Barbours Department Store in Dumfries & Galloway

Had lunch in the restaurant and loved the experience. Friendly staff, great food and excellent value for money. Chocolate and coconut scones with mountains of fresh cream are worth a return visit. Good to find somewhere like this still exists. Very satisfied customers.

A very pleasant experience which reminded me of when I was a child and was taken to different department stores in Edinburgh by my other for lunch or afternoon tea. On our visit to Barbours,we only had coffee and cake, but lunches were beginning to be served and looked to be hearty, traditional fayre. The staff were kept busy but greeted everyone with a friendly welcome and were helpful and efficient. I would definitely return if in the area.

Looking for a place to eat in Dumfries which isn't a pub is not an easy task even on a Saturday afternoon.But realising there was a restaurant upstairs in Barbour department store that was a pleasant surprise.Window seat and two hearty meals later we left satisfied customers. And a nice pot of tea.

This is a traditional department store which sells good quality products which you can browse en route to their café on the first floor overlooking Buccleuch Street - there is a small elevator or you can take the stairs. It caters for breakfast and lunch. The menu consists of a variety of light bites such as soups, toasted sandwiches, paninis, salads, baked potatoes and of course cakes with tea & coffee. There are also usually a few choices of traditional mains dishes if you’re looking for something a bit more substantial. Table service is provided and the surroundings and atmosphere hark back a little to the days when ladies would lunch and chatter. They still do. It was a favourite place for my mother who is less able to visit nowadays however I took the opportunity to have lunch there with my wife who had previously heard about the place but had never seen it. It turned out to be just as she had imagined. We ordered a couple of paninis which were served with coleslaw and a salad garnish. The food was nice enough and delivered fairly promptly. We followed this up with some cake and coffee which were also good and brought our bill to just over £30 which we thought was reasonable. I’ve never tried it here but I expect they offer afternoon teas which are back in fashion in general.

Another delicious breakfast today in one of Dumfries hidden gems restaurant is located on upper floor accessed by ither stairs or lift it’s a large open airy space which opens around 915 in morning serving breakfast fresh scones amoungst other tasty delights then offering lunch menus with daily specials food is local sourced cooked fresh and rather tasty

Didn't enjoy any of this,the staff,were really nice,but the food was not,I had a toasties,which wasn't a toasties,the. Coleslaw was not home made and my salad had,1 little piece of tomato,no,onion,egg,but lots of brown lettuce,yuck

The best value lunch in Dumfries it's a little bit retro but thats it's charm the food is always good the service is great and it's exceptionally well priced we got lunch for three of us last week and had change from £25 !

I do enjoy dining in barbours good healthy food no deep fried stuff just home made quality food and lovely coffee and staff I used to dine else where when in town but now when I lunch in town it’s between here and some other place great scones too

One of the hidden gems of Dumfries located on the upper floor of barbours department store accessible via lift or stairs this is perfect for breakfast and lunches the staff are extremely pleasant and accommodating I opted for a chicken pie which was really tasty with potatoes and veg have dined here a few times extremely clean and can be busy it’s well worth a visit lovely daily scones too

Four of us visited for lunch yesterday, which we all enjoyed. Two had soup and sandwich combo (carrot and coriander soup was excellent), another had quiche of the day and the fourth member of our group had a baked potato with cheese and beans. All of this followed by 3 lattes and a pot of tea. Whilst we can't fault the food, the mystery remains of the queues outside the cafe to the top of the stairs. We appreciate that at 1pm there will be a lunchtime demand, and as we were a group of 4 then we would need to wait for a suitably sized table. It was only as we were being seated at our table for 4 (20+ minutes later) that I noticed a complete section of empty tables, probably 6-8 of them. If they were short-staffed, and had closed this section off, then it might have been courteous to explain this to those waiting rather than merely announcing that there will be a wait as there were no available tables. Opted to just give an average rating, as despite the food being good and the cost reasonable £10 per head approx) there are better cafes elsewhere in town so at best this would have been very good, now minus one for unnecessary queues.

Went with friends for lunch the meal was great and the staff lovely .We were not rushed and had a lovely hour catching up with each other.

I have been to Barbour's Restaurant now a few times this year and am pleased to say it has been consistently good. I appreciate that since COVID times have been hard for not only businesses but for people in general as money is tight and when you do go out, you want a good product at a reasonable price. Barbours does this helped by having lovely staff who go above & beyond to help every time. The food is exceptional and great value and if you like scones, it's a must. I would highly recommend a visit 👍.

Had our Tetrad Harris tweed furniture from Barbours last autumn. They price-matched for us, and we felt we had a personalised service throughout. We consciously decided to use a local firm with local knowledge, and were impressed throughout.

Womens fashion../..shoes. Little or no interaction with customer .Lack of conversation or interest regarding custimers visit. Poor customer service

The shop has a few good ranges -the cafe serves revolting coffee - inedible food and as for the rough and ready foul staff in the cafe ! please avoid this cafe and go to the many other local offerings .

When I am in Dumfries I always visit Barbours. Polite friendly attentive staff and great customer service. Nice coffee too.

I have to say working in Retail myself that the customer service was awful. Retail assistant never acknowledged me at all .Never helped with sizing or offered any product knowledge Never assisted me with the clothing to the dressing room I walked around with items on my arm ... Had to then ask assistant for sizes all this time no at no point visited the dressing room to enquire if I needed assistance.No conversation or interest in me as a customer or my requirements.. No upselling or offers of other similar or sale items that I might be interested in. Retail assistants presentation poor ..and for what is an upmarket store with high end items very dissappointing. All departments that I visited showed very poor customer service. Homewares and mens not much better.

It's so nice to visit Barbour's restaurant and get table service. It certainly beats queueing in other places. Good cup of coffee and best bacon roll in the town. Very reasonably priced. Nice to have a wee look in the store as well.

I saw a beautiful dress online at Barbour's - and it was still available in my size in the store. It had red floral patterns in it so perfect for our Ruby anniversary. Got to the store and there were none.

No visit to Dumfries is complete without a visit to Barbours. What I love about it is the old style service and the independent status. You have the opportunity of buying different merchandise from the chain stores.

Quite an old fashioned but charming cafe/restaurant in the lovely department store. Lots of breakfast choices then lunch time mains for about £6, plus snack choices too. Plenty scones, cakes and puddings to choose from. Excellent value.

This is a pleasant cafe but it does feel like a reversion to the days of High Teas. I would not have been surprised to have been asked to wear a tie. Nevertheless it is clearly very popular and the food is fine.
