Billy Budds in North Devon

Dropped in with our dog for a weekday lunch, immediately felt at ease. Tasty food, generous portions and a great pint. The service was excellent, they went out of their way to help with my lost purse! Look forward to eating here the next time we're in Croyde 😁

Came here today for a birthday meal. Had buffalo chicken burger and chilli dog both with fries. Sounds quite average but honestly it was out of this world delicious. Service was really quick and staff were friendly and helpful. We had our dog with us and they gave him a huge bowl of water too. Wine and cider delicious too! Will be back again soon!

Spent a few nights in here eating and drinking, really nice laid back vibe with sports on tv. The food is mostly pizza, burgers and dogs, we sampled a fair bit of the menu and can’t fault it.

Straightforward pub serving good food and drinks. Friendly staff and decent value. One of the few pubs where you don't need to book so adds to the flexibility.

Great pub with takeaway facilities. We had four rounds of nachos to take out. They were delicious and substantial. Well worth an order and a pint while you wait is great

Staff were super nice especially the guy from Manchester! Great selection of drinks and nice to have local spirits. Pulled pork natchos are a must and the rest of the food was great. Lovely atmosphere and place to spend the day / night.

Really enjoyed our late lunch today, great pizzas. Tasty and well made. Lovely pub environment and friendly staff.

Friends had various burgers, which were served with fries and slaw. I wasn't that hungry, so went for a portion of cheesey chips. Unfortunately, the image i had of these in my mind didn't match with what arrived at the table. They turned out to be a large bowl of fries with squirty cheese on top. Im sure some people will have loved these, but not me. However, the meals had by friends were hot, plentiful and yummy.

Good pub but food was poor although it was served very quickly. Pizza dough was under cooked with too much ‘plastic’ cheese. Hog dog was excellent.

Really great bar. Charlie was so welcoming, friendly and funny. A really great atmosphere and somewhere that felt so comfortable to be.

We ate food here on 3 occasions and I would say it was good, and I was pleasantly surprised. The menu is slightly limited in terms of options (it’s burgers/fries/nachos basically) and it’s not exactly posh cuisine, but it’s lovely food and brilliant that you don’t have to book. The nachos and hot dogs were lovely and the portions are HUGE. I would definitely recommend checking this place out for food.

Stayed in Croyde for the week and was told that Billy Budds was a good place. That recommendation wasn't wrong, great little pub that was extremly friendly and was great being able to take our dog in. Will certainly be back when back in Croyde.

Overpriced for the area. No classic pub grub (just burgers and nachos). A male member of staff was very rude to our group.Unfortunately some of us stated to eat the food we had ordered after the event that we had paid for (which was not worth the wait if you don’t like cremated burgers). The rest of the group that left straight away and went to The Manner House Inn who were very accommodating of our group. Don’t waste your time here!

We ended up eating here twice in a weekend. First night we had pizzas these were not too bad, a touch too much rocket but that’s a personal preference. We had natchos which were amazing, only thing I did find it was missing was guacamole, not an issue for us we brought some with us!

We stayed last minute in Croyde as part of our road trip and went to Billy Budds without a reservation. Plenty of seating, in a clean and relaxed atmosphere. Ordered at the bar, had three texas burgers and a large pulled pork nachos, 2 pints...

Good food, great atmosphere for the women's football final and a great pint of beer. Service very quick, would recommend.

Sat outside buzzing Billy buds in the garden around the back. Lovely atmosphere, had pizzas which were delicious. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Good beers and lovely cold rose too.

Nice outside seating and a great gluten free burger. Only a couple of quid extra to make the burger a double too (12oz instead of 6oz). Fries good and crispy. Drinks were expensive but not sure if this is just normal for croyde!

