We visit regularly for lunch, coffees etc so thought we would try afternoon tea. We had a 2.30 booking. The table was decorated very well and the service was good the food was a bit of a let down. The bread for the sandwiches was delicious but the fillings were just ok. The sweet chutney with the ham was over powering and the chilli cheese again was just a little sickly. The Quiches were all very dry, however the sausage rolls were excellent. The cakes were a mixed bag, the raspberry posset was lovely, the scones were just so dry and overcooked, they didn’t really taste home made ( I buy scones regularly there ) the shortbread was overcooked and crisp, the coffee and brown sugar cake was just dense and tasteless, the brownie was very bitter. It was quite a shock as we have coffee and cakes so often there. We will still go back again but it wasn’t a great afternoon tea experience I am afraid.

Food is good, tables a bit tight for space, but the person that wrote the menu should think again and maybe ask customers It is overly complicated and takes ages to read through all the unnecessary waffle Please make it simpler and shorter

Lovely food but service was lacking. 2 members of staff were busy serving at the counter but despite us booking, we were ignored. We had to find our own menu's, were not asked if we wanted drinks. We then had to ask if we had to come up to order. A tall well dressed lady ignored us each time we asked her something, just looked away, so i don't know the actual purpose of her being there! Perhaps she was foreign but she needs to communicate somehow as she appeared rude. The 2 ladies behind the servery were good and the food was lovely. I think it lacked the usual young smiling faces of those who usually work there.

Really enjoyed our lunch chosen from a very varied and appetising menu.Friendly, helpful staff. Was very busy and we hadn't booked but waitress went out her way to find a table for us.One wee criticism is the tables are a bit close together both for moving around the space and for conversation. Will definitely be back and would recommend.

Entered to the lovely ambiance and array of tray bakes on display. Seated immediately and order taken by pleasant staff. Food arrived exactly as ordered, soup was delicious so I thought lets have a dessert. Mixed fruit crumble with ice cream was also fantastic. Very good value for money, maybe not the cheapest but, you get what you pay for. We will be back soon as finding this quality/standard in Aberdeenshire is hard to find.

Stopped for lunch without a booking. Got seated straight away. Took a long time for our order to be taken with the table next to us getting served first despite coming in after us. Food came and was very tasty. What let us down was not once did anyone come and ask if our food was ok. We were seated close to the kitchen so not hard to miss us. Very expensive and expected better service at those prices. We certainly won’t rush back.

We stopped here for coffee late on a Sunday morning. We hadn’t booked and the cafe was busy, but were offered a table at the far end of the seating area. Once seated we realised this was going to be very noisy (there was a large party enjoying brunch right next to us) so the very helpful waitress offered to move us to the sofas near the door. This was perfect, much quieter and altogether more comfortable. Our coffees were very good, my request for hot milk produced a big jug of it - many cafes give only a thimbleful. The scones were amazing, some of the best I’ve had for years - absolutely delicious, enormous, served warm with the farm’s own excellent jam. We had the special, raspberry, white chocolate and granola. (Plain and cheese were also available.) The bill was significantly lower than several places we have visited recently. About £11.50 - we’ve been charged £15 and even, once, almost £20 for 2 coffees and scones in Aberdeenshire over the past year. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We’ll definitely plan to return as soon as possible.

Booked a week in advance but when we got there they had no time next to our booking. Although there was several tables free, we were asked to wait till a dirty table was cleaned. We asked could we be seated elsewhere as one of the chairs was in the path of the servers and customers. We were moved to another table which had the exact same problem one of the chairs was in front of the kitchen door. Server was snippy. Our food was ordered and served within a reasonable time. Food was average and was expensive for what it was. We waited a long time for someone to clear plates and ask if we wanted anything else. We waited a lengthy period before we were served the coffee’s and cake we ordered. So much so that we had the server who appeared to be in charge ask if we wanted anything else, we informed her we are waiting for our coffee and cake, it’s taking a long time. She nodded and walked away. We won’t be returning any time soon.

Car park out the front and also an overflow to the side, so plenty parking. Indoor and outdoor tables. As it was a nice day we opted for outside. The table was dirty but was cleaned when we highlight it to our server. The menu was good, although the item names/description are rather wordy. The food I had was good, really tasty. However after having a main and pudding, I was still hungry. This was disappointing considering what I paid. The servers were all friendly but we did feel a bit forgotten about. Unsure if it was because we were sitting outside. They have a selection of ice cream and cakes available too. Overall the food was good but as I left feeling hungry I wouldn’t go back.

