Birdcage Hessle in East Riding of Yorkshire

Absolutely loved it here! Great service all round, both from the guy who welcomed us and the girl who served our drinks. Really tasty long island cocktails and delicious burgers. Liked being able to see the food and drinks being made. Portions were very generous! The starter of bread and oil and was bigger than we expected and the burgers were huge! We commented that for the price we definitely didn't expect 2 patties! No space for pudding unfortunately, but they looked good. Final treat was a paper bag of sweets delivered with the bill which was a lovely surprise!

We arrived on a quiet Sunday evening to be looked after by Simon , service was spot on and the food chef Ben prepared was superb , a little hidden gem which deserves to be a success .

If there were 6 stars for service we'd have given them. Nothing was too much trouble & the team made sure our celebration was really special. Food was freshly prepared & super tasty. So glad we found The Bird Cage & we will be back. Deserves more than the 4.6 stars it averages.

My recent visit to bird cage was an absolute delight from start to finish. The moment we stepped in, we were greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere that set the tone for the rest of the evening. The staff, from the servers to the owner, exuded genuine hospitality, making us feel right at home. As for the food, I opted for the fish and chips, and I must say, it was a culinary delight. The fish was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, while the chips were crispy and seasoned to perfection. Each bite was a testament to the kitchen's skill and dedication to quality. What truly impressed me was how our large party of 11 was effortlessly accommodated. Despite the size of our group, every dish arrived promptly and was met with smiles of satisfaction. It's rare to find a restaurant that can consistently deliver excellence, especially with a large party, but bird cage exceeded all expectations. Overall, my experience at bird cage was nothing short of exceptional. From the beautiful ambiance to the attentive staff and delicious food, it's a place I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. Really enjoyable Sunday lunch , warm welcome on arrival from the owner then introduced to the chef who ran through the menu with us , two roast beef and two roast chicken dinners were ordered and promptly served , food was excellent , four clean plates accompanied by two bottles of pinot noir at a very reasonable price , nice venue , lovely staff and good food and drink well priced , we will be back .

Four of us visited in December 2023. We ordered two burgers, one chicken burger and Salmon. The burgers were overcooked and dry. Chicken seems ok. The Salmon fillet was microscopic and dry, again overcooked. The restaurant has a tropical theme but it's cold and draughty, I didn't take my coat off the whole time. Service was ok. Would I recommend it? ...absolutely not!

me and my husband were greeted at the door by the owner and was served quickly. the owner sat with us and sheared a conversation. the chef was polite and helpful ,as were all the staff, about questions the do with the menu the food was delightful as were the cocktails would one hundred percent recommend coming here will be back soon.

We were sat around the open kitchen area, and it was amazing seeing the food that was being cooked. Enjoyed the meal & the cocktails. Definitely got food envy, the staff attentive & friendly. I am aware not long opened so I noticed little teething issues but nothing that would not fall into place in time. Will return again. Very warm and welcoming.

Over priced for the portion sizes. Mixed greens ordered as a side. Four sticks of broccoli. When asked why it’s mixed greens when all there is is broccoli we were told they had run out of the other greens! Understandable that ingredients can run out, but why not be upfront with the customer rather than taking a chance?! Have no urgency to visit this restaurant again.

We won a voucher for Birdcage and thought we'd try it out, and it didn't disappoint. When we went inside, we were greeted by Simon, the owner. He gave us the pick of the tables and I ordered the chicken burger and the wife ordered the duo of pies, both with thick cut chips. When the food came out, it looked wonderful, and tasted as good as it looked. The pies were also made in house by the chef and there was plenty of meat in them. (the ones she had were beef and ale and chicken and spinach) We will be coming back again, and been told they do a mean Sunday roast, so will definitely be trying that. Once again, thank you for a wonderful meal.

FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH!! Was greeted with a warm welcome from the owner which was very nice, and was served 2-4-1 on the cocktails which doesn’t happen in Hessle! The food was well portioned and cooked to a very high standard (Seriously good). Menu is well varied and will suit all. The cocktails were made with fresh ingredients and were as tasteful as the food. We was not rushed in any way, and the waiters went above and beyond with service. The bill was beyond reasonable for the quality of food/drinks! All in all, extremely happy and will be going back to try the tomahawk steak very soon! Best restaurant we have been to in Hessle.

