Barnacles in Bournemouth

We were in Bournemouth just for a 2 night break. Never been to Bournemouth before and I looked up where the best fish and chip shop is. It gave me Barnacles, my husband isn't a great lover of fish and chips but he said he would have some with me. Everything cooked fresh and we sat in the car and enjoyed them hot. Well what can I say, they was the best we have both had in a long time even my husband was very happy and very tasty. Well done to Barnacles keep up the good work 👍

Delicious fish and chips. Not greasy, and good sized chips. Great that they do an OAP size, perfect for smaller appetites. Reasonably priced, good portion sizes and friendly staff.

I got a bit confused about where you order from.

Chips ok, fish was chewy saveloy were hard and worst sausage we have had. We work it out to be 18.00 more here than our normal one it's very expensive. 1.50 for a can of coke :( pop across the road to coop for a 80p can. Service was good the lady was amazing but we won't be back if anything for the price

Haven't been to a chippy in years. Kids asked for cheesy chips. Barnacles definitely delivered. 3 very happy kids. Will definitely be popping in again

Sausage was ok. Chips were better. They are more expensive than my local chip shop.

I've been eating here for the last 10 years and I've never had anything other than excellent food. This is not my local chippy - I'm in East Cliff. Their fish and chips are unsurpassed. The cod is tender and a thick fillet, even the Cod Special for smaller appetites. The chips are thick cut and never pre-cooked. They are the best chips I've ever eaten - fresh, cooked to perfection. Nothing is too much trouble. The owners are warm, kind people. There is always a hello waiting for you and an acknowledgement of a returning customer. If Barnacles is closed then I wait for them to open again before having fish and chips. That way I know I won't be disappointed. Thank you Barnacles.

Overpriced, overcooked and greasy

The service was friendly and the pies are good. But on the whole it’s much more expensive than our usual chip shop and the chips really aren’t very nice, and they were a tepid temperature which didn’t help.

The restaurant food is very good, it is very clean, the greeters are very kind and polite, also the fish fish is very delicious.

With its 4.3 rating on Google I decided to visit The Barnacles fish and chip shop, it's a proper old style fish and chip so I was looking forward this experience. I ordered chips, battered sausage and pea fritter. The order was placed and I waited, it was quite busy with 4 other people ordered and waiting before me. 22 minutes later my order was ready. The chips being of various sizes and thickness so were unevenly cooked, some even on the raw side. The sausage was taken from the hot cabinet where I think it had been for most of the afternoon so the batter was rather chewy and not that warm. The pea fritter was soggy and literally fell apart on my first bite. So all in all I was slightly disappointed. Room for improvement I feel. I'm hoping it was just an off day.

These are the best fish and chips I have had. Ever! Lightly battered haddock and tasty chips with no grease in sight left me feeling I'd had a nutritious meal. It was cooked to perfection too! Queues out of the door says a lot! The staff are very friendly and helpful. Thank you!

Popped in for fish and chips. once ordered and paid for, we sat and waited whilst some fresh chips were put in the fryer. We noticed pre cooked fish on racks in the cabinet, I jokingly said to my wife "well at least the grease will have run out of them". Once the chips were cooked they bundled our food up and off we went. Once home and plated it soon became apparent the chips were lovely fresh and hot but the racked fish was almost cold and the batter was like shoe leather (a sensation we've not experienced before!) But did still have a lovely flavour. As we were ravenous by now we ate it. Please Mr Barnacle, cook the fish to order like other local establishments do, it would be so much nicer!

I have never eatn fish&chips like that in UK.

This chippie has changed hands a few times since we've been using it but the quality of the food has always been good. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

We find barnacles the best fish and chip shop we have dealt with. Always helpful and friendly. The owner buys special potatoes which makes lovely chips and we can order.

Sausage dry, not sure how long it had been sat around in the hot cabinet and chips over cooked. Both tasted like they'd been cooked using old oil. Not as good as it used to be :-( won't be returning or recommending.

The fish wasn't fresh and had been left in the front for an unknown amount of time. £9 for small unfresh fish and chips.

Food was edible if a little cold. Batter on the fish was crazy thick.

Went to this shop today. Order fish and chips, chicken burger, kids meal, and fish and chips. It was absolutely beautiful fish and chips. Family run business and take pride in their standards and could not do enough to make us feel welcome and the portion sizes are very generous. Would highly recommend this family run Fish shop. Thank you, thoroughly enjoyed.