Lovely table set up for an “old fashioned afternoon tea “ . Whilst the food was delicious and the strawberry 🍓 tarts were the highlight of the day we were charged for our coffee and tea top ups . Our bill came to £40 pp which is very overpriced for what it is .So be warned, as one cup is never enough to enjoy your afternoon tea but it will cost you extra and catch you out !

Lunchtime visit to Barra Berries restaurant with mum and daughter. Have had coffee and a scone here before but not lunch so was pleasantly surprised by the choices on the menu. Not your run of the mill lunch options! I had baked Camembert served with oatcakes, chutney, apple, celery and salad. Mum had an open sandwich with coronation chicken, salad, crisps and popadoms(!). My daughter had a smoked haddock fish cake with poached egg and salad. They were all beautifully presented, generous portions (maybe too much for mum!) that tasted delicious. It was obligatory to have a strawberry tart with a cup of tea for afters. Absolutely delicious! Lovely, helpful waiting staff too. My daughter also got some of the famous strawberry ice cream made with fresh strawberries. I don’t know where she puts it all! I had a taste and it was delicious too. Worth a visit. However, on a negative note. The car park is not in a good state of repair and was very difficult for my elderly mum who has mobility issues to navigate. Maybe time to get it tarred as I noticed there were a fair few elderly people visiting the restaurant.

Had an afternoon tea with family and for the price I paid, we were not overly impressed. Worst part, being served walnut scones because they had not kept aside plain/fruit scones. So if you have a nut allergy or dislike nuts (like me - albeit didn’t expect to be served a nut scone) make this clear when booking. Following my feedback to them, I received a defensive and unsatisfactory response which suggests to me they do not take criticism well. As a result of the response we will not be visiting this place again.

The coffee and scones were nice. Good presentation and pleasant surroundings. We arrived early morning , ordered at the till and sat at the back of the Cafe only to notice the table was dirty with crumbs and sticky. We asked the waitress to clean it, she came over and said they use special cleaner , which is fine but she only cleaned part of the table ... still leaving crumbs ... no seats were wiped down either . A few of the other tables were the same. The cutlery is in the dining area, so anyone could go and pick their own , I think these are meant to be behind the counter now ? The tables are not socially distanced in some parts of the cafe . One assistant was texting on her phone behind the coffee machine , and the cafe was full .Often this place is popular, very crowded with very long queues, given the COVID guidance a few things need improvement, and soon please .

We had booked a table for 4 and when we arrived we were shown to our table, the waiter informed us that we could choose from page 3 of the menu. Not much choice!! The waitress appeared a short while later and I asked " Can we only choose from this page? "She wasn't sure and went off to check, a few minutes later another waitress came to the table and asked if we were ready to order, again I asked was it just the 1 page of the menu we could choose from? She informed us we could choose from 2 pages. I ordered the burger and was very disappointed when it arrived with cheese on. I said to the waitress " Oh I didn't realise it had cheese on, that wasn't mentioned on the menu" she didn't seem that bothered even when I said I can't eat cheese. At no point did she offer to take it away and bring me fresh. I ended up scraping all the cheese off the burger. When I went to pay she just said "I'm sorry about the cheese" obviously not sorry enough to get a fresh one. Won't be visiting again !!!

I pre-booked afternoon tea on a Saturday afternoon as a birthday treat for my mum. We wanted to try somewhere different and we were not disappointed! We were seated at a lovely table at the back with plenty of room for the two of us. We were brought tea of our choice before the first board arrived with sandwiches and wraps. These were all very fresh and a good range of fillings. We were then brought a board with warm vegetable tarts, sausage rolls and little oatcakes with beetroot, all of which were really tasty. The third board contained scones and cakes which were delicious and the perfect size for an afternoon tea, not too big nor too small. Overall, the food was probably the most fresh and tasty we’ve had at an afternoon tea. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and regularly checked how we were getting on and if there was anything else we needed. They seemed genuinely interested in whether we were enjoying ourselves, which was lovely. The manager also came to ask if we had everything we needed. We didn’t feel rushed at all and felt relaxed eating at our own pace. The afternoon tea was excellent value for money and one of the best we’ve tried. We’d highly recommended it!

