I do not often write reviews but because of the experience I had, I wanted to do so. The service was such a pleasure. In particular, the manager Carl was so polite, courteous, affable, always smiling and happy to spend a few minutes checking you were happy and to ask how we were. It was such a pleasure to have someone provide such engagement with you that I have had for a long time. Most places you go to you get the brief quick check up to see if everything is alright (as it usually is mandatory to do so by the place) which is often curt and less engaging. This time Carl provides a breath of fresh air and should be recognised for doing so. So do think again about going to any coffee chain in St Albans and enjoy a pleasant time at Bills in their very nice refurbished place in the centre. If Carl is working, all the better.

Whatever you do don't order pancakes with Bill's using the JustEat app! Every time I have ordered pancakes I don't have a good experience. JustEat have poor customer service. Some highlights of what I've experienced are cold, hard food that is inedible. Incorrect order - I ordered the chocolate and got the bacon version. And the quantities are not what you're paying for (breaking the law here). Even then I was refused a refund! Astounding honestly. I will be deleting the App and not eating at Bill's brick and mortar again. I remember years ago they were teribble. No change there.

It's the perfect environment to enjoy some tasty food with little ones. There are no airs and graces. You feel like you can relax and enjoy a meal amongst other families. There is a wide variety on the menu for both adults and kids. The food is super tasty and is delivered to the table quickly. We had brilliant service throughout. We would also like to recognise the manager who was extremely helpful.

Very attentive staff, seated very quickly, they knew it was my birthday and offered me a drink which was a nice touch. I like the new lounge bit, feels a lot more open and relaxed. The food was ok. The staff were the star of the show.

Food is good but let down with the service. Wasn’t even busy when we arrived yet took a while before anyone came over to take our order. They’d seen us but obviously would rather not do anything. Staff looked like they really couldn’t be bothered. No enthusiasm whatsoever. Shame as before the refurb the staff were fantastic, always smiled and were nice. This new lot need training in hospitality. Shame.

Had a lovely dinner and drinks on the last night before we went into tier 3! Had amazing food and drinks but even if the food hadn’t been up to scratch, we had the most amazing server called Liv - she made us feel so comfortable and happy and would really recommend Bills solely because of her! Me and my partner came to Bill’s on the Friday the 4th of December. After waking in we had to wait few minutes to be acknowledge by the manageress with blond hair who was too busy browsing the internet. After receiving very cold welcome we have been sited and menus have been dropped on the table and she stormed off without saying who is our waiter or even offering water. After about 20 minutes sitting there and being ignored by all the waiters I have finally managed to grab someone’s attention to order drinks. After drinks arrived we had to grab someone’s attention to take our food order. Food arrived very quickly and tasty. Unfortunately our waiters tried to serve us mains while we were eating starters!. I have refused and food have arrived later nice and tasty. While we were eating our food we could see that all the waiters were just chatting to each other’s and where not looking after customers. Out of 3 managers 2 males one girl only one (short male with foreign accent) was running around and trying to make everyone’s happy other tall manager and manageress where chatting and browsing web on the front. I have been big fun of Bills for many years but after entire team of good and experienced people left they have clearly dropped their standards lower than Mc Donald’s. Shame !!!

We have always frequented the st.albans bills and despite the late bookng we managed to get a table! Everyone was working so hard, they were all moving so quickly, but they still managed to have a smile on thier face! The managers checked in on us make sure everything was okay, and our server kristen was lovely!Thank you for a lovely last evening... see you in december!!

The service we received was terrible we ordered two cocktails the espresso martini way too strong and the Bills Collins tasted like very watered down lemonade. The food we waited 50 minutes for I understand they were busy but I ordered sweet potato fries and bacon on my burger and I got normal fries and no bacon. My friend ordered eggs benedict and Mac and cheese as he was half way through his food he found a hair in his food which is not acceptable anyway but especially with everything going on at the moment with COVID overall was very disappointed.

Came here on a hot day. Really nice place to walk around and plenty to do there. Trampolines, crazy golf at extra costs. Parks and lakes and to the scenery. Nice coffee shop there too which also sells ice creams.

We really enjoyed our meal out at Bill’s.All the COVID regs were complied with. Plus they took your temperature when you go in. And there was hand sanitiser on each individual table. This made us feel more comfortable dining out in the pandemic. Naturally we also scanned the QR Code, as we always do everywhere. The staff were friendly, polite and came across really well. Service was fast and the food was interesting and tasty. There is a good selection of drinks too. The seating and decor are well thought through. Well done Bill’s.

