Bistro 8 in Caerphilly

Home to the famous garlic bread loaf although I think it should be renamed EPIC garlic loaf as its just that! As you can see, it's an absolute beast but when shared between 4 hungry people it didn't last very long. We thoroughly enjoyed all the food and the burgers were top notch. Definitely worth the 30 minute drive from Cardiff! I booked in advance as we brought our dog. Theh have a small area that is dog friendly so it's worth booking ahead. Excellent service.

Had tapas lunch, was ok. Service was good - nice staff and food quick to arrive. Onion ring wouldn’t have again, they were dripping wet with oil. The chicken and belly fat was ok but wouldn’t have halloumi dippers again. Prices are good and plenty of parking.

Had a fabulous meal here for Mother’s Day Lunch! Great service and delicious food. We’ll definitely be back.

We had our wedding meal here after our ceremony. Tom let us come up early to decorate for the guests! Great service and great food! The conservatory is great for having those type of gatherings in, it just made our day perfect. We can’t wait to come back 🙌🙌

We had the pleasure of visiting this charming and traditionally old restaurant for the first time, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The food was absolutely delicious—every dish was prepared to perfection, and we thoroughly enjoyed every bite. A special thank you to our young waitress, Harriet, whose professional and attentive service made our visit even more enjoyable. We will cherish the fondest memories of this evening and this lovely place. Without a doubt, we highly recommend a visit!

Was disappointed with the food. It was average at beat and no garlic loaf on a Saturday night was very disappointing. Won't rush back

Cosy food lovely but the chairs were a bit wobbly could do with some new ones. Staff were fab I would give a 5 otherwise. The lamb burgers were nice 😋

Sunday lunch was ok. but didn't appreciate the chipped plate I had my meal served on.

A hidden gem. Food was outstanding, perfectly cooked and presented. My steak and ale pie had humongous pieces of steak that melted in your mouth. Served with fork tender carrots and broccoli, proper chunky chips and a very flavoursome gravy. My partner had the Korean chicken burger that was served with a delicious Asian coleslaw and fries. The chicken breast was huge, moist and covered in sticky Asian sauce. Delicious. The only thing that let it down was service. Two waitresses were working but only one seemed to be serving tables. The other avoided eye contact and seemed to find it a pain to clear our table. When asked for the bill, she placed the receipt on the table and almost ran away before we could ask for the card machine. We waited a further 10 minutes before giving up and paying at the till.

Lovely atmosphere, great food especially Sunday roast

We were invited here for a family get together, my food was "OK" but in my opinion like the soft drinks it was overpriced, others in the group had problems with missing items, under/overcooked steaks and food barely warm, issues were mentioned to staff but never resolved, drove an hour to get to the venue and was looking forward to the meal, sadly I wouldn't drive 10 minutes to visit again, as I said my food was "OK" nothing special, more like pub grub than restaurant quality food, but who gets lasagne and chips wrong.

If I could give the place a 0 I would.. we drove half hour for a booking that clearly stated on the notes that we had a pram attending.. they seated us upstairs with no way to get up.. they then tried to seat us downstairs with no room for the pram next to the table and the lady said we could put the baby “behind us” - also next to a turned on radiator. Staff were massively rude, clearly notes are ignored and I would say this restaurant is definitely not child friendly. First time trying this restaurant after so many good reviews but huge regret now. Wouldn’t recommend in the slightest if you have a pram or children.

First time here. Lovely venue, but it was expensive, £42 for two mains and two soft drinks, the food was good, the chips were REALLY good! Table was booked for 7pm, was informed at booking we had table until 8.45pm. I don't like that aspect of booking. We were informed at 9pm that they were closing soon. I had hoped to sit in the bar and continue catching up with my friend but as we walked down stairs the staff said goodnight, so we took the hint and left.

Over priced for what we had. Not all meals were hot, some warm & 1 even cold. Child's meal incomplete. No onion rings with one meal even though they were supposed to be included. When mentioned to the server, she said oh ok but they never received them. The famous garlic bread was so hard on the outside we had trouble cutting it, once cut the inside was still not cooked properly. Overall not impressed.

The place looks promising, but as soon as we received our food, it was downhill from there. The food was dry, cold, and overpriced. A massive disappointment. And I think you know we did complain about multiple dishes, but instead of fixing things, you point fingers and lie. Well-done.

