We visited in December and the place was lively and the staff were very charming. The location is pretty and the pub dog friendly and cosy. The downsides are the menu didn’t cater enough for vegetarians or those with gluten issues ( no gluten free bread for instance) and I found for what you got it was very expensive for a pub . I had roast potatoes, carrots and two other vegetables and was charged £20 (about double what other pubs would charge for the meal in the area) and a Sunday roast meal for three with no wine or deserts came to almost £80 -But overall a nice experience and a lovely pub and the food was good.

Had a very enjoyable lunch here celebrating our wedding anniversary. The food is delicious, the portions very generous and the service from the waiting staff just right. The boiler had broken down so it was a little chilly while we were there but other than that I really liked the ambience. I can recommend the suckling pig and amazing roast potatoes and I also enjoyed my pate starter. The only thing I would change is the wooden boards that everything was beautifully served on - for white china plates - so much more classy - go square by all means - I'm a bit OCD cleanliness wise and I just don't think you can clean a wooden board as easily as you can a china plate. if it wasn't for the boards I'd have given top marks. We were given a lovely complimentary board of delicious chocolate pralines to mark our anniversary which was a lovely surprise and much appreciated. We will be back.

We turned up on time and we had some drinks at the bar before being shown to our table which was upstairs. The restaurant was very busy even though it was a Sunday lunchtime so I would advise anyone to book. The menu has many choices and also a drinks menu to choose from. There were six of us and chose a variety of starters and main courses. From avocado and duck egg to start, mussels, crayfish cocktail and whitebait through to mussels

Went for a meal with a friend. Our waitress was very chatty and friendly, and the service was really good. My meal (scallops) was lovely. My friend had Partridge which was a little dry - she felt the way it was presented (on a board with cabbage served in a separate pan and potatoes in another dish) was fussy and said it made the meal difficult to eat. That frustrated her. Our pudding was great though. I'd definitely go again but I think that just putting food on a plate rather than presenting it on a board (especially when there is gravy involved) is probably a good idea!

Such a lovely building converted with class and an eye for detail.Wonderful barman, mixes great cocktails and is very friendly. The waiting staff are also very friendly if not quite as polished as at other restaurants in this price range. Sadly at 8pm on a Saturday neither of our first choices were left, then neither was my partner’s second choice. Third choice for her and second for me was not ideal. Still, the food we did get was very tasty, nothing exceptional, but solid enough. And the drinks flowed so all good. The cost was on the high side for the quality, but not massively so.Whilst not going to rush back we’ll probably return at some point, perhaps to try Sunday lunch?

Don't be mistaken by the exterior of the Bel & Dragon. Yes it was a church. And inside, you will find it cleverly converted to accommodate diners on the ground floor and additionally on a mezzanine. Foodwise, Bel is a chain of restaurants, and has worked its menu well. Something for every one I would say. We (3) were sharing the premises with a group of 7 or 8 young mums Birthday lunch, a group of dark suited business men, a couple who looked like they had just finished a country walk, and others. We were there for lunch, for which there was a lunchtime menu along with a la carte.Anyway, food was great, whitebait, fish pie, fried haddock, and partridge, followed by an exquisite sharing apple Tarte Tatin.Service was very good and attentive, food was great, surroundings novel and engaging.

We came here after a nice walk, we had booked a table. After being seated we had to ask for water 3 times! Finally we ordered roast chicken that we had had the week before at one of their sister restaurants, which was fantastic there! What can I say other than the same meal here was very disappointing the chicken was cold. The potatoes were so hard you'd break your teeth! The vegetables consisted of pak choy a weird choice for a roast!! Runner beans that had not been prepared just cut up. They were hard and chewy basically we spat them out! There was a small amount of sausage meat. Classed as stuffing! A watery gravy with little taste. Altogether very disappointing food. As for the service........... or the little that we received! It was very poor! No one came near us after our food was served! In the end I walked to the bar and complained. The young man grinned at me and presented my £73 bill!! I was so angry and very disappointed at this stage I choose to pay it and ask for the managers name. I will take this further! We will never ever go back here and I recommend others don't either! Noticed when we got home we had been charged for something we hadn't had but as it was only four pound didn't pursue it further. Reasonable prices and typical food for these types of places. It was years ago we last visited Bel and the Dragon in Godalming. For a birthday dinner we thought we'd try it again. We always loved the building and decor and remembered that the place had some sort of buzz.Well, not anymore. Even though it was a Saturday evening, the restaurant was rather empty at the approximate 8pm slot. We thought this was odd.As we ordered we thought the dishes were rather on the expensive side. Brexit, anyone? No, joking aside, prices on the menu are really high for a place of this type and then they add the so-called service charge of 12.5% Which takes some rudeness to remove from the bill, really. So we had chicken and suckling pig as main course, respectively. Not bad although far from spectacular. The roast potatoes were tough to cut, in part because the "steak knives" had no serrated edges. Why not? Come on people, it's not rocket science......My house red was OK but cost £5 a glass (175ml) excluding service charge, again way too expensive. Leave alone the £9 for a glass of still French rose. All in all, I think it will be years (and years) before we go again. Will check press (and ***tripadvisor***) before going again. And oh yes. We booked the table through OpenTable. We arrived, identified ourselves and were shown the table we had booked. Not one of the better tables even though the place was not busy, as stated above (nor did it become so). To add insult to administrative injury, we received an email halfway the dinner that our reservation had been cancelled. Why oh why? Once home, we found there was a missed call to our landline around 30 minutes into our dinner. What is going on here? Can't get it right.

