I lived in Silkstone St when I was growing up was my favourite pub to have a drink with my friends,,this pub was majestic from outside and in,,I was meeting my 2 cousins for a drink and a catch up,as I live now in croxteth park liverpool,they live in st helens,,I have at times called in for a drink many years ago,and it always looked nice,,,sadly on Sunday night when I was meeting my 2 cousins,I was very disappointed when I entered the bird in'th hand, very dull inside,needed a good overall in painting and decorating it,,it used to be like a very nice family pub,a long way from what it is now, the outside as always was impeccable,the barmaid a lovely blonde haired girl was so friendly,the service from was superb,she looked after us very well and took our photo,,,thank you my love,,kevin kerr

Had a night out here recently watching a band. The band was great, the pub not so much. No atmosphere in the place and pretty empty considering a band was on. There was a guy clearly very drunk and kept falling asleep, yet they carried on serving him at least another 4 pints then decided to try and throw him out for being drunk and falling asleep( he wasn't causing trouble ) and he didn't want to go, I don't get why they were serving him in the first place in the state he was in. It's a shame it used to be a cracking pub. its gone down hill massively.

Went for mother's day a group I thought a green king check the menu it basic not much choose I ordered pie it look it had been warmed in the microwave it was freshly cooked some the carvery they said the meat was tough etc some macaroni cheese it only small for the price wasn't worth some went too bar ask for burger said don't do burgers then 5 minates later they brought a customer a double burger out the was like a goust town no one really it was mother's day mother's didn't a free drink or a free meal like other greening chains the chef couldnt under stand english like it all microwave food I been a chef my self standards of the food was rubbish we must spend a lest 200 hundred pounds altogether nothing too show for I think they need too get a decent chef in change the menu more variety etc and FRESH COOKED food go too the grapes across the road get some tips how too run a resturant and a proper carvery plus none of staff had uniform on etc the looks run down and tired needs money put in too get customers throw the door until they do some improvment iwill not be back

Ok ish pub beer needs some loving - I live in the land of Johnny Vegas. Visited here to watch the Rugby not been here before but beer is average

Proper pub sunday roast👍 really tasty, lots of meat, veg and huge yorkshire pudding. Seems like a lovely local pub, everyone really friendly. And 2 x sunday roasts for £20 when we went... bargain.

Exactly the same as it was 10 years ago, friendly staff and good pint at a good price point.

Visited here with friends one weekend, there was a live band playing, the atmosphere was great everyone had a nice time, staff was very friendly and the environment was clean, would visit again

Gobsmacked been drinking here every Wednesday for over 35 years. Seen many landlords and landladies come and go. Generally a group of between 6/10 people. Last orders are around 10.15pm, We went in on 09/11 and last orders was called at 09:45pm signe in pub say 10.15pm Thurs to Sun, when questioned staff member said the sign was wrong. Heard earlier to say I’ve been in since 9 and had enough. We were out for 10.15pm. Decided we wouldn’t visit again. Tonight we relented as it’s central. Only 8 of us in the pub, not a soul else in after 9.30pm, no last orders called went to bar at 10.16pm only to be told till had been taken off. Girl behind bar very apologetic but said couldn’t do anything else as under orders and tills off. 35 years will not return with my group until new ownership. Feel emotional but principled. These present owners just do not care.

Sat watching the match, amazing service from the team an good price on drinks however what we cannot stand is swatting away fruit flies from In front of our faces every 10 seconds, these breed in water please address it.

Wir waren letzte Woche dort und das Personal war sehr zuvorkommend und kinderfreundlich. Der Parkplatz ist sehr groß und für unerfahrene Fahrer mit Wohnanhänger eine gute Sache. :)

Friendly staff and general atmosphere. Opted for lamb out of the 3 choices (turkey, beef or lamb). Roasties were crisp and fluffy, mash was buttery and not overly "riced" (makes the texture like out of a packet), carrot and swede had butter and a touch of white pepper. Cabbage was seasoned well. Lamb was well done (may put some off who prefer it pink), it had a mustard crust originally from the flavour. Yorkshire was crisp and not soggy. Cons: Main downside was the stuffing, small amount and dry. Lack of variation (ie a menu), perhaps due to it being Sunday. No desserts or starters (again, perhaps due to it being a Sunday). No drinks pricing around it seemed, not even sure if they do cocktails Sadly the above con's puts them quite far behind the competition, say the Grapes Hotel etc. Overall however recommended for what they do actually do. If i make it midweek at some point I will update this review.

The staff are superb and absolutely go out if there way to ensure you enjoy your visit. , food is liveky, Guinness is tge best around

Visited for the first time around a month ago. I’ve lived in the area now for around 5 years and never visited until then and let me tell you I was impressed, that impressed it’s become a regular weekly thing to visit for food and drinks. Food is absolutely delicious, the atmosphere is inviting and the staff are on a whole new level. Charlotte and Andy are welcoming and the bar staff always provide 5* service with a smile. Quiz night on a Wednesday is entertaining and a good laugh and the love entertainment on a Saturday is lively and enjoyable. It’s a great pub to visit for food and drink and even better it’s dog friendly. Thank you to Charlotte, Andy and the fantastic staff.