Are here twice during our 3 night stay in croyde. Great service, chilled atmosphere and great food. Menu is quite simple/small but what they do do is excellent and service is quick. Defo recommend

Only had a drink. Close quite early and don't allow anyone in after 9.30pm service quite slow and to get ur bill but just like Thatch it's a very busy and popular place in the village

We have been nervous about venturing out to pubs/restaurants as a result of Covid conditioning and the fact that being spontaneous about going out to eat/drink doesn't always work these days. We'd been in Croyde all week and enjoying the lovely takeway stall on our campsite, but it was our last night of the holiday and we needed a sense of occasion. Many places were indeed booked up, but Billy Budds offered a 'queue up and 2 hr slot' system. They have a large outdoor area aswell as a huge festival sized teepee and we were given a choice. The food was fabulous and everyone enjoyed their options - pizza or burgers in our case. Two hours is plenty enough to enjoy a meal and even a few drinks. The staff were lovely and all in all, this was a great experience.

We actually wanted to go to The Thatch, which is next door but there was a sign on the door saying closed due to COVID. So, we went to Billy Budds which was serving outside. Couldn't fault the waitress who seated us and made sure we got the spot we wanted - nice and shady (it was a very hot day).My husband ordered a burger which he said was very nice. I ordered a fish finger burger. However, the fish fingers had been cooked for far too long and were much too crunchy. It also came with salad, which wasn't mentioned on the menu and I didn't want and hardly any sauce tartare, which was a shame as it would have helped with the crunchy fish fingers.Also, to go to the Ladies, you had to trek through the pub, only to be told that the pub ones were closed and you had to use the Disabled one outside. I do understand that toilets may sometimes need to be closed but it would have helped if there had been a few more signs to help you find them as they were tucked away behind some outbuildings at the far end. I feel sorry for anyone with mobility problems or in a wheelchair.

Having been to billy budds on previous holidays we had to visit again! It didn’t disappoint! Male member of staff seated us and made sure where he was seating people there was enough shade in the blazing sun! Great to have a max searing time of 2 hours to ensure people don’t stay too long. Food was amazing and the guy who seated us and took our our even sorted out take away boxes for us as we didn’t realise how large the large nachos would be! Great service and super friendly staff. We will be back!

The food was okay however I paid £18 for a burger and lemonade. Although prices is high in that area there were better places down the road for that money. The manager that evening had his own covid rules. Groups were split up even though they was with the current limit. Mask were asked to been worn outside however staff put them pull down when outside. Had many recommendations for this place but didn’t live up to them.

Visited Billy Budds as always on our yearly holiday to Croyde. Food and drink was lovely as usual and reasonably priced, no more expensive than anywhere else in Croyde. However having said that, we were really disappointed when we arrived to find that the lovely big play area is gone! I understand they wanted more outdoor seating but they have a massive tipi in the car park that is a new addition. We used to call in every evening for a well deserved beer and let the little one play and make friends. We will be back before we go home but not as often as before. It’s a shame as it was a great place for families ☹️

Went for dinner and drinks ,Staff were lovely and super attentive, the pizzas were delicious I recommend the Italian stallion!

Visiting the beautiful Croyde Bay and stopped for an Alfresco lunch. The waitress who greeted us advised that by law masks were needed to even walk to the table, from outside , remaining outside and they we could only remove the mask once seated. We did not have a mask and offered to leave, In a completely open air environment, this “rule “ should either apply to ALL customers or not. We were made to feel like criminals for not having a mask. We then sat outside and proceeded to watch whilst 20 or so more customers were escorted to their outdoor dining table WITHOUT masks!!! It would be fair to say that staff should treat all customers the same and not make them feel uncomfortable upon arrival. We made it very clear that we would not be visiting the toilets or inside the building!To add, the waitress with the blonde hair was VERY friendly and welcoming ( in contrast to the waitress who greeted us).Food - dirty fries are great, limited menu if you are trying to be healthy!

Visiting the beautiful Croyde Bay, June 2021, we stopped for a drink and bite to eat. The waitress who greeted us made us feel like criminals for not having masks, although we made it very clear that we would not be moving around outside or visiting the toilet. The waitress proceeded to tell us that it was the law to wear masks even when outside until seated, we offered to leave! We then proceeded to watch as 20 or so guests during our stay were then seated to various outdoor tables ALL wearing no masks!! It would be fair to say that whilst trying to offer an safe experience ALL guests should be greeted and treated the same and not made to feel like criminals!! On a plus the waitress with the blonde hair was one of the most friendly and helpful waitresses we have encountered in Croyde in the contrary to the waitress who greeted us. Limited menu for those wanting a healthy choice, large portions and good location.