We hadn't planned to go to the 'Bel and Dragon' but with train disruptions and the tasty looking wine list we wanted to try the food. Friday night at 8pm having not booked we expected to wait. However, quiet enough they found us a table. This only benefitted us as the waitress and service was impeccable. We were offered a glass of fizz each when we sat down and a 'happy birthday brownie board' for dessert. This put a nice shine to the experience and was a gesture well received by my partner. As we were hungry we decided to pre-start with the squid nibble. Cooked perfectly. I then opted for the hefty sized Mussels for starters and at £9 a portion! As expected these were cooked precisely and really tasty. I know we are in Surrey and Godalming is affluent but £11 for starters is expensive for anyone. Also one little quibble would have been a warm finger bowl to clean my hands. My main was superb. I would highly rate the suckling pig! The piece pork was a thick and tender size and complimented well with the spiced apple chutney. The potatoes were soft yet crispy and the crackling finished the dish. Lacking in vegetables we ordered 2 sides to share. These at £4 a portion was a bit steep. But the cauliflower was yummy. My partner chose the Chicken Milanese which she wouldn't recommend. Flattened and breaded she thought it wasn't worth the price. The wine list is one of the main reasons I wanted to try this restaurant. The barman told us a few weeks back they had been voted one of the best wine lists in Surrey. Highly exciting for a wine trade professional like myself. We wanted a nice new world Pinot Noir and Felton Road is one of the best New Zealand producers. Again this followed the premium prices at over £60 but the wine was perfect with both our dishes. Be wary of the automatic optional 12.5% service charge added to the bill. We were in no confusion to get that removed and leave a cash tip. I would unequivocally eat again at the bel and dragon but when the bill came, I wouldn't make it a regular thing. Great food though!

I was familiar with this place years ago when it was very much of its time in the naughties: rather self-important glorified gastro-pub, pricey, austere and "foody". The place I visited tonight for first time in years had stripped the whole vibe back. although you still have the unique feel of being in a former church, and the great space that it offers, the place is more informal, relaxed and appealing. Service was exemplary: really pleasant, attentive, offered to change element in dish for me cos I am veggie. Best part: they noticed my friend had given me a birthday present so they brought me a glass of nice fizz (not Prosecco either!) and some brownies on a "happy birthday" platter! Food was fabulous too. It still is at the higher end of the local price range but worth it!

We have enjoyed several dinners and our son's christening lunch at Bel & the Dragon previously, where we had loved the care, individuality and buzz about the place, but we were very disappointed with our recent visit. Firstly, they managed to cancel our booking, so we arrived to be told we weren't on the reservations list - hardly the welcome we were after.Drinks ordering was slow - I think we'd been forgotten as our order was only taken as the lovely waitress walked past. The menu has barely changed at all in 5 years. Why bother dating it at the top if you don't change it seasonally, particularly to keep variation and interest for returning customers. Very poor.Food was well cooked and presented but where the chefs used to look energised and a buzz came from the kitchen and bounced into the whole restaurant, it was quite the opposite. The lights had not been dimmed and no candlelight on the tables which created a complete lack of atmosphere and charm. We won't be rushing back and sadly I can't see things changing as I suspect this all comes from the top with no care for the experience, the staff or customer but to turnover profit. What a shame, but lots of nearby competition who are getting the formula right.

Sunday Roast ( Suckling pig & crackling) most agreeable but one modest bowl of vegetables between 7 was far from satisfactory and didn't justify the £19 outlay. Staff, however were prompt, friendly and efficient.

Just arrived back from an early evening dinner with my wife. Our first visit and most certainly won't be our last. Lovely friendly welcome and that set the tone for an excellent meal. The food is piping hot, quality ingredients, cooked well and in good portions. Some great flavour combinations. Can thoroughly recommend all the dishes we had - such as the mackerel pate, the duck on pakchoi and the suckling pig was superb. Finished off with an Eton mess (and two spoons!) Our compliments to the excellent chefs and the friendly and attentive front of house staff. Would thoroughly recommend a visit. A hiccup in organisation which was entirely our fault was dealt with good grace and humour for which we are very grateful.

