Barbakan Delicatessen in Manchester

Loved it!! Just went here on a whim before a day of study and really set us up for the day! We were so excited about everything there was to offer, and had a delicious sausage and egg barm which fueled us up for the day. The loaves looked so so delicious and we will definitely be coming back here again to buy one!!

This is my second time going recently to get a pastry and both times have been a let down. The pastries (a pain au chocolate and another similar one) were both stale. I used to love this place but having gone recently and also looking at the recent reviews it seems to be an issue deeper within.

A lot of reviewers are saying this place is overpriced and I happen to agree. Hot sandwiches are close to £8 which is astronomical, a price I would pay in New York City for the equivalent.

I went in and found no sandwiches. Asked if they could make one and they said no. I remember when it was under previous ownership they’d always make you a fresh sandwich on request.

The food is overpriced — you can find similar products elsewhere for half the price. The "Polish bread" isn’t even close to authentic. One of the staff members sliced it without asking, but when I requested a whole one instead, she had no problem with it. Staff is rude, and shout from distance, instead of coming closer.

Amazing food, fantastic variety of an amazing quality. An absolute must visit!

Friendly staff and great breads etc.

Came in yesterday for the first time and was really impressed by the quality and variety - I’ve seen a few comments on prices and I can say you get what you pay for here, everything was delicious. I tried some of the bagel bites and they were to die for (especially the chorizo one) 10/10

I'm very happy with the food. I don't even think one can grumble too much about the prices. The staff, however, are among the most obnoxious I've ever encountered. I'd already had one or two bristling encounters, but my doubts really started to mount in 2022 as a little Rumpelstiltskin fella behind the counter treated anyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot of his reactionary and inaccurate takes on the teachers strike going on at the time. It was quite ironic to hear about lazy teachers not doing a day's work from a man whose tirade of self-opinionated bile was bringing service to a near grinding halt. Since then, I've noticed a fairly recurring pattern of just rude and obnoxious service from many of the servers. Impatience when you're deciding what to get. Acting like it's your fault when asking what is in some of the unlabelled sandwiches, a seeming inability to ask politely to scan any drinks you've picked up - just hand stretched out and look of contempt, lots of assumptions that you are a mind reader and a general snarky tone. The wide eyed one who looks like she has been popping a load of Ritalin is particularly obnoxious and a lady with glasses and red hair also has quite a rude manner about her.

Great food and unique atmosphere best for breakfast

Love a morning trip to Barbakan, I’m so happy to see they’ve started to do more vegan options. The vegan crown danish and the vegan sausage roll are both ridiculously good. Best I’ve ever had. Please never stop making them! We love them

Normally a decent experience here. Just been in in the middle of the day and the kitchen is closed for a bit so no sizzlers. OK, fair enough. No sandwiches either. 🤨 I ask the staff to make me a sandwich and they proceed to get a loaf and put it in a bag, measure out coleslaw into a tub (£1.99) etc etc. telling me they have no way to charge me for a cheese and coleslaw sandwich unless I make it myself. Is this a weird dream? Am I still normal if I expect staff in a deli to be able to make me a simple sandwich? 🤔 It’s not the fault of the staff although the vibe in here does seem to have dipped recently. They just don’t have the autonomy to do simple things, clearly. I gave up in the end and went to Tesco. How depressing. What are visitors from NYC gonna think!? Come on Barbakan, giz a butty already! 😫

Had lunch here. Not much of a selection for sandwiches, but ok. Sat outside with some seating available.

Come here most weeks for their barmcakes which I must say are lovely! Picked up a lemon and poppy seed muffin today too and its probably the most underwhelming cake I've ever bought. Very disappointed with it and wouldn't buy again. Expensive too. The staff are also very hit and miss here. You either get pocket rocket Christine who is amazing and a credit to the company (as is the older lady red hair, glasses) or you get somebody who is really miserable and literally looks like they'd rather be anywhere else but there. There's no inbetween 😂 I've tried other things over time which have also been lovely. Cherry scones, bagels, loaves. All quite expensive but you do get what you paid for. Have been coming here for over 20 years and will continue to do so if only for the gorgeous bread!

