I ordered on deliveroo but felt I must add a google review as well for what I just experienced. I am half Indian and eat a lot of curry. I regularly try new places. This was mind blowing to me. Each dish tastes unique and delicious unlike bland comments for the bland curries ordered below. In particular the mouth watering: okra, keema peas, chicken Ceylon, lamb vindaloo, prawn & puri. I always leave a lot left over but I finished every last bite. 10/10

Food was OK apart from Tarka Dal which they liquidised for some unknown reason. Naga chicken was good and spicy, but all the food quickly went cold as they provide no heaters at the table to keep it warm and serve it in open top dishes. The restaurant itself was freezing cold and despite our requests, no additional heating was provided. They have 3 fan heaters in fixed positions above the tables but these are totally ineffective at providing any warmth.

A friend said he liked this restaurant so went there to sample their range of dishes. Ordered a vegetable balti which was not as described. Found it to be so different from all the other Balti dishes I had at other places such as the Muhib in Brick Lane where this dish is superbly flavoured but not at the Belash. Thee rice, naan and side dish were ok so this place is average overall.

Food was delicious as always. Warm, welcoming reception is standard. Had been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years but due to customer service, not the food, I won't be going back. When it came to paying the bill, the older waiter came with the card machine and pretty much demanded that I add a tip and very rudely asked how much I was adding. I told him that if I were to tip, I would decide how much and leave it in cash. This resulted in him flouncing off with an attitude. The next time I visited, I received the frostiest reception ever, even the Manager whom I have known for over 20 years and who is normally very pleasant, barely acknowledged me. When the waiter came to lay our table, the cutlery was literally thrown down on the table in front of me. This is all very sad but in the same breath, it is most definitely unacceptable. In all the years I have been going there, I have never not left a tip so I was really shocked by the waiter's behaviour but more so by the subsequent behaviour of all the staff especially the management. The food is delicious and although the amount of meat/chicken in the dishes had become sparse it was still my favourite. Sad to say that I won't be back. Feb 2023

A good time was attempted but not had. Ultimately, the downfall of this establishment was due to the lack of paneer in sag paneer. Upon enquiry, the management and chef enlightened us on the secret recipe which featured melting paneer. This was a bare-faced lie. Paneer does not melt. Facts. Otherwise it was delicious and they were very nice. Just bring your own paneer or face disappointment.

Had a meal in Belash tonight and it was very busy with every table occupied but a waiter managed to find us a table for which we were thankful. Took a while to get our drinks and starter order in and looking about there were others that were already seated before we got there that had not had their starters or drinks, but it was busy and me and my wife both understood this due to the busyness of the place. Of note it doesn't help when you've got moped riders from food delivery companies coming in every 5 minutes clogging up the kitchen orders. If you have a restaurant, then the front of house service should be catered for first and foremost. If your business relies so much on take away orders, then close the restaurant and turn the business into a takeaway only. Anyway, we got served our starters eventually and received our mains around 1 hour after arriving. My main issue here is not the waiting time as it was very busy but is of the food. I ordered a chicken tikka dish, and the pieces of chicken were both tough and tasteless. My wife ordered a king prawn dish, and her prawns were small and appeared very pale and not at all pink. All the dishes were very under seasoned and frankly tasteless and bland. The veg curry and Bombay Aloo had a weird sheen and tasted over sweet. In fact, nothing was very tasty at all and was a disappointment. Shame as this place used to very good and was the best Indian restaurant in Crouch End years ago but something has gone amiss. Not sure if it has changed ownership or chefs but it was nowhere as good as I remember it. The prices are good, but I'd rather pay the extra and have a better meal somewhere else in future.

We went there by chance the other day for dinner and ordered a portion of curry to share, as we weren’t too hungry. The food itself was largely ok, although not comparable to some of the best Indian food you get in London. At the end we were told by one of the staff , who was grumpy from the offset, that 30 pounds is the minimum bill at the restaurant and our bill was much lower for a ‘standard customer’. I wasnt planning to be a regular or prepared to spend my hard-earned money to satisfy their self-declared rules. Not going back again.

Great food, terrible service & atmosphere. We walked in and the waiter was immediately rude to my wife and had am attitude of "what are yiu doing here?" Whenever we ordered anything he was gone before we were finished our sentence. When the food came he made some awkward jokes about forgetting parts of the order. And to top it all of at the end, when we were paying, he highlighted that service was not included and asked how much we wanted to add to the bill. When I said I'd pay it as is he was offended that I wouldn't "pay" the tip for his service. A shame because the food was actually good and would've probably come back another time if it weren't for the terribly uncomfortable service.

king prawn balti was poor - a few small and over cooked prawns and loads of undecooked onions filled the takeaway box. The chicken tikka starter was also poor - very tough chicken, plenty of gristle. However the three vegetable curries were not bad - but in no way compensate. It's about time local curry houses like this brought their cuisine into the modern era - I'd order more often but why bother when the food is so poor? I might give you a couple of months and try you again, let's hope the food improves.

