Just the best. Authentic, really good food. Wonderful service, more than happy to help with some of the more unusual menu items. Hot pot was huge, could have fed twice as many people. Go, now!

Fantastic service. It can be intimidating going to places that are as authentic as this place but they were so hospitable and more than happy to talk us through each step and what they recommend based on our preferences. We felt so valued as customers and will absolutely be returning when we come back to Exeter. Thank you so much for a fantastic evening!

Very authentic basic vibe, not fancy at all; felt like we were in Asia! The food was fantastic, served quickly tasted fresh and served boiling hot which always is a good thing! run by a a sweet family with mum cooking in the back. Would highly recommend!

It is indeed authentic Chinese food. I ordered spicy pepper sausage, fish-flavored shredded pork and two-color tofu. They are all dishes that require a lot of effort. Very clean and very tasty. Double-color tofu is duck blood and tofu, which is the taste of hometown. The portion is also very large. Two people can hardly finish the three dishes, so they have to take them away hahahaha

Excellent Chinese restaurant in Exeter. Only hotpot place here, but it is very tasty and reasonably priced. Spicy is actually spicy and not watered down. Wide selection of other chinese cuisine too and Tsingtao beer. Make sure to book in advance as there are always people waiting to be seated. Would recommend!

So, I went here when they opened a few years back, and had an enjoyable experience with the hot pot, since returning a few times now is my final. As they continuously let us down, with poorly cooked dishes, over use of Szechwan and suspiciously stinky quid. At this price point I would expect to get great food. If you want what they offer, but cooked properly then go to robot chef, on sidwell street. Same price point, but worth every penny. Good bye Beijing Beijing I'll not urge on your splurge again.

This is my favourite restaurant in Exeter, I don’t live there anymore but whenever I come back I try to visit. It is the only place I know that has charcoal heated hotpot! And the pricing for hotpot is excellent compared to other places, and really good quality. Always really nice and cosy and friendly in there. It’s lovely being in there on a winter afternoon and as more people get hotpot it warms up and the windows get steamy.

Went there for the second time, this time with friends on their insistence. I gave it one more shot but again they failed to deliver because it is a very pricey “buffet” the waiter did not get our second round orders. We were ordering more rounds however, once the first round has passed they wait 30 minutes for next rounds, which was extremely rude. This was especially evident as new people came in and got their food before we did and we ordered 20 minutes before that at that point. Drinks are all £3 + and at the end they also add a mandatory service charge of 10% which makes the buffet for only basic ingredients about 33£ per person. Taste is good

The food was very nice and staff seemed friendly, but it was extremely overpriced. I feel that restaurant is slightly exploiting the wealthier Chinese students who are looking for a taste of home. A no frills restaurant with a fancy price tag. Can't fault the food, just the prices.

Least authentic Chinese food in the UK! And the service attitude is very bad. Going to his house to eat is a waste of money. Please both Chinese and British people avoid eating in this restaurant, thank you.

I really wanted to like this place because I love no frills, authentic restaurants which is what this appeared to be, and maybe it was, but unfortunately it was also cold, the staff were super unfriendly and half the food we ordered was poor. We had chicken that was dry and two dishes that tasted overwhelmingly of cumin with no balance of flavours at all. I don;t expect bells and whistles, but he staff gave us the impression that they didn't want us to be there at all. To top it off, it was really expensive for what it was.

Just had a takeaway delivery. Was the best Chinese takeaway we've ever had. We've had Chinese food in China, eating this transported us back there. The beef parcel held together nicely, wasn't too oily and was delicious and crisp. The stir fried pork belly was delicious, flavoured well and again not oily - like many other takeaway food. The chilli chicken was amazing. Floral, spicy, crispy - unami through and through. If you ever want food similar to that of what you find in China, I would highly recommend. My only negative - I do not live near and am on holiday and only wish I had this available nearer to home.

We ordered £50 food delivery on NYeve, I ordered chili chicken and some beef soup. The chili chicken was absolutely bone dry and tasted and looked like spicy pot pouri with bone dry fried chicken thigh with bone in so you had no choice but to eat the bone it tasted so terrible I couldn't eat it and I thought I could eat absolutely anything. The soup also tasted terrible, I'm not sure if I'm not used to authentic Chinese food but both dishes were inedible for me, it tasted bizarre? We were both very disappoined!

NOT recommended - so called 'buffet', food came in small portions (understandable in terms of reducing food waste) yet the service was slow when re-ordering...compulsory 10% service charge was added to the bill for terrible service. Food per se was alright, give it a go if you'd like to try Beijing-style hotpot; AVOID otherwise, being (possibly) the only hotpot restaurant in Exeter doesn't mean customers shall be impolitely treated.

We arrived at 5.30 pm on a Sunday, The restaurant was so cold we had to ask staff to put some heating on. Some staff were wearing their coats to serve, with one girl wearing a long overcoat with the hood up. Our food arrived in random with rice brought out first before any of the dishes. Prices high for what it is, for example a dish of stir fry brocoli at £8! Won't recommend at all.

This place is true Chinese food for Chinese people. It's an absolute eye opener for anyone else that hasn't experienced the real deal. The people that work here are lovely and friendly - the food is great too but it won't please those that expect the normal sweet and sour chicken etc that crops up on your average Chinese restaurant menu in the UK. What you will get is 'hot pot' where you cook your food yourself and a variety of other exciting dishes. The lamb skewers are amazing!

A group of us met in Topsham for a walk and lunch. Not knowing how many would turn up, I had booked for 12. In the event, there were 17 all keen for a lunch. All credit to the team at The Lighter for accommodating us all on a very busy day, even managing when we turned up an hour earlier than planned. The food was excellent, the service too. Wholeheartedly recommend the smoky fish pie. Best fish pie I have ever eaten, and I have tasted quite a lot. Well done chef. Handshake from the South Devon Ramblers.
