I've been here a few times for events and otherwise, having assumed with its privileged location and association that it would have some adequate gastronomy and dignified service as well. Unfortunately that assumption has played out very poorly, eroded each time. Customers queue waiting to order while half the thoughtless staff occupies themselves chatting and polishing glasses instead. Later on in the evening mice jump out of the seating and will brazenly run around the floor. Telling the hang about staff about the mice they barely blinked, acknowledged they're there. It seemed they couldn't be fussed. Whoever is responsible needs to get its staff and hygiene in order or get out of this cultural institution to which they're bringing shame.

Dreadful from start to finish. We'd arrived before 6, the bar had (conveniently?) run out of the cheapest bottle of white (before 6pm remember?). Barman chatted to customer, looked at me waiting to get served, went back to chatting to customer. Meanwhile another customer arrives waiting to get served. Barman approaches us and pretends he doesn't know I was waiting first. Awkward. Thankfully other customer reasonable. Later server comes to our table asks if we'd like anything removing, I joke about our numerous crisp packets (remember everything we buy is helping with their profit). Server very miserable (I know there isn't a rule saying staff should be happy but eh?). We were a party of 5 and continued buying white wine. Towards the end of the evening, I return to the bar, ask the bar manager(?) Omar 'are you still serving?' 'Yeah sure". Server who'd been miserable earlier now at the bar says 'I can't serve you with a bottle of wine - we're closing soon". Me 'There are four of us - that's a glass each". I ask if she'd prefer me to order 4 glasses instead of one bottle? She says we can't have drinks. I ask to speak to Omar who says' yes, they can have a bottle, there are 4 customers - it's like a glass each". I ask why I still have to get a more expensive bottle as they haven't replenished the fridge with the cheaper wine we'd preferred. I'm then offered a non-chilled white as they've just put some more wine back into the fridge. This all happened before 10pm. If the staff are really that unhappy to be working there - can't you go elsewhere? Thoroughly unenjoyable in terms of service.

Was originally looking to eat in the NT but their loss was BFI's gain! Strange how the BFI accepted walk-ins to a busy restaurant when the NT wouldn't to a deserted one! Great pre show meal in a busy but pleasant atmosphere, great found & drink, reasonably priced, with good service despite the busy nature of the restaurant, would certainly eat there again

First impression - we were asked to move from the table for four we were sitting at to a table for two further in. We wouldn’t mind if it had been busy but the place was empty and there were other pairs at tables for four. Talk about pissing people off before you even started. I mean we basically decided to have a snack rather than a meal because we didn’t like our (also very wobbly) table.

Called on the way to the National theatre to check we'd be OK for drinks & food after the performance. "Yeah, be here by 9.40...you'll be good, kitchen closes at 10 & bar closes at 10.30." Hotfoot it from National at 9.20, different 'welcomer' who said: drinks only. Us: But we were told we could eat Welcomer: No, kitchen's closed Us: but we were told it closed @ 10. We came and asked earlier.... Welcomer: Can't you see? the lights are off Sadly we went in as it was getting late and thus gave drinks and crisps money to this once great place. We had dodgy service in the summer but it was a lovely sunny spot so let it go. Twice bitten and like many on here, we won't be back. There's an amazing selection of places along the South Bank these days and no need to reward such arrogance and poor service.

Arrogant-seeming staff and very average food. The barmen appear to regard the bar as their own special little fiefdom and resent custom from those they consider insufficiently trendy or hipster or too old. Highly embarrassing.

So sad to see this place going down hill so fast. As we have enjoyed get togethers here in the past, we met for a few drinks and snacks as a treat night out out on the Southbank. Whist my girlfriends were all on form, it was sad to see the lack-luster and "dont care" service for the very high-priced offerings from Benugo. Confusion reigned as our order was wrong two times and on the second time it was not even worth persisting with the complaint, as the bar staff were so unhelpful. £11 for cheese toasty - I would expect a good one with some sides but not today. What a shame as it used to be very good.

Hard to find with directions. We have come here fir several years before a play. But the name had changed from benugo to BFI Bar and kitchen. It is around the corner OFF the eater front where the bfi restaurant is. Very confusing. Food was good. Lighting was terrible. They moved one of the 4 table lamps from our table to another so the people could read the menu. A temporary situation we were told.

I was with friends who were treating me so I could not complain at the time. I chose a main course of hake. It came in a puddle of what appeared to be and tasted like yoghurt with a handful of potatoes that tasted stale. I have never posted a bad review of a restaurant before, I usually just chalk it up to experience but this was such nasty food, I was shocked by it. Its such a shame because the film is the main event and the location is great, diners just want something simple cooked with care .

