Barnacles in Stockton-on-Tees

Me and my husband treat ourselves once a week to fish and chips. When we got home and opened them we were disgusted at the size of each portion, they looked like a little portion for a pensioner or a child. Even the box was smaller, about a third smaller than the standard size. They weren't cheap either, over £11 per portion. We will never go there again.

Just called in the takeaway just a fish. I nearly fell over when j was told £7-50. £7-50 for just a fish £11 for fish & chips. Oxbridge fish bar Hartburn Fishbar. Average £8-50 /£9. For fish & chips. Absolutely a rip off. The girl who served me was lovely. Not her fault. But won't be going back soon no wonder it's empty

Stopped off here for lunch, small cod , chips and mushy peas with a pot of tea. Absolutely delicious, restaurant clean and tidy, friendly service. Good value, £10. Feeling peckish in Stockton this is the place to go.

We go ever Monday for what we call Barncles Monday And always lovely great plesant staff Only issue we have is sometimes my food arrives on two plates just put it on one The menu you used To get two fish cakes and I hate change so I still get that as what I always get. Anyway five star all day long

Not been in this one for a while, more recentlyat the one in Yarm. I have to admit though this one is just as good, if not better than Yarm. Excellent serice, reasonbly priced, and a red hot meal with fish as white as snow in lovely crispy batter. Nice staff friendly staff too, what more can you as for

The batter is soggy and tasteless and leaves a horrible greasy mouthfeel. And if you're indisposed towards oil (as most people are) you'll need to pack the gaviscon. The staff are still lovely and the restaurant is great but the food has gone downhill.

Went today paid £21 for fish and chips they were awful you could see through the fish it was that thin the chips looked like warm ups left the lot and the manageress was not interested in my complaint will never go back again and I willmake sure all my family and friends won't either can't even give it a star rating

Lovely lunch here today with the family- huge plates of fish and chips and lots of sauce options to accompany the dish. Joanne served us and was very friendly and efficient - great service with a smile. I would recommend this to anyone in the area looking for a yummy lunch!

First time I’ve been and won’t rush back...Food took a long time to come even though it was just toasties and 2 plates of chips. Table served that had come in after ours. By the time ours was served drinks were finished or cold.

Lovely fish and chips, we got there near closing time but the server made sure we had our order in time & we were not rushed, lovely lady, very friendly

Fish and chips were of a good quality,chips were excellant Service was efficient despite it being busy Staff were attentive Atmosphere was ok despite a very large family of small children

food is good, no frills place, needs a good deep clean and a refit (just grease film on ceiling, things like that. am happy to eat here, do not expect intellectual conversation, but you will see how the locals interpenetrate "child care"

We used to visit this restaurant on a regular basis years ago when it was very blue & had fishing nets/ anchors etc up inside as decoration. The restaurant is completely different now - very bare & plain. It looks much more modern but feels like it lacks any atmosphere. The food (fish & chips, fishcake & chips) was very tasty, huge portion sizes and good value for money. The staff were friendly & service was good.

We have never had a bad meal . It’s not greasy , the staff are helpful . What’s not to like . Their fish batter is light and enhances the fish . I’d like to mention Chloe as a very kind member of staff, chatty and helpful .

Well barnacles use to be a lovely cosy friendly resturant to visit food would be hot and lovely friendly staff and pleasure to sit and have a meal. But over the last couple of years it just keeps going down hill. Visited today to see it had another refit again it just looked bare no character or quality to the place bit like an empty shell should adding more photos or put it how it use to be with the pictures and decorations least it made it feel warm and cosy. But today the heating didnt work staff couldnt help with that problem certain dressing off the menu just unavailable because they had reopened im sure at dinnertime you would of been open for a few hours its plenty of time to make some coleslaw up if you agree to have it on the menu. The food tasted bland and greasy the staff miserable as always didnt like asking you asking them to get you anything. Then as one of our guests decided to use the toilet this seemed to be a problem with staff going mad because it was out of order how are customers meant to know this if you dont put signs up saying out of order which if you just opened after a refit surely this problem should of been fixed. It wasnt a pleasure to come here and waste money on a terrible meal and unfriendly customer service. And i have been visiting here since i was a child i can certainly say i wont be returing like all the other barnacles restaurant's seem to be closing i wonder how long it will be before this one does the seem you need to make changes fast.

