Awful customer service. Don't book in advance. We booked in advance and have the phone log to show our booking phone call. When we arrived a few days later the restaurant was shut. When we rang their other restaurant we were told they have gone bust and it won't be open anymore and so they didn't care we had got dressed up and travelled through for our meal. In fact she actually laughed at our disappointment. We later learned that it had happened to others also. They take your booking and then don't bother opening. we used to go all the time under the previous owners. Not anymore!!

We had read good reviews so visited this restaurant last night with 7 friends during a long weekend in the Lake District. We ordered our food, with the starters arriving pretty quickly. Despite me asking for a particular bottle of wine several times and even resorting to pointing at the menu, the wrong (more expensive) bottle of wine was delivered and a look of blank incomprehension given when we asked for the correct bottle. The starters were eaten pretty quickly and we sat back, looking forward to our main courses as the restaurant slowly got busier. After 90 minutes no further food had been delivered to the table or updates given with other empty looking tables around us also starting to enquiry about when food may appear. After finally managing to attract the attention of the single waitress working, we were told that the chef hadn't even started cooking our food yet as she was 'delayed' due to us ordering starters. We decided not to bother and left after paying for the wrong wine and long forgotten starters. The Chinese takeaway down the street offered great quality food, at half the price and in just 15 minutes.

Came across this bistro after arriving late in Penrith. Although the bistro was about to close they stayed open just to accommodate myself & my partner & I'm so glad they did. We had the sharing chicken platter for starter & I couldn't fault it; delicious & the satay sauce was the best I'd ever tasted. Had pad Thai for main & it was beautiful. Thought the food was reasonably priced, especially for the high quality. The staff were friendly & very pleasant. Compliments to the chef...keep up the good work. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

We had a great time! Ordered a green curry and the jungle curry with steamed jasmine rice, both were fresh and nice and spicy! Plus we had the papaya salda that knocked our socks off! Order of you like spice. We love Thai food because of all the Vegan options. We will be heading back!

I recently moved near to Penrith and to celebrate we ordered a take away from Bangkok Bistro. The place was not busy but we were still given the wrong takeaway (and only realised when we got home). I drove back to the shop to return it and collect our own and when I arrived ours was sat on the counter getting cold. By the time we ate it was stone cold (no microwave yet in our new house) and to top it off we were still missing one of our orders (which we had paid for). Throughout the process the service was frosty and I was made to feel that the mistakes were my fault. Altogether a terrible shame which spoilt what was supposed to be a celebration evening. All the more frustrating as the food was actually pretty decent.

I will start by saying the food is excellent, but they need to get their act together. My experience tonight has been the same every time I have ordered a takeaway. They tell me a figure such as 20 mins, half hour etc. for it will be ready, it has never been ready, last time I had to wait an additional 25 mins. Tonight it wasn't ready again, I asked how long it would be as my daughter was having a takeaway from another place and we had arranged it around the time they gave us. All they could say was she hadn't started one of the dishes yet. It wasn't because it was busy as last time there was a party of four and then a party of two came in after me, tonight it was empty. So I ended up leaving it. They need to give realistic times or sort out their service. I will not be going back as it's just too unreliable, which is a shame as the food is great, I shall just have to use the other option in town.

We had a takeaway, it took my husband ages to pay as no one seemed to know what they were doing. Got it home and the ribs were burnt and not a little bit but totally cremated. So we rang them and they said we could have free ribs next time..... not a chance, for 20 pounds I expected a lot more- much better thai's in penrith. 4 prawns in the Pad Thai. the Massuman curry was quite tasty but that was the only good part.

Saw the great reviews on here and decided to have our anniversary meal at Bangkok Bistro. Big disappointment. As soon as we walked in and said "hi", only to be met with a surly look from a disgruntled teenager in a totally empty restaurant, we knew we had chosen the wrong place. It didn't get any better from there. Service was bordering on rude - we were lucky to get a grunt out of the young girl who obviously didn't want to be there and was probably covering for someone else. Ordered a main each, and after 15-20 minutes one arrived, followed by another 15 minute wait before the other did. Not really what you hope for on a romantic dinner! They were out of juice so ended up having tap water. Atmosphere was non-existent; at one point the music abruptly stopped for about ten minutes and the restaurant was totally silent other than us (no one else was in there). Waitress was mostly absent and the manager, who was pleasant and friendly, didn't appear until we were leaving. There was no apology for the fact that the meal was delayed and there was a mix up with what we ordered from the menu. Two stars because the food was actually tasty and the restaurant itself clean and pleasant, if totally dead and unwelcoming. We wouldn't mind the poor service if it had been busy, but we were the only diners in there. A couple of poor souls came to collect their takeaways and were forced to endure the morgue-like atmosphere with us for a good 10-15 minutes. We couldn't help laughing! We don't like leaving bad reviews and clearly we came at a bad time (?!) but seriously - terrible vibes.