My second visit here,1st visit for lunch, previous visit was for ice cream only. Today all 3 of us had the quiche which came with a little mixed salad & cous cous with root veg & a little chutney in the side. We all had different coffees, one decaf, one decaf with non dairy milk & a black coffee. Although they didn’t have a great selection of non dairy they had some which is positive. The meal & coffees was tasty, a nice size serving & it was delivered swiftly by very pleasant staff. Apparently the cafe usually finishes around now for the winter season but they had decided to stay open as a trial & has just developed the menu which was obviously limited bring during the trial period. Saying that there was soup, sandwiches & a couple of late lunches like the quiche we all had. The only criticism I have is that you order & pay at the till which I can see being a bit of a problem if there is a queue. However having said that to the guy on the till, I get the feeling that they would look at making improvements if that we’re to become a problem. Anyway moving on the cafe was warm, bright & inviting! We arrived at 12.39 & was still there at 2.30 so no rush for us to move although we all had another coffee bring dry for our catching up. I hope it stays open going by today I would most definitely come back for more lunch. A good 8/10 well worth the drive to. Plenty parking as well ... big bonus!

Yum Yum Yum - excellent berries at a reasonable price. Think I may of overdosed on the raspberries!

We went here solely to try the ice cream (or perhaps a cake) for the first time as it is local. It is a farm shop with a bit added on. It was a Friday afternoon during the school holidays. I had a raspberry ice cream but my wife struggled and went for plain ice cream. There was one "collapsed" and sad looking strawberry gateau. The strawberries in the chiller were small. I thoroughly enjoyed my ice cream.......excellent. My wife sadly, did not enjoy. We sat outside in the sun...bit like a farmyard! Plenty parking and staff very quick . After many years of driving past and finally visiting, I left disappointed and would not return.

First visit here & after a 15 min que & another 15 mins to get 2 ice creams & a tub costing over £9 we sat outside. It was nice but now we have been & done it we wouldn’t go back as it’s the same each time. Also on days like these all flavours should be available so was disappointing to only of got 2 to try. Friendly staff & clean venue.

Came today with family and its fair to say it was a disappointment. We ordered 3 ice cream tubs and when the young lad was using the machine he struggled to get any ice cream out as he had to scrape out clumps from the bottom of the funnell where the ice cream came out. Staff also handling money and then handling cones for ice cream straight after. Bought a punnet of strawberries on our way out and they were near frozen so cold it hurt my teeth, very bruised and too sour. Definitely will not be back and will try somewhere new locally.

Went for afternoon tea with friends and didn't complain at the time as did not want to offend my friend who suggested here. We arrived and it was very busy they had no table set up for us and we had to "hang about" for 15 minutes. We eventuallygot to our table which was set with a very creased, dishevelled table cloth, all at 6;s and 7's. To my horror 5 out of 7 of the cups were very badly tea stained, there were no tea spoons and there was about an inch gap between height from one table to the other with the 2 tables pushed together. I have worked in hospitaly which served an exceptional afternoon tea and I shudder to think why anyone would ever have set out dirty cups. After polishing my own cutlery, (which was all watermarked, and having to ask for clean prosecco glasses) the food came. A large plate of sandwiches, crusts on but fine, my friend is gluten free (which she had told yourselves at least a month before when making the reservation) and was delighted with her sandwiches. About half and hour later the waitress came with a plate full of shop bought quiche, cold and proceeded to plonk half of one on each plate, she then told my friend they have nothing gluten free but she could have more sandwiches, my friend refused, as she was a bit sandwiched out. The quiche was not good. They then came alonge with massive scones, which were nice, but again told my friend they had no gf scones and did she want ice-cream. There was an okay selection of tray bakes and the millionaires shortbread was nice. I really dont think you should be trying to do afternoon tea, and at £18.95 a head it really was not worth it. I must add the staff were very nice especially considering they were out the door with people waiting for icecream.. As I said, having recently worked in hospitality in a nearby establishment which only charges £1 more per person the quality and service were night and day. I would stay away from trying to cash in on afternoon tea, its supposed to be, and make you feel special and it really didn't. I love supporting local businesses but this was just a rip off, and very badly organised by yourselves if at all.

Beautiful local ice cream, made with there own berries. Home made cakes and scones too, with lovely coffee. Nice to see other local produce on sale, like grenola, biscuits, cream, butter & jam, plus Mackies

Apart from buying lovely raspberries to make jam the rest was such a disappointment! Hardly any choice of cakes or traybakes, no scones and one little traybake left and this was at 2pm. I wasn't expecting paper cups and plastic cutlery and there were no napkins despite lots of staff being behind the counter. Very expensive for what you get so I'm afraid I won't bother to go back.

Well worth a trip to Barra Berries - ice-cream is the best I have ever had and will certainly go back. Delicious homebakes and coffee. As well as there own fruit on sale there are other local producer goods for sale.

Surrounded by the most idyllic location, Barra Castle Farm Shop is a must visit. Having just moved back to Aberdeen, (having been away for a few years), I had heard so many lovely things about this place, I decided to visit last week with my friend and her two young children on a beautiful summer’s day for an ice cream.

