honest lies/deceit. Just to be aware of. We won’t be coming back that’s for sure.

High expectations that fell super short. On arrival after ensuring we had booked the conservatory we got told the only table available was one right by the front door which was consistently in use due to people waiting for tables and to be seated. We were then told we could wait upstairs in the wine room for a table instead but we would have to check if it was open as it was closed for a private function earlier. We were provided a table in the conservatory which we were told was not available yet nobody had left the restaurant in this time. Beers were labelled at 660ml but we were provided with 330ml and told it was a typo on the menu. On ordering food we were asked to hurry due to the kitchen closing in half an hours time. No allergy requests were asked which my partner has a nut allergy. Whilst waiting for our starters the table behind us was provided with there starter in front of them which was wrong and sent back for it to then placed in front of ourselves. When questioned the managers response was she didn't touch it and deemed this as acceptable. On a fresh starter arriving of scallops and chorizo, I cannot complain about this as was amazing and very tasty. 2 burgers were ordered after much disappointment the ribeye on the bone for 2, shown on the online menu was no longer on it. We were asked how we would like our burgers cooked, either pink or well done. Both of us asked for pink. On delivery of our burger it was well done and when questioned once again, managers response was that's how our chefs cook it and some staff haven't been updated on this fact. On this fact we stated that a well done burger is not what we ordered she just walked away. Unable to finish the burger due to it being dry and lacking in moisture a pink burger would provide, although exceptionally hungry was just shrugged off. We were asked if we wanted dessert menus and when we said no was left for 15 minutes where 2 members of staff at different times removed vinegar and condiments, alongside empty drink bottles of the table with no interaction. On getting the attention of a waitress and asking for the bill it was clear there was no intentions of an apology. People around seemed to off been intently looked after and provided extras and seemed like these people were clearly regulars who are given more attention than others. This was noted by a few others who had entered the restaurant at the same time. We went here with the amazing reviews and what seemed to be good food but apart from the scallops starter the food was sub par for the price and attention to details, customer service and general attitude was down right appalling. It could of been an evening of clear disaster as celebrating a Christmas meal together as a limited time available alone but we were able to laugh it off but no compensation was given or even a apology for the situation. Disappointed, and let down. Will not return.

We visited this restaurant for a friends Christmas catch up. Party of 6. Our orders were requested prior to the booking via email. The requirement was intimated that it was a set 2 or three course lunch. Ranging to £38.50 for set three course. Upon various telephone calls to the restaurant, it was actually advised, we could, on the day, select from a very limited a la cart menu. 6 such pre orders were supplied. On the day, food, service were average. When we requested the bill, it didn’t add up correctly. 7 covers were charged, but, charged in a confusing way, as to purposely deceive us. The bill was contested at the time. We were advised, ‘the till doesn’t lie’. The bill was settled in full, despite awkward confrontation with staff. Upon leaving, and assessing the bill in depth, the ‘OVERCHARGING’ was established. We have emailed several times, called numerous times. Not one person within the staff can answer our questions!! So, I’m short, if you are prepared for sub standard food, poor service and would enjoy being overcharged the BISTRO ON THE QUAY in Ipswich is the place for you.

This had become a regular Saturday pre football match eating spot for us. Right on ipswich waterfront. Nice range of food. Well cooked, presented and tasty, reasonable prices too. We typically spend about £20-£25 per head for main meal, couple of drinks and shared dessert including a tip. We left a very positive review last year. However, been back a couple of times this season but sadly been disappointed. Two occasions - both Saturday lunchtime - the service was poor and the food service slower than previously experienced. The new staff appeared more interested in socialising amongst themselves than checking on customers). Maybe just a Saturday thing. Will try once more as we just so loved it at our earlier visits and the food is good. Interested to see how others feel. Hopefully just an off day for us.

This place has a lovely atmosphere and friendly service. However, the food was mediocre. The portions seemed quite mean - the hake dish had a small portion of fish, it was accompanied by crushed potatoes, samphire, sliced fennel and braised chicory. Most of the dish was potatoes, there was hardly any samphire, the chicory was nice and the fennel added a nice texture. It did seem, though, that they were bulking out with potatoes and cutting the more expensive ingredients down to tiny portions. I would rather pay a bit more and have a property balanced meal than fill up on potatoes. It was also not hot when it arrived.

A really nicely presented restaurant with friendly staff. Coeliacs need to beware of choosing from the “gluten free” menu though as it offered options to include chips. Luckily I double checked whether they were cooked in non contaminated oil. The waitress “thought” so but did check when I explained I needed to know for sure. She returned to say no - other items were cooked in the same oil. Could have made me very I’ll but not quite sure they understood or would be like to change their menu. We booked at this restaurant for dinner and there was 4 of us. We each had a main course follwed by dessert. Soon afterwards we all fell very ill! al of us with the same stomach cramps followed by lots of toilet visits.. 3 of us had to have the day off work the following day because we just could not get off the toilet. the only thing it could have been was the Mac N Cheese as we all had that with our main courses. I emailed the restauant the next day to explain and complain but they said after a thorough investigation they could not find fault in the kitchen and just sent me on my way completely disreguarding the fact that i had made a complaint. the food tasted good, couldnt deny that - and althought the stench of the cheese runs through the restaurant and is really off putting it did not stop us from enjoying the food at the time. I am just generally appalled at the way they have responded to us (both the manager Magdalena and also the Director Julien Jourdain) after explaining that we were all unwell after eating at this restaurant and I would have expected more from them. I will never go back here and nor will my friends and we have been left pretty disappointed by the experience.

