Popped in for a light lunch. We usually share a meal due to being small eaters. We chose the soup with sandwich. The server was fantastic and this was the first time that a soup for one was split into two bowls. Still more than reasonable portions. The sandwich was freshly made and filled with the egg salad. The hot chocolate was nice too. Reasonable prices and extremely efficient, fast and friendly service. Will definitely be back. Open good hours too.

On a rare visit to Musselburgh on a Saturday morning we were pondering where to go for coffee. The lady in the wool shop recommended Brunton Cafe. The place was so busy we thought we were out of luck especially when asked had we booked. As luck had it there was a table for 2 free tucked in the corner. Excellent service, lovely cake and friendly helpful staff. We will return.

Enjoyed our visit to Brunton Bistro today for lunch. Given a warm welcome and seated quickly. The place is spotless, Every staff Member was so friendly, and food all looked delicious. Lunch was served promptly and with a smile. We ordered soup and a sandwich (salmon) , fish and chips followed by 2 ice creams. No complaints at all and will most definately be back soon, well done Brunton Bistro.

I felt the menu could have been much simpler ... my friend wasn’t keen on anything and ended up having just chips. ,she had visited previously and had bee happy with a different menu however I did have the salmon to start which I enjoyed followed by the beef burger , :::: gherkin 2 large slices ?? So much salad I had to strip it down to get to the burger really shouldn’t have had to pay extra for cheese , but again the burger was tasty.

Coffees are nice and good variety with ok prices. just nipped in for lunch and had baked potato with cheese. Lots of nice cheddar on soft potato with some crisp side salad. Only thing wrong was the seat was very uncomfortable. Hard with iron arms and too narrow for a well proportioned lady.

Ate here prior to us catching the film Peterloo. Verdict? Lovely staff, it does not stint on the size of the portions and the prices are very competitive. My Stornoway black pudding starter was delicious. My fish goujons were hot and crisp although a tad on the dry side but that's me nit picking. Other members of the party had crab and salmon fish cakes, a starter by the way but sufficient as a main and voted lovely. Others had the burger which was very good as was the stroganoff. If we plan to visit the Brunton again we'd certainly consider eating there. Can really recommend.

My mom, myself and little daughter had been to a Jo Jingles class across the road and thought it would be nice to pop into the Brunton Cafe for a little tea and scone as it’s across the road afterwards. Noone came over to us to take out order for over 10 mins despite catching a number of people’s eyes. Mom went up to the counter to order directly and was told by a (slow moving) lady with a very sour expression that it “was table service only” and then turned her back on my mom. Still no one came to take out order so we left and went elsewhere. Musselburgh has loads other lovely alternatives - I would go elsewhere!

My partner & I were seeing Leo Sayer at the Brunton ladt night & decided to eat at the Bistro. The menu had a few good choices & we both enjoyed what we ordered. Service very good & friendly but I thought the prices were a little steep. I did not realise that we could/should have had 2 courses or 3 courses for set price (would have saved a few pound) until I read it in the Brunton brochure afterwards. I do think one of the waitresses should have pointed that out.

The selection of lunchtime food is first class, the soups are certainly the star of the show, full of flavour and wholesome. They have freshly made to order sandwiches, panninis with an fantastic selection of fillings. For those wishing for something more substantial the menu includes a full selection of main meals. Visited at lunchtime during the school holidays with my wife and two kids (10 and 13). We took a table and our order was fairly quickly taken by one of the pleasant waiting staff. There's a selection on what you would expect from a small cafe, with lighter options such as sandwiches and soup, as well as baked potatoes and bigger traditional meals. I had lentil soup and ham salad sandwiches. The soup was grand, very thick and filling. I had a small bowl and I really would have struggled with a large one. Prices are reasonable and service was friendly.

Went for pre show meal and what a let down! I normally go for breakfast and it's always been great so I thought I would try the evening set menu. It was unexciting. The starters were below average and the mains were pretty disgusting.my daughter had chicken with risotto which when it arrived was boiled chicken and long grain rice with indescribable bits in it totally dry and bland.i had salmon there was no flavours at all!!!!! With charging restaurant prices I expected a decent fare! WRONG! We sent the mains back and was then presented with a bill by a surly head of staff with no apologies about our flavourless food we were charged full price for one set meal and a starter. I have always found the morning staff helpful and always attentive were customer service comes first and always with a smile shame it does extend to evening management!!!!! I will definitely NOT be eating here again .if you are looking to go to an evening show at the brunton then allow yourself plenty time and book somewhere else.

