Bengal Spice in Aberdeenshire

Visiting the Peterhead area for a couple of days with my wife , we fancied some Indian food We were recommended to visit the Bengal Spice in Mintlaw From the outside we weren’t expecting much So glad we were wrong Genuinely the best and tastiest curries we have had in a long time We have a couple of decent Indian restaurants we use in Dundee but this place knocks them for six Took us back to the days of Jacob/ Royal Oak/ Malabar , high praise indeed Well worth the visit if you are anywhere near

Shopping at co op next door. One of your employees was also Shopping. I have never been next to a person who smelled so bad. Working in a food establishment, it tells me...YOU HAVE NO PERSONAL HYGIENE IN PLACE....

Went in and ordered two meals to takeaway, poppadoms and accompaniments . Wasn’t cheap by any means - £32. My daughter’s saag meal was fine she said. However mine, mixed platter was awful. One solitary prawn and the other meats were pretty meagre and dry with this very odd sweet curry sauce. I was told when my food came I had complimentary poppadoms ( not really as I’d paid for them) and a salad. Said salad was box of limp brown lettuce and tomatoes on the turn. Many better Indian restraints and takeaways around . Won’t be back, which is a shame because for a good while it would have been the best around. Higher prices, poor quality ingredients and tiny portion sizes

My wife and I went to the Bengal spice in mintlaw on Saturday 14th Oct 2023 for our wedding anniversary,we booked a table for 18.15, arrived at 18.10,and from then on it went downhill, we have been to this place a few times previously so we were looking forward to having a good meal (This Indian restaurant in my opinion WAS the best In Aberdeenshire) we eventually got seated although the table wasn’t set up with cutlery etc, we then waited 35 mins for someone to take our order,we ordered a couple of drinks,only cola as i was driving, this was quite flat and probably out of a large bottle,I do appreciate that they were busy and there was a constant stream of take away meals going out, however we were completely ignored even when the table next to us were placing orders, getting more drinks being served their food or drinks etc,another 30 mins went by before our starters arrived,which quite frankly were not worth the wait, we finished our starters and waited…..and waited, what we found particularly frustrating was the fact that two tables of four diners who arrived later than us had finished their main meals before we even got ours ,they didn’t clear our table despite walking past us many times with an empty trolley, at no time were we approached and asked if the food was ok or would we like another drink, eventually at 19.55 my wife who is usually much more tolerant than me said I’ve had enough of this and got up to leave, I went to pay for the food that we actually did receive and they wanted to charge us for the main courses as well !, which I totally refused to accept, I paid for what we had and left, there wasn’t even an apology and the person serving even tried to deny giving preferential treatment to other guests, it’s actually quite sad that the level of customer service has become atrocious ,and so bad that we will never return, or recommend to anyone.

Ok. Just returned from The bengal spice mintlaw. Below is a portion of Bombay Potatoes! Apparently this is how they served them. The guy who answered the phone, and who in his words “heats them up”, tells me there is never any sauce! All of the times we’ve had Bombay potatoes from there, they’ve always been like that! Then he had the fricking audacity to insinuate that I must be thinking of another takeaway! The black bit’s are seeds!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 I'm 58 and I know potatoes, eyes, and how they grow! I used to grow crops of potatoes years ago. Eyes must always be dug out. But by then, potatoes are well past their use by date! I definitely think a man who cooks with potatoes, should know how potatoes reproduce. The purple and black bits must always be removed. Especially in commercial food premises! We paid £4.50 for that portion! Buy a packet of Schwartz potatoes mix. . It's far more authentic than the Bengal Spice And in the brown bag is a popadom jigsaw! Crushed popadoms!!!! But one thing which is always the rule is, if you have a returning customer, never ever argue with them, nevertheless insinuate, and use poor quality foods. And when a customer say’s they have photos, you should start worrying. The popadoms and Bombay potatoes shouldn’t have been replaced. Not just because the food premise’s have failed seriously, but customer service is one of the mostly important thing Avoid Bengal Spice’, in Mintlaw. It’s gone downhill! I should have listened to people who don’t go there any longer! And a Ps from my son. The chicken pakoras he had were over cooked. And he said they were just like 'chicken balls' from Cantonese take aways. Not pakoras!

