Met with huffs and a very judgmental attitude from the man with glasses when my partner asked what a ‘cruffin’ was. The wait staff were very cold from then on when giving us our order. My partner has autism so he can come across abrupt (but definitely not rude) but I’m not sure why asking about food whist being a customer in a café was a problem, the interaction was very strange. Glad to see from other reviews that it wasn’t just us that felt this way about the staff.

Nice coffee and friendly staff. The loud beating music was too much for me first thing in the morning. The music isn’t necessary at all in my option as the place has a nice buzz of chatter and coffee machine noises already.

The positives. Great coffee and potential to be a niche, go-to place. However, having been there several times, the welcome received has been less than warm. This applies to all the staff except the young woman with the ginger bob haircut.

I've been going here for years and the coffee has been consistently FAB. The staff are also really friendly and usually up for a chat/happy to answer questions. At the moment, they have some delicious chocolate and Biscoff cookies which are delicious. This really is the perfect spot for coffee, cake and reading the paper.

This cafe is located near the gym I have been using for the last 8 months after which every Saturday at the same time, I buy a coffee to drink in. Twice a month I buy a coffee on a Sunday also. And every time I am served by the same staff however today was the last time. There has never been a personable greeting from the staff despite clearly being a regular. The waiting / service service times have always been longer than one would expect but the location has suited, the coffee is good and there are always seats (!) However this has been getting worse and after a 25 min wait today, the frosty reception of chasing it up with the staff as if I were an inconvenience (nail on the head to the reviewer below) is totally unacceptable.

I also go here when I'm in Leigh, because: 1. They make a proper cup of tea 2. Their sandwiches and salads are super tasty 3. Their cakes are always spot-on. I mean, what's not to like? They're an independently run coffee shop (and therefore probably pay their taxes) so go give them your cash. I hear they do a nice coffee too although I don't really drink the stuff.

This is a lovely café that could easily be missed as it is down one of the alleys in Leigh's one-way triangle. It is so worth a visit as it is a lovely place for either lunch or just a drink/ slice of cake. Lunch is limited but really delicious ..one minor criticism is that you can only choose 5 salad options now for a 'large plate' whereas before it was possible to have a little of everything. Shame really that you felt the need to change this as I feel it is a detrimental change as your lunch is limited to salads & a slice of your 'filled bread' only anyway. However I love the ethos of this place & the big variety of drinks you offer, especially the matcha green tea and that you cater for people who are dairy/ Gluten free and so do recommend a visit. Much better than Costa round the corner!

Just love Barlow and Fields. Best coffee in the area. Simon and Ash who run the business really know how to serve excellent coffee, and they are passionate about what they do, Have been going to Barlow and Fields regularly ever since they opened. Have met a great bunch of people that have become friends. They do delicious layered sandwich slice and salads for lunch. For breakfast I love their fruit pot, muesli with yoghurt, berries and a drizzle of honey. I have noticed a couple of comments about the rude staff and this is definitely not the case. Maybe when these people have been in it's been busy and the guys are rushed off their feet. I shouldn't actually be writing this review because I don't want anyone else to discover it as it's busy enough.

Lunchtime Sunday. Choice of loaf based sandwich and variety of salads. Choice of small or large plate. The offering is surprisingly filling. I'm 14 stone and 6 foot tall. Small plate was sufficient for me. Coffee - I can't recall what it was called (like a carafe ) however the coffee tasted beautiful. Smooth, smooth. No after burn (and I don't mean the temperature ). I've seen B & F called "quirky". My view is that expression is wrong for this establishment for quirky means unpredictable. That's unfair. I would say "different ' in the best possible way. We will return. If you've not been then try it. Oh yes, only nice pleasant people will enjoy it. P*****ks won't -so please stay away.

We visited on a Thursday lunch time to be met by ash, the gentleman at the front counter, who was very welcoming and friendly and quickly explained the process and the prices. There were two portion sizes to choose from, wether eating in or taking out, this allows you to mix and match what you fancy for a fixed price. The regular plate was £7 and the smaller plate was £4.50, and there was a fresh selection of 8 different types of colourful and vibrant salads, and also the choice of two sandwiches, one meat and one vegetarian. They also have a small selection of sweet treats and is easily a place that you can stop in for a coffee. The atmosphere was warming and easy going, but the cafe itself is quite cozy and only has a few tables, which gives it that exclusive feel. Overall was a pleasant visit and will definitely be returning!

My only small complaint is there is no screen to protect the food from customers if they cough or sneeze(!) I also love how much thought and love they have put into their business, from the furniture design to the handwritten signage. If I had to complain about anything else? There was just the one sandwich on offer but it was so much more than just a sandwich. It was lovely bread ( I suspect supplied by the local excellent Birdwood sourdough bakery - I spotted the familiar packaging) filled with lots of different cold meats, cheese and various vegetables. All layered up as a whole loaf and then sliced as customers request it.The salads were amazing and all really unusual making this a real foodies paradise. The cake was good too.The coffee is simply the best I've had. This place really is a gem with its understated style and quality. I came across it by chance and am so glad that I did! Leigh is filled with various types of eateries and most of them are good in their own way but Barlow and Fields is something a bit different. The way the food is served feels innovative and it is appetisingly presented. We had a delicious and exciting selection of salads with an interesting slice of "scooby-snack" sandwich - you can choose for a fixed price for a small or large plate full. My green tea came with an egg-timer so that I could remove the leaves from the tea pot at the optimum time - great idea. My friend's latte was beautifully presented with artistically designed frothy milk on the top. The boys who run the place are charming and we spent a cosy afternoon eating, drinking and chatting without feeling that we had over-stayed our welcome. Oh and the cakes are delicious too! There are gluten free options and soya milk for tea and coffee. Of all the places in Leigh this one feels like it has captured the Brighton spirit the most. It offers simplistic quality at its best.