Visited today for food! It was absolutely lovely! I had the steak melt wrap and my partner had sausage and mash and it was cooked to perfection! The staff are so welcoming and there is such a lovely atmosphere in the pub! Everyone sitting chatting to each other and to top it off! Service with a smile Will definitely be visiting again

Delicious Sunday roast dinner today with my husband and kids ,clean plates all round . Lovely Friendly staff 🙂 even got a lovely flower off the staff for mothers day 🌺we will definitely be back soon

my wife booked this place for after her dads funeral...although ide been a few times over the years..we found out to have a great experiance as we where there for the day..the staff could not of done any more ,always asking if we had enough food ect..bar staff where great too...asking was everyone ok...cant thank them enough..well done to you all for running a great buisness..dave.c.

Not been in for a very long time. What a very pleasant person Andy is. So polite. We had a few IPA's spot on. We decided on a meal and nicely presented. Andy & Charlotte came over and had a chat. We wish them every success. I understand the Sunday dinners are in big demand. No doubt we will return soon.

We booked here for a buffet after a funeral,food was excellent, well mire than enough for the guest,the cook kept asking if we needed anymore,var staff where mire than helpful, and very reasonable priced drinks.

Went to Bird Ith Hand last night for some food. First time since Covid. New owners Charlotte and her husband, we got a lovely friendly welcome. For those who are a regular to here (prior to Covid) you wait a bit longer than you previously would have for your food but it was worth the wait. Would definitely go back.

A fair pub which is very clean, surprisingly few customers which was not surprising considering the prices are about £2.50 higher than the pubs in the town.

Called in with my brothers and cousins after a walk around Taylor Park. Not many there as it was early afternoon, but it had a lovely atmosphere with friendly, smiling staff and we will definitely go there again.

Not visited here in a quite a while but couldn’t get in anywhere for tea. Things happen for a reason . Relaxing lovely staff a bit of a wait for food but worth it really nice and great value even without the discount will be very happy and comfortable to return thank you c u soon

What a sad place this has become since it was taken over last year, miserable staff and no atmosphere on a Friday / Saturday night and the food is absolutely woeful. The chef must feel so proud to serve that rubbish. I used to go every weekend now I’d rather spend my hard earned money in the Cricketers down the road, great crowd and one hell of a selection of cask beers !

Visited in March and left really disappointed. Decided to give it another go and glad we did. Lovely service, food was great and the place was pleasantly decorated and nice to be in. One minor gripe is that they had run out of veggie burgers but menu sufficient to make a reasonable substitute. Great to see the place back on its feet :)

Called in Sunday with 6 family members for Sunday dinner, there were more staff stood around the bar than actually drinking in the pub. Went to order only to be told that the chef hadn't turned in today, and was on a bender here last night. Some had brought McDonald's in and left empty boxes on the bar. Before we left other people walked in and out when they were told no meals were on today. Plant pots outside were full of empty beer bottles and cig stumps 1 🌟 is only for the for the pint we quickly finished. Not the way to turn the Bird ith Hand into a busy pub again.

The meal was cheap, but certainly not cheerful. Food cold, vile and we were lucky to get it as the staff had no idea which table was which. Worst pub in St Helens, and I’ve been in all of them. Shame you can’t do no stars.

Went in for tea with my wife and granddaughter 4.30ish Friday evening. This was our first visit since the latest referb and change to Greene King, it's the best it's ever been. Other reviews mention the crowds absent from the bar I'm thinking that could be because the Saints ground has now been replaced by a housing estate and the Saints crowd are now in Tesco!! Pub was spotless, no sticky tables or rubbish on floor, staff were friendly and attentive. I had the liver and onions my wife and granddaughter had hunters chicken, Granddaughter is a bit picky but cleared her plate so that would be 10 out of 10 for the food. Highly recommended

Visited the Bird I’th Hand for the first time today for lunch, and found it to be an excellent choice. The pub is apparently under new management, and have to say they seem to be getting it right. We found the staff to be very friendly and efficient.The menu, whether lunch time, or for dinner etc. certainly has a good selection of typical pub grub, we chose the lunchtime menu, which is supposed to be for the lighter bite, and must say the food was excellent, and plenty of it. We had the 2 course for £8.99, and left well fed, and extremely pleased.I would certainly recommend this place to anyone, the food is excellent and great value for money.

Excellent food in a relaxed atmosphere

Came for a pint and was debating food. Bar was unattended why the people who were meant to be behind it were eating with their family. Then seen the chefs come out of the kitchen with a pint and go for a cig

Called in tonight not expect ing anything great to be honest particularly after the fiascos over the last eight months. Pleasantly surprised to find new managers over the last week. Full optics, no glasses on the pumps, flavoured gins and vodkas galore and a very tasty steak and chips from a much improved menu. Great staff and sky t.v. on the way. Things could just be looking up.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. We ordered a lamb Sunday dinner and the food and price were amazing. Fast service too. The only downside is they are new owners so some of the drinks are currently not available but that'll be fixed over time. Highly recommended, all the staff including chefs were friendly too.

