A good place to eat fish and chips right in the middle of all the tourist sites. The place is large and well organized so there was no wait for a table. It doesn't feel like a tourist trap since there are plenty of locals and their families eating too, although it's not signature cuisine either...

We were served by a lovely waitress. The setting is nice and the food is very good. Please note, the herb and lemon fish & chips are not breaded. Although it is excellent, I would have preferred it to be breaded like real fish & chips

It may be the best restaurant where you can taste fish and chips. The staff was attentive in a spacious environment and most importantly, it was a delicious experience.

The place and location are worth it. Very central. The service even though it was full was very good. The food a little less perhaps, I found the fish very greasy unfortunately.

There was a long waiting line, and I was seated within 20mins, without a reservation, for dinner for 3 on Thursday. All staff were very helpful and kind. The interior was pretty, clean, and laid back. The portion (battered fish and chips pictured) was very large (I was not able to finish it). Good value for money (£15.95). The food was very fresh and delicious. However I found it to be too greasy. Would recommend.

The service from Natalia was simply amazing. With a smile, friendliness, but also the time he spent at our table was wonderful.

It is very big; There are many tables, they serve you quickly, and the fish and chips are very good. It is suitable for the whole family. They have to order a fried mars chocolate for dessert.

Food was good example of traditional fish and chips, although on the pricier tourist side but to be expected given the location. Service was a bit hit and miss, but mostly friendly. Good place to try a deep fried mars bar!

The food is delicious but I highlight Rosie's attention, she has been super nice to us. We ordered the typical fish & chips and it was delicious, we didn't have a reservation but since we went early it didn't take them even ten minutes to give us a table. Then we ordered dessert, I wanted to try the fried mars bar, but the crumble was tastier. Thank you again Rosie for your attention 👌.

During our London holiday, we tried delicious fish and chips in beautiful places. We tried it again when we saw so many positive comments during our holiday in Edinburgh and we ate really delicious fish and chips. The employees were very friendly and helpful. We definitely recommend you to stop by during your trip to Old Town. And as a bonus, the Marsh chocolate dessert they recommended was quite delicious.

They got us seated quickly and service was very fast! The fish was pretty good. We got the lemon baked fish and gluten free battered fish. It was just a bit odd at first - they instructed us to sit at the bar to wait and the bartender seemed annoyed when I asked for more time with the menu and my husband only got a soda. That was a bit unwelcoming but otherwise all was good!

Came with our dog, who was visible at all times, they asked us to wait 10-15 mins for a table which we did. Someone called our name and sat us down. 3 mins after she came back and told us that they didn’t accept dogs. ????? there’s no sign at the entrance, the host never said anything and claimed he didn’t see the dog, and the waitress told us she was new and didn’t knew the policy. Can’t explain how terrible this was, they made us wait and even sat us down, we took our jackets off to be kicked out of the place ?? For a 4kg dog who was inside a sling and was sleeping. Just terrible. Either you add a sign on your door saying NO DOGS ALLOWED and train your staff properly, or you evolve and accept it’s 2024 and people have trained dogs they can dine in with. Thx

We ordered a delivery of the battered fish and sweet potato chips with some deep fried squid. I must admit the fish was battered perfectly and it was very chunky. The squid was delicious too.

Did not have reservation on busy night. Was seated promptly. Staff were all very friendly. Service was swift.

Had a very bad and stressful experience in this place. When I want to order, I was being ignored for a long time even I sit in a very obvious place. Then, I was being blamed twice by the server there because she thinks I do not have a polite way to notice her to order. I never being judged because of this reason before in any place inside the UK. Customers pay 10% percent for service but I need to sit there and listen for the server’s lesson twice. Lol

Great fish and chips and scotch egg, literally a minute away from the Museum Context (Harry Potter official store) 2 minutes away from the Bobby statue. You can sit and have a relaxed meal or sit order to go

The fish and chips are excellent, fresh fish with fries cooked in beef breast. Cooking that makes all the difference! Very nice atmosphere although a little noisy given the crowds rushing there. Impeccable, very friendly service with very good value for money. In short, a very good address in the center, ideal for tasting local products

I’ve had “fish and chips” before, but never tried “proper fish and chips”. Can confirm the world famous fish and chips here are definitely “proper”. You can taste the difference in the batter and whatever fats they’re fried in. Incredible. Also the haggis bon bons for an appetizer were stellar. Definitely worth eating here whilst in Edinburgh! The location is great, but hmmm... the food is honestly so-so. It may have felt awkward to eat fish and chips and haggis by yourself, but even if you think about each dish individually, I think they were all at the level of farewell!!