I love this place, the food is always brilliant especially for a veggie like me. The food so beautifully presented, the coffee is the best and the two chaps who run it are just so friendly. A lovely find and always look forward to going back.

Have no idea what the below review is going on about. I'm sat in here at the moment and its full up, coffee is terrific and service is first class. I don't own it and I don't work in here (I'd drink too much coffee) it just serves the best coffee in Leigh. Ash and Simon are always welcoming and it's a great place to relax and chat with friends, family or the person you happen to sit near. Love it in here.

Visited Barlow and Fields and was under the impression from trip advisor we were visiting a restaurant, however upon entering we found a small but trendy cafe. They had a small counter with a very limited selection of dishes from which you could have a plate and fill it with whatever you wanted from a choice of around 9-10 different dishes (potato salad/stuffed loaf/olives etc). They serve coffee's and drinks but to be fair it is not really a restaurant where you have a wide variety of dishes from which you can choose. I would totally recommend this place for a coffee and/or light bite but a traditional definition of a restaurant - no way!

The stuffed loaf is delicious- always tasty- and- with the assorted salad, makes a wonderful, good priced lunch. The service is friendly and relaxed. I would heartily recommend this place for lunch. It can be difficult to find as it is in one of the alleys in Leigh.

Visited one afternoon as we wanted a healthy salad. the flavours were lovely and the staff were friendly and polite however there wasnt alot left and instead of saying this they tried to split it between 4 and we all ended up with 2 potatoes each from the potato salad and not much each of the other stuff. it was a shame as it was lovely.

Ash and Simon have a great attitude towards their cafe. They really care about their clientele, trying to learn customer's names for example, and their coffee reputation is second to none, plus they have a great choice of teas. They serve healthy, appealing food, with a regularly changing menu. Lovely little details too, like egg timers for your tea, a typewriter guestbook, and map where you can pin where you're from! The place is also somewhat of a hub for local creative talent, and you may rub shoulders with DJ's, comedians, writers etc. Well worth a visit. Food is a little pricey, but probably about right for the area.

The surroundings and furnishings are quirky, the proprietors extremely friendly and accommodating and the coffee is as good as it gets. Unlike many places it is consistently good - always the same - you can rely on it. Highly recommended to all coffee lovers. Enjoy

Right at this point salads are so good and mixes are can ffight against the London stores if your tourist just go there and have a look these lads are amazing.

Often the atmosphere in a cafe/restaurant is just as important as the food and drink. After all if you feel happy and comfortable, chances are what you are consuming will taste good. At Barlow and Fields it's hard to discern what is best; the food is great, the coffee is amazing and Ash and Simon help make the atmosphere fantastic. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that it is all good... I told Ash when he first opened the place that the only downside was that the premises would be too small... Move over "Costa" there's a new potential franchise on the Block!

I should declare an interest, I go here every weekend and consider the coffee bar owners and users as my friends and I almost don't want you to go in case I cannot get in for my fix! Before we even get to the coffee, you hit the atmosphere which is warm and welcoming from, Simon, Ash, Sarah, Imogen and Jo underpinned by an eclectic music choice which is loud enough to be heard but not to rob you of the opportunity to chat. The coffee is amazing, as is the latte art! This really is the best coffee in Leigh-on-sea, if not Essex. If I drank tea, I would drink it here as the right infusion is timed by an old-fashioned egg timer to give you just the infusion. Cakes are home made and often with unusual ingredients like courgettes, beetroot and always a gluten-free alternative with just enough to soak up your drink. Salads are made up daily depending on Simon's inspiration and are a great companion to the mega sandwich... now a firm favourite of mine.Go, the coffee, tea, food and atmosphere will not disappoint

Always a good atmosphere in Barlow and Fields. The staff are friendly and you get the feeling that they really enjoy doing what they do. The food is always nice and fresh and is really excellent value. Being a coffee man, I'd go nowhere else. I'll even make the extra journey if I'm not in leigh, but nearby, as they make coffee better than anyone in the area. Nice to just sit and drink coffee and try one of their ever changing choice of cakes, whilst making use of the free WIFI. Or have lunch for less than £10. All in all, my favourite place to go in Essex.

I mainly visit Barlow and Fields for delicious coffee and scrumptious cake. This visit I had lunch which consisted of loads of interesting and freshly made salads. (and i succumbed to a delicious piece of chocolate and orange cake after!!) The owners Ash and Simon have fab knowledge of making good coffee. It's served at the correct drinking temperature. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. It's well worth a visit if you are in Leigh. It's not been open very long but I'm sure it will be a good success, it already has it's regulars.

Regularly visit Barlow & Fields, mainly for coffee and scrumptious cake. But occasionally for lunch too. Whilst they haven't been open a year yet. Ash, Simon and Sarah, the business owners have a big following of regulars. Great atmosphere and friendly service. Simon and Ash take their business seriously and aim for perfection. Lunches consist of various interesting salads and their special sandwich. A must to visit if you are ever in Leigh.
