One of the typical places to try the famous Scottish Fish and Chips! The dish comes abundant with lots of potatoes and the fish is simple! Its preparation does not have as much flavor but it is accompanied by sauces of your choice to give it more flavor! The place is spacious, I recommend it

It's a no. I searched for fish and chips in the city and found this restaurant that seemed to have good reviews so I came by. It was not a very busy night so i was seated right away. I ordered the haddock fish and chips and mushy peas for the sides. Only giving 1 star cause i liked the mushy peas, however, as for the fish, it was extremely oily that even to my last 2 bites, oil was everywhere. Additionally, it was so bland depsite me putting vinegar and salt and/or the tartar sauce that comes with it. The fries were soggy as well when served to me. Service is only 3 stars cause I ordered first than the two ladies next to me but for some reason, their order came first then i had to wait for at least 10 mins for mine. I could only say the ambience is really nice, that's about it. This is the worst fish and chips i've ever had. I could say so cause I had tried A LOT especially in London and other cities in UK but quality isnt like that. That one shop down Victoria St that doesnt have seats are selling better fish and chips.

Very nice place to have the famous fish and chips. Would advise also to try their toffee sticky pudding. In case you would like to visit the place, better to book before you go as it’s packed, however, for a better and more economic advice; have your order as a takeaway.

We came here with my friends the atmosphere was nice, the restaurant was full we had to wait on a separate table before being sitted that is why it is better to have a reservation first. They had many options, but i think the best one that I ordered, which is battered, haddock fish with double fries. The staff was welcoming with a smile on their faces . I recommend the place i think they might have the best fish and chips in Edinburgh.

My visit in November 2024 The restaurant smells very bad. After ordering, I waited for 5 minutes and the table was prepared. The request was Fish and Chips 3/10 I did not like Gharqan Zeit Calamari 4/10 The sauce is nice Fish Tacos 4/10 Very regular Sprite 0/10 has an iron taste in the drink Moya Hero 0/10 The taste is bad and the box has a yellow color from use.

The word „proper” in the name of the restaurant is on point. Outstanding fish, chips were crispy and the sauce was a perfect combo for the iconic duo of the UK kitchen. The place is not the cheapest but worth it’s money. There is also nice range of beers to choose from. Tap water is free if you prefer that kind of drink. Service was super quick and the staff was really friendly. Can definitely recommend! 😋😄

I can see why this restaurant is always packed. The food was delicious - I'd recommend the haddock and chips main and the macaroni and cheese sharer. Friendly and speedy service. I'd go again.

We dined here on Halloween night. While the fish and chips are heavily promoted, we found it was far from the best we’ve had. There’s a spot in the city center, much less advertised, where the fish was fresher and crispier. Here, the fish lacked that quality, and the chips were disappointingly soft rather than crispy. On a positive note, the beer selection was great. However, what left a very sour taste was the service. Unlike every other pub in Edinburgh where we've been free to choose the tip, here the waitress added a £10 tip to the final bill without any consultation or notice. This felt quite disrespectful, especially as tourists. So, fellow Italians (and all travelers!), be cautious—there are better, more welcoming places around where you're not pressured or taken advantage of.

Lower than average food quality. Unpleasant service because they automatically added a tip to the bill. I had been in Edinburgh for a week and NOwhere does it work like this. You can always decide. In most places I left it, where I was happy. Here they were incorrect. Overall, with all the good places there are, I wouldn't recommend the place. Chaotic and commercial

Historic place to eat Fish and Chips! The portions are very generous and the service is very fast. If you haven't booked, there's likely to be a bit of a wait. Nice atmosphere and young service. Absolutely recommended!

We stopped by for some fish and chips, and while the food was decent, the service was what made our visit memorable. The staff was really accommodating and made adjustments to our order without any hassle, which we appreciated.

Steak Pie was flaky and the gravy was tip top. Mushy peas were kinda smokey, great flavor. Partner had the fish, loved it. Staff was super friendly. Chips could have been a little crispier. Get the Sticky Toffee Pudding!

If you want to eat really tasty fries and fish. Then definitely go here. Excellent service, served quickly and very friendly.

Amazing fresh fish with non - lumpy curry sauce

I followed the advice of some of my friends on the excellent chips and burgers of this place. The chips "actually" met my expectations (nicely crispy and fried properly), the hamburger I would say not. There was a mistake in understanding between me and the person taking the order, as I had requested a vegetarian burger, but instead I received the classic one. I had a lot of difficulty communicating, on the other hand there was a total absence of wanting to understand. I didn't complain, I ate my sandwich 🥪, good, but not great! I enjoyed my Takeaway in the gardens of Princess Garden, and then I was attacked by a Seagull! Survivor 😥 I went back for dinner, sitting inside this time! The dinner was amazing, I tried the battered pork with a side of chips, and then I also had the sweet chips (so good), to finish I chose an apple pie with cream, I devoured everything! Bertie's deserves it. Plus, you have an infinite selection of sauces for chips, absolutely free, already available on the table! Very satisfied and satisfying😉

The food was excellent. Visited in couple, ordered a cajun fish and a veggie haggis. The cajun fish was well cooked and very tasty, veggie haggis as well. The service was also very good and they were kind to bring us a doggy bag for the rest of the food. It would have been a shame to waste it!