I wouldn’t say the food is wonderful the fish I had was battered and just like fish you’d get out any chippie. Very over priced wouldn’t hurry back. Also not disabled friendly all stairs no lifts I suffer joint problems so was like a workout trying to get up and down the stairs no toilets in the top floor restaurant either not very good.

Great restaurant! A little basic food but very good and with specialties! Very warm welcome, waiters and cooks at the top! We came for a birthday and they made a superb effort to put a candle on the dish and come and sing happy birthday! At the top! And beautiful decor!

It was a first time for us to eat here and it didn’t fail our expectations. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. The food was really delectable, worth the price indeed. My son and I ordered the famous BATTERED HADDOCK and my husband ordered the Breaded Haddock and we were all filled with satisfaction. The very accommodating guy in dreadlocks handled our orders and he was able to provide good service. We will be definitely back upon our next visit to Edinburgh. Good job Berties!

The food was good, and the atmosphere was delightful—both were definite highlights of the experience. However, I was served a mug with visible lipstick stains, which raised concerns about hygiene. This issue lingered in my mind throughout the lunch and somewhat overshadowed an otherwise pleasant visit.

I have nothing but good words. The best Fish&Chips I've ever tried, plus very good customer service and a great atmosphere (although too crowded for me). The restaurant is huge and super well-kept, organized and very clean. Their quality precedes them and that makes it top of the line so I highly recommend booking!!

Food was delicious although fish and chips was on more expensive side. Fries were a little dry but fish was just perfect and crispy. Staff was a little grumpy which is okay but we were treated a little rude when we didn't order drinks but asked for free tap water. Later one tip was added to receipt and we had to ask for it to be removed.

Disappointed by the service on our third visit. We asked for our haddock and chips to be cooked in vegetable oil. The waitress had to check with the kitchen three times and we were told we could only have gluten-free fish and chips in vegetable oil. Server did not check on us and did not come to take our bill. If you are vegetarian/pescatarian, I would be wary about eating here as some things that seem vegetarian are not and they will cook everything in beef fat. Won't be visiting again unfortunately. Usually a highlight for us when visiting Edinburgh.

It's a very large "chippy". The quality is good. To a local it felt like a tourist hotspot. However if you like decent Haddock, I had the breadcrumbed version with mushy peas with it, it's worth putting on your list to go. Licensed for beer wine etc. Table time limited.

Incredible food!!!!! The absolute BEST most insanely delicious fried fish I’ve ever eaten. We ate here twice in our week visit because I had to have it again before we left. Come to Texas please!!!! The second night we only purchased fish and had drinks at the bar. Husband had some beer and they made me Irn Bru and Vodkas, if you’ve never had one, try it, they’re so good! ❤️ from Texas!

Very nice chip shop with friendly staff and the typical Scottish chippy menu which is much more varied than our English version. We had an issue with the squid but staff happy to replace for something different at no cost. The location of the restaurant is also fantastic will definitely be back.

Having booked a table weeks in advance and travelled 5 hrs for a trip to Edinburgh we arrived at Bertie’s to find it was closed . We didn’t receive an email to let us know of the closure very bad customer service will not be booking again .

Came here expecting a nice plate of good old fish & chips but my hopes were dragged down when I got a taste of the food. The interior is very welcoming with a nice warm, cozy and inviting vibe. The staff are very friendly and helpful with all smiles. The portion size was pretty decent for the price; not too big and not too small. The fish & chips tasted ok but could be better and the chips were generic. The steak sandwich which costs £14.99, was not really like a steak but more like a burger patty instead. The calamari was pretty decent but could be better. Overall, not a bad place to have fish and chips, maybe I caught them on a bad day; maybe I’ll try it again in future.
