What a cool, moody venue. Visited the Steak Barn for a late lunch with the family. We all had steak & chips, with sides of peppercorn sauce. Portion sizes were generous (even the kids steak). The steak was beautifully cooked and tasted amazing due to the bbq cooking. The chips were also fab. Cost for 4 steaks (inc. 1 kids), 2 pints & 1 coke was c£120 inc. tip. Will definitely be back. Popped into the Larder next door afterwards, gorgeous farm shop with lots of choice. Just lovely 😁

We went to the Steak Barn for lunch. We were not disappointed. I had the 8oz Sirloin and my wife had the Chicken Kebab. Both were absolutely delicious. My steak was one of the best ever. So tasty and juicy. Steak was £24.99 Chicken Kebab was £19.99. Extremely good value.

This was an utterly superb visit for a late breakfast en route to St. Andrews. Two full breakfasts and two portions of pancakes were happily devoured by our group. The ingredients are top notch - so much so that we bought some of the sausages in their wonderful farm shop afterwards. Service was impeccable - really warm and friendly, and the cost represented great value for money. We immensely enjoyed our visit and will definitely return here!

A wonderful cool bbq shed. The steak was delicious however the staff made it feel like a fast food joint possibly young and inexperienced but maybe just to reduce the time of stay. The Caesar sale was rubbish the croutons were off and no anchovies. I always feedback face to face before writing a review but the waitress could not have been more disinterested. Have steak only!!

Nice thick and tasty sausage and caramalized onions then topped with broon sauce made a simply perfect buttie ! This is a review of the monthly Night Market event which runs on someTuesday's over summer. Firstly we were excited at the prospect of an evening with local traders, stalls and produce. We were going for dinner and hoped to buy lots of tasty food. Traffic was horrendous by 6pm, so took ages to get in. Over flow car park was the adjacent field. To be fair that field had slightly less pot holes than the main driveway to the barn. Balgove need to maintain their property given the profit they must be earning. On arrival we were shocked to see no additional food stalls beyond the normal courtyard set up. There was one external food seller (fresh fish van). The queues at the existing external food huts were huge. Only options were hot dogs, curry, steak sandwich or burgers from the barn. Very few vegetable and desert options. If you had visions of market stalls and lots of options for street food you will only be disappointed. The service at the few options existing was painfully slow. We spent more time waiting in queues than eating. Our dog was bored and they were not geared up with any dog friendly offerings (no water, no bins etc) Drink options very limited and no separate bars or drink specialist. Soft drinks or basic beer or wine were only choices but all at different huts. The produce that is advertised (bakery, sweets, deli, meat etc) is basically the stuff alresdy for sale in the Balgove shop but you would be as well going any other time when it's quieter. Same goes for food from the Balgove Barn, why pay the same (£16+) to eat a cold burger standing in the car park! We overheard others say they ran out of burgers by 7.30pm despite the event supposedly going till 9pm! By all means visit Balgove at any other time when it's less busy and the chefs take more time to serve quality well cooked hot food. The night market is a cheap and poorly executed marketing ploy which fails to come near to the hype and inaccurate social media spin. In future we will head straight to town for a more relaxed, plentiful and enjoyable restaurant meal.

Visited Steak Barn on recent visit from Kent This place is amazing! The venue itself is wonderful - a barn built out of potato crates with long wooden tables and benches Serving steaks which are barbecued to perfection! And the chips-wow I have eaten in lots of so called posh places but the steaks here are second to none! The staff are so friendly and welcoming! Cant wait to visit St Andrews again for another steak!!!!’ Well done

They said that it was a wonderful steak and I picked them up around 4.30pm In the shop, I bought beef olives and sausages which I have just made into a casserole. I added VERY little salt, but found the beef olives in particular very over salted. I will never understand why chefs and food product developers add so much salt that makes food so unpalatable. The sausages were equally too salty. I know it is a Scottish trait to add lots of salt, but it is not suitable for all purchasers. You can add salt, but not remove it. Spoiled what would have otherwise been a nice meal.

