I'm a regular at Loteria but my mum had yet to try the new menu so we went up one Sunday afternoon. Neither of us were disappointed. We shared the prawns pil pil to start and this was better than the same dish I had on holiday this year in Spain. It was lucky there was an even amount of prawns as we would have been battling for them! For mains we shared ribs, half a chicken, sweet potato fries and rice. The meat feel off the bone of the ribs and was divine. I always think I'll regret ordering chicken at a restaurant but not at Loteria, the meat was so tasty. The sweet potato fries with garlic aioli were the best I've had and so moreish it was hard to stop eating once full! Service as attentive and welcoming as ever... can't wait to go back for the NYE party!

This used to be called Birdcage and served chicken only. It has now been rebranded and serves typical bistro food with a South American twist. We had burgers, ribs and pinchos along with fries and a couple of bottles of wine. Good selection of food and wine at reasonable prices. Eclectic clientele which adds to the fun of the place. Service is warm and friendly.

The last time I came here for dinner the food and service were both great. However, I went last night with a few friends and the food and service were good up until we got our desserts. We had ordered 5 but only 3 came, the 3 of us had finished/stopped eating by the time our waiter asked us if we were waiting on desserts, then he said the kitchen had made 1 chocolate cake instead of 3 and they were coming. There was no apology, they waited 20 minutes after we received ours to get theirs. I got the creme brûlée, it was cold inside, a chewy jelly consistency and a brown liquid filled up my dish once I broke into it. It wasn't creamy at all inside, and tasted horrible. The chocolate cakes were nice but some weren't actually warm and the two late ones didn't have any garnish. When our waiter cleared the plates, he didn't ask how are desserts were; I had only taken a few spoonfuls of the creme brûlée, something you would normally question. When the bill came nothing had been deducted, we were expecting a complimentary 10% for forgetting 2 of the desserts, especially since they charge £6.95 each for them...

First time here yesterday and we were pleasantly surprised and really impressed! I want to go back already. We had the pinchos (chicken skewers) which came on great toasted bread with two different sauces. Generous portion. The hand cut chips were really good and crispy and the garlic mayo was delicious. It must be made on the premises as it's not like anything I've had before. Completely clean plates. Excellent Merlot by the glass too. Heard nothing but good things from all the tables nearby too. The atmosphere here is also great, nice decor and lighting and the staff were all really friendly without being disingenuous or overbearing. It's definitely a bit different from everywhere else and the food didn't let it down at all. i want to go back for the prawns pil pil or the half a roast chicken! They also have tacos, burgers, lamb chop, steak...all looks very good!

We called in for brunch early on a Sunday afternoon. The place has a lovely atmosphere and a fun menu. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The only gripe is that the food took absolutely ages to arrive. The restaurant wasn't even close to being half full but it still took well over half an hour for our food to arrive, by which time we were both getting hangry.I'd be happy to go back in the hope that there was just a one off issue with getting the orders out that day.

They were a flavour explosion, with sprouted coriander and clearly assembled with care - they looked inviting and tasted great. They were only £6.95. If I'd had time, the desserts looked imaginative. The building here is still called "The Birdcage" but the restaurant arms to have rebranded as Loteria. It's a Mexican type menu, high calorie, loads of melted cheese and rich sauce. Prawn piri piri starter was small though tasty. Veggie burger was presented as a meal in itself but would really have needed a side - it was ok but not very memorable. With coffee and a large diet Coke the bill was £20. About right. There are better restaurants in the area but this is worth a visit. T

Somewhat jaded of "fine dining", and rapidly reaching the stage where only a good Burger will do, we were directed to this cool and characterful establishment situated close to the University on Belfast's Stranmillis Road.We knew from the outset that this would be good. Staff were warm and welcoming, informal yet informed. We were quickly seated, and from a compact wine list chose a well priced NZ Sauvignon Blanc. The Burgers were exceptional...both chicken and beef, beautifully accompanied by zingy avocado and great salsas, and perfectly cooked. This is a restaurant that knows exactly what it is doing. It is confident, charming, and treats its food and customers with equal respect. We were absolutely impressed, and we will certainly be returning.

