Bar 44 in The Vale of Glamorgan

Awfully disappointing. So sad to say that. Been coming here for over 10 years. Food is ok but service is such a disappointment. Used to be amazing however this afternoon I was made to feel (as a woman dining alone and taking up a whole table) like an inconvenience. I was acknowledged after a couple were served before me despite being there for five minutes. Drinks left on the bar, I was tempted to serve myself, food “placed” on the table, no check back and no interaction whatsoever. Apart from a slightly begrudging “was everything ok?” when I declined to pay the discretionary 10% service charge. Staff more concerned with themselves then the customers - echoed in others reviews - hence lack of service charge. Won’t be back.

Have always enjoyed coming here but tonight was sadly very underwhelming. The staff are nice but the standard of service has dropped dramatically. This seems to have coincided with the departure of the lovely manager was in charge over the last couple of years. The staff are very young and appear to have had no training in how to deliver great customer service. No one seemed to be in overall charge and they were more interested in chatting with each other instead of checking on customers. At no point during our meal did anyone check to see everything was ok. At one point during our visit 2 staff members were rolling cigarettes at a table at the bar! They may well have finished shift or been on a break but this to me is inappropriate. The food was ok, patatas bravas were however very crunchy and overcooked. As much as I want to support local businesses I don’t think I’ll return.

We were very disappointed by the tiny portion sizes, none of us in the group have big appetites but found the portions very small, not particularly well cooked (patatas bravas were hard) and the prices far too high, comparing poorly with other restaurants nearby serving similar food. A bottle of house white was £29, definitely nothing like Spain. There was a long wait for food and it came randomly, one person having all three tapas at once and the others over a period of time. One person's starter came with the main course. It was also incredibly noisy and we struggled to hold a conversation. Overall a very disappointing experience.

We were not overly impressed, the food was ok but not as good as on previous visits. No fault of the waiting staff but service was slow. I waited over 20 minutes after my wife had received her drink before mine arrived, this only after I went to the bar myself. Overall expensive for what it was. Management issues need addressing.

We visited at lunchtime and took advantage of the lunch offer - a drink and 3 tapas for £20. Plenty of choice and generous portions. I had the pane con tomato, the tortilla and the fish of the days. Others had a salad, the croquetas and the pork and duck mini burger. We shared three different ice creams - olive oil and thyme, salted almond and chocolate. Nice atmosphere. We really enjoyed it.

Great flavour in the food, the taste of spain is great here. I will be returning here for another night the one is cardiff is great also so both venues are amazing to eat at

It was very difficult to appreciate the food once the loud, banging dance tunes started, which was completely inappropriate for the setting. We have eaten here many times before but the quality of the food was average. Overall it was a disappointing experience and we are unlikely to return. Such a shame.

Having been a few times before I feel I need to write as this bar hasn’t lived up to the hype and reputation that is around the area. We were sat at a sticky table and had to chase the service who clearly was not interested in putting our order through. There were mistakes in the ordering and the prawns on one of the dishes were mushy and not nice. When paying that level of prices for food, you would expect better. Atmosphere is noisy and hard to hear your companions speak. Sorry Bar 44, there are now better places to eat in the area and we won’t be visiting again.

We eat out very regularly, and we would say this was one of the best meals we have had this year. We were here on a sunny Saturday evening, and the place felt really lovely with the front all opened up. Staff were amazing, and the service was excellent. The tapas menu was varied, with plenty of choice for all. Every single dish we had was lovely. It feels very genuine, and would not be out of place in any good tapas bar in Spain. We have not been here for several years and left wondering why we had left it so long. Wine was pretty good too. We will definitely be back

Well this was an unexpected gem of a place. The food was great but was made amazing by the service. Watching the efforts of the kitchen and service staff was a treat but the exceptional service of Chris (deputy manager) made our evening. Thank you all for a lovely evening. We will be back!!

Great friendly welcome from Chris, our server. Good atmosphere, some perfect soul music in the background. The wine selection is excellent and the tapas was some of the best we've had, and all at a decent price. We'll be back.

Whilst the food was very good the cost of a large house red wine £10 which then has a 10% service charge makes it the dearest in Penarth.Don’t know of any other eateries in the area that put on this service charge it should be the customers choice what to tip.

