we have just spent 5 days at the hotel with Caledonian travel and can highly recommend the food in the restaurant, plenty of choices, lovely and hot and catered for all tastes. Both the breakfast and evening meals were all buffet so you could put as much or as little as you wanted on the plate. The number of desserts on offer was amazing thank you.

when i went to the Trecarn hotel in August of this year i thought it was good! i did enjoy it, but when i planned my next trip i planned it without cancellation because i insisted i was going but something came up where i couldn’t go, i got covid and my uncle went into hospital for multiple things and so i tried wavering the fee for my room and explained my situation and they declined it, i don't know i just think its a bit silly and i do think its somewhat stealing from the customers, i can now say that after i pay my £242 (which is the full price i wouldn't be too fussed if it was £90-150) even though im not going i will definitely not be returning to this hotel.

Stayed here with over 40 people for 4 nights. Hotel rooms are basic but very nice and clean. Everything you could ask for. Staff very welcoming and accommodating. Honestly the best breakfast I have ever had. Constantly filling it up with fresh hot food. Dinners were nice as well. 3 choices every night with vegetarian options available on request. Plenty of staff serving you. Absolute bargain for the price. Would definitely come back. Top stay x

I stayed in this hotel last weekend and I have to say it makes Weston Super Mare look like Ibiza, when I was checking in the manager went off to use the toilet and didn't come back for about 15 minutes and upon return didn't apologise and literally didn't even care even though by this point there was about 7 customers waiting, then I hit the sack about 10pm as I was tired after nailing cornish rattler on the harbour side all day, 2pm what I can only describe as absolute lunatics stormed into the room next door and they were bang on the gear all night into the early hours, I would of slept sounder next to Jimmy Saville - my advise avoid this hotel its on a par with East Fife

It was adequate. Room was on lower floor near back entrance and this helped my partner with his mobility scooter. Only fault with room 239 was we had to keep taking plugs out for tv kettle hairdryer and mobile phone chargers. Therefore not enough plug sockets. Rooms were not cleaned each day to I believe covid restrictions. Food was very bland even though there was a variety of choice. Partner enjoyed breakfast. We travelled with skills/silverdale coach on 20 September. Entertainment was adequate but bingo very pricey with little amount as prize money also drinks were expensive. Staff were pleasant but felt they were eager to carry on with work as once you shared your query they didn’t pursue. I lost my Olympus camera in a blue carrier case and on 23 which was my birthday our coach party was asked if anyone had lost one. I did not realise till the evening and asked at reception but they never even asked over Microphone if any one had found one. This has baffled me as I would of thought It would of been handed in especially has someone had asked the question. Hope the person didn’t take liberty to take it home with them. The last I saw it was on my bed. Other coaches Caledonian and Shearings.

Been here before and said I would never venture back, unfortunately due to my line of work this was a very late booking.com as I desperately tried to book other hotels. Stayed one night over a weekend and I wished I hadn’t even give the place a thought. It was the cheapest hotel in the area but the only hotel if you can call it that which had rooms available, no surprises there, on the Saturday evening all I could hear from a nearby room was music and shouting, I went to the reception in the early hours only to find the receptionist with her head down on the desk, she appeared to be sleeping, I knocked the counter several times and the young lady raised her head yawning, she apologised and said she had a headache as she had to work excessive hours due to being short staffed, i informed her about the noise coming from at least one room, the receptionist replied I’m sorry but it happens all the time at the weekend. I returned to my room or cupboard as the room was so small you could grow a cabbage in there, eventually the noise quelled and I managed to get a few hours sleep. On waking up I decided to quickly shower and get out of this place, the shower was a complete joke, the water was just dribbling out and I could not wash my hair properly, the hairdryer was useless so I decided to get my belongings together and leave as I was losing my patience, all I will say for those whom choose to stay at this please remember if your drunk it won’t appear to be that bad because all I see this hotel fit for is hen parties or stag parties, it’s a place to crash out and get over a hangover, because you will not remember nothing, you don’t want to remember the Trecarn Hotel

Right then, genuine, honest review here. Bottom line is, it's 'okay', as title says you get what you pay for. If you aren't picky or fussy and want somewhere to kip and eat at a cheap price for a few days (we paid £309 for 4 nights with shearings, peak weeks) then this will do. After reading the reviews only 2 days before arriving, I'll be honest I thought what the hell have we done. But by this time it was too late and I thought best get on with it. Surprised at Shearings really, I thought they would have been a bit more choosey as to where they were taking their customers, particularly as most of them are elderly. It was also the reason why I didn't bother to look at the hotel reviews first either. The hotel location is good. The hotel is very, very much in need of a re-furbish. The bar restaurant area is not bad, but it's quite dark in there, carpets, decor needs attention. Our room was OK. Beds were quite hard, only one pillow, but that was fine with me. Dated, but clean. Food wasn't great but better than I thought given some of the reviews. Definitely frozen vegetables, cash and carry desserts, tinned fruit etc. Breakfasts were typical English breakfast, no croissants or yogurts or fresh fruit. But the cereals were kelloggs which was good. Tea coffee area was a bit hit and miss. But least the food was hot. The reception staff were lovely. The waiting staff were lovely but if I'm honest one in particular needed a bit of advice on how to present themselves. Check in was manic, our coach driver had to check us in, in the car park! Did feel sorry for the elderly people, struggling with their cases up to their rooms as the lift east great. All in all would I stay again? Only if I I had no other option, certainly wouldn't choose to. The coach drive (Ian) couldn't fault. Lovely bloke who did all he could to help anyone.