Waited a wee while to get a table, we both decided to go for the soup and sandwich combo, we requested water to drink to be followed by coffee and cake which we also ordered at that time. Eventually our soup and sandwich arrived but water never did, we asked another waitress for the water but again it never arrived. When we finished our soup and sandwich we sat for a while and eventually asked another waitress re our coffee and cakes which eventually arrived. The food was good, the service could do with improving but they were very busy.

Met a dear friend there for coffee & lunch. The food was good, but the service dreadful. Inattentive staff who eventually took our order, but when we then went on to order lunch a bit later, we had to ask for the table to be cleared twice. Then again waited for 20 minutes to get staff to take a coffee order. Staff need to be trained better - shame as it lets the Balgove down.

We came across this place travelling into St Andrews for Cupar. Looked new, as we had never seen it before. There is a farm shop and cafe. High end kind of prices. We went to the cafe, they were between breakfast and lunch, so we offering only coffee and cakes, so we had a couple of scones. Looked nice, but fell short from a taste point of view. We gave it another go later in the week, this time for breakfast. Better, but not doing it for me, I'm afraid.

Loved this little gem of a find. The quality of the Farmshop produce is second to none, a butchery of the finest I have seen in a long time and am a staple Farmshop shopper. Really nice casual feel in the cafe, enough of a dejection to cater for the most. Portion size a tiny bit small (my children were still hungry). Definitively worth a trip. Just a tip to the staff in the cafe, a smile and a hello would be nice, too many seemed stressed even when it wasn’t busy.

We are new to the area and had been looking forward to a meal at the steak barn as the place always looks really busy and popular when we shop at Balgove Larder. What a let down! The service was atrocious and really slow. Waited more than an hour for our food and when it did arrive both meals were cold, dry and completely tasteless. The steak was over cooked and chewy and the lamb burger was dried up. Both meals looked so unappetising and we both left most of the food. For the prices they charge we expected a lot better. We told the waitress we were unhappy with the standard and she spoke to a manager who took the price of 2 drinks off our bill. I would have preferred it if they had taken at least one of our meals off the bill. The staff are nice but we won’t be returning. A complete waste of money.

We have been coming to the balgove for a few years and until recently would highly recommend the cafe. However in recent weeks the standard of some of the food has fell below the previous standard. For instance the soup and chowder are more watery with less taste. The scones are smaller and dry and tasteless. The staff are excellent and doing the best to apologise to customers, there is definitely a problem In the kitchen with a deterioration in basic food items. In the deli counter the usual excellent creamy coleslaw has been replaced by a tasteless dry offering. Very disappointing.

What a palavar! Had to scan a Q code etc, etc. No evident menus to look at. Waitress had to stand and oversee our transaction which wasn't clear cut. Said they were too busy to go in and out but yet she had time to stand at least 10mins till we placed our order?? Surely it would be quicker for the staff to do it? Same happened with old folk sitting next to us, the waitress had to take their phone. There were numerous menus inside so this isn't the issue. I know it's a directive from the Scottish Government but really?? It would certainly put me going out and I wouldn't eat here again. However, the food was good, only 3 forks supplied for a party of 4 and a roasting hot glass supplied for a cold lager??!! Could not recommend it at this time.

Disappointed with the first indoor visit to Balgove since they re-opened. We used it quite a lot when it was takeaway only, and it was pretty efficient, with good quality food.Waited around 20 minutes - the drinks arrived, around 10-15 minutes before any food. We had ordered bacon rolls, the bacon was lukewarm at best, fatty, greasy, and sparse. The staff looked utterly miserable, I appreciate they were busy but zero effort was made.Has gone significantly downhill.

Balgove Larder cafe is a great option for breakfast if you're looking for somewhere out of the busy main streets of St Andrews that feels COVID-safe: outdoor seating very well spaced apart with big enough tables, order/pay through your phone using QR Code if seated outside. Pretty classic Scottish breakfast options, nothing insanely remarkable but good and staff are friendly. Market inside is a bit pricey but good if you're looking for some treats or little Scottish gifts (eg. soaps, books, etc).

