2 carvery’s with 2 half filled pots of gravy. Provided nowhere near enough gravy. Very poor, doubt I’ll order again

paid £9.99 for a carvery and the meat was dry and boiled no flavour 2 pices of every veg one spoonful of stuffing yorkshire puddings dry and like rubber what I got was not worth what I paid at all portion was a kids size rip off

Kids meals were great one carvery and one Mac and cheese and empty plates they get free scoop of Ice cream and the gammon streaks were lovely and had to get a brownie take away for later staff were great

Jenny and Ian created a very welcoming atmosphere and served us very large portions of both the carvery and the cakeaway! Jenny was very upbeat and polite. She brought me directly some more vegetables to my table as I was waiting for some more from the kitchen, she didn’t have to and I really appreciated it. Ian was very friendly and set aside our cakes until we finished our mains. Great service from them both! Thank you!

Birchwood Farm try to do everything, carvery, full menu, deserts and cake aways. Unfortunately, sometimes its better to be brilliant at one things instead of average at everything.

Got served mainly by Ian and it was amazing service. He was very kind and polite, he was talking and having a chat with everyone and having a laugh. He was very kind and very helpful. We came out for tea with the kids and was served at the bar by Ian. Lovely friendly bloke. The food was great. We ordered cake away for afters and wow the portion sizes were more than generous. Ian told us to sit back at our table and he would bring the cake out to us which he did along with bags to take it away. Can't fault the service it was amazing from start to finish.

The food was reasonable for the price, however our party was left very disappointed by the service. After being left waiting by the desk for around 10 mins we were then sent to a table that already had a family seated on it. We had to request high chairs 3 times and when the food did arrive some items were hot where others were just warm. We had asked for the babies meals to be brought out first and they were last to the table. Overall very disappointing and we won't be going back.

I was puzzled on arrival as to why the venue seemed quiet at 4pm on a Friday. All would soon be revealed. On looking at the carvery, the vegetable selection was sparse and looked dry and unappetising so we chose to order off the menu. I chose mixed grill and my partner chose Chicken Tikka Masala. The mixed grill was dry and the meat tasteless to the point where I could not tell which was pork or chicken. My partners meal was burnt and accompanied by a soft poppadom and a hard pitta bread. All in all the food was not pleasant. A plumber who was working within the establishment kept passing as we were eating carrying many pieces of plumbing equipment that looked as if he had been unblocking lavatories. This was also unpleasant when we were trying to eat. Not to be totally nasty about the place, I will say that the staff seemed pleasant and the ambience and music were good. Unfortunately though, after this experience I do feel that I will not be returning to this venue.

Went out for a meal with our baby. The soft play area is meant to be for under 5's. There was close to 15 over 10s and even older kids in the area. Screaming and throwing everything In sight. Do not go if you have an under 5, go elsewhere.

My partner and I decided to go to Birchwood Farm for a meal, I ordered chicken tikka , and my partner ordered a mixed grill. The waiting time was fine and service good. That is where the nice meal ended. I went to try the poppadom and it was soft so soft I could bend it in half, I put that to one side and went to try the naan bread, expecting a nice soft light bread that I could dip into the sauce, disappointment hit again as the naan was rock hard , the only soft part was the very edge . Strike 2. Ok I will just eat the chicken tikka curry, rice and chips , i thought. I picked up a small chip, piece of chicken and a bit of sauce, once in my mouth I thought it tasted odd, but at first couldn’t put my finger on it, I ate a few more bits, each time trying to pick out what this flavour was, then it hit me it was burnt, I checked the bottom of the metal dish and yep there it was a big black burnt bit . So that was the end of that meal. I turned to my partner and asked how his mixed grill was , he said it was very dry and he couldn’t tell which was the pork and which was the chicken. The one star is for the Diet Coke which neither of us could fault. We did have one more thing that put a black mark against the evening, as we were dining there was a plumber walking back and forth to his van ( as he walked swinging in one hand or the other tools or parts he had removed?? Sorry I’m not a plumber, I just dress like one sometimes) we found this very off putting imagining where these different items may have come from. Anyway, needless to say our night out turned into more of a nightmare we won’t be repeating anytime soon.

Been for lunch today- comes across understaffed? Or un efficient working? Attended for carvery, selected meat when carved and plated, was told there was no Yorkshire puddings. They ‘needed to be cooked yet’ and fair enough an apology was given. However wasn’t offered to leave it until Yorkshires came out, it was like we had to just deal with it. The people in the queue behind us, then got offered to come back up if they wanted or to be informed when they came out. Once I overheard this, I asked a staff member if they could get one brought to us when they come out. Then I also asked another staff member the same. We chased it up twice and with one of the staff member that we asked. I even stopped eating my carvery so I was able to have a Yorkshire pudding! However we’d been waiting and my food was getting cold so I continued eating. Once I had finished my meal, I then saw Yorkshires were available as someone nearby had just gone up and got a carvery. No one came to us to alert us/nor brought some. So we got up and left. Wouldn’t return.