I think the food is REALLY overpriced and for some reason the prices have recently increased, when it was already very expensive for what you get. I went in once and asked to get couscous but was told by staff that the product seemed to be not as good quality as it usually is, so they didn’t sell it to me. I respect that approach, however I asked if they’d sell it at a discount then since I didn’t mind, but they told me they couldn’t and so it would get thrown away. I think that’s a huge waste of food. I thought the staff were generally unenthusiastic and some of the staff members I’ve interacted with I thought were actually cold and rude. I definitely didn’t feel any temptation to spend a large amount of money on a small amount of food, given how unwelcome I felt because of the staff’s attitude. I really hoped it would have a sense of a nice, friendly small business community, but it felt cold and quite corporate with little consideration for the customer, so I didn’t feel as generous as I would’ve felt had it been more welcoming and appealing. As for the food’s taste, what I have tried so far has felt underwhelming. Definitely not worth the cost in my opinion. Hope it improves!

Food was ok, especially polish bread and cakes, but defo overpriced. I was travelling from Sale to buy food there, but last time I was standing 20 mins there with no queue ...when 5 staff members were chatting ... Defo They've seen me and ignored , so I left the bakery , such a arogant behavior, Sorry Barbakan - that was my last visit there

The fresh bakery is superb and keeps the missus constantly happy when we head over. The service is always with a smile and the queues can be long but they go down in no time

Esperaba algo muy agradable haber visitado antes, pero muy decepcionado 3 pasteles de barm con una variedad de rellenos barms seco sin untar en la parte superior. 3 donuts mermelada y manzana wernt tan bueno como Morrisons mermelada era más barato posible sin sabor. Apple estaba rellenando pastel. El té y el café era tibio, por decir lo menos.

Got an almond ring at this deli and have to say disappointed as I couldn’t taste any almonds as for staff, when they asked us do we need any help? we said just browsing at present which seems to have brought on some kind of snigger-now I’m not sure if it was the Irish accent or wat and. maybe it was harmless but it was off putting-and not nice-won’t be back

We recently used Barbakan to cater for our office Christmas party and were really happy with how it went. Misha was so helpful and communicative with helping us to organise what we needed and all the food was delicious. There was a great selection of cheeses and charcuterie, the salads were well made, the homemade cakes and mince pies excellent and everything was beautifully fresh. It was also very plentiful! I would definitely recommend them :)

I pop in Barbakan most Fridays to pick up stuff for lunch and stuff for my mum too. Always a great atmosphere, lovely friendly staff and great food on offer. Probably the best beigels and tomato bread I've ever tasted.

Outstanding service and PROPER cold meats which are FAR cheaper than Tesco or Sainsbury's or Waitrose. An AMAZING selection of traditionally baked goods that are fresh each day. This place is wonderful. A great asset to South Manchester. Get some cash. Support a local business that employes local people and provides an authentic and superior service.

I ordered uber eats. Food was fantastic. They rang me to tell me that they run out the sandwich i ordered and if i wanted to change it in a very polite way. It wasnt a problem for me, and they gift me 2 croissants. Brilliant

Delicious food products and affordable fresh bread

A Chorlton institution with a great variety of high quality foodstuffs especially breads. Always queues but plenty of staff serving.

This place offers wide variety but fails in quality. I was just so disappointed. From stale croissants, and doughnuts, through green tomatoes on sandwiches, overbaked baguettes (a baguette is not meant to stab your gums with hard crust), to inaccurate cheesecake. Y'all, Polish cheesecake is not made with this kind of cheese (the cheese is ground thrice and the sour flavour comes from sour cream, not from american style soft cheese), topping is meant to be plain or thin and delicate instead of overbaked crust (e.g. a thin layer of jelly). The quality of this place is simply lacking, the price is grossly high, the service is rude ladies that do not know how to communicate with customers politely (actually annoyed that I made a big order?! And that i had to pack it in my bag before moving across the whole shop to pay?!)