My wife and I finished a working visit in St Andrews and I took her to have a steak in Balgove Larder. We haven't been to any restaurant in over a year, so this was first time back at it and WOW it was GORGEOUS!The restaurant is in a barn with long tables and the steaks came on wooden platters, so a really good setting. My wife had fillet, well done and I had rib eye, medium.Mine just melted in my mouth, it was absolutely lovely. My wife's, at well done, didn't melt, but it was tasty and although it didn't melt like mine, it certainly wasn't chewy. Both came with chips, salad and various sauces and sides can be added. Re-eeeeeally lovely. We didn't have any sweet and if I could find a negative, I didn't like their pork scratchings. We aimed to go here when we finished the job and it was a great finish to the week.

First trip back to the Balgove after it reopened. We are regulars, at least once a week. Staff as usual very friendly helpful and professional, ably led by Nicola. The menu has changed slightly with addition of braised cheek, instead of stew. Not to everyone's taste. The chowder is not as tasty as before. Also, the delacatesant counter has changed the previous creamy and delicious coleslaw to an unappealing dry offering. Not at all appetizing. If things worked before why change, for changes sake. The Covid protection methods are extremely good.

Previously ate here in July 2020 and we were very impressed and couldn’t fault the meal / service. Ate here tonight and it couldn’t have been more different. We had a short wait before getting seated so sat with a drink in the outside area. The woman who greeted us was friendly and accommodating. Service was prompt when we arrived at our table - our food and drink order taken quickly and drinks arrived promptly. It all seemed to go a bit downhill after that.. steaks arrived with no sauces or sides. We were left sitting waiting then a waitress came over and asked if we were waiting on sides.. when we replied yes she told us they must have given them to another table so would get the chef to put more on so we had cold steak and chips with hot sides. Pricing was average for the steaks but I feel £2.50 for a small pot of garlic Mayo (think McDonald’s sauce paper pot size) is steep. Following our meal we just asked for the bill, 15 minutes later we were still waiting on said bill. We asked the same waitress again who then brought it over, we paid and left. Staff were friendly enough but nothing seemed to flow, service was fragmented and I sadly would have to say overall poor. We were really looking forward to our meal but have been sadly disappointed as had high hopes like previously. Would we come back? Possibly but not in a hurry.

We placed our order and we’re soon given our hot chocolate drinks and jam, butter and clotted cream for our scones but no scones. We had finished our hot chocolate by the time they were delivered and were told that they take 9 minutes to heat the scones and it’s just your luck if the drinks and scones are ready at the same time. They also said that the drinks and scones are both made at different places isn’t the kitchen and they have no control of the timings???? We were also told that we should have stated when placing our order that we wanted them delivered at the same time, something I think would have been obvious when we placed the order. We were supplied with another complimentary order of hot chocolate but by that point we were disappointed and it’s put us off a future visit.

We had to wait 45 minutes from the time we ordered until we got our food - just two burgers with fries. The burgers, at £9.50 each, consist of the bun, a meat pattie, a piece of lettuce, a tomato slice and a gherkin. There is no sauce, cheese, or anything else so it’s all very dry and not big on flavour. The fries are mediocre, you can get better from your local chippy. By the time the food arrived we were running late for our tee time so asked to take it away. When we managed to finally eat it, it had the consistency and the taste of a shoe sole. There are so many great places to eat in St Andrews, I was a regular here pre-Covid but not going back again.

We have not been at Balgove for quite some time and the coffee and scones were absolutely superb. There was also a huge selection of cakes and the service was as ever first class.

I can’t commend Balfour for the breakfast I have just enjoyed enough, it was the best I have had in a very very long time and excellent value for money. So what made it so good....Balgove make their own sausages and black pudding both of which are extremely high quality (I enjoyed it so much I went to their shop and bought some) and all other aspects of the delicious breakfast was excellent. My wife had a delicious Eggs Benedict with bacon and praised it very highly (must have been good as she never offered me any).Service was prompt, polite and friendly and the environment was clean and Covid secure, I very heartily recommend Balgove to everyone...it also has an excellent farm shop which is pretty big and stocks some very nice products.