Locale ben arredato e pulito. The food is amazing here! The starters are massive and the food is reasonably priced. The beer is a little pricy but to be expected. We had the veggie nachos and buffalo chicken wings to start and both tasted great. The nachos were on a huge plate and the wings had a really tasty sauce on them. It was all presented beautifully and we were served really quickly. My partner had the ribs for a main and I had the chicken skewers, we ordered 2 sides however the amount of food we got you could get a side of fries to share. The staff were friendly and explained extras that were available. Great cocktail list too and some interesting wall art. One of my favourite restaurants in Belfast. It has a youthful bohemian character, with great music that plays low in the background. The staff are some of the most friendly around and can't do enough for you while you're there. The new menu is really delicious. My favourite is the lime and chilli chicken but they also do really tasty buffalo chicken wings. Their nachos are a great sharing starter and are hand made in house. There's also great salad options too and it's really easy to eat carb free here. Overall I rate this place five stars in terms of decor, service and food. I always recommend it to friends!

I booked Loteria (Birdcage) for a party of four for a pre Pride quiz meal and sociable drink. Lydia who took the booking was friendly and professional and set the scene for what was to be a wonderful evening. Being a creature of habit I was a little nervous at their revamped menus. Those nerves quickly vanished as we walked to our table and I saw and smelt what everyone else was eating. The menu was definitely more Latino / South American inspired (but with a few of the old favourites such as chicken burger – which was perfect for my friend who is a fussy eater), and certainly fills a gap in the Belfast restaurant scene. Our order was taken by an extremely attentive Latino waiter with lots of cool tattoos – friendly and charming, he took our drinks order and came back for the food order. I had the King Prawns Pil Pil which were cooked to perfection firm and crispy and came with bread and oils. My friend had the chicken burger which he remarked was absolutely fabulous. The other two friends had the steak (medium rare) and the ribs (again both cooked to perfection) with sides of chips and sweet potato fries. The food was magnificent, served promptly and very reasonably priced. I haven’t eaten such tasty food in a long while. The food is not the only thing that makes Loteria stand out from the crowd. It is all those other small things that this place has got so right. The staff played a huge part in my dining experience. From taking the initial reservation to taking our order, cooking the food and discretely making sure everything was to our liking the entire evening – Loteria hit the nail on the head. Their friendly can do attitude certainly added to the atmosphere and laughter of the place.Loteria – thank you for a wonderful night. I’ll be back for my Latino fix very soon !

Just had lunch here today and it was so good I vowed I would put on a review. We had 2 adults, 2 children, a baby and a dog. We sat outside and it was quite a warm day, first thing they did was bring a bowl of water for our dog. Well, we were seriously impressed!! How thoughtful! The waiter was very friendly Italian guy and then a lovely friendly local girl. Both efficient, chatty and kind. They recommended these lovely 'mocktail' type drinks which come in jars. When someone mentioned cocktails I was craving a mohito but I was driving. Poor me... No, they brought a non alcohol mohito!! Gorgeous! We had a mix of Qesadillas and burgers. There's a good choice of South American style food but not so far out that it would scare the horses, conservative diners will find something they like. The staff were good about my kids wanting this and that removed from their order as written on the menu. Nothing was a pain to the staff who patiently noted the special requests. There was a little mix up with one of the orders, no problem at all, all was sorted out quickly and with graciousness and a smile. I would definitely return. Staff make a place. I've been to places where the food is great but the staff have been surly and it creates a miserable experience. Here, the food is grand and the staff are so upbeat and helpful. It makes all the difference.