I've been going here for quite a while for our Friday treat. Food is freshly prepared which means there's a wait but DEFINITELY worth it. Friendly service from happy staff. And when they ask if you'd like salt and vinegar tell them yes, it's the law. Always gets a smile. 🤣

Great Fish and Chips and service! Fish was really fresh and the chips were great. We had a regular portion and that was enough for us. Also very nice place, clean restaurant, welcoming staff.

Happy Staff, first time here as our usual and even it's backup were shut, this place was open til 9. If it was a bit closer to where we live it'd definitely be our new favourite as the chips were lovely! 😁👍

DO NOT GO!!! me and my 14 year old son ate from here and we have been in hospital from the backlash off the fish and chips.

Always busy so customers must appreciate the fine food, freshly cooked while you wait and friendly service.

Good food but very stingy on their portion sizes. A large chips from Barnacles would be called a small chips at any other chip shop. Buyer beware.

THE BEST fish and chips in Bournemouth. Came here during our visit to Bournemouth and am so glad we found this place! Crispy and crunchy batter, fresh fish and the yummiest fat chips all cooked to perfection! Must try you won't be disappointed!

Wow, what a pleasant surprise. I'm quite sure I've just had the best fish and chips I've ever had. I'd heard they were good, but I didn't expect the 'little local chip shop' to be the best place in the area for fish n' chips.

Barnacles is our local fish and chip shop, and do lovely fish and chips always hot and lovely fish...but today we got some and one piece of fish wasnt that good,more batter than fish and in two halves in the batter, very stringy and chewy we did eat it but wasnt great....

Tonight fish and chips not good what's happened

Im not usually the biggest fan of fish and chips, I very occasionally have it. However, my partner loves it and we came down to Bournemouth so it was only right to try some fish and chips I suppose. My goodness, Barnacles did not disappoint! The fish was so crispy on the outside yet beautifully cooked on the inside. We ate the fish and chips around 15 minutes after we got it as we wanted to wait until we got back to our hotel and to be honest, most chips aren't at their prime at that point but I still really enjoyed them! The fish however kept its perfect crunch throughout the car journey, very impressed!

My favourite fish and chip shop in the Winton/Moordown area. Cheaper than others nearby and always fresh and tasty chips, cod, pea fritters and battered sausages. Their Savaloy could be better though. Quick and friendly service too.

I checked Barnacles out whilst visiting Bournemouth for the day. It was a couple of miles from the seafront but had excellent reviews. It was absolutely worth it. Fantastic. I ate some of the meal there and finished the rest the next day in London. I wished I'd bought two portions. If you go to Bournemouth go to Barnacles. It should be a feature in their tourist information guide. Excellent.

This is actually not what I would describe as our local, but I'll be honest, I wish it was! Delicious, freshly battered fish, perfectly cooked, chunky chips, crisply battered, tasty sausage and extraordinary pea fritter! Lovely, polite, family service, and good value too. Worth the 5-10 minute drive from Charminster any time! 5*

Really impressed - I used google to find ‘best fish and chips Bournemouth’ and Barnacles was listed first so we thought we would try them. Friendly staff and excellent portions - the chips are nice and chunky. The fish was cooked perfectly (we had cod) and the batter had a really good flavour. They are boxed rather than just in paper so we could drive to the seaside and enjoy them there. Overall really impressed and would certainly recommend!

Placed order for 2 Large Cod, really disappointed, It was in no way Large, I thought I would try this place out , wish I had gone to Chez Fred, not cheap for what you gave me, I dont think you could of sliced the fish any thinner, a fishfinger is thicker. Really no way to keep customers coming back when I spent nearly £20.

Just purchased a chips and large battered sausage. Parked up and when I unwrapped it I was disgusted. The battered sausage is soggy and not crispy at all which makes me think it has been sat in there for hours. Definitely not freshly cooked. Revolting. Will not be going here again.

I know it's quite busy on friday evening but that's no excuse of serving awful fish. Half of it was empty,hard as a brick,entirely put me off. Will never use again. Staff are friendly tho but at the end of the day I want good food.

A traditionally highly rated fish & chip shop, this takeaway let's itself down by charging exorbitant prices for its fish. A large haddock here, for example, will set you back £6.50, but a nearby fish & chip shop just a few minutes down the road will charge you just a fiver for a similar order. However, the thick "steak cut" chips here are excellent and not at all greasy, a medium portion of chips costing £2.10. Five stars for the chips, but lost a star for its expensive fish pricing policy. Chips highly recommended.