Excellent lunch, and definitely the best we’ve had here. Difficult to find fault in any of the dishes we chose, although the chicken and charcuterie were stand outs. We’ve always loved Bar 44 but they’ve certainly upped their game.

I’m notoriously fussy and a food snob, but, Absolutely love Bar 44 and we’re desperate to go back! The quality of produce is 1st class. All dishes are always perfectly executed and absolutely delicious. Mouth watering poached Chorizo and fresh fish dishes are effortlessly stunning. In Fact every dish we’ve sampled (and we’ve had them all) have been sublime. I love the vibe of the restaurant, the staff are faultless and the cocktails are devine - I highly recommend the Rhubarb and custard pornstars - oh wow!! Addictive though so be warned! We’re very much looking forward to booking as soon as possible.

I am Spanish and my partner never had tapas so I suggested Bar 44 as we were visiting Penarth... Disappointing is un understatement! Food was cold, presentation was awful..ordered boquerones( fried fishes) and we were served 2 canned sardines cut longways put on a plate full of oil ..I was shocked ,sent it back to the kitchen and staff was so rude didn't even say goodbye when we left .We will not return,as food is overpriced and disappointing.

I can't believe how extremely poor this place has become from when it first opened many years ago to now. I used to be a regular at this establishment when it first opened , the Beer and Staff were great and the food was exceptional . But gradually over the years they have squeezed more money out of the customer, beer and food prices shot up and food portions got smaller. We stopped going here a few years ago, not that I can't afford to go here , but out of principle,and there are now better places to eat and drink in Penarth,that may not be cheap but you don't feel ripped off, and who actually care about your custom.My daughter wanted her birthday meal in Bar 44 Penarth this month , so off we went.All I can say is that this place is awfully expensive and the food is a joke , you can pay between about £5 to £9 even up to £11 ( mostly around £7 ) for a tapas that is so tiny it's laughable, seriously bland in taste and unless you order a lot you will leave hungry . The salt cod was £9 ,tiny and bland , the tiny chorizo at £6.70 tasted like Frankfurter , the flat iron steak was tiny and at £8.50 was not even elevated in flavour to justify the price . I don't mind paying for quality but I don't want to be ripped off . Avoid this place, it cares only about making money and not the customer .And take note only of the 2 star reviews because they Truly reflex this establishment .

Our daughters bought us vouchers for Christmas which we used last night.Initially we were shown to a window bar seating area but after saying we needed a table our request was granted and we were allocated a table at the rear which was pleasant.COVID-19 procedures were satisfactory with hand sanitiser on arrival and all staff wearing visors - the tables were sufficiently far apart to be compliant too.My wife is GF and there was plenty of choice and we enjoyed all the dishes we selected. I finished off with the steak which I enjoyed.We’d definitely go again as the whole experience is worth repeating.

It was a busy lunch period & our second visit of the week this time we had wine but never again I think £10.80 a glass for a wine we had no list or choice was the most expensive in the town.

I took my daughter out for her last decent meal before starting Uni! Well it wasn't just decent it was outstanding. The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. Everything has been done to ensure a safe trip with QR menu, visors and gel. No problems with a shortage of food items (altho we were there at 5.30pm... what a great time to eat!)The food was fabulous... our favourite was the tuna tartare closely followed by the artichoke, beetroot/goats curd and croquettesI live in Bristol and I will be returning with friends as the food was outstanding. Having had lunch with Pasta Loco on the Down's in Bristol the day before, this was a match for food quality ... (my first meals now since lockdown... i have been truly spoilt!)Thank you Bar 44 for making our meal so memorable.

Family of four adults - ate here a week or so ago a couple of days after they reopened, and whilst they were still doing the eat out to help out scheme. Staff were all well trained and applying relevant Covid precautions. Apart from looking at the menu via our mobile devices, and staff wearing visors, it was a relatively normal experience, and the staff Worked hard to make it so.The food was excellent - as it was the previous times we have been here, with a few new interesting menu choices. The duck burgers were selling sell, and were delicious. A couple of our tapas orders went astray and had to be chased up, but it’s supposed to be a leisurely experience, so we weren’t worried about that. My wife and daughter also had some great new cocktails, whilst my son and I stuck to beer. All in all a very pleasant meal out, made more so by the lovely food, friendly and helpful staff (not to mention the discount from the eat out scheme!)We like Bar 44 and will definitely visit here again.