Visited here over Christmas for the first time. Slow service probably around 40 minutes waiting for food. Had the burger which was over cooked and dry, they didn't ask how you would like it cooked so I was expecting it to be over cooked. Wife had the pasta sauce dish which had hardly any pasta in it. Would I visit again? Maybe if I'm in the area. Galic loaf bread was really nice though.

Early Xmas gavering of friends and family. What a lovely welcome we received from the staff on our arrival. I Always look for a warm greeting when going into an establishment for the first time and to be made welcome costs nothing but is appreciated by customers like myself. Now the experience rating. Venue very easy to find with own car park and beer garden attached. Small walk to the Bistro, with both steps and a wheelchair excessable ramp with handrails so absolutely no problem with entry. We were downstairs due to my mother's mobility, but there's a 1st floor dinning area if you prefer a little more privacy. Two menus to choose from, one you could class as a standard pub menu the other offers more choice. Our food was delivered fairly quick, main meals and deserts and very enjoyable, nobody left anything. This is unusual being a party of six people Very good selection of drinks on hand and non alcoholic for our driver for the day. I must say the two young ladies serving us Meg & Trigan were both excellent. Could not do enough for us. So I must say superb afternoon all round. P. S. If you Would like to try this venue I would strongly suggest booking in advance due to the Xmas party dates aleady taken. Thanks for reading. Andy Robins.

Booked here for Sunday lunch. Potion sizes were good and food was tasty. I had the vegan vegetable seeded roast, which was nice but the roasties were the best bit for me. My husband had the lamb, which he enjoyed but said it wasn't a lot and expected it not to be slices as the menu said leg of lamb. We also had dessert which were both good. Highly recommend the pistachio and almond torte. Food came out very quickly, some of the servers could have been friendlier they seem a little fed up? But others were fab and friendly, I didn't get any names unfortunately. Another thing to note is they have customer parking but it was very busy we nearly had to find somewhere else to park but luckily a space became available. Overall a nice experience with good food and will come back to try the regular menu.

nice place, great service, so-so food for us Italians but acceptable Update after a month we are back. terrible service they put us in an absurd rush at 9pm when the place was supposed to close at 10pm, they even took away the dishes we were still eating and then charged a wastage surcharge outside of any criterion. young girls left to manage the place badly. Very low quality food, a paella that looked like a rice smoothie... low level discount cold cuts, in short, an experience to forget, as one of my colleagues said "see u never". Since the veracity of the review is questioned, I attach a highlighted item on the receipt.

We really enjoyed the calamari, the garlic cheese loaf, and the Biscoff cheesecake. The service could have been better, but it was a lovely restaurant overall.

A disappointing visit. The positives - the food was lovely and portion size generous. The negatives - We had booked a table with room for a pram 3 weeks in advance and upon arrival were told we were seated upstairs and would have to carry the pram up which is far from ideal. I questioned whether they could see the request on the booking to which the waitress said yes but if I had turned up to my booking on time then I might have had a table downstairs. Please note, I was 8 minutes late due to there being a rugby event on and the car park completely full so we had to park quite far away and walk down. I informed the waitress that I had indeed tried to call as well to notify them we were a few minutes behind but there was no answer to which she ignored. Worth noting, my other family members had already been seated before us on time and therefore us being late was irrelevant. Apparently a male staff member offered to carry the pram up for them even though they did not have one. We were not offered the same. When food arrived, there was a large female hair on the food covered in gravy. I had already plated other times on at this point and sent the plate back which the waitress happily changed but did not replace the vegetables until I asked. We ordered dessert which one item came with plastic wrapping still on the plate (the carrot cake). It took around 45 minutes after we finished our mains to be offered a dessert menu and upon ordering our desserts we were informed we had to return the table in ten minutes which made us feel rushed when the service was a little slow. There was no discount offered , no apologies, no resolutions with the pram and seating issue. The staff were all very young and did not offer great customer service so this does taint the experience. A shame as the food was enjoyable but I would not visit again due to the few issues encountered.