Just returned home after spending a week at the hotel, room was basic but clean, we had french doors which opened out on to a raised decking area which provided a nice outdoor space to sit out which was very welcomed on the hottest week of the year. We didn't eat at the hotel as we booked room only so cant comment on the restaurant. I felt the night entertainment could be improved as it felt much of the same every evening. The cleaning lady was very friendly and accommodating as we ran out of a couple of things and she gave us more as she was cleaning neighbouring rooms and told us to just ask if we saw her about. Hotel is ideally located for walk to the beach and other attractions.

The meals were served by some staff whose personal hygiene left a lot to be desired. One girl had blue dye all over her hands.

The times of splendour of the Britannia Hotels are long over. The photos show better conditions than they are. The room was decent, although the dust in its various parts surprised me. The shower is a tragedy. The jet of water felt more like a drip than a normal shower. It took ages to wash shoulder-length hair. Hopelessness. The staff was nice and helpful, although very scared. The food was of terrible quality. Cheapest and worst frozen products from the store for the pound. Don't buy meals because you'll have to eat out anyway. Little and terrible. The rooms are not cleaned even during a longer stay, fresh towels or tea need to be replaced at the reception after explaining, the rubbish must be taken out by yourself. There is one elevator for several hundred rooms, which is waiting for ages. All encountered guests complained about the standard, food and conditions. The location is near the cliff and Babbacombe beach but far (£ 8 one way by taxi) from downtown Torquay. A hotel for undemanding customers.

The hotel itself is old and tired and in need of a good renovation, the only saving grace was the breakfast, the housekeepers and a couple of people in reception. Parking is atrocious, it’s on road parking if you're lucky and can find some spaces. Was told when we arrived that we couldn’t park on the white lines due to accessibility but obviously doesn’t apply to staff who just rock up and park, and the back car park you supposedly couldn’t use either. Rooms ok,shower was hit and miss also so was the water. Me personally wouldn’t recommend this hotel, but have to say there are some stunning restaurants around there.

Spent a night here on a weekend away and was awful from the moment we got there, no where to park after it states there is onsite parking but there is not and the roads to park on are full from guests and residents, when we finally managed to get parked, it went even more downhill from there, we had to walk past a water leak from the ceiling to get to our rooms, narrow hall with buckets on the floor, the room smelt damp and musky, floors felt like they was about to cave in. When we looked out the room window we see a massive area that you could use as parking but was told can’t park there as it’s coaches only, clearly no way a coach is getting in there, yet to find out when we came back later they have allowed others to park there but we was still sent on our way again. Staff don’t seem to care but feel sorry for them because I only stayed a night, they have to work there, feel like I’ve been robbed it’s more like a halfway house and will not be returning, should be featured on hotel hell. Fix it up or shut it up before someone gets ill from breathing in mould fragments.

Tiny room with no window !! We had booked room weeks ago with a window . Half an inch at end of bed to crawl to toilet if sleeping on right hand side of bed as so very cramped ! Hardly any channels on, tv wires hanging down from tv and aerial How the elderly cope in these rooms is beyond me Remote not working properly ,had to keep pressing it so many times . Dangerous wobbly glass coffee table by side of bed . Very old fashioned lamp one side of bed , nothing my partners side .No socket by kettle . Had to boil kettle on floor by a socket Power socket by bed as impossible to use as headboard totally obstructing it and can’t move bed down for space as no room . Wardrobe fitted at a slant as following slanted roomNo welcome pack so didn’t know what time to check out . On arrival told only room left was without window tho I’d booked a room with window purposely as get claustrophobic and have bad anxiety - I was offered a free bottle of very cheap wine Queue behind us of others complaining . One lady travelled 5 hours to be told no room tho she booked weeks ago . Couple behind us also had booked room with window but told no window room left . Bed not made correctly mattress old and just a duvet on base of bed with hole in it , another on top ! Terrible design health and safety would strike them offWas not sure why boarded up piece of wood by right hand side of bed was but In night could see bright lights at Back of this this . Fire alarm went off in middle of night we all had to vacate No shower gel no shampoo Old brown Wardrobe fitted so badly right next to bathroom door as I came out of toilet in night banged my head on wardrobe and tripped as no room to walk at back of bed . I was very upset and hardly slept . Scared to put anything on coffee table as so wobbly No ventilation in room or even a fan and no window Very old and dated - However, we went to the reception desk the following day to explain the above and ask for a complaint form . The man on reception gave me an email address . I said we cannot stay in this roomHave you any others free. He then checked his computer and miraculously room 228 was free with a window! The difference in this room unbelievable. It was clean , spacious , a nice room tho still many channels still not working . Windows hadn’t been cleaned and had bird poo on but by then we didn’t care as at least we had a window and could breathe . They said reason for channels not working was the weather ! The lift doesn’t work and room 228 was on 4 flights of stairs so was a struggle with our bags to change rooms . I don’t know how the elderly would cope . This was a short 2 day break for us and as my daughter has autism and I look after my elderly mother I’d had to take time to arrange respite . We would go back as reasonable priced on the deal but only if we are able to definitely get room 228. We also went last year and room was good and clean (though hotel needs massive upgrade )so were shocked at the state of room10 . I will give a 3 star rating as the second room was nice .

