This is without a doubt the best fish and chips I've ever had and I've had lots. An absolute must visit if you're in the area, it's a really clean place and very comfortable inside, it has ample seating and the staff were all great, I will definitely be back again.

Food was actually tasty but be aware that is not granted that food are gluten or soy free, there's cross contamination. Staff members are very friendly.

Their fish & chips are one of the most traditional. It's good, but nothing too special!

This is clearly the premiere fish and chip restaurant in Edinburgh, if not Scotland. The staff were exceptionally friendly, efficient and customer leaning. Prices were very reasonable and the food high quality. Highly recommended.

We had a fantastic time at Bertie’s! 10/10 The atmosphere, the food and the service were amazing. We had the pleasure to get served by Amanda and she took so good care of us and gave us additional tips for places in Scotland! We are coming back and hopefully we’ll have Amanda as our waiter again. The food is good, we had the squid, the fish 'n chips and the peas. All good and solid. I like Bertie's because they have light breading and you don't have a heavy oil taste. He's a good solid Scottish restaurant without spending a fortune, and in Edinburgh no less.

Excellent option for eating typical "fish n chips" in Edinburgh, perfect service from Natália was excellent, she made us feel at home and even suggested dessert in addition to worrying about my wife who is allergic to shrimp. We had a great time here...

I ate breaded haddock, first of all, the portion is huge and filling, it comes with plenty of fries. The fish was also very delicious. I also recommend the sour sauce, whose name I can't remember right now, it adds a lot of flavor. The location is also very good, especially for those who are careful to eat halal fish, so Berties is a very good option, I definitely recommend it.

A brilliant sit in chippy restaurant with great quality food and friendly staff. Most importantly for a chippy, you get to add as much salt and vinegar as you like once your generously portioned food is served.

We ordered fish and chips to take away and some haggie rolls, the place had been recommended to us and, honestly, considering how limited the fish and chips are, it was quite delicious. The rolls are also very good and the staff is quite friendly in explaining everything to us in detail, the truth is that I would return, plus the quantities are good. All this cost us 16 pounds, a very affordable price.

For vegans and vegetarians, there is a wide selection of choices, including fake fish & chips! I really recommend it. I think it's worth all the hype it has on social media

The special dish (haddock fish and chips) is remarkable. Just cooked to perfection (neither overcooked nor undercooked!). Served with fries and tartar sauce. The restaurant is huge - around 300 seats - but at peak times and days it is best to reserve. The service is very fast and relatively efficient. Allow around £25 per person for a main course, a beer and a dessert. Experience to be repeated!

We came for the battered haddock, and boy, were the reviews on point! Everything about this place is great: a very coordinated crew making sure you're served as soon as possible and in the kindest manner; the food was excellent and the drinks didn't disappoint either! Plenty of options to choose from, the menu is quite well rounded. The atmosphere is very nostalgic, early 2000s mixed with a fresh and modern spirit. This was our first dining experience in Edinburgh and it made the trip already so much better! Can't recommend enough! 😊

We had lunch here, and despite it being quite busy when we arrived, we were seated within 15–20 minutes without a reservation. The food was absolutely incredible—I’m speechless! The fish was the best I’ve ever had—perfectly cooked, flavorful, and without any fishy smell. The experience exceeded my expectations, and I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!

Fish was tasteless. It was like rubber. I had fishing chips for many years. I was very hungry. I seen the reviews and comments but I have been disappointed. Service was good at atmosphere was average. I think they should start to put sea bream or Seasbass as steamed fish Because haddock Fish was tasteless. It did not suit the lemon at all.

The worst in the city. The fish and chips are bland, the mashed potatoes are disgusting... but the worst thing is an impersonal place, with dozens of friendly and welcoming pubs with good cuisine in the city. Furthermore, they try to charge you 10% of the dinner as a tip without telling you and you have to complain so that they can take it off your account, and they also look at you badly. Bertie’s Proper Fish and Chips was a fantastic meal for our family. The atmosphere was lively, the service was great, and the food was outstanding. Hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The kids loved riding the classic glass elevator to the second floor… kids! Everything felt fresh and well-prepared, making it a great spot to enjoy a classic dish done right.

loved the place, went on a Saturday it was pretty busy but was still sat instantly. got the dessert sharing platter and it was soooo good. the donuts tasted fresh and were still very warm and the fried mars bar was very lovely! definitely not an everyday thing but a great little spot. next time will definitely be going for the fish and chips as it looked lush.

The fried fish experience at this restaurant was one of the best! It was incredibly delicious, and the service was great. I would like to specifically mention the staff members Zouhair & Zoe – they were kind, friendly, and their service was excellent. The portion size was huge and easily enough for two people. After a long day touring thru the Highlands and Glasgow we needed a good meal and Bertie's did not disappoint. 2 x battered haddock + 1 x mushy peas + 1 x slaw was just perfect with 2 ciders. The fish and chips were cooked perfectly and the mushy peas tasty + slaw with a hint of pepper were a perfect combination. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately, my experience at Bertie’s Fish & Chips fell short. The chips were stale, the vegan batter was overly oily and fell apart, and the squid was very rubbery. While food quality can sometimes vary, the lack of attentive and friendly service made it difficult to address these concerns. Had the staff been more welcoming, I would have been open to discussing the issues directly.

we visited yesterday with my nan who has hearing aids in and they went above and beyond and sat us at a quiet table and tried not too seat other people beside us so she can hear us talking and the food was delicious and gluten free food was like eating the normal version will be back soon

On the basis that "Fish & Chips" seems to me to be a gastronomically limited dish, this is one of the best places to try it in Edinburgh. The Steak pie was good, although I was expecting a touch more flavor that I didn't find. Wow, the food was good. Nothing exceptional. Of course, the vibe of the site and the attention are very very good.

Encouraged by opinions on the Internet and on Tiktok, we chose this place for an evening dinner. The advantage of this place are large portions and a nice atmosphere. As for the dishes, the fish was very fatty and the breading smelled strange. It wasn't the best fish I've ever eaten, although there are such opinions on the Internet. Average fish & chips, and the service wasn't very pleasant when we said we didn't want any drinks or dessert. I don't understand adding a service fee upfront.

The waitress was very nice, we ordered vegan burgers with sides, all the sides were deep fried and almost completely dough, barely filling. It was quite nasty, and the mashed potatoes were full of flour I could barely eat it. The veggie burger was OK, but would expect better from such a restaurant.

Visited for the first time from San Diego, California. Anju represented your establishment with excellent service and knowledge of your menu. The fish was the freshest I ever tasted! Will definitely go back!

Great fish and chips, I had the fried haddock. This was my first experience having fish and chips as an American and it did not disappoint. The haggis was actually pretty good as well.

Don’t order the burger here. It’s burger van quality burger, at restaurant prices. The diluted perfectly shaped pre-made patty tasted more like a sausage than beef. The bread was school cafeteria quality. Disappointed and feel conned. Seems like they’ve been doing this for years, but they also add 10% onto your bill and then ask if that is ok, thereby pushing you to pay it all. I won’t go back to be honest. The branding and set up draws you in, but just pick somewhere else.

You might think: This (wonderful) street is all about getting as much money as possible from tourists for little service. That was by no means the case here. The food was tasty (be sure to try the mixed starters!), the beer was very good and the service was very accommodating. We had nothing to complain about and recommend Bertie's without reservation.