Great Delicatessen, lots of fresh delicious breads, sweets and accompaniments. Perfect for a drop in breakfast or lunch. A must visit when you’re in the area

My friend and I enjoyed a little browse of the shop as well as a breakfast pastry from the counter- the pecan one I chose was nice and sweet!

Great selection, but very confusing why there isn't any form of ticketing queueing system. They have a ticket system for the sandwiches when you order. So why not have it for People? Similar to traditional butchers. Queues are a free for all. Feels like you are at a bar instead of a bakery. Even when its not busy, it is awkward to get served. As They all seem to be busy.

I have shopped regularly at the Barbakan for years. It has its own bakery and an extensive range of breads cooked to Polish, French, German, Greek and Uk recipes. The pastry counter is equally varied. For lunch there are hot ciabatta based sandwiches for both vegitarians and meat eaters. There is also an extensive deli counter with a range of meats, salads, olives etc.

Generally very goodand reasonably priced

If you haven't been, you need to go... SERIOUSLY. The local(ISH) honey is amazing, and if you eat meat the sausage Saturdays are worth the queue. The freshly homemade olive ciabatta is delicious. So is the chocolate bread (but you have to order that now). The drink and juice selection is a "yea please", even more so with the new addition of some Turmeric shots.

Part of my weekly shop, very good cheese and deli meats.

It's a 60 mile trip for my daughter and I to go here. It's worth it. I always order and buy 10 loaves of protein bread. It is a wholegrain bread with seeds and does not affect my blood sugar at all and I can't get it anywhere else. I have a slice every morning with egg.

Barbakan is an amazing space, it's like many corners of Europe and so much variety to bring your heart and mind such joy, sharing food and the love it brings is excellent. Barbakan has all the ingredients for that everyday use and special meals too. Great staff with excellent advice and product knowledge.

Great variety of products, I love this place the staff is super friendly and helpful, donuts were super tasty and the bacon and egg sandwich was delicious, we will be coming back for sure!

This Deli has such a place in Chorlton - the Onion Bagels, Freshly Baked Breads, Bacon & Egg Barms and Mediterranean sides and Meats are delightful. Prepare for a long interaction when paying but the staff are nice so I hardly mind.

Exceptional! Ordered the Reuben sandwich (with extra onions and extra cheese) and was not disappointed. The bread was as fresh as it can be, nice crunch to the crust, the fillings equally delightful. Such a treat on a rainy day. Fair price and good size. The smoked salmon bagel on an onion bagel very good as well – everything fresh, full of flavour, nicely and neatly put together and packaged. Highly, highly recommend!

It does seem small but paying an extra 15 for having it sliced when it used to be free seems like a proper kick in the bread basket! When I first came to chorlton this place was an institution really homely and a lovely part of the community but there little changes are really sad and the atmosphere seems to have gone more tense, real shame. breads still nice apart from the tuscana which has gone down hill. And the tori touches may get me to bake my own

Great if you feel like waiting over 20 minutes for a sandwich even when it's not busy

It was the Friday before Christmas I enjoyed my drink but it was so busy to get another drink we would have had to queue for another hour. So maybe they could invest in some table service staff for exceptionally busy times.

I buy my Polish bread here which is very good however the poppy seed cakes taste like dry sweet buns - year by year less poppy seeds - can’t taste them at all !!!

The array of bread on offer is second to none. The sandwiches and melts are delicious. They also do fantastic salads and patisseries. Add to that the meat and cheese counter and all the different pastas and the hot dog stand. The staff are both knowledgeable and highly courteous. This long standing business is truly one of the great jewels in Chorlton's crown. Well worth a visit!

A Chorlton institution and for a good reason!! 10/10 in every department, from the amazing selection of cheese and cured meats, the better than Gregg's pasties, too much good bread, unbelievable sweets and pastries! Sugared ring donut is my favourite, but anything you get is great!

food is great n affordable but tall blonde curly haired guy with moustache making the sandwiches keeps scratching his nose with his fingers every minute then proceeding to pick up bread and make sandwiches without hand washing

Fabulous food and excellent service

Great sevice from freindly staff and amazing fresh baked produce. The only problem I had with my visit was finding somewhere to park . the horrendous ongoing roadworks are a nightmare and don't look like the work will be finished soon. It must be having a huge impact on the small business. People of chorlton must be so fed up with it. I parked in the tesco garage nearby risking a fine so had to be quick.

