Being on a later shift at work I don't turn up to Baynes for lunch until 1pm. Unfortunatley by that time they often have a poor selection left because they do not prepare enough product for the day. No white rolls, no chicken mayo and very unhelpful staff who refused to make up a fresh roll for you if your preferred choice is not already made up, which is usually the case at this time of day. That's even when there is plenty staff behind the counter so much so they are standing about chatting. When asked if they could make one up fresh, at first their excuse for not doing so was there was no chicken mayo left. When challenged what was stopping them from making some more up, there was suddenly also no white rolls left. Perhaps a one off you say, well no, I have been in multiple times before which is why I finally pushed the point with them am why I am here posting a bad review. I have never been able to get a chicken mayo roll on white at or after 1pm. Apparently it is Baynes that dictates what time you should be having lunch not the customer. One time I did manage to get manage to get a chicken mayo roll but once I arrived back at work, I discovered in fact it was a brown roll, so, the Baynes bakery assistant does not seem to know the difference between a white roll and a brown roll. The boss's attitude at the Glenrothes store is even worse, she does not care a jot if you can get what you came in for and denied that it was poor customer service to not have any white rolls left by one o'clock and only having a limp selection of only the brown ready made rolls that no one wants available was fine. I even complained to their headoffice - another waste of time. I got a women in their office who is probably just the office secretary who also. Here input was to say that she would let the area manager know. Of course nothing changed, did she call me back a week or two later to see if I had been in since and had things improved? No she did not. My advise is if your in the central Scotland you will get much better service, and choice, if you go to another bakers for your lunch, I recommend Stephens the bakers, they are far superior in every respect. Baynes = poor choice, poor service by arrogant staff. You may get better service in other Baynes stores but why waste time just go to someone else and be guaranteed to get a better service.

They were unable to serve up a hot pie, bridie or sausage roll at lunchtime. We should have gone to Gregg's next door! Nice coffee though.

Había pedido los bistecs y bridies, ambos no eran geniales. Sabía a comida congelada recalentada.

Really good place to go for food and service

Can’t quite figure why folks opt for Greggs, but the locals seem to love it. Greasy buns with sausage patties and hp sauce, or squished egg and cheese. Like an egg muffin but reheated meats and egg. You have to be in a big rush to choose this spot over a fast food place. It is, in fact, faster than fast food. And it’s cheap. But if you’re at a motorway service stop, go ahead in and have the full breakfast, take a little time for a decent meal.

Stopped by for soup and chunk of bread today. Nice soup, good price. Excellent service, and friendly staff. Other items on menu were pricey, e.g. £9 for a dessert.

We stayed in the adjacent "Atholl cottage" offered by the hotel. At best I'd rate the stay "okay" but only if you're not there in any cold temperatures. It was a cold week but it's not really much of an excuse when the main restaurant and lodge seemed to be heated fine. We were there with my husband and my grandparents and it was so cold in the cottage they couldn't sleep. The only room with any decent heat is the smaller bedroom and the bathroom. The living space was absolutely frozen. We sat in our winter jackets and hats despite the heating being on. The curtains at the front window cover the radiator, so your options are to let all the heat escape the radiator through the window or have your entire living space on display on one of the main roads of pitlochry. It's also to be noted the road was quite noisy throughout the night and morning, all sound comes through to the bedrooms. The carpets throughout are clearly very old, stained, and had a somewhat "sticky" feeling that you get with old carpet. Bathroom was fine, nothing to write home about. Noted that the shampoo despenser wasn't working. The kitchen had some basic supplies but no tea towels or oven glove and no baking trays of any kind for the oven. For a "self-catering cottage" it should have a few more things. There was also only 3 regular coffee sachets provided, the rest were decaf. The overall main detractor here is the heating situation in winter. It was so incredibly cold. I went to the reception to ask for any sorts of blankets and the woman working was incredulous when I said the cottage was cold (despite it being -°2 outside). She eventually went to get one additional king duvet which was appreciated but for a group of 4 not quite sufficient for all of us. It was not a pleasant start to the interaction and I was irritated at the state of the situation at that point so I decided to cut my losses and take the duvet and just deal with it for one night. If we were staying more than one night we would have moved to another hotel because it was truly unbearable for my grandparents. There is a glass backdoor with virtually no insulation - likely a major cause of the cold temperature. Overall there were a few minor things I could've let go, but I could in no way recommend this cottage to someone in its current state. The only benefit I will attribute is the central location, and the cottage comes with its own parking space (although this isn't informed upon booking). Towels and pillows were fine enough. I really recommend McKays take the comfort of guests more seriously and make some updates to the cottage if they intend to keep letting this out. It has a lot of wasted potential in its current state.