The chef (Tom) was amazing, so friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we got what we wanted and even gave us some extras! Even sat with us and gave us a chat! Lovely to see the Birdcage re-open, as the venue is nicely decorated with a nice atmosphere, which hasn’t changed. We were greeted by the new owner Simon, who was attentive and personable. Our food was lovely, really tasty. Starters were a variation on a scotch egg with a delicious tomato and garlic chutney and flavoursome grilled halloumi with ribboned carrots and orange. Main course was steak, slightly underdone for our liking but still tasty, and pan friend chicken in a lovely creamy mushroom sauce. Drinks were spot on with a good cocktail menu. And service was impeccable, although we picked a very quiet Sunday to visit. The bill was reasonable for the quality of the food and we would absolutely go back. Thank you

Last minute decision walk in & Simon & the Team where more than accommodating for the 7 of us, Friendly atmosphere Simon the new owner introduced his self along with the chef taking time to come over & speak with us also . If you're a fan of hearty breakfasts served with a side of warm hospitality, this is the place to be I can't wait to return.

We came to Birdcage a few months ago now for a family celebration. The food was great, and the staff were attentive which made a decent change from the other restaurants that were here in this same building previously.

This is an absolute culinary experience every time I come back to the area. I am determined to work my way through their menu of unique and creative original cocktails, which may take some time, at least without being completely hammered. And, on this occasion, I had the scallop and king prawn pappadelle. Made to a fantastic standard by Amy, I am told that they roast their own tomatoes to create an exquisitely simple sauce with basil and chilli and whole tender cloves of garlic, with my scallops being cooked to perfection by Jamie. When I finished, I only wished I'd ordered a flatbread to mop up what was left on that plate of delights.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch in this friendly and pretty restaurant. Incredibly accommodating regarding food intolerances and made sure there was plenty of menu choice whilst still avoiding cow's milk and gluten. Thank you!

Oh my, how things have changed, well, I left a glowing review (see below) a few months ago and this place was wrapped in gold. Now however, it's broken in my opinion. Why the owners changed something so drastically that worked I'll never know. Booked this a few weeks ago after several amazing experiences with them for my Daughters 21st birthday. I was so lucky I called to check my booking was all good as I thought I'd just check reviews as things can unfortunately change.... So glad I did, they have completely changed the menu and didn't even bother to let us know. If we had gone for my daughters 21st it would fo ruined her day and ours as not one thing on the menu is something any of us could eat. Shocked to say the least. When I called, I explained the situation and asked why we wasn't informed as they had our contact details and the staff didn't know what to say other than 'oh'.... No apology, no way of trying to help correct the situation. Just left with one option which was to cancel. Horrendous customer service, bloody awful and overly expensive menu. A massive and unnecessary change to what was the best place to eat in Hessle is now no more on my list. Shame. Huge thumbs down 👎 --------- My old review ---------- Went here for a birthday meal. My first visit, food was excellent, watched them make my meal and as I had pizza the pizza station was literally next to my seat and the chef was chatting to me while he made it. Such a lovely lively restaurant/cocktail bar. Had dinner in their last night and the new menu is very impressive. The prawn curry was so tasteful and the scallops melted in the mouth. Really friendly staff, well priced and great atmosphere. Great to watch the chef hand toast the meringue too.

Booked for a 50th birthday, several weeks in advance. Received a call to confirm attendance and a text. On arrival restaurant was lovely with a great vibe and the staff were friendly. We were lucky to get the actual birdcage. Sadly, the menu was completely different and primarily fish based even a chicken dish had a fish based sauce. This was unfortunate timing that they had a new menu and as everything we had planned to eat had gone except for a steak, which none of us fancied, we had no choice but to leave. We spoke to the staff and the manager offered to ring their sister restaurant to try get us a table, but as it was a Saturday they were also fully booked. We ended up leaving and going elsewhere. Knowing that the restaurant had contacted us about attendance I feel it would of been a good time to notify us of the changes.

After a previous visit a week ago and having a great meal and service how things can change. Just been to this restaurant tonight and all I can say is the new menu is now overpriced and the food is not of an acceptable standard. The sirloin steak was served under temperature (cold). The crab skewers are a meager portion. On leaving the restaurant we was offered one replacement meal if we returned, don't think so.To add insult to injury we was charged over £12 service charge. On leaving we was informed the sirloin steak would be taken off the menu as others had complained. All I can say is if you wish to have a meal in Hessle take a look at some of the great takeaways and restaurants in Hessle but don't waste your money in the Bird Cage.

Beautiful quirky restaurant. The food looked & smelled amazing & was delicious. I had the chorizo crumb chicken supreme, my mum had the pork belly starter & chips & my friend Angela had the miso cod. This great little restaurant is now our favourite , for a number of positive reasons. The staff are welcoming and attentive, without being intrusive and always look bothered and engaged. The food is delicious, with a great menu, that has enough diversity to cater for every taste and dietary requirement but is not so big that it becomes boring. Fair prices too, with the steak being a real showstopper, a huge piece of prime fillet steak which is always cooked to absolute perfection is my go to option, prices compare very favourably with other establishments in the area, while the portion sizes are generous and the presentation really makes the meals feel special. I honestly cannot think of one negative criticism of this place and would always book this venue for any special occasion, it is that good.
