Basmati Indian Restaurant Petworth in Chichester

Lovely restaurant. Indian food was much better than anything I have found home in London. The owner was so kind and attentive and the food was incredible. Could not recommend more ! Particularly impressed with the bhaji, butter chicken and daal, but you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes.

I visited this restaurant on the 31st January for an early dinner and enjoyed an excellent meal. I started with the Aloo Chat which I thoroughly enjoyed and followed on with a selection I can not remember but consisted of chicken and lamb in an sauce that was claimed to be inspired from arabic influences into India. Irrespective of its origins, I can say that it was an excellent dish, well cooked, nicely presented and which I would be pleased to enjoy again. The staff were very friendly, helpful and clearly knew their menu well. If in the area, well worth the visit.

Well what can I say?…..I’m SO incredibly glad the Basmati in Petworth has re-opened after a temporary closure before Christmas. We’ve just had the most wonderful meal, cooked to perfection (with fresh Ingredients) by the most talented chefs and served by the guys there that are extremely welcoming, polite and friendly. This is in an extraordinary setting underground in Petworth square, very well worth a visit and you definitely won’t be dissappointed !! I know you will enjoy it as much as us!

Absolutely first class restaurant in a great setting of a former wine cellar. Ajay looked after us so well with his outstanding customer service. As always, totally impressed and look forward to our next visit as its always a pleasure.

Booked dinner here and after driving all the way it closed with no notice. Even had email 24 hours before asking to confirm booking.

We had booked a meal for a special occasion here .We turned up to find a small note on the front door stating it was closed. We had not been notified or contacted by them to tell us! This left us late in the evening trying to find somewhere else to eat for a party of people on Saturday night. They could've called or emailed to let us know but nothing

I had the lamb tikka masala. Extremely impressed with the food. Would whole heartedly recommend this place.

We eat at Basmati regularly and it’s always fantastic. Takeaway always quick and on time, great atmosphere inside too. Saag Paneer is the best I have ever eaten.

Aj and his team are absolute legends. Food is always amazing. And they are always happy to let me order late which is a real bonus. Cannot recommend them enough.

Ordered a take away very disappointed was for 4 off us for my birthday ,a curry that’s supposed to have sauce had literally nothing dry chicken and rice is what we got I’m very disappointed, minimal effort gone into it the worst curry I’ve ever seen , portions were tiny curry wise ,rice plenty off

Amazing atmosphere, friendly staff, Set in the undercroft of the buildings in Petworth it is a unique dining experience. Reasonably priced and great food. Takeaway or dine in. Definitely worth the steps down to this below ground restaurant.

First time here as recommended by friends. Wow the food was really tasty and the atmosphere was great. Love the cellar setting. Definitely be back to try more delicious meals from the menu .

Basmati Petworth is my favourite Indian restaurant. I have been a regular visitor for the last couple of years. The service is first class and the food is excellent. In five years I haven't had a bad meal. Great value for money. Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just went to Basmati Indian Restaurant. Want to say the service was absolutely brilliant equaled only by the meal me and my other half had . Will definitely come back it's the best Indian restaurant we have ever been to . Thank you for a beautiful meal and exceptional service.

Just had a really good meal there. Staff are lovely. Love the rustic cellar setting that is beautifully lit. The staff couldn't do enough for us. The food is seasoned perfectly, not too spicy (unless you order a really spicy dish!). The Korma sauce is gorgeous. I will definitely be going back there with my husband. A brilliant restaurant right on my doorstep!

Lovely food in a very atmospheric restaurant located in what was once an old wine cellar for the Swan Hotel (now sadly flats). Our waiter, AJ, was very knowledgeable and attentive. I'll definitively recommend to friends. Food delicious.

me and my partner tried here for the first time tonight for our first date night since having our little girl. both food and staff were absolutely brilliant. we will definitely be coming back here for future visits and to enjoy practicing our napkin folding skills!! we both 10/10 would highly recommend here as a dining experience, were so excited to become regular customers and get to know the staff better. we were made to feel like family. thank you to all the staff for making our date so special and memorable x

Myself and my husband visited Basmati Indian Restaurant in Petworth yesterday and may I just say how polite the young chap was who served us...he was very chatty and accommodating and customer service was A1. We thoroughly enjoyed the food which was very tasty....we have searched for a good Indian restaurant for a while now.....The price of the food was very reasonable..... The restaurant itself is very quirky inside which we loved! We would highly recommend you all go taste their delights, we cannot wait for the next visit and this time we will take our friends!!

We order here regularly, the food is delicious always leaves me wanting more, the staff are very friendly great prices what more could you want my absolute favourite on a Friday night if you haven’t tried it you need to you will not regret it.

The food here is delicious! We ordered over the phone and picked it up to eat at home. For two people we had several starters, two curries, rice and naan - it was so tasty we finished every last bit. The owner is lovely and you can tell he puts his heart and soul into the restaurant. You won't be disappointed!

We had been visiting nearby and wanted somewhere for dinner before setting off home. Many of the other restaurants in Petworth either didn't have online booking or didn't answer their phone. So we ended up booking here and it was good.It wasn't easy to find as I usually expect a shop style frontage for Indian restaurants. This is a small sign pointing you down into vaults where this place is laid out - an unusual setting.As usual, service was prompt bringing nibbling poppadoms followed by a selection of starters with mains of a prawn chef special and a chicken curry, all washed down with thirst quenching Cobra beers. All good.