With our main lunch courses we ordered tea for two with our lunch. By the time I had finished my main course, no tea, so I approached the waitress and asked for out tea. Some time later, still no tea. When I asked at the counter to cancel the tea I was told, 'but it's here' - presumably growing cool. My mother's pensioner's fish and chips was tasty and appreciated. My baked potato was cool and the accompanying salad pretty meagre. The bistro has a friendly buzz but not helpful when you want to have a chat. It's a pity. Maybe staff need extra training.

We are regular customers here and usually really enjoy it, however we left this morning very disappointed. This morning was poor, took 30mins for breakfast to arrive, and when it did, the bacon was overcooked, the tomato was barely hot and the haggis and black pud greasy. It was as if the plates had been under a hot lamp. We were left waiting without our tea for half an hour seemingly forgotten about. There is plenty of competition out there for breakfast customers, particularly at the weekend and for £7, I expect better quality and service.

We were randomly out in Musselburgh so decided to pop in for afternoon tea (served between 2-4pm). The portion size of the afternoon tea is generous in comparison with what we have had at other places, plus you also receive a free tea refill! It is nicely presented to you on a cake tier stand too, although this is standard, it's still a nice touch!Between 2 we received a sandwich each, a scone each (with butter, cream and jam separate) and 3 small pieces of cake each. More than enough even for lunch! In fact, after the sandwiches and half a scone I was completely stuffed but they allow you to take away what you don't finish which was really nice! The decor being part of the old theatre is a bit dated but that doesn't detract too much from the food, although we did get a window seat which probably helped brighten things up! Overall, a very pleasant and good value afternoon tea for 2.

Was here Friday for lunch. The place is nice, the food is nice, the staff are nice. I only had soup and a coffee, which were both lovely, but they had ran out of the soup that I originally ordered so had to have the flavour I wasn't overly keen on. The food was served in reasonable time, by friendly waitresses, and piping hot. It was very busy when I arrived about 13:30 and hard to get a seat. I can't be bothered with places where you can't hear what the people at your table are saying, its too open, too busy and the way the walls are so open and maybe they proximity to other tables does not provide a great atmosphere for having a catch up lunch. The other thing is the cake selection is really poor/amateur for a place that seems to serve as lovely food as this does. Its a selection such as tray bake, rocky road and scones. Would be nice to see homemade victoria sponge, chocolate cake and the usual suspects, disappointing. Might go again, but might not.

Went in for a quick breakfast with my husband. The young girl who took our order was very nice but it went down hill from there. The food was delivered by two woman and the plates were placed on the table with not a word and they walked away. No "is there any thing else you need"? or "can i get you anything else"? As it turned out I was wanting butter and my husbands breakfast wasnt even correct. My husband ordered a vegetarian breakfast and on the menu it says sausages, potato scone, an egg, haggises, tomato, beans and 2 slices of toast. What the place was missing was 1 sausage, haggis and a slice of toast. No one came back to check on us to see if everything was okay. I would have expected better going to a sit down restaurant.Side note a blonde woman was wearing sandles. Isnt that against health and safety? Even if its not it still has the yuck factor. So if you want mediocre food with sub-standard service this is the place for you.

I visited the Bistro in Musselburgh on Friday the 24th of October for a light lunch with my husband. We entered the Bistro which was absolutely heaving and we were greeted with a young friendly smile who explained that they were very busy and she would do her best to get us a table immediately which she done, she led us to the table and gave us a menu each and told us the soup of the day and gave us a few minutes to decide what we'd like. She returned and took our order i asked if there were any gluten free options she gave me a big choice but I decided on a toastie and salad as we were just after something light my husband had fresh haddock and chips which he said was delicious (it looked it) and my toastie was very tasty for being gluten free! I couldn't fault out server one bit she even returned to see if we fancied a tasty treat and said she had gluten free biscuits which I could see on display. The only thing I would say is it really is ESSENTIAL when working in a restaurant that everyone has there hair tied back out there face when serving food, it looks so much more professional and hygienic. I think our server and a lady making drinks were the only people who had it tied back. This was the only thing that let the Bistro down.Overall a great experience, we will be back.