Been here a couple of times and the service is very poor. Food is great, no complaints there but the service is so slow. It took forever for our drinks to arrive, waitresses seem like they’re new and don’t know what they’re doing and no one asks you if you’d like another drink/any sauces etc. Then they have the cheek to add a service charge onto the bill! Not that impressed.

I have never been so pleased with service in a restaurant!! Our waitress Daisy was the most amazing and accommodating server I have ever encountered!! She was an all round delight and extremely patient as well as extraordinarily efficient! The food was phenomenal and was made even better with the smile it was bought over with!! The best all round experience we’ve had in ages will 100% be coming back soon!! The COVID-19 measures put in place were above and beyond and made us all feel safe and well looked after. Would recommend to everyone.

A friend booked Bill's for a meal out and I agreed to give it a go having had a negative experience a few years ago and hadn't been since. It really hadn't improved and the problems were the same. Inattentive service, had to ask repeatedly for water, white wine was tepid, food took over 30 minutes and the person (who I think was the manager) gave us our food and raced off without offering sauces etc. We had to wave at our waitress to get attention which was greeted with eye rolling. I noticed that other people eating there had issues. St Albans has a range of excellent places to eat out. You can do so much better than Bill's.

I don't know how I've never gone to a Bill's before, but I wish I had.My wife and I went for a lunch and both had the Beetroot Wellington, which was incredibly tasty, followed by the rhubarb crumble, which was delicious. There were many other dishes on the menu we could easily have gone for so it wasn't an easy choice!What struck us most was the sheer variety of non-alcoholic drinks, which puts most of the pubs in St Albans to shame. I had the peach and ginger TRIP and the Kombucha Dry Dragon.The Covid protocols were also excellent and we felt completely comfortable.Will definitely come again!

Brought the family in to bills for nice meal and we were delighted to see even more precautions taken than the last time we ventured in. All staff were wearing their masks properly, and I could see staff making an effort to keep social distancing active. It made us feel so safe and comfortable. We were taken to our table by a very friendly gentleman, who explained the set menu to us. Roddi our waiter was great, helped us with everything we needed! Everyone was so kind and polite, and the food was perfect.The flower pot was amazing!!

Been going to Bills since they opened and always been happy with the quality of food and generally excellent service however yesterday was extremely disappointing , the food was virtually cold, portions were noticeably smaller than usual and the service was not up to the recent standards, an all round disappointing experience, not sure we will be returning.

On arrival temperature was taken which was good and reassuring. However, not one member of staff had a mask on or gloves. Was seated at a dirty table. Mentioned it to waitress who rubbed it over with a damp cloth. No antibac spray in sight. When mentioned to the manager he said "it needed a good scrub". But that was when we were leaving. Service was poor. Waited ages for our cold coffees to be brought to us. Longer for breakfast. Food was cold too. Pancakes stodgy and no syrup. When asked for more syrup it was brought over in the tiniest dish. When my friend mentioned to waitress she would not have that again. She said "fair enough". Think restaurant training needed. We will not be back.

I visited Bills tonight with a friend for the Eat Out Help Out scheme. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant and the service we received. Food was absolutely spot on and the service was incredible. Everyone was so on the ball. The manager was very welcoming at the front of the restaurant and our server Isabella was incredible. She went out her way to make sure everything was perfect for us. She was so smiley, and a perfect waitress. Hats off to her. Thank you so much for everything, will definitely be back soon!

Disappointing food and mediocre service. Noisy to the extent of interfering with normal table conversation. Boneless beef was warm and a solid lump. It certainly did not fall apart easily when cut. A complaint was made and a visit from the Manager was promised. No offer made to replace or reheat the meal. The appearance of the Manager didn’t materialise until a second request was made. No sincerity in the apology- the excuse being that the restaurant was busy. No discount either.Our final bill for four was £200. It was not more than average value for money.

We went for brunch for my mums birthday and the staff couldn’t do enough for us. They offered us our desired seating but due to the weather suggested an alternative seating area. The food was delicious and the staff where brilliant, friendly and helpful which I have found is hard to come by (especially in the last few months). Thanks for a great morning, it was nice to feel like things are starting to get back to normal!

We went today at 2pm and was also disappointed with the service and its clear to see they aren't taking things on board with all the negative reviews on here. Our service was very slow too but there seem to be a few members of staff walking around but there weren't many tables occupied either so the issue must be in the kitchen. The staff didn't seem very apologetic with other tables that were asking where there meals were and felt our custom wasn't valued. We had a dessert with a tablespoon size of custard too, when you pay £6.50 for a dessert I thought you would get a bit more. I certainly won't be returning to this restaurant.