Food is delicious in Birdcage and the drinks selection is always excellent for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Some good vegetarian options and a really good selection of side dishes. A good restaurant layout for sharing.I love the people who work in the restaurant, the overall artistic vibe and the musical playlist of the restaurant; however, on a negative note, the music was very loud and it was difficult to hold conversation with music being played at such a volume. Not your typical birdcage, but a birdcage indeed, full of eligible bachelorettes. I digress, dear reader! I called in for a swift half one tempestuous evening, having broken up with my partner of 17 months, and was pleasantly surprised by the wit and conversation of the rather macabre gentleman that served me at the bar. (I think his name was Jack, or perhaps Vikram?)After promising that I would stay for no longer than the half lager shandy I had so craved, I ended up staying for another and, as the light kissed the face of the young man serving me, I was forced to sit down as my knees were shaking so. I had stumbled across my doppelganger! Not just in looks but also in bravado and whimsical chat. His perfections and imperfections reflected my very own character and facial features. He was broader of neck and with a slightly less mature hairline, but the likeness was uncanny still. Its lack of cause and object filled me with a bizarre awe, and his three days' stubble spoke to me of a troubled soul - one that might leave the stage in the middle of a song. I quickly finished my drink, dazed by a combination of mystery and alcohol and hurried out of the bar, abruptly. I would recommend this restaurant and will return, braver, to sample the food.Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, until my next visit when we will once more try to decipher this tangle of thorns!

We were greeted and seated promptly, offered drinks which were delivered in no time and our order was taken. The food arrived within good time and was tasty (the beef quesadillas were a great recommendation from the waiter!). Once our starters were cleared, our mains arrived in no time at all, despite the kitchen being backed up and the staff rushed off their feet. In spite of this, the food was fab and the service never faltered. We were served by a few different members of staff (who were all great!) but a special thanks must go to John(?) I absalutely love this place - the staff are so friendly and the food is always 100%. I gave it four stars and I'll tell you why - my boyfriend and I discovered this gem of a place about six weeks ago and I think we've been about ten times since (together or with friends). I always get the pinchos and sweet potato fries and he always gets the chicken wings. Although the portions are small, it's always been worth it because you generally get a main and a side for a tenner (pinchos 6.95 and fries 3.50). Unfortunately I was there again on the 31st may, having a few cocktails in the sun and I ordered pinchos again.... And they are now 9.95 with no side - they have actually jumped by 50%. I couldn't believe it. So after paying 13.50 for a meal that just about fills you (instead of a tenner) I probably wouldn't go back. The food and staff and everything about the place is amazing but for me, it's not value for money anymore. Also, the manager needs to get more waiting staff and fast. The staff are so lovely and are trying there very best but the service is really really slow - I'm never in a rush so it's been fine about the wait but if I was in a rush I wouldn't recommend it.

I visited here on a Thursday with a friend for some lunch. After catching up for a while, we realised that the food still hadn't arrived... It was about 40 minutes since we ordered and as I had to make it back to work, it wasn't ideal. When we asked about our order, we were advised that it would be with us within the next 5 minutes. They explained the reason it took so long was due to several large orders coming in at once and the waitress apologised. The food arrived and was tasty. I ordered the pulled beef sandwich and the soup. I would definetely reccommend the soup, it had a really nice consistency and tasted great. When we asked for the bill, we were advised there was no charge at all - our lunch was completely free. Obviously it was inconvenient and annoying we waited for so long however they definetely won it back by doing this. They could have just as easily not did anything. Before leaving, the waitress brought over some drinks vouchers for when we next came back. Totally appreciate that delays can happen, what was impressive was how it was handled - well done guys.