We were delighted to be able to booked in for the first day of Bar44 Penarth's reopening and were thrilled to be the first to use the newly refurbished "garden room". A lovely spacious, light airy area. As ever the food was excellent and the service first class. We also felt very safe as socially distancing and the safety of everyone had obviously been taking extremely seriously. The meal was available though a QR code and this was very easy to use. Thank you all your hard work its very appreciated.

First off - service: excellent! Secondly, food: excellent! Finally, atmosphere - awful!You know what it is like when you have booked into a lovely 17th. century hotel, all oak beams and plush carpets in reception. Then, you are led through the hotel, along a corridor into the modern extension at the back. That is what our Bar 44 experience was like. Through the main restaurant area, past the kitchens, through all that buzz and chatter and vibrancy to be seated at a table next to the toilet entrance in a room with all the atmosphere of a dentist's waiting room, with more empty table than occupied. Sterile and lifeless.If you book, insist on a table in the front section. Really, really disappointing.

This was my first time visiting Bar 44 Penarth, usually i visit my local Bar 44 in cowbridge or Bar 44 Westgate St before nights out. It was only the second night it was reopen which means there are going to be some teething issues but it felt like a lot of problems and the biggest seemed to be the general attitude. There were around 5 times on the new menu that were unavailable at the time of our visit, this list grew as the evening went on and we went to order more, it wasn’t only food items either, some wine I tried to order was also unavailable. Some of these items were olives, the duck burger, the aubergine dish, chorizo, we were also told they were out of sourdough bread, then we were told by another server that they no longer had this on the menu. The food was nice but it was not to the level that I usually experience in the other Bar 44’s I regularly visited before lockdown, which was very disappointing after all this time waiting for it to reopen. The worst part of the visit was the way the staff dealt with everything. To be told items were available when they no longer have them on the menu, to be told in passing about the growing list of unavailable items on the menu, the staff being unsure of the menu in general when questioned, especially the vegan menu. We ordered a number of items from the menu, a few rounds of drinks, then when looking to order more food we were put on hold whilst the server checked the kitchen was open, he told us it was but this would be the last order but that desserts would be fine to order later. We ordered some more food as to not go hungry with the kitchen closing, then when we wanted to order desserts afterwards we were told it wasn’t possible as the kitchen was closed and the staff were finished and gone. We then asked the waiter if we could order another bottle of wine as we had 30 minutes until the taxi would arrive, we were not the only ones left in the restaurant and we hadn’t paid yet, to be told that the bar was closed and we could not have any more drinks at all except water. The wait staff as a whole made the entire evening a let down. It’s understandable that there may be some teething problems whilst getting back to the swing of it but it just appeared that the staffs attitude was uninterested and uncaring. It should be made clear to tables that the kitchen is closing at a certain time if they want any final orders, it should also be made clear that this includes any desserts. The same goes for the bar and drinks, if the bar is closing then the tables should be given a final offer to order more drinks before it does. I will return to Bar 44 as the food is usually exceptional and the service very good, I will put this down to a one off but if this becomes the new norm in these restaurants then I won’t be returning for long.

Spent a pleasant few hours sampling the tapas menu and a few beers. Plates were all very tasty. Tuna, prawns (2), beetroot and goats cheese, chorizo, croquettes with ham, patatas bravas, hake. All were excellent and portions were reasonable. Superb. Friendly and helpful service also helped. Kitchen shut at 3pm before reopening at 4.30 so maybe 2pm is last time to sit down for afternoon session.

The food was good with an interesting variety on offer, if a little pricey. Options for gluten free. Knowledgeable staff, who took the trouble to explain ingredients, and to communicate with the chef any food intolerances. Makes being gf not so bad! Diolch Bar 44, we will return.