First class food polite staff, definitely recommend. Would like to see, a different choice of starters, of a group of 12 people, only 3 took starters. (which were garlic mushrooms, and calamari) Maybe good old pate could be added

First time here and it definitely won’t be the last, I didn’t view reviews before I went , an was pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes , well worth the money presented beautifully an service was with a smile , so glad we chose your restaurant today 😁

First time at Bistro 8 recently after hearing good things. I wish I could give more stars but just feel that with a few minor improvements this place could be so good. Food was okay, but not great. Croquettes arrived burnt on the bottom and were dry, but had the gravy to help. The dish I wanted wasn’t available so chose a burger which was nice but not anything special. The staff working on the night I visited were all very young and clearly trying their best, but it was evident that they needed further training as plates were slammed down in front of us, arms suddenly appeared across us mid food to grab glasses and we were immediately asked did we want the bill after finishing our dessert. The waitress was very sweet and I need to emphasise that I don’t think any of this is her fault, just down to a lack of appropriate training. Probably wouldn’t visit again but that’s probably more personal preference than anything.

We have visited for the first time tonight and we thoroughly enjoyed. The restaurant gives such a relaxed vibe ,with quiet music in the background with a kind of cottage feel about it . The food was absaloulty delicious , we celebrated in style and had starter, main and then a cheeky dessert. Everything was presented and cooked perfectly. The girls who where serving where brilliant , we had a little spillage and within seconds of asking they where there wiping it up. We didn't wait long for our drinks or our food - which came out absaloutly piping hot that's always a bonus. We traveled about 45 minutes to try this pub as I seen it advertised on a social media platform and would 100% reccomend. It's a 10/10 off us . Thank you Bistro8

First time visit. Seated and served promptly with drinks and meals. Had a small issue with my latte which was resolved very quickly. Our meals were beautifully cooked and certainly didn’t disappoint. Absolutely will return.

Visited Bistro 8 today (Sunday) for a family lunch. The roast was really excellent and a very generous portion. Hallie looked after us really well, many thanks to her & all the staff. Highly recommended, 5 stars 👍

The steak was well cooked having asked for it well done. However, we didn't want desert and fancied an Irish Coffee. The answer, "Sorry, we don't do them" Really!

Poor service, food nothing special. Quite pricey

Mediocre food for such high prices.. complained as the food was inedible the chicken was so dry and the cake was so hard I thought it was still frozen .. got told ‘that’s how it’s meant to be’ really? expected them to take it off the bill but instead they argued with me about it.. never had that happen before from a ‘credible’ restaurant. Very bad attitude they obviously don’t care about their customers. Overall Wont be back there are far better places.

Bit of a disappointing experience trying bistro 8. The interior was lovely and it smelt great inside. It took quite a long time to be served but I appreciate the restaurant was busy. I had 3 tapas dishes - Korean pork belly bites, Brie and mango parcels and calamari, my partner had the vegan burger. His burger was a bit middle of the road and the chips portion size was on the small side but my food really wasn’t good. The calamari portion size was tiny and overcooked so it was both crunchy in places and very rubbery. The parcels were ok but quite greasy but the pork belly was pretty gross - I know belly is a fatty meat but the fat hadn’t been rendered down or crisped up at all so more than half of each piece was completely inedible flabby fat (I’m also not sure what was Korean about it other than the sesame seeds - it was just bbq). When asked how the food was, I explained the problem with the pork belly and was offered an alternative but we were going to the cinema after and didn’t have time to wait. They did then offer to take the pork belly off the bill. I didn’t complain about the calamari because I had eaten it all (hoping that it wouldn’t all be as bad as the first bite) but I do wish I’d said something now because that dish really wasn’t good either and at nearly £9, it was a bit of a shocker. Having said this, I couldn’t fault the service other than the wait for our food, every member of staff we dealt with was lovely and very attentive despite the busyness of the restaurant.

Beautiful restaurant serving tapas, modern British food. Food servings were very generous - especially their famous garlic & cheese loaf! A literal loaf of luscious garlic and oozy cheese that would easily serve 4+ people. Lovely setting and modern cozy interior. Highly recommend.