On April 12th, in job hunting, I came across a vacancy on the Jobcentre online website of a Kitchen Porter job going at Bird Cage, Stranmillis road..On Saturday morning the 28th May at 9.50am, I get a phone call from head chef calling for my services. I was asked to come in straight away. Something to do with his other KP calling in sick or something and you know what, I couldn’t blame that KP for calling in sick which it will be explained a little later here. He mentioned that I would be paid as well. So hungover as I was, I said that I be there in an hour and a half.I arrived shortly after 11am, got stuck in, all the usual showing around of what is what and which items goes where and stuff like that. I was expected to prepare and label food for chefs and running around like a proper idiot to put it politely all over the premises from store room to kitchen and back and forth ect, as well as dealing with shxx loads of dishes, pots, pans, trays, containers, tubs ect, ect. It was explained to me that the working hours were from 11am to 2pm followed by a 3 or so hour break and start back at 5pm right through to closing time. I was outright put on the busiest days, Thursdays right through to Sundays, with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday being my days off, them 3 days I take it were the least busiest. There was no sense of organization in shift patterns when working in the kitchen at the Bird Cage. The kitchen is also very, very small and cramped. You could say that it’s one of them rooms that isn’t big enough to even swing a cat. I was offered to go on a break at about 3pm but I refused. The dishes ect just kept rolling in, had I went on a break for a couple of hours, when I came back, there would have been an epic backlog of dishes, pots, pans ect to have dealt with. So I worked on, it was common sense to have kept on top of the work load, rather than the work load being on top of me had I went on that break. So yes, I was constantly on my feet from the point I walked in the door at “11am” right through to closing time “11pm” and an hour and a half beyond that “12.30am” in cleaning of the cooking equipment and other parts of the kitchen area. I was shattered like no other, also aching from leg to foot. I could barely walk up the stairs when I got home to climb into my box.. I was expected to turn up again this morning for 9am sharp. For a similar shift, in working until closing and beyond that. In thinking about it for a few hours in the early hours of this morning, I thought to myself, “fxxx that” So I emailed the head chef in explaining this. I also paid a visit this evening to tell him in person, what with not managing to get to sleep until around 7.30 this morning, I asked him did he not get the email and he say’s he don’t read emails much So I had to verbally explain again in person. I also asked about shortening the shifts to 6 hours, that I would be willing to work everyday at 6 hours per day rather than working so many days and taking so many day’s off with the current shift pattern of 12+hrs per day. In considering to spilt the shifts between 2 KPs rather than hiring 1 KP for all the KP needs that is required for working within Birdcage, He proceeded to say that it won’t be really possible, that the hours were from 11am to 2pm with a 3 hr break and to start back from 5pm to closing. But inbetween those 3hrs which he thinks a KP is not required, technically the restaurant is still open and taking in customers so I just don’t understand where he is coming from in looking at it like that. So I took the decision to just pack it in after doing one serious hectic shift at Bird Cage. It was busy, seriously busy, with working in such cramped conditions were your constantly bumping into chefs in putting items away. It isn’t something I could cope with in the long term and with the hours your also expected to work in there and what is being requested to you regards taking a break within a seriously busy atmosphere, It’s messed up and completely disorganised to say the least..I didn’t get paid for last night’s shift..

Initially, we were a bit disappointed when we arrived to find that the brunch menu was not available, even though it was well within the time stated on the menu itself. We eventually made our choices, and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious. And although at first the portion sizes seemed a bit stingy, we both left satisfied. I would however add that £3.50 for a small portion of sweet potato fries was a bit much. All that said, we would definitely go back.

Called in early evening one Friday and we were greeted by a friendly waiter wearing wonderfully colourful shoes. My daughter thought his shoes were the coolest things ever! Had a juice jar effort which is well worth the money and very tasty.Main courses were fabulous and would recommend the house slaw! So many flavours and textures to enjoy.Chicken was great; wings were amazing; ribs were terrific. Couldn't find fault. And my daughter's opinion? Read the title of this review ;-)

We fell upon this place by accident. It was a hot May evening and we wanted to eat outside. Birdcage has an outside dining area called Loteria which specialises in Mexican cuisine. We had a selection of items including, a burger, spicy chicken wings and sweet potato chips all of which were delicious.Service was extremely friendly though slow because they were rushed off their feet at this time (around 6pm). Nevertheless we enjoyed our meal which included a bottle of wine. I had difficulty getting the bill so I had to pursue our waitress inside and paid at the till. I was surprised that she didn't offer me a receipt or in fact a paper bill - just added it up on the till - and it was quite expensive for three single courses and a bottle of cheap wine. But they were busy and we were in a hurry so I let it go. I'd like to try this place again, but I will be more careful to check the bill next time. Maybe go when they they are not so busy. Nice food, though.