My daughter has eaten here and thought the food was good, so I booked, weeks in advance, for my husband and I to dine here as part of his birthday treat. On the night, the staff looked disbelieving when I told them why we had arrived, but eventually found our booking. They had just cleaned up after a very large party, but said that if we waited at the bar they would set up a table. No-one thought to offer us a complimentary drink for the inconvenience. Anyway, we looked at our sole, laid table adrift in an ocean of bare ones and decided it lacked something. When I thanked the manager and explained why we thought we would go elsewhere, (for ambience, not feeling that we were on display and,in our own minds, not really 'irritating' the chef who'd just processed 80 covers), we were offered a table in the middle of the busy, noisy bar area. We declined gracefully, and perhaps the manager has realised why that didn't really appeal, and had a good meal at Brasserie Blanc. So,the warning is to confirm any booking made a few weeks in advance and, perhaps, even to check that no large party has been booked in subsequently, if only to avoid that 'runt of the litter' feeling.

Two of our party were vegan but there was only one vegan option on the menu for mains, and no vegan starters or desserts. The single vegan option looked good but was indigestible. The bill was high for a rather unsatisfactory meal. The menu needs refreshing to take account of the many people now following a plant-based diet.

Ate here last weekend with two friends before going to a concert at Royal Festival Hall and have eaten here before during a film interval. The menu isn't extensive and tries to be fancier than necessary - my pork came with good chips and roast beetroot - why not a more traditional green vegetable that would have gone better? The main reason I chose it was because it was the nearest to a meat and two veg meal of all those on the menu. It was tasty and the pork tender and juicy. Very enjoyable. Service was prompt and efficient.

This was our first visit and we booked as we were seeing a film as the BFI. It took at least 15 minutes for someone to come and take our order, despite it not being especially busy. My husband enjoyed the Cornish hake. My paprika spiced roast cauliflower, chickpea, toasted cashews was served sans cashews. I had to request that it was taken back and corrected. Even then, the dish was bland and uninspiring. No reduction in the price was offered for this, which was fairly surprising. We enjoy going to the BFI but with a number of alternative restaurants nearby, I don't think we'll be going back to this venue.

Starter of asparagus was OK but not hot and main course of vegetarian pasta was only just warm with none of the nuts promised and very little sauce. Although it's not expensive, simple dishes like these should not be leaving the kitchen like this. This restaurant really needs to get it's act together!

The food is OK, the ambience warm and welcoming, and the prices not outrageous. But if you order bar food at the bar, they will whack a service charge on everything you order. From what I understood on querying it, if you just order drinks, no service charge, but if you order even just a bowl of chips along with the drinks, suddenly the service charge goes on everything (the service being that someone will bring the chips out to you). Seriously? Just put the prices up and be honest about it.

Nice atmosphere in the restaurant and although a bit busy we did not wait long to place the order nor for the food to arrive (which is always good!). I started with some pumpkin tortellini, crispy sage, pine nuts and goat’s cheese and I was really pleased with both the presentation and the portion of the plate. My main was spicy broccoli orecchiette, ricotta & toasted pine nuts and I absolutely enjoyed it! I love spicy food and I have to admit the spiciness was just right. I also had a taste of the beetroot gnocchi, and again I was not disappointed. All the flavours were balanced and again the plate was well presented. I could not go without ordering truffle fries (nice alternative to the standard fries, very delicate taste). I ended my meal with the chocolate fondant and caramel sauce. On the menu it states to allow 10 minutes for it to be delivered. Mouthwatering, worth the wait!

The thing I like about this place is that it manages to combine atmosphere, good food, great value and the speed needed for people dining before a film or show. We had the charcuterie board to share as a starter, good although could have done with not being quite so cold. Then for mains I had steak which was cooked perfectly and they substituted chips for a sale with no quibble, my partner had the burger which was also good. The service was impeccable and the value excellent.

Friendly, attentive and understanding that we were off to see a show (no super surprise) and helped to make the whole evening enjoyable. First visit here as I’d usually eat elsewhere when I’m in the area, but, will definitely return for the ambience in the Bar & Kitchen as much as all that the BFI and the Southbank offers.

My friend and I went here on Sunday before seeing a film at the Bfi. Initially we had wanted lunch there but were told they were only serving brunch so we went elsewhere. We then returned before our film for a coffee and saw they were doing a coffee and pastry offer. We were served by a really nice guy who told us that unfortunately there was only one pastry left so we said that was a shame but okay we’d share it. He said he’d check to see the kitchen to see if more were coming out. The problem was in the meantime, as my friend noticed, one of his colleagues gave away the pain au chocolat that was ours to another customer! We waited and waited and then saw a few of the staff having a big discussion obviously about this, and then our drinks arrived but no pastry. And no mention of the pastry. The waiter went back to the kitchen and then came out with a pastry for us. Annoyingly after all this hassle we forgot to produce our membership cards to get our discount. Benugo is in a great position and location but I have to say, as a Bfi member, the service over the years is always very unpredictable and patchy which is a letdown.