No good without Sky etc but the beer was good

This pub is one of a number in the area in old Georgian buildings. It was okay in there...only one couple eating on a Sunday which is a bit worrying and there were quite a few flies buzzing around the dining area. I've given it three stars though because the bar staff were lovely but the pub felt a bit drab and the East Coast IPA was a bit funny tasting compared to others I've had. Would I return here? Not in a hurry I wouldn't no.

Food not good waited over a hour for food then finally got food but found a piece of brocken plate inside food and it was not cooked properly so I will not be going back to the bird in hand

We held my fathers funeral tea here, and where very pleased with the buffet provided. The staff where very efficient and friendly.We would not hesitate to recommend them to family and friends.

For the last 10 years me and my friends have used this pub, we're not what you would call regulars but we go in there every now and again for food and a catch up. Today when I went in (Sunday 30/06/19) the music was broken up and kept skipping songs, wasn't a very nice noise to hear that alone made me want to walk out and go to another pub, every pint we ordered was flat and despite asking for a better top not a single bartender (out of the three on shift) actually poured us a decent pint, £3.30 as well for a Carling, ridiculous, seeing as though the average price in the town center is £3? Ordered food, very limited choice on the menu but I got a cheeseburger, undercooked, pink all over it looked like the cow was taking it's last breath on the bun and the chips tasted like plastic, says they're seasoned but after having seasoned chips from places like nandos, just wings, Bella pizza (all in the wa10 area) the birds seasoned chips just tasted bland. As much as I feel like the staff were trying to be friendly they just came across as snotty and I didn't feel welcome in there. I don't know whether it's because the restarunts in St Helens have got a lot better in the last couple of years or weather the bird really has gone to the dogs but either way, I won't be going back there again after tonight. There's just far better places to spend your money, to give a few examples: the cricketers, the turks and the tavern are all brilliant places to go for a drink and a lot cheaper, the Turks does some of the best food around and with eatery places such as just wings, Bella pizza and Denton's deli why would I want to come back to the bird'th hand?? Weatherspoons is your bog standard company run pub and it serves better quality food and at better prices, so again, why come back to the bird?? Waste of time, waste of money, waste of a Sunday afternoon.. cannot express my disappointment with tonight's service but I hope this review paints some ideas for you, I'd have rather just got a takeaway and some beers from the shop, stayed in and saved some money.. cheers 👍

It is a big old place, this. The staff are just lovely but it seemed to be lacking an atmosphere and intimacy that makes a good boozer. The beers on offer lacked any imagination and variety.

Have just had tea here, ordered all day breakfast and breaded garlic mushrooms with a pint of Bierra Moreti costing £14 odd, was not offered a receipt... Never received my garlic breaded mushrooms or a casual everything ok? In fact the bar lass stayed well away (bet they didn't have any breaded mushrooms). To be fair it's probably my own fault for trusting Someone to cook my tea and not rip me off. Won't be going again.

Not bad but loud 🔊 music at times

Really do not understand some off the negative reviews, we've just had the best food. Sharing platter was amazing, filled me a bit too much but I'm not complaining. We both had burgers but went big with the fully stacked burger and it's honestly the first time in a long time that I struggled to finish it (but i did). Excellent food complements to the chef ( think his name is Andy) and bar very pleasant & friendly staff.

We went in for a few drinks with my 16 month old daughter, it was lovely and clean. Toilets are pristine and lovely. Baby changing available. High chairs are nice and new. Glasses were lovely & clean, a good selection of lagers. Food was being served but we'd already eaten so didn't order. Will be visiting again.

Always liked this pub. Went for lunch yesterday. It was pretty quiet but it was a Tuesday lunchtime so maybe expected although was at a pub a mile away the Tuesday before and it was fairly busy.The food was really good and plentiful but trying to buy a drink wasn’t the best. No Coke or Pepsi and what they did have (diet) was poured from a large plastic bottle. They had no hot drinks, the optics were on dregs and the soda was flat. The lad serving seemed embarrassed but was really pleasant. I’ve rated this as I have because food, service and price were good but really a pub should be able to sell you a drink of your first or second choice. My mum nipped outside for a smoke and got talking to a regular who told her this was the fault of the brewery and not the management who were fighting to get the pub up and running as it should. Obviously we don’t know the full story but it’s a real shame that these basics are going to let the pub down/run it down. We will definitely go again but I hope they can sort out their stock and get the Bird back to what it was.

Very good my friend and I had a very pleasant meal consisting of two steak pies with chips and peas. For £10 The food quality and quantity was really very good indeed, unbeatable value for money. The bar staff were very friendly and helpful. I do well recommended this pub.