Stayed here on a trip with National. We were given quite a large twin room, which was clean and tidy. No bath mat in bathroom and floor very slippery. The meals, apart from breakfast, were of a poor standard. The soup was fine, but the meat dishes contained dry meat and frozen vegetables. Dessert was a similar thing each night, gateau, cheesecake etc. The breakfasts were very good. Nice and tasty bacon, ok sausages, black pudding, hash browns, fried and scrambled eggs after cereals or tinned fruit. The entertainment was very good. Bingo first with tickets £5 for 3 sheets and good prize money. The Friday night singer was reasonable. On Saturday night we went out to see The Billy Fury Story and returned late. The singer who was entertaining that night had a lovely voice and got the audience joining in, we were sorry we had missed the whole show. On Sunday night the singer/bingo caller was also very good and interacted with the audience throughout. The staff were helpful and appeared very busy.I would stay here again, but the hotel is a long way out of Torquay, a comfortable 30 minute walk downhill, an awful lot longer going back uphill.

Booked on line, on arriving found a hotel that could be grand, but it’s not. We were a party of four with two rooms booked. Had to walk through the dining room out a door and up a musty smelling hallway to our rooms. On entering our room the musty smell was very strong along with a horrible smell in bathroom. W e had booked bed and breakfast there so had to pay £10 a head for tea each. Meal was only just okay, nothing to rave over. The only thing I really enjoyed was the rhubarb crumble on the third night. Dining room was always messy, and never saw the floors get cleaned once. There were always crumbs etc on floor. A bit of tile was sticking up near the food and I saw a couple of people trip on it. So do yourself a favour, pay a bit extra for a decent place to stay. Not here.

The hotel was great, although it is being refurbished and the lift isn`t working, but the staff were most helpful and took cases to the rooms of anyone who couldn`t manage. The food and the entertainment were very good each night after Bingo. The hotel also arranged the visit to the Theatre, a coach picked us up from the hotel and brought us home again.

First off, you get what you pay for. You can’t expect grand hotel comfort for basement prices. But having said that, The trecarn isn’t a bad hotel at all, especially when you think of how reasonable the prices are. The room is clean and comfortable and warm, maids clean it daily and change towels every other day. The food is decent quality, buffet style allowing you to have as much or as little as required. Staff are friendly and helpful, despite the constant series of moans from the mainly elderly customers. (We all know pensioners are never happy unless they are moaning, )one person was complaining because the roof outside her room was not clean enough for her liking. Another complaint was it was an uphill walk to babbacome, not true, it’s a slight incline to babbacome. Another complaint I heard was that the corridors were too long.