Ordered a medium rare ribeye steak at £29 come to the table well done hardly any chips and half a tomato..... Sent it back.... If I'm ordering food at these prices I at least expect the chef to to follow my order..... Having had two previous mediocre meals I the past we thought wed give it another try. That will be the last time we eat at this restaurant. Simply not worth the money . Very very disappointed. Having being unable to respond to your reply, I will say this. The second streak that come back to the table was literally flash cooked on both sides , the middle was raw!! I certainly didn't ask for a blue steak, it was Definitely not medium rare!, and I can assure you I absolutely did not enjoy it! Out of politeness I didn't want to make a fuss again. When you are paying miller and carter prices which by the way is well within my budget, I at least expect the chef to follow what 'me' the customer asks for. The presentation was awful a couple of dry chips and half of a tomato. So my one star review is definitely reflective of the experience I had. I Definitely will never come back to Bistro 8, based on that you can't seem to follow simple cooking instructions. Best regards. Word of mouth goes along way, you won't be getting praise from me and I certainly won't recommend you to anyone....so anyone reading this don't waste your money!!!

Honest review. The food tasted ok nothing special. And I could stomach the premium prices if the portion was bigger very small burger and not many chips the taste of the food was fine but for the money very small portion. And slow getting the food out to u aswell

The pub itself is lovely, however myself & my friend found it overpriced for what it was. Staff were lovely etc. I would however return to use the bar, the cocktails were great. *edit - in response to the owners sarcastic reply, I’m not on a budget, and even if I was - it doesn’t justify the price & portion size!.. and I most certainly would not return now after that comment! Rude.

Called bistro 8 this evening to see if someone could bring me out a drink to the river terrace after a lovely dog walk I was told no, and hung up on! Which was fine after going over the road with my dogs to see an empty bar with four people sat in and asked the question why couldn’t you wait on me I was then told, I’m not really sure. I asked for one drink! dread to think if I booked a table for four people to dine.

Lunchtime burger was the best burger I have ever tasted! Served with fresh coleslaw and triple cooked fries! Yum. We will be back alot! Thank you Chef Xx

We called in when viewing houses on the off chance and had a great lunch meal. Good service , great lunch menu. We were looked after by the staff. And we'll go back for lunch.

My eyes were watering a little 😅 It was just so flavorsome though, the chicken and leek pie was lovely too. Very rich luscious gravy and the mash was very tasty too, nicely seasoned. Dessert wise, the chocolate fudge cake was great but it was all about the biscoff cheesecake. This was amazing! Needless to say I highly recommend you pay this place a visit ASAP! 👌

We visited today food did not disappoint started with creamy garlic mushrooms on sourdough bread then had the trio of meats dinner which were pork ,beef and turkey with seasonal veg fluffy roasties and Yorkshire pudding amazing food will definitely be back again

Beautiful restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and delicious food! The only reason for 3 stars is unfortunately this was my first time at Bistro 8 and really wanted to try certain foods from the menu only to be told that they had ran out of most of it.

Great food, great music (& you can actually hear it to enjoy it too. They play plenty of Pink Floyd👍), great staff with great, friendly service, great place. Price is a little higher than the likes of your usual Sunday roast venues & other other dishes, but it is a little more special too. Great drinks offered (pitty I was driving & couldn't enjoy any😠). If I had to mark them down for anything, I would say it's the fact dogs are allowed down stairs, but some would find that a positive. The only other thing (which was good in a way too) was that we had 2 from the party who didn't come as they couldn't seat all of us down stairs due to disability, but when we arrived, only then they told us they could accommodate all of us down stairs. The disabled 2 had not turned up then cause as far as we were all concerned, they couldn't accommodate us down stairs. But all in all, the place is great & will definitely return & recommend to everyone 😉👍

I was here when on business with a supplier nearby. "A hidden gem" is how I'd describe it. Attentive staff, a nice place with very good food as well. I had the lamb rump for my main which was excellent. Certainly a place I would use if I lived locally.

Disappointing evening. The food was poor and over priced and the service was very slow. However the waitress dealt with our complaint promptly and professionally but overall a disappointing night out. We won't be rushing back.

Went for lunch only one person serving so had a bit wait to be seen as she was busy upstairs but she was very polite and helpful food as always was spot on the only negative we found was the house slaw which looked like tescos own coleslaw that they charge you a fiver for doesn't put us from calling again just won't have the house slaw

Visited Bistro 8 today for Sunday lunch for a party of 5. The Roasts arrived with trimmings and the vegetables were served separately the dish inwhichthey were served was the size of a small bowl which contained enough for two portions in consisted of swede mash, broccoli and peas no extra gravy we assumed more was to follow! Unfortunately this wasn't the case. We asked for more as it clearly wasn't enough for everyone, we had to repeat the request before an even smaller dish was brought out with only broccoli and peas we had all but finished our meals . Really disappointing experience as the meat and trimmings were lovely as were the vegetable just would have been nice to have had them together. Did Express our disappointment to the waitress who replied Mmh !!!