We visited Bangkok bistro on Friday evening. The manager was incredibly welcoming and nothing was too much trouble all evening. He made sure everyone in our party was catered for and was able to make recommendations about his menu! The food was high quality, reasonably priced and delicious! Being someone who loves Thai food I was looking forward to eating here. I was however somewhat disappointed. To start with the prawn crackers were stale & then we saw that most of the dishes contained peppers. As far as I'm aware in Thailand peppers are not used. The dishes were cooked very well yet it was a shame some of the ingredients were not better quality. This is a bistro so don't expect a restaurant atmosphere although some heating wouldn't have gone amiss. The chairs did have cushions so there was a little comfort. The owner did his best to make small talk with us & was very attentive. If you've not had Thai food before then this is a good place to try for your first time.

Food was superb! The Scottish owner was really friendly (even though he was over run with diners) and even took the time out to tell us about his family life (we enquired). Its his wife who does all the cooking upstairs and she learnt to cook off her mother. I had vegetable Thai green curry and my husband had Massaman curry and we ordered a selection of starters to share which were all great! The décor is all out of whack and it could definitely do with a spruce up - but if you want good food and that doesn't bother you then worry not! The décor does not concentrate on Thai things. There are things from all over the world in there which makes it a bit confusing. I think it used to be an Italian (that was our guess) so some of the décor they have kept whilst adding some of their own - with Ney York sky line photos in background? Ha ha you've got to laugh really.

Ordered a Jungle Curry to takeaway. Beware - this is not curry. It can only be described as a tasteless soup of crunchy vegetables. The soup has a water like consistency, unlike curry which generally had a thick consistency. Yes there are some chilli spices in it, but it tastes very bland. Perhaps they should update the menu to ensure customers are aware of exactly what this horrible dish is.When I phoned the restaurant to confirm that they had given me the right meal I was told that if I wanted curry then I should have ordered the Panang.Perhaps they should move this dish out of the curry section of their menu.

I already have a good thai restaurant in my local town but this one exceeded expectations and I truly am a fuss pot when it comes to eating out. A table of 4 adults and one child, we ate vegetarian platters to start with - cooked perfectly, no grease on any of the deep fried items. Mains consisted of yellow curry with chicken, pineapple curry with chicken, peanut curry again with chicken and pad thai with tofu plus rice etc. Plenty of meat and nice cuts. 2 of the party had fritters to finish and presentation was fantastic with all aspects of the meal. With drinks the bill was around £60 - amazing value for what we had. The guy who served us gave my daughter lots of lollies and sweets on the way out, he was so sweet. This is quite a large restaurant and it was about half full when we visited. Calor gas heaters (although not on) in the middle of the restaurant dotted between tables didn't do much for first impressions. One charismatic male waiter seemed to be looking after everybody with some help from a waitress who spent quite a bit of time in and out of the kitchen. Our starters took an age to come and overall there seemed to be very little food coming out of the kitchen full stop. When the starters eventually arrived my wife said hers was luke warm and disappointing - mine was okay. After some significant further delay the main courses were much better - I'd go as far as to say that the jungle curry was excellent. The waiter was very friendly and courteous but unfortunately by the time it came for us to leave I'd simply lost my enthusiasm. The place just doesn't have the ambience for long periods of sitting waiting, so it was a rather frustrating evening.I don't know if they were short staffed that night or if it is always like this, but being honest I doubt I would return to find out.

I have never been to Thailand so I cannot validate any restaurant's claim that it is serving "authentic Thai food". However one thing I can say is that the curries served here are unlike those served in other Thai restaurants I have been too. The sauces do not seem to be be built around coconut milk. It honestly seemed as though baby formula had been used instead. While the "meat" in both the satays and the curries came with an unnaturally soft form and did not really taste as though it was duck or chicken. I think I would have been more satisfied by the chip shop around the corner.

Housed in a shop unit down an arcade alley just off main drag out of town our first impressions were a bit hesitant as it was well, bare inside. But the welcome was warm and the service lovely. The food was delicious and we had no complaints although I did hear the next door table mention they couldn't taste the garlic in their dish to be told that wild garlic is not as strong tasting as normal garlic... Biggest problem was the rather barn like interior with nothing to break it up and the lack of soft furnishings made for a harsh acoustic. But it was all about the food for us and that was perfectly fine.

