This place is no longer open.and hasn't been for quite a while .we went on Wednesday and found out it's closed. What a waste of time

What has changed here? It used to be brilliant. Always fresh chips and amazing scraps and a smell that coaxed you in. Chips are terrible now, scraps are awful and so is the smell. Been twice in last 3 weeks but will be going again. Sadly something significant has changed and it’s not for the better. Several recent reviews are poor also. It’s Google rating remains ok but this is based on historical reviews which will change. Please please go back to what you were doing previously, it was a winning combination. Finally reality has caught up with the new owner. This should be a lesson to anyone buying a successful business. Don’t change what works, sure enhance, add to but keep the fundamentals in place. I am sad for anyone whose business fails, but this business did not deserve to succeed as was poor since it was taken over. NOW closed permanently! The public have voted with their feet. Sadly we now do not have a fish and chip shop in the town centre.

I popped in today for a sit down meal, last time was 30yr ago as a teenager! Absolutely brilliant service, warm welcome, and most importantly fresh fish and freshly cooked chips . Genuine old school chippy All the team are sound and really good service. Keep up the good work

Since it's changed hands the service level has gone downhill waited 30 mins for my food to come out they got another person's bill wrong you have to get your own cutlery they don't bring it to you if you go here make sure you've got a couple hours to spare and check your bill before paying I won't be returning when it was old Bentley's it was a fantastic place shame it's gone to the dogs

It cost me £30 for 3 meals and they where disgusting batter where black it was awful we left it

Nice fish and chips when we went so no complaints I have read other reviews saying it’s changed and not as good I can’t say that as it’s my first visit and it was ok. Could have been a few more chips in the portions

How can you go from being the best chippy in Newark to the worst? Absolutely awful chips. Person serving slating other members of staff for being lazy plus absolutely zero customer service skills. Awful!!!

Not same used to be brilliant but now. Waste of money. chips soggy dark brown. peas cold. sausage had green inside ( brought for dog) pie bottom burnt. didn't like look of fish. most ended in bin. never mind unless female server. looking how you paid cash its not going in till. refused to give a receipt. Stick to market place for food.

Very good fish and chips, one of the best I've had in a while! The haddock was very tasty and the chips were nice and crispy. I recommend the curry sauce as well.

I have just had large fish and chips10 past 6 in the evening. A large fish is two small fish and the batter was inedable. Not burnt but dry grease. The chips were well done with little black bits on some which looked they had been dropped on the floor. Disgusted.

Overcooked, possibly just refried from dinner black and black bits from the not cha he'd oil on chips. Greasy and horrible, avoid!

Went for a sit down lunch on Friday 15/9 and ordered cod roe and chips with some batter bits. Having previously had excellent meals here this was absolutely awful. Everything was over cooked to a darkish brown colour and swimming in oil / lard. When asked how my meal was when paying I commented on the above issues but was given no explanation. Don't think I will be returning again.

Been here about 5 times in the past been excellent food..went today and the fish and chips and mushy peas were awfull....fish looked way overcooked batter was very brown and dripping in fat on my tray ..chips not much better threw most in the bin and cost about 21 quid for me and partners meal and 2 cans of pop..what's happened here,? Won't be going again Yes cheap enough but needs to be edible..like many people l don't like to make a fuss or scene.i gave the food the benefit of the doubt..we found somewhere to sit in Newark to eat...not sure how it could be rectified as the fat was horrible and brown and started dripping out when we started to eat the fat was a problem looked like it needed changing ..it is what it is ...as said the food before was fantastic that's why I've always popped in when visiting Newark ....from how it was to what we had today it was a bit shocking

Superb piece of haddock, crispy batter, excellent service, nothing too much trouble. Reasonable cost. I'll be back

Stopped here on Saturday food was good, service was slow as it wasn't busy only 6 people in the restaurant maybe takeaway would be a better option

Bentley...fish and Chip shop/ restaurant. Me and my brother visited this venue for the first time. The place is in two parts, 1st part is the que up fish and chip shop. The second is the sit-down restaurant. We did the restaurant part, and the venue was clean and well maintained. The menu was simple to follow with plenty of options. The food here is delicious. There are toilets on site that are well maintained and clean. This place is a family-friendly and disable friendly site in close walking distance to the town square. This is a good place yo come to if you are hungry. The staff are polite and friendly.

Whilst on the market had fish cake and chips at a discount price for traders also my son had a mister slush which he said was delicious

I don't like leaving bad reviews as I am aware that this is somebody's livelihood but I feel that on this occasion I must as the food supplied was less than good - overcooked brown chips, hard burnt batter covering tiny fish portions. The location is in a great position, the staff friendly and helpful, the service was good so what a shame about the food. Judging by the amount that other customers left on their plates we were not alone. Hopefully this is just a bad day and reading other reviews the general offering must usually be of better quality. Sadly I will not return to find out.

Just wandered why ordering through bentleys is more expensive than ordering with just eat when already paying a delivery fee

We had takeout fish and chips and the staff were so friendly offered to cook us the fish completely from fresh or if we were happy to have the fish in the cabinet. They also had different flavors of salt and let us try it on some chips first to see if we would like it before putting on our own chips. The Chinese salt was my favorite. The fish was so tasty and the batter was nice not too oily. Really good food, well priced and smashing services 10/10 if we're ever back at Newark will definitely be back

Top food and top service! Staff here are incredibly friendly and very personable. Quite clear that they have pride in their business. At the time of serving, they were encouraging customers to try some free portions of chips with trialled salts. I thought that was a very nice touch. The food itself was top notch and made to order (we had takeaway). Came out piping out and was delicious. Prices are very reasonable. In this current climate, get out there and support your local businesses. We are from Doncaster but if we were local then we would be regulars. Great job to all the lovely staff at Bentleys.

