Birdcage. in Chesterfield

Not one to complain but, we went to Birdcage for an afternoon tea that was booked for 9 people. One week before our reservation date I left a voicemail stating that there would only be 7 people coming to the afternoon tea and requested for 2 of the deposits to be refunded if this was possible. It then came to the day we were meant to be going and I received confirmation of booking stating that its booked for 9 people, I then rang to say that there is only 7 people now coming and again could the 2 deposits be refunded and also mentioned that I had called a week prior requesting this. I was then told that it cannot be refunded as they have already made up the food. However if there were only 7 of us arriving surely we would’ve been given the same amount of food meaning 2 platters or were they expecting 7 people to share 1 platter? We did manage to arrange for 2 others to come so there were 9 of us that arrived. We arrived on time and we didn’t get greeted bare in mind we were the only people in there, we had to sit ourselves down and then asked if this is where we were meant to sit. Shortly after the rest of our party arrived. We were then asked if we would like the Prosecco package or the tea/coffee package. Different members of our party had Prosecco and others had the tea/coffee. We had the sandwich platter which was nice not up to much. One of the waitresses came over asking if we would like any more drinks to which a member asked if we were to have another tea/coffee would it all be included or would it have to paid as extra? To which the waitress replied that it is all included so she then asked for a decaf cappuccino. As well as this another member of our party asked for another tea to which they just gave her a pot of boiling water to pour in to the previous teapot with teabags in it for her to pour it into. When the time came to pay at the end we all paid are parts equally without being given the bill or helped with working out/splitting the bill. It came to the final person left to pay to which they asked ‘how much is left’ to which the waitress replied sheepishly the amount left to pay including ‘extras’. We were all confused as to what ‘extras’ we have had. So then we were told the extra teas/coffee. Tea being a top up of boiling water to which she had to pay £2.80 for. I think this is disgusting as it was clearly stated to us that ‘all drinks are included in the set price of £20 understandably Prosecco isn't which we were fine with. But paying £2.80 for a top up of boiling water is unacceptable. So for £20 you get one tea/coffee and a sandwich and a scone. Poorly advertised, do better.

We reserved a table for my mums birthday, all staff really welcoming and polite. We were sat near the door which was perfect for my 5 month old puppy who was in-fact fussed by the staff giving him treats and water. He was a little unsettled barking and did get out of his lead and ran towards the bar, staff really friendly and did not make this a problem. Lovely food and reasonably priced, we had brought a cake for my mums birthday and were brought plates etc to eat the cake there if we like, as not many places let you do this anymore. Would recommend to anyone even if it’s just for a coffee.

Took a seat as instructed waited 10 mi utes whilst people who came after me were served, seems if you are a regular vant do enough if you drop in you go to the back burner, what a shame but dreadful service food looked and smelled lovely but I was not able to partake.

This is a beautiful place with fantastic staff! I had breakfast, such good value for money, I always recommend this place to everyone.. highly recommended ❤️

What a fantastic dog friendly cafe this is! We visited with our dog on a Sunday lunchtime. I had booked a table in advance for 3 people and our medium sized dog. We were shown to a table in the window. Our dog settled down on the floor and we looked over the menu. A young lady came over to take our order. We went for 2 x steak & Stilton paninis and 1 x bacon & Brie panini, 1 x side of cheesy chips and 1 x Parmesan & truffle oil chips. All of the food was fresh, tasty and delicious. Nothing disappointed. I can certainly recommend the bacon & Brie panini 😋 The cakes looked amazing but we were too full to have any of them. We will definitely be visiting here again and will try the cakes!

We came in for breakfast and it was delicious! Very warm, cosy atmosphere and the staff were very attentive. Also very reasonably priced, will definitely be back :)

Firstly I would like to say I have visited this cafe times many. Last year there was parking restrictions and I was even parking two streets away. Not a problem. Visited Bird Cage this morning and it was really busy. Now it’s supposed to be dog friendly, I have always taken my dog and this is why we meet here. However, today I was told to leave because my dog was barking. He’s only s small dog and heard a dog outside. He wasn’t barking for long before she ( Rachel) asked me to leave. I was really upset as everyone was looking over. Make your mind up Bird Cage, you’re either dog friendly or not??? Gave 1 star because no option to give no stars and I won’t be visiting you again EVER…

looks nice.. it’s Nothing special thought I would try it and wished I had not wasted my money food is nothing special and overpriced.. i ordered grilled chicken breast salad and avocado.. the salad was brown and possibly only just in date.. and the chicken wasn’t grilled it was microwaved or boiled and it was 3 fillets not breast tasted awful.. i don’t eat it and for £12 was a fatal waste of money.. i will not be returning.. was so overpriced for a plate of old lettuce and over dry chicken!! i would not recommend this place far nicer places than this and cheaper.. not with it., the staff well the younger girl that took the bill was rude.. don’t bother!!!!

Could not fault this Hidden Gem ! Service & Attention to detail was perfect hosted by Rachael. We had afternoon tea for a friends 60th today and we all enjoyed the experience! The food was presented well & more than enough to eat for all of us. The scones & little cakes were just amazing & happy to box some up for me to bring home. I would highly recommend the Birdcage to anyone & hopefully will be returning soon . Thank you .

