Bay Tree Restaurant in South Derbyshire

Our food was excellent, especially the steak! Staff were very polite and not intrusive. However, the noise levels due to poor acoustics were awful, firstly we had a group of 4 next to us, who were over loud. Then a table for 8 came in and seemed to be shouting the whole time. Interesting another couple who spoke to us on the way out, also mentioned the noise level was high and wouldn’t return.

Wonderful meal, tandoori chicken was perfect. Been several times and never had a bad meal. Thank you once again to the kitchen and your front of house team. I'll be back.

Waited 50 minutes for my starter. Ordered the beef which came rare, so sent it back when I got my meal back the beef was tasteless, in fact no taste whatsoever and my vegetables had gone cold! My husband ordered the fish & chips and the fish was grey. The lady at the next table was also disappointed with their meal as his chicken wasn't cooked. We will not be rushing back! Such a shame as the voucher was a present for our Golden Wedding anniversary

Was looking forward to a lovely birthday lunch as this was a place i had always wanted to visit but so disappointed! Unwelcoming staff, arrived at 1pm and starters finally served at 1.50pm! Husbands tandoori chicken starter was raw ! The waitress simply said she would let the chef know but no apology or visit from the manager who was in the restaurant the whole time! The soup was very bland and the choice on the menu was very basic … was suprised to see fish and chips on a sunday lunch menu. The bill arrived and i asked for a reduction for the starter with the raw chicken and to take the 10% service charge that was automatically added to the bill. I had also been charged £2.95 for 2 pieces of french bread that i had to ask for with my soup, with no butter! The manager said he was not the owner so not responsible for the charges! I said surely the manager is! Very disatisfied and will never visit again

Delicious food and nice service what more could you want?

We stumbled accross this restaurant on the way to our weekend glamping. The wine was good, served at the right temperature. We didn’t want a big lunch. We had cheesy garlic bread to share, followed by a starter, the crab and prawn linguine. It was delicious, seasoned perfectly and lovely and hot. For once you could taste prawns.

Our first visit and it was truly fabulous from start to finish. Excellent service great menu we had roast beef which was so amazing it cut like butter snd excellent selection of vegetables. Dessert was crumble and for me probably the best Panna cotta ever ! We will definitely be back .. first class..

My husband and I have just had our wedding reception at The Bay Tree Melbourne. There were 30 of us and Rex and staff were amazing, the food was fantastic! I’ve been coming to this restaurant regularly for 30 years. It’s still run by the same owner/chef called Rex Never had a bad meal yet. I love his Malaysian influenced dishes. Rex grew up there. He does traditional food as well. Pascal the maître d’ is very attentive and has a good sense of humour.

It was so tightly packed and so loud that we had to lean forward and shout at it each other for most of breakfast. We left early, hoarse, hungry and with headaches, and when we complained, the manager barked back, ‘What did you expect at Easter?’

Not been for a while, but hit the spot, food was excellent and as expected. Chef has a unique style and I could recognise his cooking in any taste test. Service excellent as expected however and is slightly odd, no music. Was quite on arrival and only the clunking of cutlery from the one table. It filled up but was just odd.

It wasn't as good as I was hoping tbh

The starter was lovely.The mains were a let down.The service started ok.Then got slower to the point where we waited for the bill for15 mins.When nobody came anywhere near the table we forced there hand and got up to leave.A waitress noticed and we asked for the bill.The restaurant was short staffed which showed in the service. If we were asked if everything was ok I would not be writing this review because I would have raised my concerns.

We came in to celebrate my dad's 70th birthday (it was his actual birthday that day so extra special). The Bay Tree is an incredibly special place for him as he had his first date with his wife there, and him and his wife actually had their wedding reception there. The restaurant was told on multiple occasions beforehand that we would be coming in on his 70th birthday, and yet there was absolutely no mention of it, nor was anything done by the restaurant to make him feel special. He didn't mind at all as that's the sort of man he is, but the rest of us did mind and I thought it was pretty poor that no-one even wished him a happy birthday. I was also pretty appalled at the portion sizes. I had roast pork. For such an expensive meal, I had one roast potato, a tablespoon of mash and one carrot. There was no music playing so zero atmosphere as it was incredibly quiet so you felt you were bothering the table next door simply by talking.

Pascal and the team made us feel very welcome. The decor and atmosphere is great. The champagne breakfast is absolutely stunning. Fab quality produce (proper bacon) and beautifully cooked and presented. The choices are really interesting and would recommend to anyone. Peach French Toast with griddled peaches and mascarpone is fantastic. A lovely, chilled, relaxed thing to do with friends and family. Thanks for a brilliant brunch!