Chips were fantastic, had the box meal and couldn’t fault anything in there! Would deffo have again oh and the gravy is like no other!

We used to look forward to our Saturday lunch here when visiting Newark. But no more, never again. Since it was sold (taken over) the quality has dipped significantly. Today we had to wait 40 minutes for our food and when it arrived the chips...

Went for some chips, sausage and peas at the takeaway. Had a large chips as hungry and partner only wanted a few. Service very friendly and decent value for the portion size. The actual taste of the chips were bland even with lots of salt and vinegar. Mushy peas which were far from mushy and a good old dirty pink chip shop sausage which had some flavour. The chips were bland, and lots of over done and some burnt. The fryers need a change of cooking oil/fat peas were just cooked and again no flavour may has well had tinned marrowfat peas. Very poor food.

The whole experience was horrible. My fish was dripping in fat and had black bits on the batter. The actual fish was very nice and fresh. My chips were soggy and undercooked. I put in a special request for only a very few chips and I could have fed an army on the amount I had. I was offered sauce but they didn't have any !! I asked for a pot of green tea 45 minutes after arriving a pot of black tea arrived. I had to request another pot. The waiting time was far too long. In total I was there one and half hours. The girls working were running backwards and forwards like headless chickens. I will NOT be going again!!!

Eat here quite regular with my children, staff are always more than happy to cater for my fussy children. Staff are very friendly and polite. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed the food when it eventually came. However the service is really is shocking, the other reviews are not exaggerating. It would have been quicker to catch your own fish and grow your own potatoes than grab the attention of a waitress and get your order in. We had to ask at least 4 times to place an order and still didnt get what we asked for. We weren't the only customers pulling our hair out, at one point we all started actually laughing about how bad it actually was. At least the food is decent when it eventually came.

The food is great. Service is hit and miss. I have had food loads of times here. Usually the service is prompt. Twice now in the last month, I have walked out after sitting at a table for 10 minutes. On those occasions staff seem harassed and struggling, even if the restaurant is half empty. I am guessing it is inexperience, and running takeaway, restaurant and delivery from one counter. Yet also in the last month, on other days, the service has been perfect. I would still go back. But now I can read the signs of staff stress and chaos when I arrive, so would leave immediately on those days. Definitely people should support this restaurant. The basics are good and the rest just needs time to resolve as staff get trained.

For the first time ever I was extremely disappointed with our lunch last week. Many of the tables had not been cleared. The sevice was diabolical. After 20 mins I had to ask if we could have our drinks, we then waited another 20 minutes for our meal. I had scampi and my husband had haddock , both were massively overcooked and we struggled to get our fork into it. Lots of other people were complaining. Not a very good experience at all!!

First visit today and won't be back. Got our cod home, unwrapped and very greasy, the batter had gone soft. We then went to eat the fish minus the fatty, soft batter, and it smelt dreadful. Inedible and went in the bin. Shocking experience, we were really looking forward to it and were hungry, but not going to risk gone off fish!

Well all the reviews are fake as Fish and chips not only is on expensive side but it is just awful. Avoid if you can. Trust me .

Waited in queue to go in, but then decided to have a sit inside, it seemed very nice and well decorated, a few dirty tables that were soon cleared. Waited 15 minutes and no one came to check if we'd like to order. So I went to counter and asked for someone, very pleasant and took our order. Waited a further 15 minutes and neither our drinks or food arrived, so we cancelled the order. Others seemed to be enjoying their food, be prepared for a wait.

I went past about 12.15pm ish today ,on a cold and very wet day in Newark ! With nobody waiting inside to be served I decided to pop in & get some chips to takeaway ! .The restaurant side at the back appeared to be very quiet or empty as waiting staff on duty were stood about.The service for my small chips on a tray priced at £1.65 was very pleasant .I was able to splash salt & vinegar on myself in this chip shop as some others do apply it themselves during this covid pandemic. I took them outside & wile walking down the street to catch up with my wife .I put them on offer & we both agreed that these chips weren't the usual standard as of previous visits .Barely luke warm & very dry even though they had vinegar on them ,must of been waiting out of the fryer for a long time, they had to be eaten very quickly or would of been stone cold ,not great on this occasion, very disappointing visit ! Update -on Saturday 1st October 2022 Fancied some fish & chips so I thought I'd try the restaurant, once inside I asked a young girl about a table for 2 & was told just find a table ! Actually quite a few tables were occupied with some others still having left over food plates on them.After finding a free table & sitting down ,moving a stray left over chip ,I checked out the menu in surroundings which I would describe as not the most glamorous. After waiting & waiting I ended having to ask if I could place an order,this was taken by another young girl staff member.Wile waiting I noticed other customers were having a few issues with their orders which were incomplete ,even one chap asked to cancel due to the waiting about another table asked for their tea drinks now they actually had finished the meal .There appeared to be no service structure or leadership on the restaurant floor for the young staff on duty,they do need guidance to clear/clean tables & improve their interaction skills when greeting people, taking orders & serving customers etc .Just general simple routine steps need to be put in place to improve the sitting inside experience & gain repeat business from visiting customers. Saying that once my mini fish special order came ,I couldn't fault it, freshly cooked ,nice & hot with plenty of chips & not bad size mini fish ,curry sauce was fine along with a diet coke drink ,very good value for £6.50 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was shopping in Newark & dropped in for lunch, I decided to have the " lunchtime special " it was a bit of a wait BUT well worth it because the fish ( absolutely perfect) chips were freshly cooked, I'd recommend this fish and chip shop to everyone.