On Sunday 12 October 2014 it was our Ruby Wedding anniversary and we decided to stay in Penrith. We decided to try the Bangkok Bistro and we were not disappointed. The daughter met us at the door with the usual Thai greeting and we were shown to a table. Being Sunday it was very quiet but soon it started to get busy. We ordered Thai fish cakes and Tom Yum soup. Both were delicious and just as we remembered on a recent visit to Thailand. Our main course arrived and look and tasted great. One only comment was it showed 2chillies at the side of the red curry. This was not nearly hot enough for us but the young lady said most people find it ok. She did offer to make it hotter for us but we declined. So if you like very spicy meals please say how hot you would like it. The service was very good. The food is cooked by the parents of the young lady, who we did meet and were very friendly. If we are in Penrith again we will definitely return. It was a bit difficult to find as there are no street signs. But it is up a small side street up the hill towards the railway station on the right called Poet's Walk.

This is your typical Thai restaurant. Don't expect anything plush, it's very basic, but more than worth a visit as the quality of food is exceptional. Mixed starter was delicious, my boyfriend had a Yellow Thai Curry and I had Gang Pang chicken ... Both were seriously, seriously tasty. The waitress (think her name was Nam) was absolutely delightful. Very, very helpful and polite. The only downside was that the couple behind us were having a rather loud argument when we arrived (nothing the restaurant could have helped with!) and it was very, very cold. Kept my coat on for the majority of the time that we were there. Didn't see any radiators on the walls, just a heater in the middle of the room facing the opposite side of the room. It was only marginally warmer than outside! The toilets were also very cold with no warm running water. As mentioned above, it's by no means a plush eatery but the food was delicious.

This place was fantastic. Inside it's your usual style thai restaurant, quite simple, but the staff were very nice. But the food was simply fantastic. I still have cravings for it. I have red thai curry and my partner has a kind prawn curry. It was excellent and the sticky rice good too. I also recommend the sweet potato with seasame seeds and coconut, deep fried in tempura! I was also pleased you can get proper thai beer here too and they serve chang and singha, as well as tiger beer. If I lived closer, this would be my local choice every time.

Having wandered around Penrith on a rainy Tuesday evening looking for a decent restaurant, we were delighted to come across the Bangkok Bistro. There is a good selection of food on the menu catering to all tastes, and the waitress was very pleasant and polite. Food arrived in good time and was very enjoyable. Definitely recommended.

This restaurant is a little gem! On Saturday evening, not only was the service excellent, but the food was incredible!I love Thai food and try to seek out restaurants wherever I go. sadly, most Thai restaurants aren't that great, but this one is fabulous! The Thai Fishcakes are heavenly and the Green Curry is honestly out of this world!I wish I lived nearer to Penrith as I'd be visiting all the time!

My brother in law picked to frequent this restaurant as he really loves Thai food. I believe they have been here before however this is my review not theirs! The restaurant is slightly off the beaten track, however this isnt such a bad thing as it is nice and quiet. You do get a few people walking up and down Poets Walk as that is one of the main thoroughfares between Morrison's and Penrith town centre but this doesnt detract at all. The interior of the restaurant is light and airy and the décor is nice with a Thai theme. We were met by a lovely member of staff who picked up three menus and escorted us to a very nice table - an that's a point to - there was plenty of room between the tables which it made very comfortable while eating. I have found recently that restaurants try and get as many patrons in but in such a small space. The food was presented extremely well and professionally. The food was nice and hot (both spicy and steaming), and also the waitress was attentive but not invasive. I don't like being constantly asked if the meal is OK - if I have said "yes its nice" or similar I do not expect it over and over, but we were only asked one at the Bangkok Bistro - well done indeed. We were not rushed in any way at all. I was very impressed indeed. In addition I was aware that the restaurant also has a takeaway facility but as I didn't use that I am not going to review that. I may leave that for another day :)

This restaurant is just slightly off the main streets on the way to one of the major supermarkets and well know to the locals. Really glad we found it, as the food was superb. Will definitely eat there on future visits.

Had a wonderful takeaway . Hot and sour chicken soup and beef rice noodles for hubbie. I had chicken satay, chicken stir fry with cashews and pineapple. All fresh vegetables. Loads of peppers, onions, mangetout. Etc, etc. Tasted wonderful and ready on time. Would highly recommend both eating in and takeaway. Would have eaten in but our friends took ill.