I have been here many times and will definitely go again. Ordered the Nachos which were fantastic - great portion and great taste! My friend, however, was less wise and ordered the veggie burger. Safe to say it did not agree with her and she was throwing up till the early hours of the morning - not ideal for camping! Nonetheless it is worth the mention that she said that despite her food being dodgy it was well worth it and would do it all over again. So, if your visiting and want a veggie burger just maybe do a wee risk assessment/ sleep with a bin handy. There was also the issue of a lipstick mark on my glass but that was an easy fix as the friendly and helpful staff just got me a new one (with extra wine!!)All in all, I really enjoy it here and it’s a great place to visit whilst in Croyde.

Was walking through the village and we popped by for a pint in the sun. We then seen the nachos coming out and as usual we had to go for some! They were on top form, great flavour and a cracking portion I must say! Will be heading back again in a few months.

Five of us sat in the huge tipi at the rear of the pub. There were plenty of welcoming, friendly staff on hand to take your drink and food orders. Will be going back for sure.

Went to Billy Budds for a drink then a few days later went for lunch. Excellent food, large portions. Really friendly staff and all safety measures were in place to reassure and keep us safe. Well impressed. Will definitely visit again when next in Croyde Bay. Well done everyone and thank you.

Such an amazing place to have a drink or eat, we did both! Staff were incredibly friendly, drinks and food arrived in no time at all considering on how busy it was!! Just have to add that food was very very delicious!

Arrived with no table reservation but were welcomed by friendly staff and seated straight away. QR code on table to view menu. Order taken by staff. Drinks and food arrived very quickly even though the terrace was very busy as it was a beautiful warm sunny afternoon. Great Covid safe set up, one way systems in place for entry and exit. Everything explained how it works to be Covid safe by staff when you arrive. Very friendly and helpful staff. Burgers were really good and tasty. We will visit again when in the area.

Sat for 2 hours managed to get 2 pints and a chicken burger for way over what should have been charged for the quality. Poor service. Seemed like a money making venture rather than a pub. Bit of a joke really.

Wasabi burger and fries , great fries and great service but literally 2oz of chicken in my burger - not enough to even cover half the bun , seriously for £14 that’s just just taking advantage !! Also the proprietors need to google “brioche” as painting a burger bun brown does not make it brioche !

Thankfully the weather was really kind on us as we sat outside the Billy Buds. The staff and set up was key to how it worked with the current restrictions and they did their best to make it safe for all (if only some guests felt obliged to conform).Whilst some place have had to improvise, it felt like this was good enough anyway and we would have enjoyed sitting outside. The was a tepee as well, which looked cool, but we were okay.The staff weren't helpful, the drinks had lots of choice and the food was really well cooked and presented. One of us had the chicken burger and the other the double Billy Burger. They were fabulous, cooked well and hot. Very enjoyable.Overall was a nice experience in this small village.

Ordered two rounds of drinks and food. Drinks came, and after over an hour food didn't. So sat freezing cold (no heaters) for no reason.Same waitress with the pink hair who took the order in the first place was blissfully unaware, and gave zero cares. Pretty poor table service start to finish, but it was busy so what do they care about my opinion?Manager offered free chips as gratitude and was polite, but the evening was ruined.You'd think with places reopening and trying to get back on their feet they'd up their game, but clearly not. Food looked nice as well.... for those who actually received it.

Visited to get a takeout. Waited by front door to be let in and a lad walked past the door 3 times without acknowledge us which was a bad start (found out he was new) but then someone came over. Asked if ok to sit outside while we waited but then offered us a table. Ordered our food and drinks while we waited. Pleasant atmosphere, nice and cosy. Hubby had burger which did not take long to do and that he said was ok. Would visit again.