The food here is consistently good, front of house service varies. I’d booked a table for two but when my friend and I arrived there was no one to greet us or show us to our table. Luckily, the friendly barman came to our rescue so that we weren’t left standing around like a pair of lemons (pardon the pun). We shared some patatas bravas, both had the crispy hake and then ordered padron peppers and an apple and pomegranate salad as sides. We then shared a heavenly crema Catalan, one of the most delicious puds I’ve ever tasted.

Great place to visit on the weekends come here a lot on a Friday night after work. Very good vibe and friendly

My first time at Bar 44 and I wasn’t disappointed. Very busy when we arrived but were quickly greeted and found a space at the bar whilst we waited for our table. There was an excellent selection of cocktails as well as beer/ larger. After our drink at the bar we were seated at the table for food and again the selection was great. We ordered a number of dishes all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. We worked our way through many of the gin based cocktails before we left which we really enjoyed. The atmosphere was great and the only down side to the entire evening was a group of drunk blokes knocking into the wife at the bar who had clearly been out all day for the rugby. Overall a great night and a place we will definitely head back to soon.

The food is always delicious and has a great atmosphere. You have an opportunity to try all different kind of foods. I can't wait to go again!

Visited with friends who live not too far away. Nothing like this where we live unfortunately. The food was excellent, the service great and the staff attentive but not over bearing. Would love a return visit.

I have visited the restaurant a few times over the years and I still come away with the same hungry feeling every time. The food is somewhat sparse and small portioned and as a dining experience I would say slightly pretentious. The bar area and drinks are very good and the place has a great buzz. It’s a real shame that the food has let down what would have been a great night out.

Went there for the first time. Busy little place. We had different tapas dishes which we asked the chef to decide half of them based on his recommendation. Was not disappointed and will be back some time.

Ordered takeaway food. Good range of tapas and appreciate having a specific vegan menu. Always makes life easier. Reasonable price. The food was nice. But...and I didn't really realise how strange this was until we actually sat down to eat the food at home. They asked us to sign a disclaimer to say they were not liable if the food made us ill. Can't really wrap my head around the manager or chef's thought process. If you are uncomfortable preparing takeaway food then perhaps don't do takeaway!? Because asking customers to sign a wholly ineffectual disclaimer in the event your food makes them ill kind of sends the wrong message don't you think? Deducted one point for creating mild concern that took away from the pleasure of the meal. Seems fair.

Visited with my wife for a special evening out. Menu has plenty of variety. Food is presented very well and staff friendly. Prices are what you would expect to pay in Penarth. Would definitely visit here again.

The food was just awful and extremely expensive as someone who does not eat convenience food and makes their own bread at home....I cannot understand why people go to these places ie..bread dipped in olive oil.slimely mushrooms..approx £7 ...cost next to nothing..what a profit they make.. when people want to celebrate their birthdays ! Bar 44 never disappoints - always a warm welcome, great tapas, a real buzz and good service. Croquettas are a favourite but don't miss the ensalata - and patatas bravas are the best you'll find anywhere.

Tasty food, certainly not cheap , especially the wine , took advantage of the 2 courses for £8 each ...(checked bill after leaving , to find was overcharged by £1) but, again, the food was well cooked and great presentation ...service was good and friendly ..bar was very quiet in the mid afternoon

Been here a number of times and always had a good time. Always clean and tidy and the staff are always friendly and accommodating. Have eaten here in the past and always have a nice meal. Definitely somewhere to head to in Penarth.

As it’s only a decent place at the centre of Penarth, I would not say I’d go there again, however- fails on every tick.

My daughter has been going on about the Sunday roast at Bar 44 for ages. Finally went there today and it was fabulous. The meal was a Sunday lunch with a Spanish twist - a shared platter of roast beef (cooked) with chorizo Yorkshire pudding (gorgeous), cauliflower with Manchego cheese (yummy), hispi cabbage (scrumptious), chard (fab) and a bowl of beautifully roast potatoes all topped with a delicious gravy. There was plenty of everything all cooked to perfection. The service was attentive but never invasive.

Popped in for a quick beer and ended up eating too. Super service! Nick, General Manager, was our host. Credit to Bar 44. Will definitely be back.

Tapas is delicious, and the portions are super generous. Highly recommend the hake. Great lunch time deal too!