This restaurant is close by where i live, so me and my girlfriend always go there for casual dinner after hard day... Sadly, it could be very very nice and comfy dining space, but after visiting this place every week it just gets worse and worse...Menu changes are not the best, most of the times they wont have everything on the menu.. And the food for the price they offer is way too expensive..As i said, it's a place next to home for a dinner when you are tired and dont want to travel far or fine dining...However, I keep coming to this place because they will always find a table for us, if not immediatelly then we can wait at the bar area which is really nice, cozy and amazing vibe! And 5 stars for the service... never ever was dissapointed about it. The waitress Andrea is super friendly and attentive and helpfull, and most importabtly not to the level where you feel annoyed or so.. if not Andrea, her colleague (gentelman with glasses? Pardon me, shame that I don't remember the name) will make you feel welcome and leave a smile on your face for sure!!!!All in all, not the place Ive been recomending to my friends, but for a relaxed dinner 5min walk from home (or if you work close by-after work) definatelly give it a go! (Not once, couple of times in order to 'get' what the place really is about).

I've eaten here before on a number of occasions and quite enjoyed it. This time it was suspiciously empty. When I looked at the menu I saw why. Burgers or fish goujons.....er that was it!! What happened to the fish pie and other dishes? The waiter was most apologetic and said lots of other people weren't happy with the change.I voted with my feet. Do they know what they're doing?

Well well well, it looks like a restaurant (Carluccio etc) and it’s a good location if waiting for a train. However, it’s basically a pretty standard sandwich place, so don’t expect table service, good wine, warm food or any sort of atmosphere. Oh and there’s a pigeon issue. You’ve been warned.

We lunch at Benugo Southbank (at the BFI) every week and the main reason is because we receive such brilliant service from one of the waiters in the restaurant called Neil (the others are good too, but he's the best!!). The food is very good, menu changes quite often, and there's a variety of snack food and restaurant meals. Nice wines, reasonable prices, excellent service. All in all a very pleasant dining experience.

Very nice meal before a trip to the National Theatre. The chicken schnitzel was a fairly small portion, so if you're a big eater you may need a side. My ravioli was delicious (very creamy sauce), as was the schnitzel. The lemon posset for pudding was gorgeous. The service was very friendly and it was nice to sit in the window and people-watch. A very good option on the Southbank.

Restaurant was busy but seemed understaffed. Took ages for someone to come and take our order and for each course to arrive. Food was particularly disappointing. Had the asparagus and crispy egg to start. Seemed like it had been under the hot lamps for too long as the asparagus was dried out and wrinkled. My husband had the squid which had definitely been left to dry out for too long. I had the fishcake starter as my main course, which was underseasoned. Location is cool and buzzy but the food & service didn't live up to the venue.

On a quiet Monday evening at 7.45 we asked for a table having had drinks in the bar. In the bar, the barman said that his house Rose was not very nice, so we asked for house white...to be told this was not very good either...we opted for a Pinot Grigio - which was completely unremarkable as well.Having ordered another bottle at the table and a pint of Murphy's, and ordered, we waited 10 minutes before the brinks arrived. We advised that we wanted food quickly. The food arrived just 15 minutes before two of our party were attending a 9.00pm performance nearby. 3 burgers - average...one plate of the Chicken which was overcooked, dry and only warm. No time for sending back....a great shame and we will not be back! Our server, Natalia, from Poland was very nice and helpful, but the Kitchen is at fault.

I hired the Drawing Room Bar for a birthday party and would really recommend it. It's got a 1920s vibe to it, with great lighting and book-cases on the walls. It has lots of seating and space for people to mingle (capacity is 50 people.) Estella and the team were really helpful both in advance and on the night. Everything ran smoothly and the food was great. If you're looking for a good space for an event it's worth checking it out.

An informal, modern, med inspired restaurant adjacent to the BFI, ideally suited to an early evening meal before a film. Good, seasonal, well presented food. Hidden bar behind a bookcase if you want drinks or cocktails somewhere a little quirky after the film!