Arrived 8.45pm without a reservation, staff happy to accommodate us even when they were busy. Service was quite slow, but staff apologetic and food well worth waiting for! Would go again. Good selection of dishes, well priced and lovely presentation.

Came here for dinner last week. Quite busy but the service was well able to cope. The food is excellent and the portion sizes are huge. Prices are reasonable.Only problem-my wife asked for a small (125ml) glass of wine. She was refused and even after explaining that she was driving the refusals became more abrupt. She had to make do with tap water.

I am a thai person living in the uk and visited the Bangkok bistro with my partner and daughter. The food here is very authentic which comes as a nice suprise. This might be the best thai restaurant I have found in the Uk. During our 3 days in Penrith,we went there twice. The owners and staff are very friendly and will cook meals just as you like them.

We love thai food and this is our favourite place to eat in Penrith. The staff are very helpful and polite and its obvious they take great pride, in not only the service, but the fiod they provide. It is of a quality you would expect in a major city and there is certainly nothing to equal it in the local area. The pad thai noodles is one of the best we have ever tasted and the curries are made to a standard rarely found, spicy with a creamy coconut sauce. The restauarant is spacious, warm and invititing. It has been busy on the night we visited, so booking in advance is recomended. They have an extencive drinks menu but we prefare to go with the full thai experience opt for traditional thai lagers to accompany our meals. We are looking forward to our next visit to penrith and Bankok bisro.

In Penrith for weekend. Spent almost an hour trying to find somewhere decent to eat on a Saturday night. Stumbled upon Bankok Bistro by chance. It was almost fully occupied by one big party! Nevertheless, they found us a relatively quiet corner. Food was tasty. House wine decent and staff welcoming. Seemed to be one of the better options in Penrith. Recommend

While looking for food we stumbled on this lucky find. The Bothy is a very welcoming themed cafe, due to most other venues in Kirby Stephen only serving drinks that day the bothy was busy but we still received a warm welcome and advised we would have a wait, we didn’t mind so placed our order. The food was different, not the cheapest but absolutely delicious, the staff even though very busy were so polite and kept us informed of progress with our order. A bit more of an offer for children would be a bonus.

We go to The Bridge about 4 times per year. We are not very extravagant but when we do eat out we want it to be better than I can make at home. Any guest we bring with us all love it too. Every meal we’ve had here has been excellent! My favourites are Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, The Seafood Linguini, my hubby loves the Fish & Chips (he has this every time he goes, lol) . My son loves the Squid starter and I also love the Pate when it’s on. I had a gorgeous fish course in spring but I forget the name of the fish which was the whitest fish I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend Bridge Bistro.

Absolutely beautiful, and cosy. Feels like a real authentic old fashioned style pub, with a live fireplace and plenty of Christmas decorations. For us Aussie’s, it was a real treat to experience it! All of the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Service was like a well oiled machine! We ordered the Sunday roast and it didn’t disappoint one bit. Highly recommend coming here if you come to the quaint town of Penrith. Also pet friendly which was an added bonus!!

Visited on a Friday evening, the place was very quiet with only 3 other diners, however there was a steady stream of takeaway customers. The decor and atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are very nice and efficient. The food was great and very tasty with plenty of choice, I would definitely return.

Extraordinarily bland food. Not even spicy, just unseasoned and uninspired, both in the overall experience and the dishes. The chips as a starter were basically Doritos with canned tomatoes; not even real salsa, and plain tasteless guacamole and sour cream. Very poor start. Our mains of beef tacos and chicken burrito were incredibly disappointing. Dry tasteless corn tortillas (clearly old and over heated) were served with under seasoned ground beef and not much else of note. Burrito was more than 50% flour tortilla and the rest was completely tasteless chicken and white rice. No sauce, no cheese, no spice. Both were served with ‘Mexican rice’ which was plain white rice and a tiny bit of chopped onion and jalapeño. Again, bland. Our margaritas were quite unbalanced; weak, far too much lime juice and salt. Staff were ok; food was delivered quickly, but weren’t interested in providing good service and didn’t check on us once. And at £17 for a main, not even good value, especially considering the portion size. There ARE good Mexican restaurants in the UK, but this is not one of them. It’s as if the kitchen staff haven’t ever heard of spices or sauce! If your idea of spicy and adventurous is an English Tikka Masala, you might enjoy it. If you’ve ever had real Mexican food or even tex-mex, steer clear. I can’t imagine why I’d return here any time soon. Definitely not recommended I’m afraid.