Visited Blagove for lunch... with all the classic dishes the larder did not disappoint, from the delicious chowder soup to the filling sandwiches. We were greeted by the lovely Alastair, who made us feel very welcome & always up for a little laugh. It was a first class service with a smile, and nothing was too much to ask. Very professional cafe with a cosy country vibe!

Went to see Mary Quant last night and wanted to try Balgove for breakfast. Great decision, full breakfast and morning roll. Staff were outstanding and they were Careful with Sanitising every table and chair. Thank you all, attentive, felt safe and great staff service, well done. Appreciated, and pleasant experience. You rock, keep it up. Shame we are so far away or this would be a regular visit. Great job everyone..

On a visit to St Andrews yesterday morning (6/9/20) we were looking for somewhere to have some Breakfast. As we drove to St Andrews we seen the sign for Balgrove Larder and decided to try it out.How surprised we were to find such a wonderful place. You can choose to sit outside of you wish. The choices are good and nothing is a problem. We were seated very quickly with menus and orders were taken. We had to weight 10 maybe 15 mins but was not a problem. I thought they couldve brought our coffees and teas sooner rather than waiting on our meals to be ready and all come at once. The food we had was excellent the bacon thick cut and Smokey was out of this world. There was no hurrying you and were given plenty of time and staff very attentive to all your needs. They have an on-site farm shop with lots of delicacies to temp you. They also have a steak barn for afternoons and evening which all is cooked over not embers and as we were leaving you could smell the smoke in the air. Will we be back to eat here again YES

After long last, we finally made it to the steak barn. 3 hungry adults excited about what awaited. Was told we would have to wait 45mins to an hour so we browsed in the shop, then had a drink. Our table came much quicker so off we trot. Shared 2 apps between 3 ppl, absolutely delicious. Waited 40 mins for steaks, service was slow, couldn’t get more drinks. My filet was lovely if not on the cold side and the cote de boeuf that the other 2 shared was totally raw in the middle. Tried for over 10 mins to get service to return it but no joy. Onion rings were cold, so were fries. Finally managed to get a take out container and took the vote de boeuf home where our pets polished it off!! All in all an expensive & negative experience, so won’t return

On a Sunday evening my wife and myself turned up at 4.30pm being told we would have to wait 30mins for a table. We gave up at 6pm being told we would have to wait another half an hour. Totally unacceptable and unreasonable and despite being a loyal customer in the past we will not be back until they sort this system this out . Goodness knows how long you would need to wait for a meal once inside. You cannot book a table.

As name suggests it is a steak barn serving steaks in a barn...unfortunately theydonot take bookings so waiting is inevitable. We were quoted approx 30mins but it was nearer 50mins before we were taken into the barn. I quite enjoy the layout and atmosphere of eating at along wooden rustic table. The menu offers all types of steaks with chips. Our steaks were cooked as asked. Children's menu is overpriced and doesn't include a drink...I ordered hollandaise sauce which cost £2.50 and it was like watered mayo with mustard colouring...they do have an outside bar serving good choice of beers. Staff were stretched on our visit but our waitress taking our order was super friendly.

Review for the Cafe Larder as opposed to the adjacent steak barn.Fabulous food and service with great social distancing. Outside tables all very well spaced out - approx 3m+ attended by friendly members of staff on hand to sanitise and assist with ordering from the app .Alistair was very helpful and recommended delicious daily specials - chilli and coconut soup and delicious wraps . Will definitely be back - felt so welcome and safe .

The place was not very full due to Covid regulations.15 minutes from arrival to drinks being served - pretty slow. Our food was put on the table 65 minutes after our arrival. We had a steak, three burgers and a chicken kebab - hardly Cordon Bleu. It all tasted very good, mine was a burger with extra blue cheese - gorgeous. The experience of good tasty food was marred by the very very slow service. It even took ages to pay the bill.Did I leave a tip - what do you think or expect ?