We went to Bar 44 on Mon 19 Aug and Luke quickly showed us to a quiet table at the back. We ordered wine and almonds which came quick as a flash and were very good. Then we ordered 3 tapas each and they arrived soon which was great as we were famished. Generally, it was all very good - the service was excellent. The goat's cheese was very good - served with an orange slice. The chorizo was very good - lightly fried. The chicken was good - fried and sliced. The salt cod fritters were more like potato cakes with just a hint of fish - they were not frittes by any stretch of the imagination. The calamari were absolutly hopeless - they did not look like calamari and they did not taste like calamari. Luke kindly removed that dish from our bill. The Bravas were very good. It did seem that most dishes had been fried - which was a pity - perhaps be chose badly. So all in all a mixed selection of tapas in taste and quality. But Luke and the waitress were great and we had a good time.

Booked to eat here last night for my boyfriends birthday. Two glasses of Cava were organised to be at our table ready for our arrival which was lovely! The food was the best tapas we’ve ever had and we are lovers of tapas dishes!! It was so hard to cut down our options as we wanted to try everything. I didn’t catch the waiters name but he was very accommodating for my nut allergy, offering suggestions and alterations to any dish I wanted to try which I appreciated loads. I have already told others that they have to come here! Thank you for a great experience! :)

I was in Penarth visiting friends who had recommended eating at Bar Forty-Four. The experience was good, we had reserved a table for four near the front of the restaurant and ordered a bottle of Cava before ordering the Meat and cheese selection plates, Chicken, Bread and oil, Salad, Tortilla, Patatas Bravas, Cockles, Mushrooms. That was then followed by two Truffle deserts with sherry.

Visited here for tapas and a bottle of wine with a friend. The food was lovely and the staff were very nice. Would recommend

There's a great range of tapas, including a few specials which are always worth a try, along with an impressive drinks menu. Allergies are not a problem, let them know in advance and they go above and beyond to cater for your needs. Above all the service is first class (the best), the team are on it - Dan is especially great, he always seems to have time for you even when it's completely packed.

My lover and I are both partial to the rear end and were promptly seated in an intimate corner of the restaurant. My heart was aflame as we exchanged glances across the menu. His expressive eyebrows delighted over the daily specials. And special they were! Every mouthful was like an explosion of flavour. Salty, Sweet and Sour all sparkled with their personalities yet harmonised beautifully. I felt that my appetite was quite replete. However, my lover always ensures I am well provided for and giveth in abundance. He sat casually, his resplendent knees brushed against mine as he ordered the house chocolate truffles and a second sangria for dessert. My cup did runneth over! Needless to say we both left this establishment very satisfied.

Lovely place (premises, decoration), good quality wine and food, however, the staff isn't necessirily helpful enough, smiles and transparency can go a long way with customers; prices aren't advertised properly. We found some members of staff acting petty for no reasons at all. Overall disappointing experience - Given the amount of money spent there, customers should expect a 5-star customer service experience: Bar 44 waiters/tresses can still do much better!

A relatively quiet mid-week lunchtime. Friendly service and a nice atmosphere none the less. All six dishes were good but some were not generously portioned for the price. For example, I would have thought that five anchovy fillets for £6 was a bit steep. The wine was good having opted for a whie Rioja. The bill for the three of us with tip came to £90 but we did go for a second bottle.

Was part of a large group for Sunday lunch. Great food, Spanish style so little different to our UK style of Sunday lunch but very good. Drinks and wine are always great here. Attentive service. Nice leisurely afternoon.

Went there with my Wife and Son, place was not that busy, I ordered 7 to 8 tapas and the service was quick and food was brilliant. I really recommend!!

Good crab toast, cheese and chutney toast and croquetas. The ham was ok but not amazing - not aged enough.

This isnt the first visit to Barr 44 in penarth, however this occasion made me really want to leave a review. Wonderful resturant for a more casual birthday meal. Wonderful selection of Tapas, great drinks and very good service! I would highly recommend eating here!

Visited for the first time with my friend, the waitress was very friendly and helpful guiding us through the menu. We both ordered one of their gin and tonics, both really nice! Theres loads of tapas to choose from we were spoilt for choice. Highly recommend the chorizo and the g&t; with orange and cinnamon! All the staff make you feel really at home, excited to visit again and try the rest of the menu