Por lo que pagamos no me puedo quejar! visited the trecarn hotel at the weekend with national holidays we had a briliant driver called gordon . check in was quick and painless , we were given a room on the 2nd floor not a problem you say use the lift, now thats where there is a problem the lift is out of order so we head up 4 flights of stairs when we get to the room we are shattered bad knees and husband getting over a stroke . so we head back down stairs and i explain to the receptionist and she immediately gave us a ground floor room to look at very helpful. now to address the elephant in the room so as to speak !!! the room was basic with a mish mash of furniture but perfectly clean with lovely crisp white bedding a flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer, extra bed covers and pillows and a plus of an ironing board and iron. the bathroom was very clean and nicely decorated needed a little tlc but lovely shower and large bath with razor point as well. the hotel decor obviously in the throws of refurbishment as parts were lovely and others not so sort of shabby chic without the chic . the restaurant was lovely breakfasts were the best !! served the best quality bacon i have ever had in a hotel even the 5 stars ones, everything was pipping hot and to my amazement the toaster was perfect once through for the perfect breakfast toast very impressed plenty to choose from basic cereals to full english, the tea was very a pleasant surprise but coffee wasn't so good. evening meals were again pipping hot with 3 choices , potatoes of various sorts and 2 veg all help yourself. soups were delicious with fresh bread buns and real butter on tap. 4 desserts were available sadly very tasty so i had to have one !!!!. the entertainment was fine a quiz then singer sometimes they do bingo but too quiet when we were there . a happy hour from 5pm to 7pm was a nice addition assorted beers £2.50 a pint and shorts £2.00 a glass. if you need a shop there is a tesco go out front entrance turn left to main road and walk down you can't miss it . there is s lovely beach with a fab cafe 3 minutes walk from the hotel with a lovely promenade to walk along with plenty benches to take a rest or cafe's to grab a drink . there is a trolley car that takes you down to the beach and cafe £2.50 return . to get into town you go again to the main road and you will see a bus stop over the road you get the 22 and that takes you into town, there are some seating areas around the hotel grounds too . well to sum up our stay this is a work in progress the staff are excellent and extremely helpful yes it is a bit tired but they are working on it . so would i go again yes i would remember you get what you pay for but this was much better than i was expecting to get enjoy !!!

Just returned from a Caledonian Travel (National Holidays) 4 night stay. First impressions were good with a clean characterful facade. Booking in was painless. We were on the ground floor behind the restaurant, My initial thought about the room was the odour. I soon realised that it was from the sealant in the brand new toilet suite. The whole room had been recently refurbished. Overnight was a pleasant experience. It was one of the quietest hotel rooms I have ever been in, No hum of extraction fans etc. No banging doors, no noise of gulls in the morning. The temperature was set easily and was very comfortable. The restaurant was also a pleasant experience. Food was excellent at both breakfast and dinner and delicious. Any elderly or infirm guests were eagerly helped by staff carrying food to their table. Tables were cleared quickly and any queuing was caused by guests who could not decide exactly what they wanted. Overall a faultless enjoyable stay. Would highly recommend.

My parents checked in here on a Caledonian coach tour and after one night, I have had to move them somewhere else at considerable expense to me. Their room was shabby and in poor condition and there was water leaking in - they were offered some towels to mop it up. They pushed to move rooms and another room was eventually offered which was smelling of dampness, in a basement and with curtains hanging off the wall. The food was pathetic was packet soup on offer as a starter. As they left the hotel, stressed, in a taxi, there were a queue of people at reception also waiting to complain. My parents have stayed there in the past and always knew it was basic but it's declined dramatically in standard. I almost always only give positive reviews on Tripadvisor but this has been such a terrible experience. If your bus tour company has this on offer, choose another trip!

I stayed in this hell hole for a long weekend. The "restaurant" is tatty and very dated. The food is below average with poor choice for the evening meal. It was so poor on Sunday night people were mistaking a fruit crumble for steak pie. There is plenty to eat at breakfast if you like cereal or full English and making your own toast. The tea and coffee are in big urns so not very hot but very stewed. The furnisher is dated and the tables and chairs too close together to. If you go on a coach trip you will be given a time slot to eat, this varies day to day. Avoid if you can.

We booked with National holidays at this hotel for a new year break, it was more of a new year fiasco. To start us off national were late and then we were told we would have to change coaches at hopwood services and transfer our cases from one coach to another. Well we were not happy about this, it was throwing it down with rain and most of the people on the coach were elderly, as it happened after we complained to the driver he actually did if for us. Then we arrived in Babbacombe to be told that it was now a Britannia Hotel, a little fact that national decided to keep to themselves till the last minute. A lot of people on the coach were not pleased at all as Britannia are not known for good food. Also it was self service and as already stated about older people, this is not good. At the self service area which was not big enough for the amount of people (roughly 200) the queues were not acceptable and the food and plates were not replenished quickly enough. We would like whoever cut the meat to tell us how they could cut it so thin, you could see through it. The vegetables were either over cooked or under cooked but never just right. Starter were poor and the puddings frozen rubbish. There were buckets in the dining room to catch the water from numerous leaks. Then we come to the entertainment which was very poor, the first night was a comedian/magician who wasn't too bad and then for new years eve we had a lady singer who had a broken ankle, whether that affected her voice or not we don't know but simon cowell wouldn't have been impressed with her, and then on new years day the entertainment was bingo and then horse racing. Well we just got a bottle of wine and went back to our room so that tells you how bad that was. The staff were very nice and friendly and were all trying to do their best but it must be very difficult when you are getting the amount of complaints that were thrown at them to keep a smile on your face The room was very clean and we had fresh towels every day. We have emailed national holiday but this far haven't received a reply so can assume that they aren't interested in their customers. So all we can say if you are thinking of booking a holiday with national, don't