I ordered a few meals off Deliveroo as I had seen such good reviews and this was a placed I hadn't tried. Although prompt to arrive I thought that the portion sizes were very small for the rather steep price. In fairness the food was cooked very well and was tasty but the bread that came with my pinchos was slightly disappointing, I guess I was expecting more than a few slices of french baguette. Obviously, because my food was a takeaway it was not as fresh as it would have been in the restaurant itself and that is completely understandable and I would definitely like to venture over to try some more things on the menu. Unfortunately, (call me stingy or tight-fisted) the value for money, or lack thereof has overshadowed my meal on this occasion.

As the sun was shining today we decided to head down to Birdcage to take advantage of their new brunch menu and large open air terrace. As always, staff were warm and welcoming, the veggie breakfast was stunning and the asparagus a wonderful touch, my daughter had the eggs benedict, perfect and beautifully presented. One of my favourite restaurants in Belfast, could have stayed all day. Go!

I'll start with the two for one margaritas which, on a beautiful sunny evening, are lively as well as expectantly refreshing. Served swiftly yet with personal and friendly, recommending with morish enthusiasm the varied and specialised cocktail list for further opportunities to embrace this reborn venue. Hasten to add the girls and boys stayed with the excellent Margs! The food, the food, the food! It ain't text mex, it ain't Mexican, it ain't Chilli. ITS LATINO! Street food combos, fresh as tomorrow produce, all locally sourced or locally purchased to establish a holistic "we buy into this.." move to serve up blacken Cod with chilli, lime, lemon orange kaleidoscope dressing. Crunch provided by a root veg slaw - no mayo in sight! Thank goodness. A share partner was the Glazed Ribs. Wow, the best restaurant Ribs I've ever tasted and to describe would ensue an essay, so I'll describe off the menu; slow cooked, naturally, in house sauce. Taste and you will believe! This is not a food hangover place this is eat, be satisfied and comeback place. Finally the side salad of Spinach with cranberries, poppy seeds, toasted almonds in a paprika vinegarette is a delight. Bye chicken in the basket. Hello Latino freshness, energy and hip swinging groove. A must and a word of advice; let the staff guide you and your palette so you just have to ponder which cocktail to have next!

Don't call in to this bar enough. Today is no different to any other times we have visited just brillant. We called in to the bar after a early Friday afternoon finish. What better way to start the weekend. Our welcoming host Chris couldn't do enough for us and was superb. Friendly and welcoming. Even put up with us changing our mind on were we sat, and asking the manager for a special request which was no problem at all.The bar in general is a little quirky, and would advise to check there facebook for the offers being run. While we only snacked with the drinks, have eaten her before. Well worth the price on menu. We sat out side to enjoy the afternoon sun. With ample seating and a covered area with newly installed over head heaters. They supply lovely red blankets for cooler evenings. It is obvious they are investing some money into the bar and the work is looking good. There is on street parking out the front and flat paved area which suit wheelchair customers. We was speaking to the the manager (sadly never got her name). Her hosting equal that we received on arrival by the day bar staff. This place really appreciate there customers. Will be back to try some of the new specials and events being planned.Check the blackboard specials around the bar for drinks, cocktails and Food&Drink combos.

After going to the birdcage a year ago and loving it, I definitely wanted to go again. The staff are lovley and welcoming and the decorations are still great - it's nice to look around a place that isn't just every other chain restaurant. My husband had the chicken burger and I tried the chicken picos(?? I think I've remembered that right... chicken skewers basically) and it was very nice indeed. Sweet potato fries are always a win with me!! The only thing I was a little disappointed to see was that the menu was different, with what seemed less variety than last year, which was a shame.