We usually love Bills but went last night to make use of the ‘eat out to help out’ offer and left disappointed. It was extremely busy and we had to wait 15 mins for our table despite booking. The service was very slow, and they’d sold out of our starter (told 20 mins after ordering) and brought the wrong main. The offer is good but I don’t think worth the chaotic experience.

We thought we would come out for an early brunch to avoid the busy periods, but much to our surprise the restaurant was already very full. We didn't have a booking, but the friendly man at the door said that wasn't a problem at all and after a lovely welcome found us a table.The Breakfast menu was very varied and it all sounds amazing but we settled on the brunch plates, as they were highly recommended by the gentleman who seated us.There was a slight delay on the food, but you could tell everyone was trying really hard to get everyone seated and fed. So that didn't bother us!The coffees we ordered came out quickly and piping hot and our waitress Molly was very smiley and polite.The food was worth the wait and we really enjoyed ourselves.Everyone was so friendly and happy even though you could see they were very busy. Thank you for such great and friendly service!

Pre booked a table but had to wait 15 minutes outside. Once seated took around 15 minutes before we met our waitress who took our order. The starter I wanted had sold out so chose another. The main course I wanted also sold out. Annoying this wasn't mentioned when being seated! After 20 minutes had to chase the drinks which hadn't been put on the system. Took around 30 minutes for the starter to come. Food was tasty and decent portions. Set menu's good value. Asked for some blackcurrant cordial to go with our bottle of sparkling water and got some non alcoholic £4.75 drink added to our bill. Not what we asked for. We reduced the service charge (optional 12.5%) but very disappointing. These restaurants should be offering top service during these difficult times but was quite the opposite.

Poor service and food!We understand precautionary measures are in place and it’s nice to know that restaurants are making sure by checking temperatures. But the lady who was front of house was so unfriendly and unwelcoming made us feel we were a burden as we hadn’t booked and we waited nearly 20mins to be seated in a empty restaurant which I feel was a bit excessive!The waitress tried her hardest but wasn’t sure on the menu and had to keep checking with management on everything I asked!Food arrived very quickly chicken skewers to start was lovely! I order the nude burger which was average the burger was dry and I had to ask for additional sauce. No sauce with a burger?? My partner had steak which was again average - it was very chewy!We asked for the bill asking the waitress about where the tip went - we were told that she didn’t get any of the tip so we asked for it to be removed and we’d leave separately. We were told that she could not do this and a manager would sort it but would be 5/10 mins. She came back shortly after saying that it was taking to long and we should just pay it as it wasn’t that much! A discretionary tip is just that discretionary! I will not be told I have to pay a tip just because management say I am more than happy to pay a tip for good service and food. Neither of which I feel was deserving in this restaurant. Very disappointing.

I stopped coming to Bills when I went vegan, as at the time the menu was very limited/unimaginative.However, after visiting yesterday I was pleasantly surprised! I had the garlic and rosemary bread to start and the beetroot/quinoa Wellington as my main - both were excellent! Every component was lovely, texture and flavor really enjoyable.The service was brilliant too, my waitress was really friendly and brought me extra dressings to accompany my garlic bread. The rest of the team were attentive also, including the manager who had a great sense of humour.Couldn't fault the service or food and will definitely return! Thanks guys!

My first visit to Bill’s was on a girly night out as we heard that the cocktail’s are great. And yes, the cocktails wasn’t bad but it took them 45 min to bring us our first drinks!! We have to change drink orders twice as they did not have the ingredients. Another 45 min for second drinks and the starters. I had the halloumi and it was cold and dry, overcooked. For main I had the goat cheese and beetroot risotto and it was dry, boring and not pleasant at all. They’re was not many people in there this evening and I can understand that if the food is bad and the service slow. Luckily my girlfriends made the evening a good one.

I was at bills in St Albans for lunch with my one year old daughter to celebrate my birthday. It’s took the waiter 15 minutes to come to me and another 15 minutes to take my order. After 40 minutes no food and was time to pick up my kids. I had to pay my drink and walk away with out eating. I was so so so angry and decided never again I will go back in St Albans bills or recommend it to someone.

