The best thing about the cheesy chips I brought from here was the sachet of tomato sauce to go on them! I visited on a Friday lunchtime so you would expect fresh, boiling hot chips. Nope. The chips were cold and didn't even melt the cheese. The chips were also hard and tasted funny. What a waste of money.

Got to be the best fish and chips in Newark . Go in a little early as there is generally a queue. Street parking available on site . Go and try it you won't be disappointed.🐳🐳

Been a while since I ordered here. It hasn't changed, chips are fresh and hot, the fish is great and the service is good too.

The food is mediocre, the staff are awful! The young girl, she's maybe about 16ish years old she's very polite.. but the other two older ladies are rude as hell. Esp the woman who has no teeth. She has poor hygiene and even dropped the tray on the floor and proceeded to use it and then got pissdd off when I asked for a new/clean one that hadn't been face down on the floor. But like I said, she has terrible hygiene herself so I truly don't think she understood why it would bother someone. They really are incredibly rude in there. The owners really should get new staff. The fish had a weird taste and the portions are incredibly small with high prices. Wont be going back again.

I've been looking to find a good chippy in Newark and have tried several. It wasn't until my neighbour who works at NNG station brought me sausage and chips one night from Appleton Gate Fish bar that I realised this is the one for me. Tried it again and found the chips to be excellent as well as the fish. Even though I've to travel from Farndon across town to get here, it is well worthwhile.

This is the only fish and chop shop we use now in Newark. Everything is well cooked and delicious! The chips are fluffy but with a lovely colour on the outside.

Have used this chippy for a few years and have usually found it to be ok. However my last visit left me with food poisoning. The fish I ordered left me throwing up all night and the next day. Not sure if the running of this chippy has changed hands recently, certainly the serving staff were different this time. Anyway regardless of this its safe to say I will not be using this chippy again. I only hope that the owners read these reviews and improve their hygiene standards before they really hurt someone!!

This has been our family favourite chippy for over 5 years nows, staff are really friendly and efficient! Food is always fresh and tasty, definitely the best chip shop in newark. Was nervous to go in due to covid-19 but all safety measures were in place, even had umbrellas outside for customers to use on rainy days what amazing customer service, well done to all the staff keep up the good work!

Excellent food excellent service

One star only because I can't give a zero. Only went to Appleton Gate fish bar as the reviews seemed positive. However, it was a disaster from the point of ordering. I asked for two haddock with small chips. What I got was two over cooked cod which made the flesh watery and mushy. The batter was as crispy as a wet bit of cardboard with the same flavour. The small chips I asked for was in fact two gargantuan portions, which I hear you say, I should be grateful for. Yes, if I was feeding the 5000. But it was just me and my partner in a campervan of limited space! No room for the Mount Everest of chips! So yes. Most of it ended up in the bin, adding to climate change destruction somewhere in the world..( that bit may be true but it was just artistic license). We did also get a pineapple fritter and prayed to all the gods that this small item would redeem this sad fish bar....unfortunately upon opening the wrapping paper a tsunami of grease exploded all over. Needless to say after forcing the well lubricated fruit down my gullet I felt a tad unwell. Hence this review. To warn others of a dreadful experience to be avoided at all costs!

Not bad but previous week the fish and chips were great. Let down on our second visit of 3 weeks ago. Fish was dry and not slot of it, chips too were dry.

I had add kebab and chips on a tray but unfortunately they was so much Grease it was dripping I could not eat any of it not use the chip shop ever again

The fish or pie special is just the right amount of food that I'm not throwing away lots of chips!!! Georgina was cooking tonight and it was like old times where people used to be queuing out of the doors!!! I love this place and want nothing more than it to keep its reputation as the best chippy in town!!!

Fantastic place with excellent food, you always struggle on Friday evening, which shows how popular it is.

Used this place for many years whilst living just up the road so , after dropping off my son, thought I’d take the opportunity to return as it was always so good! It would appear to have changed ownership in the interim and I was treated to inedible food! The fish in particular was awful!! It had obviously been standing for some time and was cold, claggy and smelly. It was also thrown into the wrapping by the girl serving and broken into three pieces. Even my dogs wouldn’t eat it!! The chips also had been standing for some time and were lukewarm at best. At least the mushy peas were ok! Don’t think I shall be returning to this establishment when I’m next in Newark ☹️

Chips are disgusting every time I've been. Fish is OK. Staff are rude especially the young woman who spends alot of time flirting and joking like she is out on the town. Wouldn't recommend at all.

I Normally go to the kebab house round the corner for kebabs, but was in the area and thought to give the place a try! the kebab was to die for! The owner said that they’ve not long changed their kebabs to a new brand... delicious! Don’t think I’ll be going anywhere else! worth the travel

Lovely fish and chips. The staff rather than the owners are sometimes a bit lacking in customer service, but that adds to the traditional chippy feel. The deep fried haloumi is a bonzer speciality.

Friendly and great fast service

In the area so though it was worth a try it was encouraging there was a small que outside the door I asked for fish but was told it will be sometime so opted for a chicken kebab and my friend had a lamb donner we got back in to the car and opened them to have a munch. My chicken was clearly old cold and lumpy my friends was cold and very uncooked it was very disappointing

Local chippy, been our go to for years. Not cheap but consistently good, fresh, hot food.

Friendly staff and a fairly quick turn around from walking in the door to food in hand, the chips aren't too bad, neither are the prices, however I wouldn't order a saveloy, twice I have had one from here and both have been 'exploded' and mearly mush. They tend to do them on order in the microwave, so not exactly the best.

The fish and chips were OK. Nothing special. The kebabs are terrible. Plastic sauces. Not fresh salad. Shame really. This has put me off donner kebabs.