Had a lovely meal as always. Even though it didn't seem busy, I think it was manic in the kitchen for some reason. Booked in at 8:45 was over an hour before we got our starter, but generally, they tried their best to keep us up to speed. Definitely will go back, but maybe try to go earlier 😀

Excellent champagne breakfast. Return visit to the Bay Tree. Updated menu, with new favourites to enjoy on future visits. Great atmosphere and delicious cuisine.

We eat out every Sunday and had been looking forward to our lunch at the Bay Tree. The venue is lovely and staff seemed friendly however, the waiting time for food is ridiculous. The starters were nice but the beef on the Sunday lunch was really fatty or poor quality and the amount of vegetables for two people was really poor. We are generally quite laid back and have no issues with waiting times or paying higher prices if the food is enjoyable but we left feeling very disappointed, especially considering the amount we paid.

We had to wait 55 minutes to be served at a table we had pre-booked. We were about to walk out! Never have I recieved such poor service. The food was average! The tip included to remove your option of an opinion

So disappointed. I specifically asked if the calves liver would be pink, as it should be, and was certainty told yes. First taste I could tell over cooked with a harsh liver flavour and not as tender as expected. I was offered a replacement but due to its unevenness part was raw and the bordelaise sauce didnt have the same richness. No creme fraiche added. The vegetables were over cooked. The cheese board was very nice. What upset me most there wasn't an apology from who I assume was the owner. It was always a fine dining experience unfortunately not now. I wont be returning.

Had a fantastic meal for my sister in laws 60th. Brilliant food and service. Definitely recommend especially for a special occasion.

Visited many times for the Champagne the Breakfast and always tremendous experience so we decided to try Sunday Lunch. We usually do not mind waiting for good food but an hour plus per course seems a bit slow. Appetizers were generally acceptable soups were however heavily missing on seasoning. Main courses Roast Beef was adequate nothing special, vegetable accompaniments seemed small for the size of our group. Pie of the day can only be described as truly disgusting. Would say only one of the main courses was enjoyed. Desserts were simple enough that no body could get them wrong. Love the people at this restaurant but have to say something went badly wrong on this occasion.

We veered off the M42 looking for a late lunch snack, and thanks to the farm shop we originally aimed for not doing lunch ended up at The Bay Tree. We had 3 tasty small plates. Service was first class and the food was well made. An excellent stop

This was our first visit to The Bay Tree. We were impressed by the ambience of the place. The food was amazing and worth the expense for the quality of the ingredients. However a few things spoiled the experience: 1. In common with other restaurants you haven't got your bottom on the seat before someone comes to take drinks. 2. Four out of Five of us had finished our starter before the 5th person got theirs. 3. Service was VERY slow, we don't like it to be too quick but this was painfully slow. 4. We tried to order a second bottle of wine and the waiter who brought the wine list never came back to take the order. 5. I object strongly to restaurants automatically including 10% service charge, I know this is voluntary but it is embarrassing to have to ask for it to be removed. I don't object to tipping, in fact there are times when my tip would have been greater than the service charge. If service was poor like tonight I don't want to pay for it. Service charge (or tipping) should be for GOOD service. Would I go again DEFINATELY but being prepared for a slow not quite perfect experience.

Amazing gem! Booked this for a surprise champagne breakfast for a leaving do. From start to finish the communication was top notch. Trying to organise 28 people with oreorders and deposits, but the restaurant were patient and fully on board. The food was incredible came all together as tables, hot and beautifully presented. Staff friendly and nothing was too much. Our work group were saying they definitely want to go again!!

Father's Day Champagne breakfast. Haven't been for a while but still as good. I started with Kedgeree, and then Welsh Rarebit with smoked haddock, toast,orange juice and of course Champagne 🍾 😋. This is my favourite Restaurant for Champagne breakfast and a snip for £28.50 £26.50 for Prosecco.

Well, been meaning to dine here for years and tonite was the nite. Been to many 1 & 2 Michelin star restaurants but can honestly say, the quality was as good as anything Sat Bains knocks out !! Had the Asparagus starter which was simple but just perfect, buttery with al dente texture. Main was rack of lamb which was cooked to absolute perfection, one of the most difficult cuts of meat to cook bang on. Dessert was the pineapple signature dish….simply divine. Coffee was just that, coffee ! Wine list was good but quite expensive. Paid nearly 3 times the price for our fave Rose. Okay, £168 for 2 may be steep but really worth every penny. Would we come back ?? Damn right we will but next time with a group and everyone should experience Baytree 🤘

We had dined here previously a few years ago and enjoyed it so much we were saving it for special occasions. However this visit did not come anyway near our previous visit. Nice contemporary surroundings, but we had to listen to a very loud manager discussing his business on the phone initially, and the food was certainly not as special as the price. Tasty yes, but certainly not to the standards we had experienced previously. Unfortunately we won’t be returning as this was definitely overpriced and it was unforgettable for the wrong reasons!