Food was good staff were good however the lack of anything in the decor to absorb sound was a disappointment only us in and very difficult to hear what was being said. Buy a good carpet or some think curtains. It's a real shame style over substance. It should have been a 5 but sorry not for me

We went here for new years eve table of 4 was looking forward to cheesy garlic loaf sold out so wnt for katsu chicken curry should of came with vegetables but instead had raw sliced chilli peppers the chicken wax frozen breaded chicken strips with a not very much flavour curry sauce which I'm sure was packet not very happy to say the least my daughter asked for hunters chicken it should of had cheese on top but no it was just covered with way to much bbq sauce my son had chicken and chorizo gnocchi which was very dry and stuck together on the other hand my partners gammon was ok very disappointed with it being new years eve and for how much it cost there when I told the girl she replied really and walked away 😀

Was quite disappointed. The service was very slow and had to remind the staff about various orders a couple of times. It is very overpriced for what is essentially quite average pub food. It has a nice interior but unfortunately I won’t be returning and wouldn’t recommend.

We weren't overly impressed with this place, it was nice but far too expensive for what it is. The reviews are mixed and they're justified. We had soup & calamari to start, the calamari is £8.95 and it was literally 7 pieces with a bunch of rocket underneath & a sauce. Although it was nice, it wasn't worth the money. We had the duck & hunters chicken and they were lovely but luke warm. We didn't complain as the table of 8 next to us had already sent 3 meals back for being undercooked and contaminated with hairs. The waitresses were lovely and seemed swamped but were attentive. Maybe we shouldn't judge based on one seating but I don't think we'd return. £101 for 4 drinks, 2 starters 2 mains and a side for anyone needing a price guidance

No atmosphere on ground floor, I’ve been in nicer pubs, yet was still charged restaurant prices !!

My first time at bistro 8 Was seated at a table with huge pieces of peeling paint coming off it. Ordered the turkey roast off the festive menu. Tho I had a good amount of turkey, the mash was very dry and tasted like smash. And the stuffing was the size of a school eraser and just as hard. Sorry i won't be in a rush to return.

Called on the day to book a table and was accommodated. On arrival we had dog treats ready for our whippet and a heater on which she coseyed up to. Food and staff were great festive menu was lovely. Dog menu available to. Best thing about this place is that they are dog friendly (downstairs) only. Thank you.

Really lovely place! Welcoming staff, lovely food, big portions and a great pint! We had an emergency just as our mains arrived, no problem for the staff…they wrapped our plates and said for us to keep them! We went back two days later for another meal, took the plates back and enjoyed another lovely feed up! We will be returning! Try the garlic & cheese topped loaf!!

Read so many rave reviews about Bistro 8. Sadly came from there very underwhelmed. I had the festive plater and my wife the festive chicken burger both meals arrived luke warm. Both chicken and beef burgers were dry and barely warm also side dish of onion rings were left uneaten as they were so greasy they were disgusting. At no point did a waitress ask if the meals were ok as we would have complained. Sadly left there disappointed with the eating experience.

Despite arriving at 7pm and there being only one other table occupied our burger and chips took over 45 mins to arrive. The food was ok but I feel very overpriced for what you actually get. The setting and decor were very nice but didn't make up for the poor service and overpriced food.

It's a nice restaurant, pity the service is not up to the mark, a Tuesday evening, not busy, arrived at 6:50 ordered two festive burgers and waited 45 minutes for food ... burger was ok but a bit overpriced

Food and service was brilliant food was a bit ate but the staff couldn't apologise enough and we were offered free drinks and nibbles why we waited ...had a fab night

Food and service were excellent. However, a little off-putting was the alarming belch coming from the kitchen! Luckily the food didn't have the same effect on us!

Sunday lunch for 5 people, downstairs was cold, food was lovely and service was fine .

Really nice, went for Sunday dinner and the food was perfect, as was the service! Definitely visiting again and highly recommend!

Totally fabulous from booking to dining to service!! Top notch restaurant at superb value for money cost! All you can ask and more!!