Really enjoyed dropping in for dinner on our last night, nice table in front of the fire, friendly welcome and service by staff who work very hard to ensure you feel relaxed eating out in the current COVID compliant world we live in. I just had the classic 6oz burger and it was superb, proper quality local beef as promised on the menu and a generous portion of french fries didn't last long! If you're really hungry you can go for a 12oz. I will return on my next visit for sure. Highly recommended Note will be closing after half term hols for the Winter so if you're local drop in sooner rather than later for some great food - take a look at the menu, you'll feel hungry pretty quickly!

We visited Billy Budds twice during our stay in Croyde, what a great find. A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with great service. Food was delicious especially the pizzas. The food for children was goof too, great quality and selection. Would highly recommend if you are in Croyde.

During these weird times, this was still a happy place to eat. We had a table for 6, no need to book just turn up. Service was very good, efficient and polite and food was good, does what it says on the tin. Been twice in a week, consistently good for both service and food.

Lots of heaters in the garden in between Budds and the Thatch now. A nice quiet drink on a Sunday evening while keeping warm.Sanitiser provided and details taken on entry. Table service for ordering and delivering drinks.Service was good.We only drank, no food.If you go to Croyde, support the local restaurants, bars, and shops. Don't bring all your own and then just sit in a caravan at Ruda all week/weekend.Hopefully see you next July/August.

We came for lunch while camping in the area. We sat under the ‘dome’ in the outdoor area. They had clearly thought carefully about how to keep things safe, so although the ladies loo was abit of a walk from the seated area I can see why they arranged it that away. The pizza was excellent, though the cheesy chips had non-melted grated cheese on top which isn’t what I had expected. Good service.

Visited as a family. All Covid precautions in place, seating outside, the rule of six observed. Good social distancing. The menu was reduced but we all found something. The food was good. The staff were friendly. We visited a few times for drinks only, this worked well, a two hour time slot. Nice to watch the world game by.

Good location in the centre of Croyde. All seating is outside so weather dependent. The food was good but they had a reduced menu so choice was quite limited. Pizza was good. No pudding options though.

We came here originally for drinks then ended up ordering nachos as well. The food and drinks were really nice, the tables well spaced and atmosphere good. Service was not the quickest but it was busy.

We were delighted to see clear social distancing measures in place upon arrival; and that the staff were clearly taking this seriously as well. Once we were seated we quickly ordered our starters and mains quickly. They arrived and were delicious - we would recommend the chicken and bacon pizza! The team were often making sure that we were well looked after and keen to assist. Special mention must go to Imi. She was a great help and was kind enough to offer some great advice when asked, completely out of the blue. 10/10 for Imi - great job! If you are in the area and would like a place to unwind - especially fresh off the beach - then we would certainly recommend Billy Budds. We will be back!

Absolutely love Billy Budds and always give it a visit when in Croyde. Their precautions regarding Covid are excellent and have plenty of outdoor seating available. They even have a massive dome to sit in if the weather is not so good. Luckily, the weather is beautiful at the moment so can sit outside and enjoy the sun. Great place.

Only Ok at the moment. We sat outside which was nice. Service was very friendly but slow and a bit uncoordinated. We got half our main courses quickly then waited 15 mins for the rest. Sadly not a patch on the Blue Groove.

We were really looked after well by Nathan. Great customer service. Cider was decent aswell. They really have the covid/social distancing thing right. Unlike the Stoneleigh Tea rooms

Staff were really helpful, pleasant and efficient, was quite busy so a long wait for food, food was limited but I’m assuming because of covid, basically just burgers or pizza, nice garden, it was okay but I wouldn’t go back.

Looks a great pub. The staff were great and handled the pressure of seating & serving really well. Menu is extremely limited. Food didn’t come up to much. Was very ordinary, boring and expensive. Shame because is a lovely setting. Would definitely visit again and try a more extensive menu. Beer was excellent!