The food in central England has come a long way over the last few decades. We had a delicious, sophisticated meal at Bay Tree. Melbourne is not exactly a bursting metropolis so a restaurant of this high quality was a nice surprise. We were celebrating a milestone birthday of our friend and had a table for 13. This required ordering ahead, which was smart of the restaurant. It meant food coming out with proper timing. My rack of lamb was delicious as was the salad starter. A good wine list with very fair pricing adds to the value and great service topped it off. Highly recommended.

Just had a lovely meal, the food was great and really well presented. Our experience was tainted however by who we assume was a chef shouting at another member of staff. Not only did it make us feel uncomfortable but it was extremely unprofessional. I don't think it's ever justified to talk to someone in that way. Unlikely to visit again as a result.

Food was basic at best and definitely over priced, chef was rude and wouldn't cater for dietary needs. Really disappointed at small restricted menu. Large piece of gristle in meal, not sure how this was missed!

We booked a champagne breakfast for my wife’s 50th with family. My wife was a regular some years back, and I have been a couple of times in the past too. The standard is very good, smashing good quality food with friendly attentive staff. Nothing is too much trouble and standards are still high. I am a bit funny with my food, but I was catered for effortlessly (although no Marmite for my porridge 😂) highly recommended and we won’t hesitate to go back in the future. Well done Bay Tree.

Our daughter treated us to late morning breakfast here for mother's Day and to thank us for our help recently. From the moment we walked through the door we knew we were going to have a great experience. The feel of the place - atmosphere and decor - is lovely and the staff very welcoming. We had the two course Champagne breakfast. The menu choice is comprehensive and some really nice choices. For first course I had Kedgeree which was well presented and tasted really good. Just a faint background taste of spice and lovely smoky naturally smoked haddock with boiled egg and rice. For nain course I had the full English which again was well cooked and presented and what a joy the taste of the sausage. Beautiful piping hot and not bitter filter coffee with toast and some gorgeous blackcurrant jam for me. We weren't rushed although they obviously had people arriving for lunch and at all times the staff were friendly, professional, speedy and just delightful. I cannot think of a single thing they could have done better and my wife and I have already resolved to go there for an evening meal. What an absolutely fantastic find in Melbourne 👍😊

Took a gamble trying somewhere new and so glad we did! We were an earlier booking at 6:30pm but the restaurant soon filled up with other reservations by 7pm. Even when it was quiet beforehand it was a lovely experience. The staff were kind and courteous throughout, it had a great ambience and the food was terrific. We both had the lemon sole & salmon for our mains, served on a hot plate which makes a massive difference. This was followed by the chocolate tart and the carpaccio of pineapple. Lots of care had gone into every dish and the quality of ingredients were second to none, unlike other places we’ve been to recently in the same price point. We couldn’t fault anything - the flavour combos were spot on for all courses. I never usually go for a chocolate dessert but loved it. Homemade tart with perfect pastry, good quality chocolate, homemade/local raspberry sorbet and berry compote - simply delicious! It’s a particular joy to go out for a special occasion when where you’re going lives up to expectations to match the cost. Thank you! Keep it up!

Visited years ago and booked this time primarily as mid way for an evening with friends. Food was good , my lamb with masala sauce was perfectly cooked . Service was good . Thought a bit on the expensive side tbh , also never keen when a service charge ( which we paid) is auto added as well to the bill.

Over the years we have visited the Bay Tree many times for champagne breakfast. This time we noticed that the service wasn't as good and the food was very nice but very small portions. Very disappointing when the price has gone up and a 10% surcharge has been put on.

At the end of our meal I asked for another glass of Prosecco to which Pascal came out with a glass for me and my partner telling us that we’d already had our limit of half a bottle between us but he’s giving us it anyway. It was quite sarcastic and rude and we definitely hadn’t had half a bottle between us. I said that we hadn’t very politely and I got told “I’m not going to argue with you”. Pascal then went back to the kitchen and told his staff that he we had had half a bottle which we and the whole restaurant could hear. Appalled by the entire experience. (1) they should state the limit when you arrive if you’ve got a voucher and (2) they should keep better track of who’s having what. I had 3/4 of a 125ml glass to start and then got a tiny top up part way through. That is not 1/4 of a bottle. I felt like it was so rude and wish we didn’t get given the “extra” prosecco. In fact, I refused to drink it as I was so put off by this point, luckily my partner drank it so they couldn’t reuse it on anyone else! Will not go back and do not recommend.

Excellent experience. Just wandered into the courtyard cafe and warmly welcomed when I asked for a glass of water. Stayed for a first rate coffee with a slice of fruit cake added. Delightful and hope to return soon.

We went there for a family champagne breakfast as part of my wife's birthday celebrations. There were six of us all mostly having different dishes. All were excellent; as was the service. Will definitely not leave it another twenty years before we go again!