Had bad experiences before, had a review taken down by Bill's previously under pretence of receiving a voucher so they could apologise and 'make it up to me', nothing arrived. Me and friend thought we would try once more to eat at this establishment given in January they had a quite appetising looking menu for veganuary.The starters arrived quite late and when they arrived there it was cold we had to send it back, they arrived again literally two minutes later still quite cold however we were to hungry by then to send them back.My friend ordered a fish main from the main menu you I ordered something from the Vegan menu. My suete pudding was rock hard, my friends fish smelt like it was rotten. The management didn't charge us for the meal/drinks the manager and the server were the only redeeming quality of this restaurant (they were lovely and attentive) however I have now decided I would never eat at that location again, since then I have actually been to one of their venues in London since (for a bday so no choice) and the food was very good/hot/fresh, so there's clearly a problem with this location.

We had thought it would be nice to pop into Bills for a quiet drink at the end of our evening, but unfortunately it was not an enjoyable experience. The restaurant was practically empty, yet it took the multiple staff member 20 mins to serve two drinks. With respect to customer service and professionalism, the waiters and barmaid have a lot to learn; customers simply do not return to venues where staff are unacceptably rude.

We have been to Bills a few times at different times of day. Staff helpful and friendly. We had breakfast this time. All meals were enjoyed. Disappointed that you had run out of gingerbread men , if we had been told we would have changed the order . The avocado was left as it had things added to it and the taste is nicer Being just plain so maybe this could be offered as the menu says smashed . Anyway thank you.

We like the decor and feel of Bills, and have had good experiences in the past. Sadly our extended family lunch was a real dissapointment in Jan. The service was very slow and the food was well below expectations. The "wild mushroom sauce" served with the bland chicken dish contained 1 small chopped standard supermarket white mushroom for example, and the "coconut rice" may have had a tiny indetectable food flavouring but had never seen real coconut. When we queried this with the manager, she informed us there was nothing they could do to replace the dishes because they came like this in packets, so the chef's could improve/enhance/change anything. Overall a very expensive meal therefore for something that is now very sub-par and we've frankly had better food recently in the local Harvestor.

I've eaten at different Bill's restaurants over the years but this was my first time at this one. Service was immaculate - speedy, friendly and spot on. It was a real highlight. But I'm afraid the food wasn't. My soup was slopped all over the bowl when it was served to me, but it was the main course which really turned me off: rubbery almost inedible fish which looked like it had been cooked, cooked and cooked again it was so tough and tasteless. Sides were OK (chips excellent) and drinks not too expensive (though the food wasn't cheap), but in these days when 'casual dining' is under such threat from all sides, I'm afraid on this experience with this food this restaurant has to do better.

Visited Bills for my friends birthday lunch. I have been to Bills before and the food was good. Unfortunately this was not the case on this occasion. My friend had a fish finger sandwich which was overcooked as was my chicken skewers. Very disappointing

Rudolf looked after our party on a busy Sunday in December. He was super efficient and helpful and really worked hard to provide an enjoyable experience. The food was lovely and they gave me great confidence in dealing with my various food allergies - I would recommend in a heartbeat and will make it a regular stop when in St Albans

Have to say caught them out this afternoon. They were so so busy not expecting Mon rush but lots of people still in holiday mode. Have eaten there many times always left Happy. Today slightly different. Service we couldn't fault but did wait long time for mains which was a little disappointing. Senior member of staff spoke to us and apologies were massive and reduced our bill by half. Wasn't about the money but felt they needed to know as was a special meet up with friend. Doesn't affect my option of bills as always enjoyed previous visits and will return. Thanks guy's for doing a great job under difficult underestimated covers

Risking it on a very busy day with no reservation we were seen to quickly and the staff managed to find us a table, our server Ciara was absolutely fantastic and very attentive through our whole meal and with drink recommendations, the cocktails are great, the staffs cool and foods ace

Had Dinner here food was very good , I had burger, Mrs O had veg Wellington both cleared plates so good value . Service wasn’t that great possibly new staff member learning the ropes ? Was a busy place due to Christmas build up, place itself very nice and good atmosphere would visit here again

The place looks good, music OK, we had quickly a table without reservation. I had a classic hamburger and a beer. No draft in here, only bottles and they didn't bring the one I picked up. Hamburger not better than OK, really nothing I will remember. Waiters are young and need a little of experience but they did OK. So by the end of the day, I would have expected the food to be as cosy and inventive as the deco. Which unfortunatly is not the case.