Exceptional fish and chips, fast and friendly service, nice dining experience. It is obvious why they are an award-winning restaurant with over 25 years of establishment.

Visited SIRF. Brilliant festival and hungry work so got chips. They were a pale cold dish of greasy limpness. Yuk!!!!!

Went here for lunch and it was terrible small shoppers lunch small cod chips and peas and half a slice of bread yes I say again half a slice of bread not a full slice but half a slice butterd both sides plus I didn't know you could get bread that thin.fish was greasy and just warm chips were scrappy .Would I go here again that's A big NO give it a miss. A lady next to us had very well done scamp (burnt) on our way out a comment we heard said Was look at all the food that's been left.0

Not been in here for a good few months and yes had a lick of paint, but myself and my Mam sat there 15 minutes trying to get the attention of the staff all walked passed us, eventually we got served, the food was ok and warm, won't be rushing back anytime soon.

He ido a este restaurante de pescado y un montón de veces, y chip en mi última visita me di cuenta de que el restaurante ha tenido una renovación y que lamentablemente han cambiado el menú y ya no sirve mi adorado Skate y patatas fritas. Este será mi último viaje a este restaurante. Las gambas y las patatas fritas que tenía estaban cocidas.

Visitamos hoy con mi marido y Gran Nana, el restaurante está decorado para la temporada y tenía música pegadizas en el fondo.

Mi amigo y yo llame té cuando nos compras de navidad y estamos recibidos por una camarera simpática. El ambiente era relajante y el servicio rápido. Pedimos especial de las compras de bacalao, patatas, guisantes, pan blanda opcional con una variedad de té o café. Era encantador y caliente y la camarera realzado nuestra visita por ser tan servicial y amable. Un dulce sabroso en una noche de invierno.

No han sido aquí en años, cuando viven en el Noreste este era el lugar para comer pescado y patatas fritas, pero solían hacer una oferta en lo que llaman comer Fuerte y a mi asombro aún no ellos!

Esta fue mi primera vez comiendo aquí en más de un año, es un lugar ideal restaurante fish n chips que puedes entrar mientras compras! Pedí el gambas y mi hijo tenía el abadejo con patatas fritas, cocinadas a la perfección y eran generosas porciones de buen tamaño, quizás demasiado generoso para mí con un pequeño apetito. El único aspecto negativo fue que tenía una larga espera para la camarera para venir y tomar nuestro pedido, pero una vez hecho esto, la comida llegó bastante rápido después. Percebes es razonable, limpio y volveremos.

Fish and chips to take away should always be a treat. Unfortunately this time was a disappointment and the fish was overcooked. I have used the restaurant before and that was much better.

As has been stated elsewhere this is a Stockton institution. Good value, particularly the Shoppers Special at £8.99 with cod, chips, peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea. Freshly cooked and free wifi to boot! What's not tolike?