I caught them outside using their mobiles and seemed to be going between the restaurant and the boat restaurant, so not sure if they're now owned by the se people but maybe they need more staff if they are. I've never felt the need to right a bad review but the front of house made me feel awful for asking anything and you don't pay good money to be treated like that. Visited last night, I had the lamb and my partner had the beetroot risotto. Both were cooked impeccably, service was great. Wine (Chardonnay) and pudding (sticky toffee pudding & a cheese board) were also fantastic. Couldn’t fault the place. It was the first time we’d been out for dinner in at least 18 months and will be coming back. Only downside is there was limited vegetarian options, but that’s to be expected with the cuisine. Special mention to the male waiter with the ponytail/bun, he said he’d only worked there a couple of weeks but you couldn’t tell. Great service.

We expected so much from the bistro having had amazing experiences at the mariner's and the wine boutique it was a real disappointment. We had gone in on a Tuesday and ordered drinks and their raclette burgers. The drinks came quite quickly but the food took thirty minutes and we couldn't flag down anyone to ask. When it did turn up we were told sorry there was a problem in the kitchen. Unfortunately the burgers did not live up to the long wait. The chunky chips were thrown haphazardly on the plate and each of us had varying portion sizes , the burger was served open and the top part of the bun had a very lonely lettuce leaf and no sauce or mayo or anything and looked quite sad and when we flipped the buns over all three were burnt two of them were so black they were inedible.... The other half of the burger had sweetcorn relish in a less than appealing shape and colour and was a bit lack lustre. The half we had and the chips tasted alright but nothing amazing. When asked how the food was we mentioned the buns and we were asked if we wanted new buns but we didn't want to wait as we had already waited so long. Unfortunately we didn't get time for desserts as we had something to get to and service had taken too long. At the end of the meal when the bill came there was no further apology or attempt to make what was unfortunately a disappointing meal better. Hopefully next time will live up to the standard of Julian's other establishments.

This is a wonderful restaurant owned and run by French chef who knows the business inside and out! Dishes have a French influence and are creative, delicious, and all freshly cooked. There is a set price menu as well as a la carte, good choices on both, selections can be made from both menus, which is a good idea. There is a very good wine and drinks list. Wine is available by the glass as well as in bottles. Upstairs, there is a wine boutique where wine and other drinks can be bought at shop prices to take away. Outdoor seating on the quayside available too. Service is very professional and friendly. We've been eating here for many years and have not been disappointed. Our only problem is that the Mariners Boat Restaurant is opposite Bistro which is a stunning and historical boat, kept beautifully and with authentic decor. The boat is also owned by M. Jourdain so expect the best in a unique setting. We alternate between the two restaurants. We can't recommend either venue highly enough. Nothing else in Ipswich comes close, and of course the location is very special. Thank you to all the staff for all our wonderful meals.

3 chefs, two waitresses and a ‘manager’.. 12 covers including ourselves were in there, and judging by the food going out, they had ordered before we got in… mackeral pate arrived promptly, but the two burgers took 3/4 of an hour to arrive, despite no...

Lovely quality produce. Highly recommended. Also had drinks and nibbles the day before, love the wine selection from small local farmers. Had lunch several weeks ago, also excellent. Love the tempura gherkins.

Went there for lunch. Greeted by a very surely young lady. Ordered drinks, G & T v poor, two ice cubes which melted in minutes and tonic was flat. Be Asked if we could have a drink outside and maybe eat outside. Went upstairs to use the ladies only to be greeted by a member of the kitchen staff holding a bag of frozen chips who was coming down the stairs. I waited for him to come down rather than squeeze past on the stairwell. . I didn’t get a thank you, a smile or anything and I thought how rude I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come!! Asked if we could have an umbrella up and was told it was to windy. The wind was very light. All the other Restaurants along the quay had umbrellas up so unsure what the problem was. They were quite rude. Due to their attitude we paid for our drinks and went to Issac’s and were greeted warmly. You could leArn a lesson from their approach. Restaurant was completely empty outside and 1 table occupied inside, with this attitude I’m not surprised!

Bistro on the Quay is always a favourite gem! We popped by for lunch and the service was friendly with big smiles and welcoming hellos. Seated on the busy terrace, we enjoyed the scenic views of the marina. Some of our group ordered a few items from the new brunch menu which were very tasty. We have to say the crab cake starters and the classic fish'N'chips were delicious. The staff were very attentive and we look forward to our next dining experience here.

We went last night for a big group meal and I left feeling disappointed. We were not made to feel welcome, and a very rude gentleman served us as if he didnt want us there. He delivered the wrong wine to the table, opened the prosecco and then when we mentioned it was normal rose not prosecco rose that we ordered, and he tried to argue with us saying we ordered the prosecco. Then proceeded to make a huge spectacle of checking that the bottles hadn't been drunk from whilst he carried them out. No water or wine was poured for us, simply plonked on the table which is fine for a pub but not a nice restaurant. We pre ordered food as we were a large group, and they weren't aware and asked for our order until we told them to check their email. When the mains came, a few of us had ordered sea bass, and were brought out Tuna steak. Apparently the other waiter was meant to mention that they didnt have any seabass! My main was delicious even though it wasnt what I ordered and I really enjoyed the food. And my dessert was divine. We also asked for more water for the table, and it didnt arrive until we asked again. None of the staff were attentive and we weren't made to feel welcome. Even though I thought the food was good the service was SO poor I won't be hurrying back. They were surprised we took the service charge off!!

We stopped for lunch as in Ipswich on business. Lovely find, love the extra touches, seemed like a super friendly family business where they want to exceed expectation. Good choice of food and really yummy. Loved the cucumber water too. Will def go back next time we are there!!

The food is excellent. Possibly the best fried slice I have had in ten years. Service was quick and friendly and tables outside work well. £9 for the lot is a great price too. I have been back twice since and experienced the same both times.