It's very popular with the pensioners of Musselburgh, but you can often walk in and be roundly ignored by the staff, who might be better served with a "Wait To Be Seated" notice. I am local and have used the bistro on many occasions, mostly for a cup of tea and cake, there are home made cakes on offer and they are baked locally and are generally good, yet not a great choice, as they are mixed with shop bought biscuits. However I ordered a black pudding roll, they stock are great brand name of black pudding, yet my black pudding for sure seemed that it had been fried in a deep fat fryer, my roll was dripping in grease, I called the waitress and showed her the roll, explained why I would not eat it. She assured me that it was cooked on the hot plate, I would not agree, the morning roll was a cheap white make, no decent bread rolls, but I did enjoy the pot of tea, Another visit was previous during the winter with my grand daughter, home made soup, which was meant to be lentil, it was very watery, lacked flavour and i do not think it had been on the stove long enough the soup again was served with cheap white bread slices, not very appetising. But in fairness I have not eaten a meal there, the place to me is just a little cafe, it could be a lot more after all it supports a theatre you would think the menu would be more creative, someone needs to get a hold of the owner or manager and put a spark into the menu.

Very warm welcome by the staff at the Bistro. The food is simple but very well done and in generous helpings. Ideally located in Central Musselburgh so handy for the harbour and obviously the theatre itself. I would recommend it for lunch although book in advance as it can get busy.

The Brunton Theatre itself is a good theatre venue in East Lothian which I have visited many times however for the first time decided to eat there before a show this weekend. Big mistake. The restaurant itself is divided in two halves. One half was doing a pre-theatre menu which seemed reasonably priced and may have been good as it was certainly busy. Unfortunately as we had not booked we were escorted to the other half of the restaurant by the young waiter whose badged indicated he was 'training'. Half way to our table he stopped and mentioned something about a pre-theatre menu then said there was broccoli and Stilton soup, fish and chicken escalope. I had to ask for a menu and we both decided to go for fish with a portion of bread and butter. Sadly he returned shortly after placing the order to inform us there was only one fish left. The reason then became clear why he had mention the soup, fish and chicken while standing in the middle of the restaurant was because that was the whole range available which if he had made this clearer earlier we would have gone elsewhere sadly though by this time we didn't have time. I decided to go for the chicken escalope. Other dinners came in after us and we're served soup and sandwiches which we were not offered. All of this could probably have been forgiven if the meal itself had been good. The fish was okay but not many chips. The first bite of the chicken was hot however the rest was stone cold and the few chips were all the bite size scrag ends. If we had more time and weren't so hungry we would have sent the chicken back. The bread and butter never arrived. I certainly won't be back for dinner. One thing they do well though and I will continue to go back for is the coffee and empire biscuits.

Went for a pre cinema meal on Friday night. It was the first time I'd tried the bisto and I'm afraid it'll be the last. I went for the fish from the very limited menu, to be told there was none left, as they had been 'busy', so opted for the angus burger, it was dry and hardly edible, Really should be able to supply decent quality when the menu to so small. Staff were freindly and surroundings nice enough, but the food was very poor. If this is the near the top end of what East Lothian can offer,, god help the rest.

nice enough place for a pre theatre drink, didn't try the food but the service was good and the prices for a theatre fairly reasonable.

Excellent lunch in the Bistro, highly attentive staff and terrific quality of food. The Cajun chicken was maybe not as spicy as I like but nevertheless excellent.

The Bistro is situated inside the Brunton Theatre in the heart of Musselburgh. The Bistro is lovely and clean and sells coffees, teas, scones and light meals throughout the day. Well worth a visit.

I eat here almost every week and the food is good. It's always busy which is a good sign. I think perhaps a variation in menu would b good though even just a change in the sandwich/toastie fillings. Its a nice place to eat though and staff r lovely.

I visited this restaurant again for some lunch with friends and former colleagues. We were not hurried at all by the friendly staff and were able to take our time perusing the menu and choosing what we would like to eat. Two of my friends chose large bowls of mushroom soup, which I must admit looked very appetising. I chose a smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich with a bit of salad, coleslaw and tortilla chips on the side. My other friend opted to have only a fruit scone with some tea. The other 3 of us chose green tea and we were given a jug of iced water as we had asked for a glass of water each. We spent ages over lunch, enjoying our food and the atmosphere. The staff are always attentive without being overbearing and the food is always freshly prepared when you order a sandwich. They also have a wonderful selection of cakes and scones to choose from if you have a sweet tooth.