We visited today for Sunday lunch, we were given a table straight away but asked to move as the table was very wobbly. The Beetroot starter was very tasty and was good value, my hubby had Duck egg and Avocado which he enjoyed. My hubby for his main had the crispy Pork which he thought very nice, I choose the Chicken Milanese. The Chicken Milanese was not my best choice, it was moist and the coating was crisp but I am not sure it had the Black Truffle oil on. I felt it a bit boring and tasteless. The pudding, Baked Alaska was scrummy - I wish I had had 2 of them instead of the Chicken. The staff were attentive and pleasant and we would have tipped them but noticed a 12.5 % "Discretionary Service charge" automatically added to the bill and card machine was a little cheeky. All in all enjoyable but at almost £100 for a Sunday Lunch a tad steep.Very large party downstairs who were rather noisy and oblivious to the needs of others - blocking the aisles and reluctant to move to let others pass, shouting across the restaurant to each other etc. did spoil the atmosphere somewhat.

This converted church is a beautiful place to eat. The decor is classy. The waiters were very friendly and fairly attentive. The chef knows what he's doing with tasty food and balanced flavours. We just wondered if the smallish portion sizes and lack of change from a tenner for starters and twenty quid for mains was a reason for it being quiet on a Saturday night. My crab linguine main was starter size and whilst my tuna with wasabi starter was delicious there wasn't enough of it. The tarte tatin is definitely recommended and they have hogs back on tap. Will probably go back but there's lots of choice for 50 quid each without much booze in the area.

We went early evening and just had main courses (we thought the starters were a bit expensive). My wife had the fish special -Hake which was excellent. I had Chicken Milanese which was a very good size portion with a very nice crispy crumb. We had the house wine which comes in a magnum and you only pay for what you drink! Overall a good experience although a bit pricey.

We sat at table 21, lovely building, with a great balcony. We were wonderfully looked after by Jessica, Esme and Tiegan, very helpful and attentive, making the night very special for my wife and I. The food was awesome as always, and The Old fashioned which JC made was just fantastic. Great night, great atmosphere, service and food. Would highly recommend if ever in Godalming

We visited Belle and the Dragon yesterday evening for two family Birthdays and a house move celebration, so a special evening for us. Sadly we did not enjoy the evening. My husband and I arrived first and asked for cocktails. At this point probably a dozen or so other diners in the restaurant. Ten minutes later our son and daughter in law arrived. Our cocktails arrived at the same time, but the waiter did not even make eye contact or ask our son if they wanted drinks. So they went to the bar and got their own. We then had to chase again for a second round of drinks. The food was OK, but certainly not up to the high prices and the service was slow and we had to chase several times every time we wanted anything. We asked for mustard and it didn't appear so in the end I went to the kitchen asked again but by then we had just about finished our meal. We ordered desserts which I think were forgotten and appeared some time later. The only thing all night which was prompt was the bill. We explained how disappointed we were to the manager of the evening and were told if we had mentioned all this earlier we could have had free pudding. Nothing was removed from our bill and we will not return here and will let our friends know how very poor and disappointing this was. Overview. We eat out a lot and the food was good and tasty and beautifully presented but over priced and the service was dreadful.

Celebrated my birthday dinner, my husband asked if my dessert could have a candle in it but the restaurant had no candles. Unbelievably the restaurant had no heater on, and with it being a very cold evening we had to sit and eat in the freezing cold for two hours. Following our visit I actually came down with a cold.

We had a great experience when visiting this restaurant. The food was very tasty with both waitresses and chefs accommodating to our requests without a problem. The atmosphere was very romantic and all members of staff were very welcoming. All in all our time there was delightful.

It was okay. The food does not stand out and when we asked for wine recommendation's to go with our meal we were told a wine which did not go at all (but was the waitresses favourite..). The decor is lovely but the atmosphere is pretty dead with the staff all feeling like they are all brand new.. bit clueless (they also forgot half my meal! Which i pointed out and it did come later). The cocktails were very nice though. Real shame that such a lovely building is not being used properly. I hope the food and service improve as it seems like a real wasted opportunity. In fairness although the staff were clueless they were very nice.

It's out third time at the Bel and Dragon, and the first time they had mussels on the menu - or maybe the first time we spotted it maybe.Atmosphere and decor is fab, it's an old church which is now a restaurant, which may sound a bit odd but it's really very nice and warm and pleasant. As before we were seated quickly and the staff were more than friendly. We quickly ordered, I had a duck salad for starters and other half had small mussels. My duck salad was very tasty, honey, ginger, spring onions and hoi sin go very well with duck. At this point I was getting wafts of musselly smell from my other half's bowl. They sure looked and smelled good!Thankfully I ordered mussels for main. And when they came, my word. They were incredible. The sauce was creamy and bacony - what more can you want!? The mussels themselves were large meaty things, not piddly small things like in other places. I mopped up the sauce with bread, a spoon and though I am slightly ashamed to say, also poured the last drops from the bowl straight into my mouth!Pud, I ordered a gluten free chocolate gooey delight called 'the nemesis'. After that, I was done. Completely done. I cannot remember the last time I felt so very full.Although everything about the meal was spot on, the mussels did shine out. If you like mussels, then you need to go here. Now.