Very disappointed.?.have they changed hands or got new staff...couldn't taste any curry flavour in the organ josh we ordered and the chicken apricot was watery...on the other side the onion bhaji was burnt...!!

Had an amazing takeaway tonight. The Chicken Chilli Shaan was superb. Onion bhajis fantastic, sag also mouthwatering and the parka deal perfect.

Poor service tried to get served multiple times, cashier took a large order from the phone despite the fact I had been standing waiting and then told minimum me 90 mins wait for x2 kormas.

Went for a friends birthday, can’t fault the place at all. Lovely and cosy, fantastic food, attentive staff. Will definitely be back, and the little pudding they brought out to celebrate my friends birthday was a lovely touch. Brilliant meal.

What a fabulous place. Clean, warm, friendly, with exquisite food and friendly efficient service. Perfect for that romantic evening or just a reasonably priced treat. I've paid more for terrible food elsewhere. Well worth a visit.

This is my favourite place to eat locally, I’ve been eating here for about 10 years and I’ve never found a better place, staff are always friendly and remember your face. Food is fantastic and the old wine cellar setting creates a warm cosy setting, not to mention my mother cannot eat gluten, rapeseed oil, dairy and other things due to her illness but is still able to eat almost anything on the menu!

Unless you know Petworth town centre this restaurant is easily missed. In the main square in an underground basement when my wife and I visited it was almost deserted. A shame really as the food on offer was, in our opinion, really good quality and well cooked. The waiter was very friendly and helped us make decisions on what to eat.If we are in the town again in the future we would definitely return.

Visited after a busy day at Festival of Speed after local pub stopped serving. Interesting situation underground, in what must have been cellars. Menu gave good choices of normal Indian fare with house specials. Opted to go straight to mains but felt pressured to have poppadoms etc but we still decline much to the obvious distaste of the waiter. We then waited and waited and waited, eventually hearing the sound of the old rickety wooden trolley with our food. To be honest it was worth the wait, the food was delicious and hot. Just had to put up with annoying women of the table next to us :)

We were greeted by warm friendly staff and seated immediately. Our ordered drinks came within minutes so we could peruse the menu at leisure. There was a great choice of dishes and, when it arrived, the food was well presented and tasted delicious. It was very good value for money and definitely worth a return visit.

Great place to meet up with friends. Good menu and delicious food. Down steep steps which can get slippy so not really accessible for disabled people, but if you can do it with help it's worth it. Open til late, I think booking recommended at weekends

Visited the restaurant midweek early evening with friends. This was our second visit having thoroughly enjoyed the first. We were not disappointed, after a warm welcome and plenty of time to study the menu we were then presented with an array of dishes, all of which were superb. I often find dishes from other restaurants are often overly salted or swimming in ghee. None of the dishes here suffered these traits. 100% satisfied, would recommend it highly.....quirky underground premises too!

In the heart of Petworth lays this little gem of an Indian restaurant . Beneath the street the Basmati is in a old wine cellar which makes for a interesting visit in itself. The menu was great and the food was equally good. Service was spot on, will be going back and recommending to friends.

I have been here twice in quick succession and its been brilliant! it’s only 15 mins away from me so I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to find it!

Thank you to ALL the chefs and staff at Basmati for the MOST delicious meal tonight. We had a take away for a large group and they were all commenting on just how fabulous the food was. We visited this restaurant Saturday night, we were made very welcome by the staff serving us. We found the customer service good, friendly and the food very tasty. The staff were pleasant and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place. We came from Greater London near to SW17 and were staying locally to Petsworth.

I love this restaurant. It is located in cellars under the street but this just adds to the ambiance. Great menu, fabulous food, good prices and excellent service. I can highly recommend this restaurant.

Being visitors to Petworth we had no real idea where to eat and decided on Basmati. Really glad we did as the food, service and location are all excellent.

Came across the Basmati almost by accident, and very glad we did. It's unusual in that you go under the streets and into linked, white-painted tunnels, former cellars I believe - but don't be put off by the underground setting. It's not at all claustrophobic and the food is first rate. I had the best biryani I can remember and my wife had an equally impressive butter chicken. The prices are very reasonable, too, in an area where many of the pubs serve average food at gastro prices.

Had a lovely meal here, not overly expensive. Food very tasty and they even cooked a dish not even on the menu. Staff very discreet but on hand for anything. Loved how it was located in the cellar, very quirky. Would certainly go back, shame we were only in the area for the weekend

The venue is very pleasant and the tables are well spaced apart. Their menu is quite extensive but not too much so. There is plenty of choice for all Indian food lovers. The food is beautifully cooked and piping hot. The service is excellent and the staff are attentive and friendly. I thoroughly recommend The Basmati Restaurant in Petworth and will definitely be visiting there again.

We have been a patron of the Basmati for several years, they deliver a great experience each time we visit.

Have used this restaurant several times over the last few years to both eat in and take-away. Visited this time with my husband and son. Staff very friendly as always. Food was very good and of good size portion. Very reasonable priced. Staff are very knowledgeable on the food they serve. You can ask what anything is, i.e.. ingredients, heat, etc. Very accommodating if you want something a little hotter or milder. Have a small bar were you can enjoy a drink whilst waiting to collect a take-away. Serve most spirits, liqueurs, wine, lager and soft drinks. Always enjoy the food and service here. Quaint location in a cellar. Is always our first choice for an Indian meal. Highly recommend.

We were down in Petworth for a weekend away celebrating my partners birthday and this place was perfect for a cosy little meal. Love the underground cellar location! Food was also excellent.
