Barney's Plaice in Huntingdonshire

Lovely gentleman on the phone, sadly the miserable woman at the order desk is why we won’t be returning. Letting the young girl run around like crazy whilst she stood giving chewing her fingers people dirty looks. Sounds about right for a manager funnily enough, customer service skills for the sour faced one needs some work.

Nice fish, loads of chips, cash only

I had a couple of hours to kill in Huntingdon and fancied fish and chips. Always a gamble when you don’t know the area/ shop. Have to say probably one of best I’ve had. If this is its usual standard then I wish I lived closer.

X3 small kids meal sausage and chips.(no drinks included) X3 TINY curry sauces £26 Don't think I'll return at these prices for the portion sizes you get. Extremely oily to how i remember too.

Last time they forgot the coke I paid for. This time I paid extra for a jumbo sausage instead of a battered sausage for my child's meal and they provided a battered sausage.

Was in Huntingdon for a 60th party enroute we needed to stop for food as we were famished. We came across Barneys Plaice the smell of freshly cooked chips was definitely a draw. On entering the shop it was very clean bright and staff greeted us both with warm smiles. Food looked fresh and very appealing in the showcases. We just ordered battered sausage and chips. My partner is very particular in what and where she eats when out especially fast food. Even I was taken aback when she chose a sausage in batter. Well we were not disappointed as the chips were banging. I will go as far to say best chips I've ever eaten. The sausage in batter was light and crispy and tasted great. Not greasy at all so much so my partner aye it all we fought to see who would get the scraggy chips at the end. Amasing food it was our privilege to eat this food and very worthy of this review. Have told our friends there in Huntingdon to go and give Barneys a try as they won't be disappointed. I will visit again when local again.

Absolutely terrible. Soggy batter and massively overpriced. £11 for cod and chips?? I live near one of the best chippies in Lincolnshire and that meal would be £6.50 and much better.

They do not communicate with just eat drivers, lady I spoke to was rude, food went to the wrong house and she said “ bad luck, we don’t communicate with the just eat drivers, we just give them food and they deliver.” I quote she said nothing I can do and hung up !

By far the worst fish and chips I've had in England. I don't understand where these reviews come from. The fish was completely dried out and tasted only of fryer oil and the chips weren't worthy of being called chips. Such a shame. But the portion size was appropriate for the price.

We love your chips, but have to say….. when your 2 ladies are serving we always seem to get given a disgustingly small portion of chips! We understand that prices have gone up, but guys…. We are talking about nearly £4 for a large portion, potatoes have not gone up 300%…. Over the last few months we seem to get fewer and fewer chips. Today we got 60-70% full, so little that we could actually shake the box and hear them rattle. I also know a number of people who have sadly left you to go to the “Dark side” (Golden Chippy) only because you scrimp on your chips!

Good fish and chips. Limited parking space in front of the restaurant. Walkable distance from Sainsbury’s parking - 80p/hour.

Nice food. Very fresh and not greasy at all. Very good portions. However, and I know that takeaways have got pricey, but this was a little bit expensive for just fish and chips

Whatever has happened to this fish shop??? Been coming here for around 10 years. Haven’t used for around 6 months and noticed the quality of the food has gone downhill immediately!! Such a shame as was the best fish shop around. Has it changed owners?? Who knows, but won’t bother returning!!

I’m shocked. I’ve been going to this place for 20 years, used to be the best around. Haven’t been for over 6 months but fancied a treat. The fish was just awful, grey flakey mush, batter was undercooked and raw on the ends, too much batter not enough fish. The chips were all had bad bits in them, like they’d used the cheapest nastiest potatoes. Price has rocketed. Photo shows some of my leftovers that were totally inedible. You can taste the oil and it tasted old. I won’t be returning. Just awful

Went on vacation from America last week and had a fish supper twice in this place. Both times the food was excellent and both times I couldn't finish it. Certainly THE BEST place around

Love this fish and chip shop. Travelling from London to visit a family member is always topped off with a trip to Barneys. Great portions, great quality, great service. Love it.

Terrible customer service and chewy fish! Ordered via deliveroo, everything fine untill we was serving our meals and missing a fish and chips (£13.50) and a jumbo sasuage (£3.50) to be told to contact deliveroo for a refund, asked why, told they cant give refund as its deliveroos problem, they dont have the drivers. When trying to explain that the delivery isnt the problem and that its there problem having not fulfilled our order, she repeatedly kept saying we have no driver's, claim a refund through deliveroo! Barney's plaice couldnt give two hoots about its customers who order via delivery. Safe to say we will NOT be returning due to this as well as the chewy fish and over priced! 😒

Don’t know if this business has changed hands or what but today I had my second experience of horrible fish. Not fresh at all and tough and chewey. Previously, I had enjoyed lovely fish and chips with nice fresh cod. Won’t be going to Barnies any more. Sorry