When ordering the meal asked for recommendations for something was told to check menu… food came and the curry’s themselves were lovely phoned to give feedback and say this but also the Bombay potatoes and nans were very very bland compared to normal.. complaint was disregarded and told no one else has complained tonight…

Spur of the moment decision to visit Bengal Spice after a busy day. Service was excellent and friendly. Food was delicious and portion was more than enough. Naan bread needs a special mention- best I have had. Very reasonably priced too Will be back

Supposed to be 4pm opening but I've never managed to get anyone to answer the phone, 16:17 now so let's try again!!! Nope just ringing away, poor show, off to another Indian takeaway,,,, Again,,, and they all say keep it local ha!! They have a second number, but alas same, looking at reviews on trip advisor it looks like they have shrunk the portions but kept the same price, 16:23 now but still no answer, def away to different takeaway

We ordered the set menu for two. I was amazed that the price had risen by almost £5. I know everything has gone up in price but that’s a crazy jump. Now, I wouldn’t have minded so much had the portion sizes stayed the same. The portion sizes had diminished at an almost insulting level. The chicken tikka starter for two had 6 tiny pieces which equalled no more than half a chicken breast. The onion bahjis were undercooked and mushy. The pilau rice had hard chunks of boiled rice mixed in and the main curry dishes barely reached half of the plastic tub. We first used them 2 years ago and raved about the place, now they are taking the pee even with the massively increased prices. Quality, quantity have gone way downhill with price climbing hugely.

Visited for a takeaway, been several times for sit down meal. Food has always been excellent but portion sizes seem to be on the decline. Smaller and smaller portions. Especially prawn puri, it’s like a half portion.

Staying in the area and fancied and curry and this place really delivered. All of the dishes were really tasty and even though they weren't as spicy as we'd like, an extra dish of hotter curry sauce was no trouble. Friendly staff, good service and great to see so much choice of specials and different dishes on the menu alongside all the olf favourites. A really tasty meal, we'll definitely be back.

Always a 10/10 here. Me, my partner and friends always leave completely satisfied. Every seafood dish I've had in the past has been fresh and always well cooked. The past 3 visits I have been ordering their vegan options and they are brilliant. The veg curries are packed with all different things compared to other restaurants in the area... Order the Burnt Spinach Balti, you won't be disappointed!!

Absolutely abysmal service phoned in a order to be told 40 minute wait which is fine got to the restaurant and had an hour wait in there, in that time many people came and went ever the ones who came in to order there food got there food before us, finally got our food and not even an apology about the long wait, got home and the food was terrible chicken was as dry and as tasteless as the sauce needless to say I won’t be back very unhappy customer

Have ordered loads of takeaways from here over the years and the food is excellent but take out service is abysmal... Ordered by phone and we told 30 minutes to collect.. Went on time and had to wait a further 40 minutes along with a group of 12 unhappy customers... (with very limited social distancing). Young lady on the phone still taking take our orders as we all waited she was telling customers .. 20 minutes wait for their order. Nothing makes a customer more unhappy having to wait so so long after being told blatant lies....Come on guys ... be fair to your loyal customers.... We wont be back .

New to the area and thought we would try some Pakora to take away , congratulations possibly the worst we have ever had , ordered two veg and one chicken , veg consisted of six pieces in each box , soggy greasy tasteless lumps and the chicken was also soggy and had a very greasy thick batter , absolutely rank , the accompanying dip tasteless and please note spicy onions are supposed to be spicy , never again total waste of money .... avoid at all cost .

If you want a westernized Indian meal this restaurant is okay. Lamb Kurma didn't even have ANY bite to it. Green food coloring in the Pilau rice? Rasim curry too mild. To be avoided if you are used to eating authentic India food.