Booked table for 12:30 . The service was atrocious we will not be going back. My husbands dinner was cold, son was not impressed with the carvery, they didn't have many vegetables and no gravey. I went to order dessert and there was no one behind the bar serving and the queue was very long. I doubt we'll be going back. Not impressed at all.

Booked on line for main dining area but was sat in kids area. No yorkshire puddings available no stuffing very little turkey left either. Part of the party waited 30 mins but still no puddings or stuffing arrived and dinners had gone cold so had to be replaced. Staff had to be asked to clear tables and were quite rude while doing this and manager never came to see us despite us asking to see them when asked if we wanted to after pointing out problems

We came to Birchwood Farm Wed 15th at 12pm with my husband and mother in law. Excellent service from all the staff (shout out to Donna, lovely lady) I think this is the best carvery in Castleford. Absolutely delicious and served with a smile. Easy to get to toilets and a working and clean disabled toilet which is not always the case in some establishments. Very good value for money too. We will be back.

Spent close to £8 on a ‘Large’ kids meal for my child to receive what looked like 1 spoonful of macaroni cheese, she was still starving afterwards! Food came freezing cold, got the incorrect drink. Would NOT order again

Been tonight for a carvery which was very nice. I ordered at the table using the app and made a mistake. I went to the bar to rectify my mistake and was served by Ian who was lovely, very polite and super helpful. He sorted the issue out for me. Really do appreciate how lovely he was. He is an asset to your business.

Booked a table for breakfast at 10am on arrival we was greeted by a friendly member of staff and was told to sit wherever we wanted, which was nice. We paid for our breakfast, made our hot drinks and had a walk over the the breakfast buffet. There was 2 slices of very very welldone bacon, 4 very over cooked sausages, no eggs, no scrambled eggs, no veg/vegan sausage, no hashbrowns, no mushrooms and only very cold brown toast. After having a five mins wait I decided to ask a member of staff if the food was going to be refreshed and she told me they are on with it now, 5 mins later a member of staff came out of the kitchen with 6 overly cooked eggs, 2 mins later the same member of staff came out with a tray of about 8 slices of very very well-done bacon. I asked if they had any that wasn't well-done and after a conversation about the bacon not being well-done because that's how people like it (maybe only 10% of people prefer well-done bacon) he asked if I would like him to put some bacon in that would be less cooked to which I said yes please if that's OK and how long would it take to which he replied '20 mins' I told him it to bother thank you. 2 mins later the the same member of staff came out with another very very welldone bacon and thus went on every few mins ( the food would have been out quicker if they didn't keep burning everything) I asked a member of staff if it was possible for her to go give them a hand to bring the food out to which she said there are 2 people doing the work in the kitchen, the gentleman that kept bringing the very very weldone food out and the manger who was cooking. In the end I decided to get my money back. The manager came out of the kitchen to make the refund and while making the refund she made her apologies and was very polite. I told her all.my concerns over there being no food and the refilling being very slow at coming leading to it being impossible to have a hot breakfast, all the food being very over cooked to which her reply was to apologise again to to tell me that its hard when it's busy and suppose it is but unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it it was far far from busy with probably what looked like less than 30 people in. The rest of my party (4 of them) still ate there breakfast and all moaned about it as there was never a time when all breakfast items were cooked at once, my wife had a plate of toast and tomatoes, then returned for bacon and egg, finally going to get some mushrooms and hash browns. There was no one point of time in our 60 minute visit that all items were available to create a ‘full breakfast’. One of my party asked when the vegan sausage would be brought out after ordering a vegetarian breakfast and the reply was would you like me to cooked you some? Yes please! 10 mins later 2 sausages came out that were again very very well-done, definitely left in the chip pan for far too long and we crossed our finger that they weren't cooked in the same pan as the pork sausages. On cutting one in half my friend started to eat one and after a few seconds in her mouth she had to spit the sausage out with a screwed up face saying 'that was disgusting!!' Before we left the manager came over to our table and told me that the food is all stocked up and I was more than welcome to go help myself to which I politely declined (I didn't think it right I go eat after being refunded) and thanked her for her very kind offer. While there not eating i noticed 2 other people/groups complaining All this is a shame as whenever anyone talks about being at the birchwood they always say its nice and I've been 5 times now and the last 3 times I've vowed never to go again

Terrible, no gravy, it was stone cold. very poor quality veg , easpecially the roast, they were frozen ones. The meat was very dry, the turkey especially felt like sawdust in the mouth. Child sized amount, dreadful

The food quantity is fantastic and value for money however the quality is hit and miss. Sometimes it’s fantastic, other times it’s underwhelming. On the whole though, I still return and enjoy a carvery.