Had a great three night stay here with a wonderful room. The only downside was that it was a visit during the Covid 'crisis' so it had it's difficulties. Trying to find a table at some times was very frustrating, why the oub was not open with social distancing, heaven knows. The staff were brilliant and worked very hard to try to make our visit as nice as possible, so thank you one and all. You could get a drink in The Thatch before 4pm, but after that it was table bookings only, again, very frustrating. But again the staff were brilliant and bent over backwards to help. So if you visit whilst the crazy CV19 restrictions are in place, be warned, and book The Thatch!

We stopped here for a quick little lunch. During covid they helped us really well. Tables were cleaned each time and online menus. The food was great, we had burgers, veg pizza and Nachos. I dropped 1 star for bringing the wrong order of veggie burger instead of the pizza. They fixed it for us as quick as they could and we're very polite. Feel bag about dropping a star really.

Stopped here after hiking from woolacombe for a bite to eat. Had the cheese nachos and a beer - nachos were fine, not the best I've had and certainly not the worst! Strange note to have guacamole on them?! Did the job, nicely full staff were friendly and efficient, even with their covid measures.

Great Nachos, well worth a try, drinks were good too! Staff a bit slow, but this is because they are all a bit young but not too bad, well worth a visit!

Great stop for a catch up with friends for a social drink and bite to eat, food was good and staff friendly. Had to queue for around 20minutes even just for a drink but overall a decent place.

Visited for a drink, there was a q which was to be expected as it was outside seating only, it was raining and had been raining all day. The seating area had at least 3 tables empty for around 10/15 mins and no one being sat at them, staff member comes to us and the people in front to say it will be another 15 minutes to get a seat , husband points out the tables that are empty and asks why no one was being sat there, they responded are you happy to sit at a wet table? Now as said it had been raining all day so the table was always wet and was never going to dry it had an umbrella so it was as good as it was going to get, we said yeah and sat down alongside all the other people sitting at wet tables!! Random, but drinks where fine.

Pleasant enoughWe had a large pizza, cheesy chips, veggie nachos and meat nachos. It was all pleasant enough. It didn’t rock our worlds but it was nice enough. We ate at Blue Groove the night before and the selection and quality was better. The staff at Billy Buds were friendly enough, but kind of looked like they’d had enough (fair enough given everything that’s gone on this year). I’d like to go back when they’re providing their usual fuller menu.

BB’s have really thought out how to keep visitors safe. They were attentive, food was lovely and everything was clearly explained. If you are on holiday around here I would highly recommend.

Visited on a rainy Wednesday night during the pandemic. Queuing system worked well and we only waited about 15 minutes. Staff were friendly and attentive. My wife and I both had large chilli beef nachos, which were fantastic. Limited menu, but that's par for the course right now. Really impressed, would recommend as a couple or a family.

We have just come back from a week long stay in Croyde and we used this pub for drinks several times. Due to the Cov-id situation there is a queuing situation taking place. As the weather was so good we sat outside on each visit. The tables were cleaned very well before anyone was allowed to be seated. The staff were polite and attentive. If I have any complaints it's the prices they are charging. I totally understand the business is suffering due to the Cov-id situation, I also appreciate that this area of the country doesn't necessarily attract tourists all year round, so the work will be seasonable. But I also think the prices need to be realistic at all times. If I was visiting the place again I would use this pub for a drink. Although we didn't eat here the food did look delicious when it was presented to other gusts on the next table. There isn't a play area for the kids that is open, but that's because of the virus going around.

We came here twice during our stay and enjoyed a few nice cold beers and some chips out in the terrace area. We also had a drink in their dome like marquee. The table service was quick and it was a good atmosphere. It is quite a popular bar so you may have to queue for one of the tables.

Even with the current restrictions the service was good, the safety arrangements were ex ellant and the food and drink was both delicious and served promptly. It was a limited menu but this didn't stop us from enjoying the visit (X2). Good staff, good food and good atmosphere

Firstly, can I stress, the service by the young girls was faultless! So this review in no way reflects their attitude which was both friendly and courteous. However, the food...Understandably considering the current situation there was a reduced menu, but it was basically burger or pizza. And if you are going to do so, at least make it value for money. Vegetarian burgers at £13.50!Come on guys, they weren’t anything special, arguably I could do better at home. Really disappointing especially when served with one sachet of sauce etc. We want to support you at testing times but at least make an effortDC

Visited this pub several times over a holiday in Croyde. It is great for a drink and has a decent garden. Staff are very friendly and COVID-secure measures are good.The food is outrageously disappointing. The menu is limited (likely due to covid) and overpriced. The quality of the food is poor and the prices are expensive. Burgers (£13) are shockingly bad, nanchos also overpriced and pizzas very average. Avoid eating here, there are better options in Croyde.