**HONEST GENUINE REVIEW** Fish is dreadful wont ever recommend the cod. It was definitely not fresh and hard from the inside. Seems like deep fried from frozen, you would expect a fish and chippy place to at least have their cods done fresh there and then. However I must say Chips was great, and free ketchup was given unlike many places who charge for it. **Overall wont be coming back, as paid £10 to eat chips with ketchup**

Ordered our usual from barneys, one item not delivered, called up to see if they can help and was met with a very unhelpful girl. Apparently when ordering through Deliveroo etc if an item isn’t delivered it’s not something they want to fix, very happy to take money for items they won’t replace. We were hung up on after trying to make a point that as Deliveroo is a delivery service only, the restaurant should take some responsibility if their food isn’t fully delivered to the customer. Shame barneys was our go to fish and chip shop, won’t be going back due to poor customer service

Brought 2 large haddock which were so small they would fit on a side plate. Also highly greasy with grease lying on bottom of box. Also had chicken breast portion and 10 onion rings. Couldn't believe when it cost me £26.00. Avoid like the plague. Save yourself a a load of money and cook it at home! Don't mind paying for food if it's good quality and cooked well which this wasn't.

I went to Barney's Plaice for a late supper and had a large piece of cod and a small portion of chips. The fish was cooked fresh while I waited and was still piping hot when I got home.

Sorry but won't be coming back you're highly recommended to us but the standard tonight at 7pm was bad chips so dry have nothing inside and the batter very chewey must say the fish was fine inside. Think this was due to being re-heated

Only ever had one bad experience at this place, and that was over Uber Eats. The driver gave us the wrong order, and it was pretty much closing so we couldn't get a replacement. We were refunded and all orders before and after this incident have been fresh and very tasty! Fair prices and big portions :)

"Best fish and chips in Cambridgeshire" no longer... This was previously a five star review but I've had to downgrade. Its marginal whether should be four stars, three may be more appropiate. Following change in ownership,the quality of the fish and chips has definitely worsened. The size of the fish has got smaller and the fish seems much greasier than before. Also they have stopped taking card payments cash only. It's notable that there are no longer queue outside the shop on Fridays.

Really gone downhill,this used to be the best chippy for miles around,don't know if it was just an off day yesterday but I don't know how the chips managed to be both greasier than John travolta AND taste burnt at the same time ?! The burger somehow tasted of anchovies which made me feel sick. And the prices are outrageous £3.50 for large chips,they are ordinary potatoes not gold leaf dusted chips from Gordon Ramsay.also noticed on the menu that cod is £7 and £9 ,wow you would think they were loch Ness monster steaks or something rare. The staff member was dead on his feet poor guy,looked like he needed propping up with a tripod .

Excellent nosh. Normally this is true but tonight we saw a different side to Barney's. The chips were only just warm and the fish was not fresh but very thin and either overcooked or left on display way too long. Price is up 20% too. Avoid during the week as trade is slow and your food is old.

Beat Fish and Chips in Huntingdon by far. They don't hold back on the amount of chips either, single-handedly ruined my diet!

Perfectly cooked chips and sausage. Not too greasy, ready instantly. The packaging is all compostable which is a big plus. Can see why people queue out the door here. I'll return

Been spending lots of money there for nearly 26 years however the new owner wouldn't give me free bottle of soft drink.

Just been to Barneys Place for fish and chips. Will be some time before I go there again fish was tasteless and like and old leather boot, chips were fine but a lot less quantity. To cap it all they have raised the price to £7.90p. There needs to be concessions to pensioners to be able to afford them. Yes I know I am a grumpy old age pensioner but if I purchase something that’s expensive I would expect to enjoy it.

Was shocked today to see that, despite being in COVID times where people want to handle cash as little as possible, Barneys say that they do not have a card machine so only accept cash regardless of amount. Sounds incredibly greedy to me - makes me think that they don’t want to pay the card charges or perhaps that they are not accounting for the right amount of VAT. Who knows .......

Ordered cod and chips and a portion of chips as my other half is vegetarian, got home and they had given me cod and chips and.......another piece of cod. How is it heavenly possible to mess up such a simple order.Barneys is now on my growing list of takeaways that I won't use again, which is a shame because their food is generally ok.

Simply super, but beware, if you go for the large fish and chips make sure you have a really big appetite.

Barney’s is the best chip shop in town! Fish is always really nice and tasty and not dry. The chips tasty really nice like oil is regularly changed.

Absolutely faultless fish and chips from Barney’s today, also sausage and chips and pie and chips apparently! We met our daughter and grandchildren in a nearby car park for a Covid friendly lunch - great company and amazing lunch!
