Fantastic place eat and drink very family oriented

It just seemed a bit dead no atmosphere but it was a nic e place and had a nice game of darts but I heard a rumour that it will be gone in December

Landlord is a bonafide legend, old school pub feel that is so hard to find these days, suprisingly big garden areas, lots of events and good locals. Great pub for all occasions

Our favourite pub in Harpenden. Always a warm welcome from Tracy, Michael, Caroline and the other bar staff. This visit was for Mother’s Day and the first time we had their Sunday roast and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Would also highly recommend the other food - especially Caroline’s amazing home made steak and ale pie! A lovely traditional pub with well kept beers and plenty of outdoor seating both front and back.

Absolutely delightful. The staff were so friendly and clearly a great family run pub. Food prices were reasonable, came out really quick and definitely very tasty. We stopped off after a dog walk and sat outside under the big gazebo out the front, the main road wasn't much of a disturbance

Popped in there for Sunday lunch after seeing it mentioned on Harpenden Facebook page. 2 of us, bill came to £35.20 for Sunday roast (Lamb) 2 x J2O and 2 bottles of Heineken 0.0. Plenty of food on the plate, very pleasant staff.Good value. Yorkies could be a bit larger.

Afternoon Tea Visited the pub for the first time today for a combined 60th/90th birthday celebration. Easy parking outside and warm welcome once inside the pub. The tea platter was impressive and very reasonably priced. Sandwich fingers were well filled, the scone was full of fruit and melted in the mouth along with the cream & jam. Tea flowed and the accompanying cakes - all home made - were light and tasty. Brilliant service and good company made the afternoon a joy. Expect to go back for a meal next time ! Recommended.

Service is second to none. Tracy and all the bar staff, are a joy and always makes you feel so welcome. Caroline and Michael have done an amazing job at bringing the pub back to a proper, local pub and then have gone above and beyond making it somewhere special. Proper, home cooked food at a reasonable price. Brilliant all year round! We love it.

Reasonably priced, served hot and very tasty. The meal was clearly made fresh and it came through in the taste of the dish. Delightful personality behind the bar, making you feel welcome. She was attentive and always busy, giving good conversation.

A lively pub with such character..thestaff are welcoming and helpful. The bingo night on Tuesdays is a great night out and our supper of pizza a true feast.

Just back from visiting The Gibraltar Castle and wanted to say what a fantastic deal they have at the moment- two dinners for the price of one - we had the steak wraps and they were delicious - lovely tender steak and chips with chips and a side salad - can't be beaten as far as we are concerned!!! Thanks very much 👍

I've never been able to convince my other half to try gravy. But the chef here managed it and im super impressed. The gravy was incredible... And it wouldnt have been fair for him to live his life without ever trying it. It was a sweet little pub, the lady at the bar was lovely and so was the chef. Dog friendly and a great roast dinner. We arent from harpenden... We just happened to be delivering a tin of paint that day in the area and took the dog for a walk around batford springs. But we would go again now that weve discovered this little gem, even if we didnt have paint to sell. :)

Driven past many a time but never thought to pop in. What a hidden surprise, it's next to the steam so I can easily play with the boat and my five year old, fantastic food, and the piece de resistance is the rear garden which is like a British version of a Japanese oriental garden. Lovely lovely staff too.

Really cosy pub that's been done up recently, great outdoor seating area out back. Food is delicious and the beer is reasonably priced and plentiful.

Popped in for lunch after taking the dog for a walk at Batford Springs. Had the meat and olive charcuterie and a pint each. Could not fault the food which was a decent size and delicious and really reasonably priced. We sat outside in the lovely raised bank area which was perfect area for a dog to chill. Fantastic and very friendly Barman whose name I didn’t catch but was very welcoming and chatty. Will definitely be returning again!

Nice restaurant and nice family run I believe. We both got the castle burger which was nice but never like having a burger van quality burger at a pub restaurant. It should be better quality meat! Everything else was nice and friendly though!

I was very upset when I came to this pub today Some guy doesn’t let me charge an electric scooter. The woman wanted to let go but that guy says no .... I explained that coming from Luton and back would not be enough, I even offered the money to drive me out anyway ....

Lovely outside areas which surround this beautiful old pub. Buzzers all installed on outside tables so that you can get quick table service, making it easy to enjoy a trip to a pub despite covid. The side and back garden enhancements the manager has undertaken since lockdown have added little zones for smaller and larger groups, with many areas under cover and with heaters as well. Michael manages the pub and he is a hilarious, confident and positive lead making a visit even more brighter because you’re building a relationship with the people who are working hard to make this lovely local business thrive. They’re an asset to Fullers and we love visiting whether that be just for a drink, weekday meal or roast on a Sunday. The pub itself is situated directly opposite the beautiful river Lea/Batford springs and nature area - a destination unto itself, so the pub is not only perfect for the local community it serves but also visitors to this local nature’s area.