My friends and I (party of four), went to a show at the Brunton Theatre and had pre booked at the bistro to have a pre theatre meal. The service was speedy and excellent - service with a smile and the food was delicious! We also had a nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (between 2).I also liked the "bistro atmosphere", very pleasant. We are going to another show in October and will definately be booking to eat there again and also, everything must be timed so that you are in your seat for the show in plenty of time which we all liked.

My mother and I went three time during our holiday prior to see a show. We eat off the set menu and my mother who is a vegetarian was very impressed. The service was great and the staff were very accommodating when we asked if my mother could have something different as there was only 1 vegetarian choice and staff were very obliging and she had a wonderful Mushroom stroganoff. A very reasonable three course meal pre-theatre meal. Would recommend for everyone to try it whether going to a show or not.

We went as a family of 6 to see a show. We stood in a queue at the till to place our order, but for some reason when it got to our turn the woman said "its table service". I explained we had stood there to be served just like the people in front who had been served. We did sit down she then proceeded to clean tables and wash several down before even attempting to take the order. I don't think I would bother going back as the tea was cold and the homemade cake tasteless.

Usually dine there when visiting the Theatre. The food is to a good standard and the bistro is very clean and a nice place to have a meal. We always prebook a table and have found it useful. Although on our last visit we took the pre theatre menu at £9.95 for a main meal. If honest, the meal wasn't worth it. The staff are lovely and attentive and the theatre itself is great, just a bit disappointing on the price hike. Will we return again? maybe, might be time for a change.

I came to the cafe with my mum and friends. We had to wait about ten minutes for a table as they were so busy however it was worth the wait as we all fully enjoyed our lunch. the waitress said the next time we should reserve a table for next time. I had the fish and chips which I could not fault.

What a lovely afternoon ~ it was my daughters 21st birthday and also my mums birthday, I invited 8 friends to join us for "afternoon tea" .... we did have a cuppa but also induldged with a few bottles of Prosecco which was chilled to perfection. I am quite an expert on afternoon tea, and must say the Brunton has got to be up there with the city centre ones, at a quarter of the price. Quite simply the Brunton Bistro does what they say ~ all items are made fresh to order (so NO hard pre-prepared sandwiches with curly corners) the mini freshly baked scones were yumm and the homemade fresh cream meringue was dee-lish. The staff attentive to our every need from the initial enquiry to lighting the birthday candles to wrapping-up the extra goodies that were left over. I'd would reserve for afternoon tea again, not just for a special occasion but for any afternoon !

Prior to a visit to the theatre we had a 3 course dinner at the Bistro at the Brunton, our meal was superb! This is a busy restaurant, with a really friendly feel, excellent service & quality, fresh food, cooked to perfection. The wine that is available is also very good. It offers great value for money and is really worth a visit, whether it is for breakfast, coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, or an evening meal - I have no doubt we will be back.

It is some time since we visited the Bistro. What an improvement. We enjoyed an excellent 3 course menu at £16.95 when not only the food but the service too, was superb. Wonderful value for money and the Viennese Gala which followed made it a memorable evening. We will not stay away so long again!

Found this hidden gem when making enquires about future performances in the Brunton. If I am being honest that more to kill time when passing through the town than anything else.Dropped in for what was intended to be coffee and a sandwich, ended up having two courses and a glass of wine. What a lovely establishment, staff were first rate, as was the food, overall fantastic value for money. Portions were huge and very well presented, hardest part was deciding and saying no to a sweet.I will be back.Just shows

First visit , the place was quiet, nice welcome, the lunch menu seemed a bit limited. The food was very good Any disappointment regarding the menu was more than compensated for by the excellent service which was friendly and professional. Thank you for a pleasant lunch

Lovely quiet restaurant with quick & efficiency service. Fantastic service from Jill who tried to help me generate the Blue light code required for the 25% discount. Most frustrating.

Lovely food and scones were a treat. It was a bit of a squeeze as one of our party was in a wheelchair but the staff were very helpful moving tables around to make room.

Pretty disappointing dinner here. Came and ordered two steak baguettes, each costing almost £20. They came covered in a caremelised onion chutney and so much melted cheese and yet, were still so bland. Bad bread, bad steak, bad cheese. It came with a watery chimichurri sauce for dipping, which didn't really feel thought through with the rest of the dish. Won't be back.

Fantastic food. The venison loin was delicious. Friendly, efficient service too. Great bar as well with a good whisky selection. Highly recommended!