Popped in yesterday afternoon to get a Cod & Chips. Staff were fine whilst ordering and when taking payment. When I started to eat my fresh fish and chips in the shop and put salt and vinegar on my food for flavour as most people do i, I noticed the food had a very mild almost non existant taste of vinegar so i put some more on thinking it wasnt enough. Despite that there was no improvement in flavour, the vinegar tasted weak and over-diluted. When this was pointed out to the staff member, Tina, who gave me the food, I was told that they do water the vinegar as it condensed, and thats how it comes. She wasnt even listening to me properly, with her back turned to me.Now I'm not an expert in condiments however I do know what vinegar should taste like, especially on some fish and chips!!! So I further explained that the watered down vinegar has made my fish and chips all soggy and taste horrible and watery, and not at all of vinegar and this has spoiled my food. Tina the managers response was to shrug her shoulders and say "Well we cant do anything about that, theres nothing wrong with the food". Not even an offer to get proper vinegar!!! I further explained that the food is not for for consumption as my fish and chips have gone watery and have no flavour of vinegar. Tinas excuse over and over again was that no one has complained before and they serve this vinegar in the restaurant too. So I asked to speak with the manager to which I was told Tina was the manager! Great!!!Upon further frustating 5 minutes of talking I was told that I was wrong and the vinegar was fine, even though I tasted the vinegar serpately and it was like water that smelt of vinegar. I aked for a printed copy of the recipt was initially refused this. and I felt the staff were very cheeky and disrespectful in the way they spoke to me, talking about me to each other in front of me. They made me feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable.Finally after waiting another 10 mins and insisting for a reciept and the details of the owner, the details was given to me on a ripped up piece of paper with £5.60 written on the back, and a name to forward a written complaint to.The manager and staff werent even bothered when I mentioned I will be complaining about them to Trading Standards! They said "just go ahead"!!!I have a few questions:Why on earth is vinegar scented water out on the counter, which has no flavour, and will make the food taste horrible and soggy???What kind of manager speaks to a customer rudely and doesnt find it serious when trading standards have been mentioned???What kind of owner allows their staff damage their business like this - only to save a few pennies on vinegar???CONCLUSION:AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE - TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE & WATERED DOWN CONDIMENTS MAKE THIS A PLACE TO MISS WHEN LOOKING FOR FISH AND CHIPS IN STOCKTON ON TEES - A BAD REPRESENTATIVE FOR BARNACLES

We visited here an hour ago as we were hungry and the smell of fish and chips made our mouths water. How wrong we were. I should've known they were going to be poor when every plural item on the board included an apostrophe! The bread bun was soggy, chips stale and the curry was lumpy and cold. In fact, the assistant hadn't put the lid on properly so it leaked everywhere. I was charged for jumbo sausages when in reality I bought small so basically everything was wrong. Wouldn't recommend, wouldn't go back and if you've got fillings or loose teeth beware.

Food discusting, staff attitude and customer service discusting, I will never return ! Think they need a big big improvement

If you want a fancy night out or to take someone on a special date do you go to Barnacles? No.You go when you fancy a fish n chip meal, slightly greasy and you know you'll feel guilty about it afterwards. And it does the job very well.Anyone growing up in Stockton will know the place and will have been in many times over the years. It has had a refurbishment meaning the green decor and fishing paraphernalia has now gone to be replaced by a brown and cream cleaner look but in a way Barnacles has lost some of its character going for a classier look (It did need the dinner mats replacing though).I got the Fishcakes and chips and glad to see they are back to serving two Fishcakes as this was reduced to one "larger" one for a period of time (no-one fell for that) and they are still as great and filling as they always were. My partner had fish and chips and enjoyed a good sized portion. Little fellow in tow had sausage, chips and beans and enjoyed it. They were really good by providing him with crayons and colouring book to keep him occupied which is a touch many parents will be happy with even though the wait is never long.No healthy options but if you want to go to Barnacles for a Salad or a healthy option then you are not really thinking straight. Good at what it does.+ Great fish and chip restaurant+ Look after children+ Quick and attentive service- not too keen on new decor- toilets desperately need updating.

visited before going to The Arc theatre across the road.It was 40 mins before closing time so quite empty but the staff were very friendly and attentive.I opted for the 'shoppers special' cod,chips,mushy peas,bread and butter and a pot of tea.the batter was melt in the mouth and the cod was beautiful and white, a generous portion of chips which I struggled to finish.I left the resturant very full and very happy, I will definately eat here should I visit Stockton again

Barnacles used to be a great place to go but looks like they spent all their money on the refurb and now buy sub standard food the fish was the smallest we have seen and the staff didn't have a clue serving customers in the wrong order seems there new motto is last in first served...Will never set foot in there again...Really terrible all around.