Atrocious service from beginning to end. We booked for boxing day two months in advance, and had sent our pre-orders. Despite this, they'd run out of one of the starters and it was only midday! We had no idea if to go to the bar to order or expect table service, because not one person came to our table for the entirety of our almost 3 hour visit. We eventually queued for 15 minutes at the bar to find out that the hot drinks machine was not working. We had to go back to the bar to buy the kids some crisps after an hour of waiting for our starters because not one member of staff could tell us how much longer we'd had to wait for the kid's garlic bread. Our starters eventually came out after 1 hour and 20 minutes of waiting. One was missing, despite giving our pre-order to a staff member *again* when we arrived, so we had to wait another 20 minutes. Carvery was mediocre at best. Half of the vegetables had run out, the staff member carving the meat had no idea what he was doing, and the other staff member there seemed more concerned with filling takeaway boxes for justeat orders. The kid's plain pasta mains were brought out 45 minutes after their garlic bread. Despite ordering desserts months in advance, we were told we'd have to wait even longer for our order to be taken *again*. The member of staff we spoke to was extremely rude to us, and my sister came back to the table in tears over how he'd spoken to her. We'd been there for almost 3 hours at this point. With the kids crying, we left to go across the road to find somewhere else to eat dessert. 5 stars to Heavenly Desserts in Xscape for putting a smile on the kid's faces. So disappointed that our boxing day meal turned out like this.

Christmas eve very poor showing Half the beers not on tap. Waited 40 mins for our pre ordered starters to arrive, then instantly served mains. It wasnt even busy but was chaos by the staff Food was average at best, items missing, had to ask, had run out of the pudding as its been popular, although Id ordered it. Poor showing

We had booked a month ago for Christmas eve, having the festive dinner. This was our Christmas dinner instead of having it Xmas day and honestly, I wish we hadn't bothered. Arrived to a not very busy restaurant and seated. Only a handful of tables were taken with people having the same meal as us. Having pre-ordered the entire meal we expected it to flow quite well, but after sitting waiting for over 45 minutes for our starters to arrive we soon realised this was not the case. There only looked to be 2 waitresses, one kept asking us if we had any food yet and in the end gave us a free round of drinks before our starters FINALLY arrived. At this point one of the staff started hoovering around us which hen lasted the whole of our meal time. Not very festive. Luckily we all had the carvery so didn't need to wait for that one and helped ourselves. Unfortunately the pigs in blankets we had to pay extra for weren't cooked and by the time they were, we had all finished our dinners. Nobody come round to clear the table, so we sat with dirty plates for the remainder of our time there, then about half an hour after someone asked about deserts. Again, these were all pre-ordered but we had to say what we had ordered, and one now wasn't available despite this. We waited another half hour before 2 kids ice cream finally made an appearance, leaving our 3rd child without his brownie and adults without puddings. Another 15 minutes past before I lost my temper with staff and called them out for a crap service, spoiling our families Christmas dinner and making us sit there for over 3 hours, keeping my kids there longer than needed on Christmas eve when they wanted to go home to get ready for Santa. The assistant manager knocked some money off the final bill and gave us the remaining puddings to take away (photo attached - definitely weren't worth the almost hour wait!) but honestly, I wouldn't of paid it but we just wanted to leave. Considering there was nobody else there eating when we left, and 9 people there in total just having drinks, I have no idea how they couldn't manage a good service. Wouldn't book here for a special occasion ever again. Only given 1 star because I couldn't not give any.

Terrible. Booked well in advance for Boxing Day and submitted orders and paid £50 deposit. On arrival at the time we booked for the table wasn’t even ready or set. No one explained how to order drinks or if the food would be coming to the table. We were sat at the table for over an hour before anyone bothered to come to the table, had to wait even longer for the starters. Staff then said the booking system was broken so they didn’t have the order we booked in advance at all so we had to give them the entire order again. After over an hour and a half we got our starters; but they missed one; then had to wait another half an hour for the last starter (how hard is it to warm up some cheese bites?) Then took another hour for people to get mains course, we had children that had to wait for plain pasta (why does it take that long to prepare plain pasta) After 2 and a half hours we then asked about the dessert and were told they would come and take our order (which was supposed to have been ordered in advance), and we were met with rude replies and made to feel like an inconvenience for asking. Also the hot drinks machine was broken and they were out of tortilla chips for the kids which again, were supposed to have been ordered in advance. I understand they might be short staffed but the order was made way in advance, staff were extremely unhelpful and no one came to the table even once. We were made to feel like an inconvenience for finding a staff member asking about the food. When we arrived we were one of the first tables to be seated but it still took over 1 hour and 30 minutes to get any starters. We noticed all of the other tables were waiting ages for their food too, and other people were complaining. The staff member was extremely rude and just wanted to get rid of us in the end and said he was ‘fed up’ of talking to our table (maybe because not one staff member had come to serve us at all) and wiped the bill for the meal in order to get rid of us. It was not about the money and would have happily paid, we just wanted to the meal we booked well in advance and to have not waited for 1 hour and 30 minutes before getting any food.