The Barbakan is a wonder bakery/deli full of many delights plus at the same time amusing and annoying. Warning to vegetarians and vegans....you have to queue which isn't a problem but you will be waiting next to a monster sausage barbecue right by the door, then once you get inside all of the delicious breads are clearly visible giving you lots of time to make a decision. However there will always be a number of people in front of you being served that have no clue as to what they want even though they have had an age to decide whilst waiting. Always worth a visit.

Cakes were a miss. But the salad was good. I think I will stick to Didsbury for the artisan cakes.

I chose their hot meat loaf sandwich which I found tasty however it's hard to justify the price of £5.80, I couldn't even taste the meat loaf as the slice is quite thin which looks like just a slice of ham. They have a good selection of olives, breads and meats.

They have no respect… making false promises to the employees. Promising a job then say its a trail after waiting 5 weeks to start. Then get paid £40 for 5 and 1/2 hrs work, insult…..

Brought back fantastic memories and didn't disappoint with fantastic food.

Really nice deli, lots of fresh cakes, biscuits, pastries. Nice salad selection and coffee is good too. Has ample seating under outdoor roof. Good customer service too

On paper, a winner. In reality, just a bit underwhelming. To be fair the pan cooked sausages and other stuff looked great on the way into the main shop. But we had lunch planned elsewhere. The goods in the shop are OK. Curated from Italian and Polish wholesalers and marked up a little steeply. We queued at the deli meat counter for 6-7 mins while the guy in front was being served. Only to be told we should have queued a different way. Fair enough - no signs or anyone telling you this. Also, apart from the guy in front there wasn’t a queue when we first started waiting. Bad attitude and unfriendly vibes so, we put our stuff back on the shelf and went for lunch.

Went there especially one Saturday, using two separate buses to try the food. Was disappointing. Heard good things. Threw most of it away. Doubt I'd go back.

People travel miles to come here me from Yorkshire (I'm on a nostalgia fest, I used to come here in the 1950's through 1970's when I lived locally). Polish and Italian food and drinks, I note there is now an outside seating area for hot drinks and eats, plus a BBQ area. I bought a selection of Salads; Nutty Ham and Polish Sausage for friends (I'm a veggie) and Poppy Seed Cakes to take back with me, all yum (carnie friends loved the meat). Accessibility: Ramp to the right, then level. Car Parking: On street, however, there are extensive road works for installing cycle lanes. I was however able to park on a side street. Bus: Chorlton Library stop very close. Staff: Very friendly and helpful. The store was quite busy, but I did not have to wait too long to be served! Definitely worth a visit!

Everything here is always delicious and amazing, the service is excellent, you can never go wrong with something from the Barbican 😋

Beautiful food. This shop has exceeded its self the staff are fantastic the food is out of this world so much so I've treated 3 friends too from the Barbakan. Its so fabulous I really don't want to tell anyone about it because they'll be more queues lol. I love this place. You can have hot polish sausage & many more, they also do all sorts of bread, cakes & doughnuts (ohhhh amazing), cheesecake, cookies, meat & so many other things to many to mention but I would guarantee once you've been there you will be addicted. Hope you'll love it as much as I do. I don't eat ham ever but omg!!, when I go here I love the Hot Club Ciabatta 🥪 Fantastic. Love this place so much I was there for 8am this morning 😄

We ordered for a party and the whole experience was great. The food, the service and the presentation were all excellent.

A fantastic deli with everything you could ever dream of. Really nice toasted sandwiches and good coffee. Incredibly busy yet friendly staff. Good atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again to try some pastries and sliced meats. Parking is a bit hectic due to all the roadworks, so I would suggest taking the tram/ bus etc.
