Bill's in St Edmundsbury

Saw that Bills was closing, which is a terrible shame as a favourite brunch spot of mine and my partners for the great gluten free options, so on Saturday 29th July we popped in for brunch. In the past we would always be warmly welcomed at the front. On this occasion we waited at the front for a few minuets with no sign of any staff. A few minutes later a young waitress walks down the steps, looks at us and then starts clearing a table, but putting items on a tray. She then looks at us again, then walks over to another table to ask how their food is, then returns to clearing the table. She looks at us again and finally decides to walk over after ignoring us for close to 5 minuets, it’s now been nearly ten minuets since we walked in! She walks over “table for two?” - I reply “Yes please” and I continue to say “one gluten allergy” but she interrupted me and said “just a second” before picking up two menus and walking off without us. My partner and I looked at each other and both said “nope” and we walked out. Service at Bills in the past was always superb. Always asked for allergies at the door and seated quickly. Which given service charge is included you’d expect. On this occasion is was severely lacking, I assume in part due to staff being aware the store is closing and there no longer being a reason to care about standards. We walked to Edmundos instead, we were greeted within seconds of walking in and as soon as we said a table for two the following question was “any allergies?” For me as someone with Coeliac this immediately settles me. The food was also great. Shame to lose bills, but thankfully Edmundos is there and doing a great job.

Had a lovely breakfast. We were served by Abi, she was really lovely. Service was quick and friendly.

This visit was lovely except there was no soap in the ladies loo. Macaroni cheese yummy felt portion for mains was small All staff were really good especially Abi, she’s first class.

Lovely Service from Abi and the bannoffee pie was really nice! Our only complaint was that the mackerel salad is a little bit too simplistic. It contained, yogurt, raddish, mackerel flat bread and some seeds. Could’ve done with some cucumbers or some more greens/pulses and something to give it a sharp flavour - e.g. Horderadish in the yogurt or something pickled like gherkings capers etc. But overall we had lovely lunch here! Abu was super accommodating to all out requests.

Had a very poor experience here last year and give him his due, the area manager did try to recover the situation. This visit was not much different. Food was passable at best. Ordered brunch sandwich with bills cheesy potatoes but actually got a bowl of fries with nasty cheese sauce, when I questioned this I was told they had run out of potatoes. My daughters chicken was cold and grey so she didn’t eat it. Entire restaurant appears to be run by very young staff, no offence but I think they need some experienced and older staff to maintain standards. The only reason we went was because blue light card were offering 30% off so price wise it was ok but wouldn’t go again.

Seriously AWFUL!!!!!!! Three of us attended for breakfast. The kids porridge was gloopy, stodgy and tasted awful, the four year old didn’t eat it. The eggs for the florentine were hard, the avacado was brown and the hollandaise was sparse. The pancakes were fine. All in all a real disappointment. Will not return.