Staff were great, having a joke with us. Delicious hot food. We shared the tzatziki, avocado and pitta starter (more than enough for 2 people) and then I had the seabass with potato rosti and more avo, my friend had the garlic chicken with sweet potato fries and spicy mayo, so good! Always go here, never disappointed

Faultless visit to Bill's in St Albans! Love this restaurant chain - have also visited Chichester, Guildford and York recently - and today we enjoyed delicious, well priced food with really good customer service. The only downside was hearing that apparently the waiting staff don't get their tips - didn't think you could do that anymore?

Went for breakfast with friends who came to visit. Breakfast wasn’t very nice and a hair was found in one breakfast, admittedly we did get that plate free but then my friend pulled out a long hair in her egg. We just paid and left. Total let down

When planing a day in St Albans, we didn't have to think too hard about where to go for breakfast - it had to be Bill's, as we've had their legendary breakfast/brunch in various other branches around the UK and it's always been great. However, sadly this one didn't quite live up to expectations.

Very friendly and helpful. Food was good and varied (try the banana dessert with the chocolate globe cover!!! Staff very pro-active to help with allergies. Went twice for dinner and once for breakfast.

Went to Bills for the first time on Sun 8th Sept. for breakfast. Loved the decor and staff attention. Was guided to our table immediately and a lovely waitress immediately bought water without having been asked. Nice touch. First question asked was do any of us have allergies. Never been asked that before, so another nice touch.

Fantastic for breakfast. My wife had one of the English breakfasts, good quality ingredients and very tasty. I had Eggs Benedict which was also first class. Lovely environment and pleasant staff, service was prompt. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for. Would recommend.

Vegan wife and Carnivorous husband walked into a bar.... What a delightful place. Our Italian waitress couldn't have had a bigger smile. The menu was very eclectic and for once there was loads for a vegan to choose from. Lots of drinks and reasonably priced. Really enjoyed this place. The decor was a mix of modern and shabby chic and it worked well. Good to see dog water bowls too. My only reservation about this place is the usual parking problem in St Albans which is a nightmare - otherwise was lovely.

We visited Bill's this weekend, table was nice decor is lovely and menu looked interesting. Unfortunately the food was not up to standard and service was so poor. I didn't eat any of my main at all. The fried frozen prawns over my brown avacados on a piece of dry bread really was a poor recommendation. Also it was left there for about 40 minutes no one cleared it no one asked me why I didn't enjoy it it was as if it was normal that customers would leave a entire dish untouched. Service charge included but more definitely not deserved. No room on the table at all because glasses are left to build up. We actually ended up clearing our own table and lifting my plate of food on to the bar area which then it also sat for 30 minutes untouched while servers looked at it walking back and forth. Really awful service I will avoid this place next time we're in the area.

Food: One of us had Bills classic burger. Contained just burger patty no lettuce, tomato, onion or spiced mayo & small amount of fries. I had the lunch 2 course. Chicken and sesame dumplings (pretty good). Main was the cod and prawn goujons. They were nice but only had 5 small ones and againt not many fries. My wife had minute steak and brownie and she was happy.

We had booked in at The Ivy St Albans for a celebration birthday meal, and were literally walking towards the Ivy when I received a phone call to say they couldn’t fulfill the booking due to a problem in the kitchen, and did we wish to re-book or cancel. As we were already there we wanted to eat so cancelled. We were near to Bills and I also happened to have a free bottle of Prosecco voucher from them for my birthday, so we headed in. We were warmly welcomed and given menus , while the complimentary bottle was produced for us. We were advised that there was only one sirloin available but all other choices were available , so could all choose without fear of not being able to have what we wanted. The starters were lovely , and the mains all went down very well. All beautifully cooked and presented. The only slightly disappointing thing was the coconut ice cream , which I’d ordered for sweet, which quite honestly could have been anything as there was no real taste of coconut. Loved the ambience, and the quirky interior decor of this branch, which is unique to the Bills chain. Would certainly visit again , and not as a second choice next time !

Bill's is our go to place for Brunch when we have friends in town- it serves both classics and new meals, and is always tasty. Service is mostly good, although as they get incredibly busy on weekends it can be a little slow.

We had a family brunch, complete with 2 week old baby and a toddler, at Bill's to celebrate my son's 40th birthday. Lovely Garden Plate brunch, perfect child's brunch, plus traditional full English. All delicious, then they brought in our cake and candle. Very pleasant staff. Excellent value.

It appears this pub may have changed hands again. Was a Big Smoke pub, serving mostly their own beers. But recently they've changed their offering to more usual brands. Cosy pub with a recently refurbished garden area. Last time we ate there we had a lovely meal, very generous portions.