I have been visiting this restaurant for many years, however after tonight shall probably not return. I have never complained even at times when the food has taken a very long time to arrive- sometimes over an hour. Tonight we needed to be sure that we would make cinema time. I asked the waiter ( slightly older man) how long the food might take as we were booked to see a film. I was very polite about this, and was in no way being pushy. He responded that it would take as long as the kitchen took, and that we should think about that before arranging to see a film. Sad really, as there are some really nice staff that I have known for many years. Meal ruined so I would give no points for this visit.

A food/restaurant critic once suggested that a a lot can be judged of a restaurant by its toilets. Not that it is a retro-look, it seems that the Belash toilet and washroom facilities have not been updated since the late sixties. The food served appears just as tired, and void of innovation. If you like curry, I suggest this is not the place to go. However, if you're easily charmed and don't mind having several dishes (and courses) made from the same base sauce (the translation for 'balti' literally is 'bucket', in case you didn't know) then this is the place for you. For example, Keema is traditionally a 'dry' dish (that is, *not* in a sauce, or gravy). The Belash version is to take a handful of mince, whack it in the karahi, and DROWN it with the same sauce as my mate had over his 'chicken ghosht'., Coincidentally, the Prawn Puree also had the same sauce over it, just as the Jalfrezi, and Bhuna lamb did...To be fair, the waiters were all smiles; on balance they were trying to impress us. Sadly it wasn't with the food. When we walked in off the street, we (very clearly) asked if they served "KING Cobra" beer. The waiter responded - very positively - that they did, and even confirmed that it was the "one in like a champagne bottle". Bingo! We came in, hung up our coats and sat down ready to order one of these bad boys (each, I hasten to add). Another waiter came and was very keen to put a number on how many poppadoms we'd like on the table. We joked that as long as he brings us those KING Cobras, he can keep the poppadoms coming all evening. Off he went to fetch the POPPADOMS. Right! Let's see those KING Cobras, then? Another waiter came along (who appeared to be in charge of the show) and asked how many (there were eight of us). It was at this point he told us that they DID NOT serve King Cobra. After a short discussion, we established that it wasn't that they'd run out, or hadn't unloaded the van from their trip to the cash and carry earlier in the day, they HAVE NEVER kept the stuff. If I'm being cynical, I'd suggest they tricked us into coming in and ordering (hence the urgency to take an order and get us started on the Poppadoms). But you can forgive someone for being a bit overzealous, especially if they redeem themselves with an out-of-this-world take on Indian cuisine. They didn't. In fact, what they serve should be removed from this planet; it's just so English, i.e., the kind of dishes which taste *like* curry, but actually aren't at all. Frankly speaking, a packaged supermarket brand is loaded with a much more imaginative taste sensation than what the Belash served us on Staurday night. In summary: dated, unimaginative and misleading use of the words, 'Indian', 'curry' and 'cuisine'.

Way back in time when William the Conquerer was a lad, four of us - two couples - used to go to the Belash (almost) every Thursday night for a good quality, uncomplicated North Indian meal, and jolly good it was too. Then the other couple broke up and we stopped going. Fast forward 15-20 years and for no particular reason, we thought one Friday evening, "hey, is the Belash still there?" You never know, so off we went to Crouch End and it was! We went in, and as far as we could tell, same décor, same menu, and unbelievably, SAME PRICES!The menu is absolutely standard fare: Madras, Bhuna, Dansak, Dopiaza, Vindaloo, plus some specials (Shashlik etc), and also - be still my beating heart - a PHALL!! A ridiculously hot curry which I think has been invented for the suicidal British macho palate. It was pretty full with locals as far as I could tell, and waiters were slightly harassed but very friendly. They gave us a strange little garishly coloured plastic bowl full of Bombay mix as we sat down. I had the Lamb Vindaloo (couldn't quite summon up courage for the Phall) and the missus had a Madras, plus some veg, rice and a peshwari nan. A bit of a wait, but not too long. Food was great, as long as you like seventies style North Indian Curries, which I do, and so could not be faulted. And incredible value. About thirty quid for 2, including drinks and coffee. Some of these pretentious modern places will charge double that and you don't even get onion salad!!Great to be back, and we have returned on a regular basis ever since. Clearly a Crouch End Institution, and quite right too.

My family and I have been visiting the Belash at least once a week for the past 15 years. I say at least, because we have been known to go twice in one week! It can get very busy at the weekend, so it's best to book though just turning up is usually fine on other nights of the week. The food and the spices are always fresh and everything is cooked to order. I'd suggest trying some of their more unusual dishes like a Pathia, which is hot yet sweet, or Paneer Shaslick which is cooked in the tandoor. The Tarka Dhal, which is a dish I always use to test an Indian's quality, is very good - rich and thick with plenty of garlic. Onion Bhajees are crisp and not oily, breads all great especially Peshwari Nan and Stuffed Parartha. It's the usual Northern Indian food apart from that, but always well done. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. If you're too tired to visit, they deliver too.