For the money we paid the service was totally rubbish. Got there at 2 pm and after 50 minutes STILL waiting for out starters. Callum our server was totally out of his depth, he spent more time walking around with a clip board or empty handed. We received no communication about the delays. We know the staff were struggling but it’s no excuse not to keep us informed of the delay. Over all I feel we haves been robbed of our Christmas dinner and a large amount of my hard earned money. Zero stars and some bad reviews coming from a lot of your customers for today.

Delivery was good - shame about the food. Dry, end cuts of meat - Roasties like stones - No veggie pie or Yorkshire Pudding with the veggie carvery, just loads of cold new potatoes instead. If we had been in the restaurant, we would have sent the food back. Won't be ordering again.

We called in for the first time on Sunday for breakfast after our usual carvery was basically queueing out of the door. The atmosphere was really calm and relaxing, music in the background not too loud. Staff all pleasant and smiling. Lots of space, lots of free tables. We went for the buffer breakfast, choice was fine, and everything tasted great, food not greasy and piping hot. Tea and coffee station fully stocked. The bacon was very crisp which was perfect for me, maybe not for some. Overall a really lovely relaxing Sunday morning breakfast, we will return.

Then served 'bits' of ham...40% fat.. and had to ask not to be served bits of beef instead of a slice, then had to wait for server to go get some Yorkshire puddings. Carrots virtually raw, sprouts and cauliflower mush, gravy congealed. Would I recommend NO. Would I go again NO. Not busy

I attended Birchwood this evening with my daughter and grandson. Initially there was a slight issue with my meal. I spoke with Ian who swiftly addressed the issue with a caring and professional attitude and provided the highest example of customer service. As a result of Ians intervention I enjoyed a superb roast beef dinner from the carvery. Great service from Ian and his staff and very good value for money.

Poor food, average service. We had a notice on our table saying that we had a 2 hour limit on our table. We waited almost 1 hour for food to be served from ordering which left us around 40 minutes to eat and leave. We ordered 3 x Chicken Combo meals and all 3 were dry and lukewarm when served, the bbq sauce helped a bit. The cheese and bacon burger came out with the cheese not melted and was cold, my wife requested it to be warmed up and the cheese melted. I got pretty much through my meal and there was a 2-3 inch long black hair on my plate under the chips. I complained to the waitress when collecting the plates and mentioned the hair and all I got was a 'sorry about that' with no further action and walked off. There was also another complaint of a hair in food from a table nearby as we'd sat down. The pub was busy and the staff looked run down but standards shouldn't be slipping like that.

Ordered pie , mash & pea carrots with gravy. Pie was so over cooked it was dried out and inedible. No gravy. Husband got carvery , no Yorkshire pudding arrived. All food was stone cold & they kept changing the arrival time to later & later . Won’t be ordering again

Where to begin, arrived at 16:00 for a family meal which we had a 2 hour slot, I took us 25 minutes to be served at the bar due to there only being 1 member of staff on the bar at peak time. Ordered food which half turned up within 40 minutes of ordering but some of us were waiting nearly 1 and half hours for food, the last lot of food got brought out to the tables at 17:50. The tables weren’t cleaned before had and some of us had to wipe them down ourselves, Myself I had a mixed grill and asked for my steak medium rare, it turned up well done and very dry, 2 others in our party asked for lasagne which came out burnt as well as the garlic bread, they messed up on a lot of orders and we were told they were understaffed, the quality of the food was atrocious hardly any of the food was eaten, I can honestly say I will not be going back there and will certainly NOT be recommending the place to others, honestly the worst restaurant experience I’ve had.

Went again today to give them a second chance. Service when you go off the full breakfast was terrible. Waited 40 minutes for my wife's avocado with poached eggs. Last week we got fed up of waiting and left with a refund. We won't be calling again. The service is terrible.......

Even the driver was complaining that he was sat 40min at the restaurant. Completely unprepared to handle orders and cold. I appreciate its a carvery but feels like a "whats left at the end of the night" quality.

Took 90 mins from order to delivery. By that time it was cold. The meat part of the carvery was tiny, the biggest bit in each portion were the potatoes. The pigs in blanket that we paid extra for, must have been left under the heat lamp all day because they were black in colour and dried up. Stringy beans and soggy puddings that we daren’t eat. The quality of this takeaway was appalling! This place is rather nice when you visit in person but don’t order for delivery!