Very nice pub to visit quality lagers and cocktails on offer decent prices. A nice covered patio area with heaters you can feel and a beautiful garden.

Shocking service, adds drinks to the tab that was never asked for and blame and confront you for their mistake. Money grabbing. Slow service, staff aren’t trained properly and don’t know how to use a tray, bringing drinks out 1 by 1 instead. Rude and arrogant bar lady that threatens her customers. I’d avoid this pub by any means. If you want to be ripped off and treated like crap then this is the place for you. Honestly have no idea on how to run a pub properly. Complete shambles. Not to mention the fact they let large gatherings book. Tables of 15-20.

Tracey, Michael and the team are fab. Adapted well to Covid-19 with the one way system. So so lovely and a nice business in Batford I wholey recommend!

The homemade beef and ale pie and burger were superb. The side salad was crisp and freshly prepared. Service friendly and attentive. The Rioja was very poor. Next time we will stick to beer and it will be five stars.

Just popped into this pub tonight for a quick drink. Great pub.. excellent staff all very much taking notice of covid rules but providing a good service at the same time. Offered a choice if seating areas and then table service... nice playlist at a decent volume allowing conversation. Seems to be a good choice of beer. The bar staff are very professional and customer focused. We will be back for sure.

Visiting the area we had lunch here this time last year, the food was good and the place warm and welcoming. This year the place seemed old and sad to say a bit shabby. It was cold and damp outside but the large fireplace was empty and unlit: memo - there's nothing as welcoming as an open fire in an English pub, if you have it flaunt it. We didn't stay after the first drink.

A group of us went for lunch based on the good reviews. Unfortunately the pub didn't live up to our expectation or the reviews. On reading through the reviews again perhaps best go for a Sunday lunch or a special night but definitely not worth going during the week. Despite the fact that their website claims "There is a creative (and mouthwatering) lunch menu, plus a host of daily specials for evening diners - all put together using the finest, freshest ingredients available" the menu was limited. In the end I had ham (not home cooked) egg and chips - chips were OK and there isn't much you can do wrong with an egg. Our group were really disappointed, the pub was absolutely empty, no atmosphere, we were the only people eating. Cost of ham egg & chips, 1 glass of wine and a coffee was £18.00. I don't mind the money but I would have certainly expected home cooked ham and a better more varied menu. None of the other meals were very good and we will never go back again. Shame!

Well what can I say, I was disappointed initially to hear it was a buffet . However that was a mistake. It was home made, fresh, tasty, hot and refreshed every 15 minutes. The night was much more than I could have expected. Bring on the next event, Chinese night. Gibraltar Castle Caroline, Michael, Tracy Joe and Lucia you are the A team and the Gibralter Castle is lucky to have your expertise and attention to detail . Thank you from a local resident . Spent a lovely evening here with a group of friends which fell in a US themed food night.. Michael and Caroline provided a great atmosphere along with their friendly staff staff. Although busy all the food arrived together and hot to our table of 7. The atmosphere was very relaxed and made for a fantastic evening. I'm looking forward to the next themed night .Thank you

We visited the Gibraltar Castle last night and thoroughly enjoyed the American Grill night - delicious food and very generous portions - ate far too much but it was so tasty! Thanks to all the staff who worked hard to make sure the evening was a great success!

Basically I won't be returning to this pub for food, as I was really disappointed overall. Maybe learn that it's not all about taking the customers money eh.

A lovely quiet and relaxing pub. We had our first roast there and weren't disappointed. We got a lovely decent amount of beef, plenty of fresh veg and both roasts and mash. The server was polite and very helpful. Would recommend if your looking for a relaxing quiet drink/meal

First we did not book, Phoned to say we were coming about Six persons. Plenty of room, all sat together. Ordered our drinks and meals all in one go drinks arrived pronto all the meals arrived together. Plenty of food served on hot plates and offered bread as a side, which we accepted . For a pub meal you could not ask for more, simple basic and just the thing for a mid day lunch.

Visiting Gibraltar was one of the best experiences I had for long time. There is a lot to see and explore. If you have good phisical condition you can enjoy it much much more. There is a lot to explore and enjoy. If not, your visit will be limited to few things.

After a long walk on Sunday we were worried you weren’t doing food. But pleasantly surprised you were. What a fantastic lunch. Huge portions we had the chicken & lamb with mash & roast potatoes mmmmmm!!! No room for deserts. Think they stop doing food on Sunday at 4.30. Staff are very welcoming & friendly, dog friendly also which is a big must for us going anywhere to eat.

Great Pub, looks very nice from the outside too. a very old pub with lots of history and it's right next to the Upper lea valley walk pathway and Batford springs nature reserve.