This is the second occasion we have been, the first was good (10 years ago) but this time poor. Conflicting advice about group size when calling and then arriving at venue. Slow service (including drinks) and very very bland over price food (children's fish bites awful mad overcooked), plus limited veggie options. Despite limited options in Croyde, we won't be returning to this venue, they are clearly making the most of having a monopoly with a poor overall service.

Gorgeous beer garden! Visited post-lockdown. This place had the most gorgeous beer I’ve ever seen! There is a massive dome in which you can sit, drink and eat in and it’s got such a lovely warm vibe about it. This dome is warm, well lit and even has pretty fairy lights all inside of it- I loved being there and would go there again in a heartbeat! Went twice and a 5 day span and wish I could’ve gone more. It’s hygienic, full of social distancing rules and hand sanitising stations and the staff respect your personal space whilst you are on the grounds of this pub and also when you are queuing to get a table. The way you order here is table service and accessing the menu in which is attached to the table with a QR code. The staff are lovely and helpful and for that, I can only speak highly of this place!

After a long drive from Surrey we hit the waves on Croyde beach. Working up quite the apatite we headed to Billy Budds filled with excitement. The food soon crushed our excitement. Pizza’s were undercooked and tasted shop bought. Nachos were cold and tased a lot like disappointment. Burger looked good and I have it on good authority it tasted good. All in all, 2/5.

Had a socially distant meal & drink here, the systems they have in place made us feel safe and relaxed. The staff are amazing going out of their way to help and answer the questions we had. The food was top notch and served quickly. Can’t fault it! They have the tastiest ice in north Devon ;)

We went to billy buds during ate visit to croyde , we had been before last year and enjoyed it , we were a little bit worried that it wouldn’t be so good because of all the changes due to Covid , but we were pleasantly surprised , it was super organised and we were made to feel very safe , and enjoyed are two hours with u food and drink superb , staff were amazing and made us feel very comfortable , loved the dome , can’t wait to return next year xx

Super informal and friendly staff, feels really COVID safe with outdoor and in marquee eating. Lots of sanitiser available. 6 max at table and 2 hour limit, but drinks & food easily done in the 2 hours. Table service for drink & food, menu limited to burgers, nachos and pizzas, all good and tasty.Veggie & vegan availableBeers good - Thatchers Gold & Korev - great stuff.

Our first visit to Billy Budds coincided with their reopening after lockdown measures were relaxed. Staff were really amiable and followed the appropriate guidelines – perhaps a little rusty as some orders came to our table when they should’ve gone elsewhere, but we can let that slide, of course! It’s just nice to see people out and about once again.We had a round of beverages made up of Korev pints and soft drinks and sat in the sunny beer garden (there was a large dome available too!). All in all, a really positive experience.

Stayed in Croyde and eat here a few times. Really good food (amazing chicken wings), a really good pint and amazing staff - very friendly. Would highly recommend and will return. Cheers to all, Dom.

We have been coming to Croyde for over 10 years and Billy Budds is our favourite pub! Great for everyone all ages. Friendly staff always on hand. Great entertainment whether live or on TV. Fab food menu! Kids love the pool table. No holiday is complete without a visit there!

Went for a drink at billy budd nice pub in a beautiful village. Good choice of beers but thought I'd have a pint of Heineken nearly fell off my stool £5.20. I'd expect to pay that for peroni but really Heineken in wetherspoons is a couple of quid. Food prices so if you got a few quid I recommend it but on a budget big no no

Had many a Rattler Cider on our week away...nice pub good play area and good food.......just love everything about Croyde