I am reviewing the Benugo in Regents Park, amongst the Rose Gardens and opposite the Regents Park University. I was totally amazed at this excellent tea garden and restaurant. Friendly, helpful staff and amazingly good food for breakfasts (until 11am, and after that a selection of Pizza, freshly made before your eyes, fish dishes etc.) I had Scones with Strawberry Jam and clotted cream that were far better than any others to be found. (and I tried these in at least two leading Hotels!). Their selection of cakes and baked goods for tea is unsurpassed. I seldom give a rave review, but they deserve it! Well done Benugo.!

We were a large party of 17 of all ages and all family. I did the booking online and then exchanging emails Estelle. With her help we eventually got everyone's orders sorted out in advance. When we arrived they had given us the drawing room which was fabulous. The long table was perfectly and attractively set with fresh flowers and there were a few sofas and chairs for when the children got restless. Service was faultless, the food divine, I had the catch of the day and it was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food, we stayed as long as we liked and had a most marvellous time.Would go back in an instance, so well looked after. Recommended.

Went here after being at the national theatre as wanted to try somewhere different .When ordering drinks my wife and our friend order the chilli mamacita ,the waitress then turned round and said it was quite hot and many sent it back saying they didn't like it - our friend then choose another one , meanwhile the mamacita wasn't bad and not too hot!We ordered mains including the burger, vegan club sandwich which came with chips .When they arrived they asked what condiments we wanted with them and naturally asked for ketchup only to be told they had run out as they made it fresh. Now if I'm not mistaken, there's nothing that fresh that they shouldn't have been able to make at least 2 days worth - very disappointing .

The Drawing Room is excellent private hire cocktail bar for all types of occasions. I've spent seven years hosting private birthday parties at various venues around central London. By far, Estella and her team made this the easiest event to organise in my experience. Estella ensure my birthday was a success from booking the venue to sorting out the food and birthday cake. The room itself is behind a hidden a book case and down a little corridor where you will find the bar. The bar itself comes with a range of sofa and leather chairs with a big central space for standing guests. There is a small coat room to the side with lift access. This was ideal for my friends who needed a quiet space at my party. I’ve upload a 360 picture for you to see the whole room. All my guests gave excellent feedback on the food, drinks, prices and location. While the secret bar is difficult to find, it wouldn’t be much of a secret if it was obvious. On the night the staff was friendly and very helpful when additional requests were made to them throughout the evening. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for affordable venue in central London for a party with family and friends this is the ideal location for you.

Menu showed promise but the staff, while well meaning seemed off their game. Wine took ages to come, all a bit off kilter trying to get the right cutlery on the table but that would've been entirely forgotten had the food been any good. The woody ends on my asparagus starter had not been properly removed, they were under cooked. My steak was underdone and served rare, the chips were hard and the olives in the mixed salad were circa 1975 tinned food quality. My husbands lamb chops - a substitute he agreed to as the main lamb dish was finished - was extremely underdone to the point of being cold on the inside.Very poor all round.

The location is great and depended upon by Southbank visitors so it is actually important to meet a reasonable standard. The service was very good but compliments stop there. The food portions were ridiculously small (a thimble of gazpacho is not cool) and the cannelloni dish is accurately described as four hard, over cooked crab spring rolls the size of my thumb with a smear of crab sauce. This is not cannelloni or any appealing variation of anything else. Once again, not cool and rather expensive. We left annoyed and hungry and went elsewhere for a snack before the curtain call. I understand you were trying out a new menu, you should do this without charge perhaps with staff before foisting it on customers. Someone else said "cynical rip-off", they were correct. We won't be returning.

I've been using the bar and restaurant for quite a while (mostly the bar). In the past, the set-up in the bar, comfy seating and low lighting, seemed like a good fit to the requirements of the clientele and the capacity seemed about right too, although you could always expect it to be busier on a Friday or Saturday evening. In general, it had a nice atmosphere, was slightly tucked-away and so a perfect place to for a drink and a chat; maybe before or after a film. Now it just seems too busy a lot of the time and the old atmosphere has evaporated. The restaurant is hit and miss. I've had some nice meals there but on other occasions they have failed to meet the required standard. One memory is of an overpriced steak served with an undercooked potato gratin. On this occasion, the gratin was replaced by another, equally undercooked. I do like the restaurant but would not be confident enough to book a table for an important occasion. The staff are mostly very nice. The above mentioned steak dish was refunded in full because the restaurant manager (I think), doing something nearby and with super hearing, overheard my partner and I muttering about it and intervened. No one has ever showed any of them how to pour a pint though which can be a bit frustrating. Nowadays they are often overwhelmed and taking several minutes to make a cocktail in a busy bar increases the level of frustration. It used to be a favourite venue and, obviously, is still particularly convenient before or after seeing a film. It's loosing its charm now though.