I visited the farm shop/coffee shop yesterday with my daughter when we decided to stop for morning coffee. The service was very shambolic and despite waiting for over 10 minutes for our coffee/hot chocolate to be served they served a normal hot chocolate when we had ordered and paid for a deluxe hot chocolate. This was eventually rectified. I was also disappointed to note that everything was served in paper cups, plates, plastic knives and even the jam for the scone we ordered was in a paper container. Surely in this day and age it would be better for the environment if everything was served using reusable containers/cutlery. Will not be rushing back!

I was about to reluctantly give Barra Berries 1 star, purely because of the plastic cutlery and takeaway cups which is just not acceptable any more. However, on reading the response to a similar recent review, I see that proper crockery is on order. Well done, Barra! (I hope you’re also looking into ditching the plastics for your wonderful soft fruits So I can say instead that the coffee and cakes were good, the staff were lovely and it’s a beautifully decorated space to sit in and enjoy it all.

Visited the farm shop and tea room this morning after seeing it in the Society magazine. Amazing setting. We were lucky with the weather so took advantage of the lovely outdoor seating.

I always enjoy the fruit from Barra. We visited the café recently and had 2 teas and 2 fruit tarts which cost £11.30. Sitting in the café, I was very disappointed when our teas were served in paper cups and pastries on paper plates with plastic cutlery!!!

Popped in past today for tea and scone wish I hadn’t bothered half cups of tea in PAPER CUPS reasons for half cups (could be for health and safely) as staff carry cups to your table can’t see why they use so much disposable tableware in this day and age when we are trying to be more environmentally friendly. Scone served on PAPER PLATES with plastic cutlery, scone was like a rubber ball obviously not fresh and was reheated in microwave.

Ice cream at its finest. Mix local ice cream with fresh berries - heaven! Worth the drive and plenty parking and a wee cafe/shop. Should be part of everyones summer!

Stopped at the cafe on the way home from a shopping trip expecting to be able to get a sandwich or salad but found that the only food options were cakes (which were unfortunately being invaded by wasps) or ice cream. We opted for ice creams, which were absolutely delicious however I personally don’t believe this place really meets the ‘cafe’ criteria.

Fresh fruit is absolutely lovely but the ice-cream is pretty overrated in my opinion. Staff not overly friendly.

Excellent choice of flavour of ice creams made from fresh fruit while you wait. Lovely, friendly service. Good indoor and outdoor seating areas and a large car park. Just don’t try walking there as there are no suitable paths. Also available large punnets of small strawberries for a pound.

I was a first time visitor and found the cafe to be clean with pleasant surroundings and very polite staff but it was vastly over priced - two small hot drinks two extremely small tray bakes one small tub of icecream which totalled £14- 75 !! I certainly won’t be rushing back .

Stopped here with a friend for coffee and some freshly picked strawberries. Super service and a great cafe experience in the sun. Situated by the castle with good views of the countryside past the nearby main road which gets a bit busy and noisy. However the coffee was great with tasty treats for all ages.

Went in for a quick take away ice cream for me and the kids. There were 2 young girls behind the counter. 1 person was paying for their sit down meal and a mum and push chair were at the ice cream. Seemed to be struggling with Apple Pay and took an age to serve the ice cream. The other staffer was making coffees. A queue started forming and the mum left. Unfortunately I was ignored and the person who just walked on got served. I walked out and got served instantly next door. Not the first time happened in there. I won’t be back

Right next to where we stayed this little cafe was calling out for us to get coffee and cake. The cake offering was very good with lots of choice and the same with the drinks. Both were delicious - however, the service was so slow due to there being one member of staff trying to manage everything with a queue forming outside and orders coming in on an app. There needs to be more people helping.

Stayed here for just 1 night while exploring Balmoral and the local area. Room was lovely with a stunning view over the Loch. Even had time to try the golf which was a nice little course. Found the owners to be nice and friendly. Would stay here again.

Was having a family Christmas lunch there were 4 adults and 2 children, we were welcomed in,all proper procedures were adhered to, server asked about allergies before we ordered great but went down hill fast from there 3 of the adults had carvery we were asked what meats we wanted 2 wanted all 3 1 wanted gammon and turkey that was all we were asked. When the meal came she did not know what was on plate.Potatoes, vegetables etc were already on plate not in dishes to take what you wanted (as we were not asked what we wanted) the food was not even look warm and there were very full plates went back, it was not even asked when the server saw the full plates if there was a problem, as this was a Christmas family lunch and £60 we were very disappointed and would think twice about visiting again.