Lovely fish and chips. Not too greasy and reasonably priced. Located in the centre of the high street it's really handy. Nosh boxes are really good and worth a try.

We come here quite often for our Friday afternoon treat and since it had been decorated it is a far better place to come. The food is great and always fresh and will be certainly a regular Friday afternoon treat.

Visited the restaurant on Sunday 12/05/15. Soon as I opened the door a young waitress in a very abrupt tone shouted we are closing in ten minutes. Now bear in mind I was in a party of 5 I would think a modern day business would not refuse business. The very bad attitude from the waitress continued when I questioned her. In the end another business benefited from my money. Will never visit again and will advise anyone I know not to as well.

I made the mistake of going to the takeaway section of Barnacle's in Stockton-On-Tees. The girl serving asked me to repeat my order half a dozen times as she couldn't remember what I had asked for. I was only getting a very simple order for two people. I also made the mistake of asking for a milkshake! I then got to witness one of the staff being very rude and derogatory to a more senior member of the waiting team before she spilt the drink all over the floor. We then had to wait an excessive amount of time for the drink to be replaced. Not impressed! Then certainly not impressed with the tiny sausage and mushy chips that we eventually got to eat. I remember when Barnacles served quality food, obviously no longer.

I visited this Fish and Chip restaurant May 26th 2015, at lunch-time. I had the biggest Fish and Chips, I have ever had.The restaurant was very clean, tastefully decorated and comfortable.The staff were very courteous, polite and attentive.The order was taken immediately and the meal was served very quickly, piping hot.The price was very good and the quality of food was excellent. The batter was light and crispy. The fish was very fresh and the chips were not soggy, but well cooked.A very enjoyable meal. Highly recommended !!

Visited on a number of occassions but not for over a year. The service was very good and the waitress was very friendly and helpful.My friends who had the sausages and chips and cod and chips enjoyed them. I had the haddock but thought that the batter on this was a little sad. Plus the vinegar was not up to usual chip shop standards

Called in for lunch as we had heard this place was good. We were not disappointed - fresh, nicely cooked white cod in crispy batter, served with golden chips. Great value, well worth a visit.

Food is nice staff are nice too. Cany complain really just since the refurbishment it looks so bare inside.

Visited yesterday lunchtime, Fish and Chips and a hot drink. Good value for money. OK it's not A La Carte food but for the price you can't fault it. Staff member that served me was pleasant and came over mid meal to check everything was alright.Ideal place for a quick, reasonably priced lunch.

Love this food. Their gravy is the best I've ever tasted. The 2 I have used are the stockton centre takeaway and billingham centre restaurant. The stockton one is fine, no problem and the Billingham one has waiting times when it's busy

We have used Barnacles for many many years but having discovered the superb SurfSide at Seaton Carew, haven't visited there recently.The Stockton restaurant has been refurbished and whilst more contemporary now, the lighting is dim and the seating cramped with chairs blocking access to tablesThe fish was thin, grey and flaccid even though well done was requested. The scampi was chewy and cooked in the wrong temperature. We didn't pay for that as it was largely inedible.Staff were very pleasant but to us, this place has deteriorated markedly in terms of food quality.

Went in after the stockton lights switch on to an employee asking a manager as she took our order what time we close asif to say if there past the closing time kick them out so I can go home. We let that slide, then the girl who took our order brought out cutlery abd just plonked it on the table, my knife was upside down. Staff were very lazy and unhelpful. The only upside was that the food was delicious! Cannot fault it! It's just the resteraubf waitresseses need a reshuffle or to give their heads a shake! You could see they all could just not be bothered after their extreamly difficult three hour shift, next time we will just go to the takeaway!

I have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. The captains table is good value, particularly if u love thick white cod. Will be back again soon.