Booked a table for 10am as I had a hair appointment at 11-30 thinking that is loads of time……. No!!!! I went to pay the bill at 11-15 haven’t not been fed. The table next to us got fed and arrived after us!!!! How does that work bearing in mind it was breakfast not something exotic that you have to prepare for…… not happy doesn’t even cover it!! They even took my money for the coffee knowing I was not happy. But thank you to the lady in front of me at the till as I literally pushed in front to pay so I could get to my appointment

Nothing special was driving past and thought I would try it and wished I had not wasted my money food is nothing special and overpriced and as for outdoor seating if you enjoy eating with the noise of traffic and fumes you may like it but not for me Wrong place to have a cafe and I did observe how others were filling up the streets nearby which makes me feel sorry for residents that live round there Would not recommend so many better places you can go cheaper and breath in fresh air if you want to sit outside on a nice day !

I've just had an intimate afternoon tea for myself and thirteen friends in their small function room...It was absolutely perfect, thanks to the very efficient Rachel who made sure everything went just as I had asked for and nothing was too much trouble....the afternoon tea with pink prosecco was fresh and plentiful...thank you Birdcage...I certainly will return

We booked in advance to discuss food allergies. Lovely freshly cooked food, wonderful service. Very comfortable in here. My favourite eatery in Chesterfield, catering for our food intolerancesvand allergies.

A chilly December evening meet up with friends & we were sat at the table at the front of the café near the door. Service, food, drinks & ambiance were all good. Our evening was constantly interrupted & spoiled as we had to keep shutting the door which was repeatedly left open by inconsiderate customers entering & exiting the premises. I urge the owners to fit a closing gizmo on the door which fully closes it when it’s left ajar. It really did spoil an otherwise lovely evening.

Amazing cakes! Visited on a cold December afternoon, and the place was warm and welcoming. We all had a selection of cakes and hot chocolates, which were all delicious. The white chocolate ferrero rocher cake was particularly good. Will be back to try some others soon.

Went here today for a Baby Shower. The most amazing place with equally amazing staff. The food was amazing, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and the atmosphere was so relaxing. Seamless booking for a large group. Can’t recommend this place highly enough. Will definitely be going back.

Went for the special pie night .. have got to say the food was the best most delicious pie ever...full of the most tastiest tender steak loads of it. Great atmosphere lovely friendly staff love it there

Swung by birdcage to get a slice of cake to takeaway. The cake was fantastic, the best I’ve had in a long time! Will definitely be back!

First visit to this pleasant Cafe with friends. The food was very good, and well presented … lovely salad, quiche, cheesy chips, - delicious! The staff were very friendly and helpful and a good menu for gluten-free customers like me. Good coffee too. Our first visit, but it won’t be the last!

Absolutely terrible service and food. Got told we had to wait 40 minutes for the lunch time menu to start as they were a bit busy with breakfast orders despite 4 tables being occupied. Waited over an hour for someone to take our order to then find hairs in the food. Got asked what I would like to do lol so the response was change it obviously. So me and my wife ended up eating separate only to be asked at the end if all the food was ok. I sarcastically said well despite the hairs. No apology, nothing. Dreadful service, dreadful food, dreadful experience. Won’t be going back.

We had our first visit to the Bird Cage Cafe a few days ago. I really enjoyed it, great food and coffee. We also got a very warm welcome. Will definitely make a return visit.

Just had an amazing Lasagna at Birdcage Italian evening. To be honest I was expecting something special from Rachel’s pasta dish and I certainly wasn’t disappointed!! Service & food excellent as always. This little gem on Derby Road is going from strength to strength

It was an aweful experience! We waited over a hour for our food which then came out in stages, not altogether. I never got my side order. I friends steak meal arrived cold. The staff I’d guess hadn’t had sufficient training. There was no apology when we asked where our delayed food was, no apology as it was delivered in stages , and no apology that the steak was cold on the sandwich. The words please and thank you were never used by the staff. A very disappointing experience.

I visited The Birdcage this morning for a Full English Breakfast & was extremely impressed by the friendliness of the staff & the quality & presentation of my food. I requested a poached egg instead of fried, it was cooked perfectly with a sprinkling of pepper on top. The A team were on duty today

Popped in for coffee and a breakfast treat early one Sunday morning following a recommendation. Nice coffee and excellent bacon sandwich and croissants all served quickly and with a friendly smile. Only downsides are limited parking on adjacent side streets, noise from A61 traffic if...

The food is amazing, fresh and served quickly. The are staff are lovely as well. My new favourite in chesterfield xx highly recommend

We waited an hour and twenty minutes for 3 ciabattas and 1 sandwich, after an hour we asked it it was going to be much longer and we were told they were preparing it then but the kitchen is tiny!! We had all ordered tea...

Visited for lunch on Friday. Excellent halumi fries. Very welcoming to both us and our canine friend. Will definitely visit again

Popped in for breakfast and really enjoyed the place. Nice friendly staff and good food. The chef had an issue with electrics but we were informed quickly and food still excellent. Well done guys.

Went to try out for Tea. The Steak and Ale pie was to die for. Full of tender Steak and delicious! Partner had the Burger and he said was delicious too. Washed down with a pint of Mahou perfect. Lovely decor would high recommend 🥂🍻🍔🍰