Had a meal here before going to see a show, staff were excellent and helpful.Menu wasn't what we had expected in that it was quite limited and food was heated up and deep fried. Our food was far too salty, and we had 3 very small chicken skewers and 3 ribs.......... £15 was far too expensive for this and we were quite shocked at the lack of value for 'fast food'Uncomfortable seats ...... Wouldn't think about returning.

We called in for a quick drink after a visit to the museum and were blown away by the friendly and professional staff. Marco immediately served us drinks and we had a chat about the decor based on "The day of the dead" -celebrated in Mexico, it turned out he created the fantastic art work. The music created a great atmosphere and had we not had a late lunch we would have stayed for dinner. Fantastic cocktail menu and Marco can great individual cocktails also. Lydia was also very friendly and we had a great chat regarding holidays, you can tell the staff like working there. Will definitely go back.

The food was delicious, the cocktails were amazing, and the experience overall was fantastic. We will definitely be back, and we highly recommend exploring this bar at least once. The owner was very friendly, introduced himself, and updated us on the new menu as well as what he hopes to accomplish as bar owner.Truly, an amazing man.

Went for a mid week catch up and was blown away by the new menu! The homemade nachos with beef were so light and crisp and the homemade guacamole was the best I've ever tasted. The sweet potato fries were perfect, crisp on the outside, fluffy inside with just the right amount of seasoning. The Mexican theme is great, the art work, cocktails and the menu really make for a brilliant night out! I really enjoyed the spinach, almond and cranberry salad, it was the so fresh and the flavours were such a good combination. Fresh food, fun atmosphere, and amazing cocktails, come and try the new menu asap!

Six of us met here for a meal and it was great. The food was delicious and the service was attentive and friendly. The background music was a bit loud for good conversation, but it was so atmospheric (Brazilian and Mexican) that I can't complain. The food is Mexican with a bit of a twist. The cocktails looked good, but we stuck to water because most of us were driving. I would definitely return. Highly recommended.

We were three guys meeting for a catch-up. Fun was more important than fine dining and this hit the spot. Great tapas at reasonable prices. We shared spicy tacos, spicy wings and quesadillas. Chilean Sauvignon at £13, deals on buckets of Heineken. Atmosphere is first class. One of the guys said, "I'd forgotten for the past few minutes we're in Belfast. Feels more like being on holiday." Really enjoyed meeting owner Bonnie Turkington, who I remember from half a lifetime ago in her folks' restaurant The Strand, which was further down Stranmillis Road. It's the only restaurant where I've eaten three meals in a single day! Bonnie's keeping a great tradition going for another generation.

Myself and 4 sisters went here before going on to the Lyric Theatre. Some of the members of the party were of the older generation and found the benches and backless stools uncomfortable. I had a pulled pork burger. It was fatty and had too much barbecue sauce. Another member of the party had the same and was not happy with it either. Others had chicken burgers and they were average. The sweet potato accompaniment was not so good either. The potato was soggy and oily. I would not recommend this restaurant.

I visit this restaurant regularly as I live around the university area and the food is usually really nice (apart from sometimes the sweet potato fries are a bit too greasy!), there is usually no problem seating about 7-8 people with a maximum wait time of about 10 minutes. My only problem with here is that the wall seats are very small, they are pretty uncomfortable to sit at for any longer than 20 minutes... not a problem if you get seated at the front of the restaurant or outside!

Had a great lunch here at the weekend. I had the buttermilk chicken on a waffle with poached egg and salsa and it was super; the chicken was perfectly cooked and the flavours and textures worked perfectly together. It was so good I ate it slowly as I didn't want it to finish! My wife had the smashed avocado and it worked in exactly the same way. Add to this their lovely locally roasted coffee, a shared brownie to finish, really nice staff leaving two happy punters. Will definitely be back.