This place doesn't need another 5 stars review for its food, so this is just an appreciation review for the staff working there. They are super friendly, helpful, and caring. I mentioned that I didn't want anything with pork, and my hostess figured out that I eat only halal and then she explained me that they are not halal certified but they use separate pots/pans in such cases to avoid any cross contamination. Even though they were quite full and busy but throughout my stay, she was kind enough to make sure that my experience was good. Faith in humanity restored 😊 Kudos to them 👏❤️

Clyde was fantastic he sorted the tables, moved us to a bigger table which was needed. And was on the ball throughout. The fish and chips were also very good which helps.

A large pub, restaurant. The menu is small, which is also quite good. We enjoyed the food. Unfortunately it was not possible to pay individually. Which I didn't think was okay because we were a group of 17 people and everyone ate and drank differently. It's just very touristy.

In the first week that this restaurant opened I talked with the boss John and his son Leo. They were worried that it would not be a success. I suggested that they keep up the quality and all would be well. Visited today. OMG THEY HAVE KEPT UP THE QUALITY. Well done John and Leo!

One of the more modern and clean places in Edinburgh with excellent toilets (sometimes hard to come by in Europe). The food of course was incredible. The classic fish and chips really is something special. This is a can’t miss destination for tourists.

Got the popular fish and chips…not impressed, just ordinary, nothing special about! And my wife got beef burger… Beef, tomato and piece of salad in! Not reccomend!

The food was incredible and they were very careful with my wife's gluten free entree. They have a separate gluten free fryer which was appreciated. We had the fish and chips (as one does at a fish and chips restaurant) and I would definitely recommend it.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely adored Bertie‘s Proper Fish and Chips. I ate there on three different occasions during my 7-day stay in Edinburgh, once in-restaurant and twice for takeaway. Some of the best fish and chips I have had. The fish is SO flaky and perfect and the batter is delightfully crisp. It was absolutely delicious. Definitely stop by if you are in Edinburgh!

The best fish and chips... The french fries tasted just like frozen french fries, but the fish was really... super crispy and cut right through with a fork, no need for a knife. There is no fishy taste at all and it is soft and fluffy. There is also a special hot sauce, and if you sprinkle it on, it is a paradise. Absolutely delicious, highly recommended!!!

The fish and chips: fish was soggy and chips were super oily and scorching hot for way too long I burned the roof of my mouth and it legit peeled. We ordered a burger too honestly I knew it would be a mistake but my friend insisted. Anyways it was the worst piece of meat I have consumed (pictured). The service was subpar. Wouldnt have come here if I were able to make any reservations for decent places. Poorly ventilated on top of all this :(

Enjoyed dinner at Berties. Had Fish supper, sausage supper and my daughter enjoyed the vegan fish and chips.Massive portion of fritters for £3 and the mushy peas were lush.Cant fault the service and kids enjoyed the desserts too though the brownie was better than the caramel apple crumble. The Frozen porn star martini was good but overpriced in my opinion.

Delicious food, great atmosphere and service! We got the Mac and cheese bites that come with a smoky ketchup that was beyond amazing. We also ordered Berties Fritto which was enough to feed 2 people honestly as well as a hard stawberry cheesecake milkshake. Hard because it's alcoholic not because it was bad. Everything we got was beyond delicious!

Food was okay. A bit pricy for a Typical fish and chips nothing really special about it. Also DO NOT ORDER CALAMARI Its disgustingly hard and chewy. Its obviously frozen. Service was really bad staff were rude and snappy.

I’ve eaten plenty of chippy’s over the years and this was by far the best one I’ve ever had. Plus the staff was incredible, the restraint clean and inviting, and it was exactly what we needed.

Food was pretty good and no wait to get a table. Service was not good at all. The waiter walked to every table occasionally besides ours and the group behind us. He mainly just stood near his manager and chatted it up.

This was our first meal in Edinburgh by complete chance, and also probably our best overall. Tasty local food, uncomplicated, good price vs quality ratio, friendly staff and nice atmosphere.

Came here for classic battered fish and chips. The restaurant was quite spacious and able to hold large groups. The food was fresh and went well with the tartare sauce. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

Stopped in for Brunch. Ordered a Scotch egg and classic fish and chips. The Scotch egg was delicious, especially paired with the black pudding. The fish and chips weren't too special, but it was a big portion.

It's located on Victoria Street, so it's very accessible! The prices on the menu on the first floor are for takeout, but when you go up to the second floor, it's a little more expensive to sit down and eat. The staff is friendly, the interior is spacious and the atmosphere is nice. Everyone criticized the food because it was fried food, but the fried sausage alone tasted a bit like flour, so it was just okay. Overall it was good!

Ok. The truth is- I went to scotland looking for gluten-free fish n chips this time. I was there for 2 weeks, and finally found the BEST FISH in the universe there, our hotel concierge bragged about it... and he was absolutely right. This place is unusual, welcoming, quick, comfortable, and yummy. Don't miss it.

The fish was delicious, and so was the tartar sauce. The Haddock was perfectly cooked. I also had the mushy peas, and they were pretty tasty. The gluten-free berry was good as well. Highly recommend if you're looking for some fish and chips.

I think you can see the delight in my parents faces, as they enjoy some of the best Fish & Chips, Edinburgh has to offer. As a Blue Badge Holder, they were able to park at the door of the Restaurant and for their convenience they were able to utilise the small lift to take them up to the main dining hall. The ambience, the service provided by the team was 2nd to none. The Fish itself was large, succulent and perfectly cooked. Well done on sustaining excellent service and food over the years you have been open. As a local, we appreciate it very much.