Dropped in for brunch stood in a queue for about 5 minutes but the staff dealt with us in no time at all ,nice to see when a table was vacated the staff were onto clearing and sanitising right away Tables are well spaced from each other . My partner had the bacon roll which was generously filled but was not taken with the roll itself and I took the Eggs Benedict which was superb . Full marks to the staff they work well as a team

After shielding for 135 days, it was time for an adventure and St Andrews was our destination of choice. We’ve been to Balgove many times but this would be our first in this ‘new normal’.We were wanting to take advantage of the Scottish summer and decided to have lunch outside. We were greeted at the alfresco seating area and after a brief explanation of how things worked, we had to wait for a suitable table to come up. Some of the outside bench seating isn’t ideal and ‘numb bum’ shouldn’t be your lasting impression of Balgove, just choose your seats wisely.Ordering is relatively straight forward and everything is done via a QR code. I reckon it would be a lot slicker inside with someone managing your table in terms of courses and additional drinks. The food is always solid at Balgove, the ploughman’s salad is a hearty robust lunching delight, with enough cheese to sink a battleship. All this is backed up with the freshness you would expect from a business that prides itself on local and seasonal. The sandwiches are filled with real ingredients that taste amazing and served in proper bread. As they say, it’s not fast food but it’s good food.Dining by QR isn’t as refined and attentive as dining indoors but with a splash of Scottish sunshine, you don’t mind.

By not taking bookings can mean that you have people waiting around whereas current CV19 advice is to arrive no earlier than 10 minutes beforehand. I think they need to rethink their procedures. Food was good. If you are literally only cooking burgers and steaks then you shouldn't get it wrong. The barn atmosphere works but not sure how it will be during winter when people will not be able to sit outside so possibly not allowing good spacing inside the steak barn. Overall they give you "exactly what it says on the tin". Somehow we expected more; couldn't quite put my finger on why...

After golfing at the Torrance course at the Fairmont where there were no meals, snacks or refreshments available at the club house, we adjourned to the Balgove on our way home. The first thing we noted was the exceptionally large car park with ample spaces and spacing. We were shown to a table for 5 where the menus were lying on the table. A staff member came & took details of one of our party. We ordered the soup & sandwich special. There was a choice of fillings for the sandwiches. All was served very quickly, even thought the cafe was busy. We all enjoyed our snacks, and will return.

Third visit here over last few years and I feel they have improved to the point of basic steak perfection. This was always more of an experience than a restaurant- very good steak but very basically cooked and not all that brilliantly seasoned- however even though it is still quite basic in some areas they now seem to season the steps a bit more as well as just cooking them up in their amazing smelling big oven. As a result you have a steak that is perfectly cooked and naturally flavoursome and fresh tasting that is sure to satisfy you if you are a proper carnivore like me. And also- just a fun place to eat in with a fantastic shop next to it- great overall experience.

In short, the service was abysmal, I thought they’d forgotten about my drink order it took so long to arrive, we sat with dirty plates for so long that I had to shout someone over to ask for the bill, our medium and medium-rare steaks were identical (and borderline moo-ing) the chips consisted of small scraps, the kids burger which was £5.95 didn’t even come with tomato sauce or cheese which I understand from reading previous reviews would have cost £2.50 each. I had such high hopes for this place but unfortunately was really disappointed. I’ve had much better steaks and service elsewhere.

While on holiday been here for both tea at the steak barn and breakfast at the cafe, and both where very top quality. Wait at the steak barn evening was slightly longer than I would have preferred however in these times I was happy to except given just how well they were following to rules. Food for breakfast was amazing and the cleaning of tables in the cafe was VERY thorough, every inch of the menus, table chairs, sugar etc was cleaned with in an inch of its life. Very impressive.

Second visit, yesterday for scones, returned today for breakfast. Weather supported outside eating but looked like good measures in place where ever you ate. Nice food, ordered on line with no fuss, no description of food would be only comment ( hubby ordered breakfast but wasny sure what was in it till it arrived). Will definately both return and recommend. Staff also pleasant

Whilst the food might be good, but the wait is hellish! You cannot book a table so you wait your turn in the queue, but this can be over 1 hour. The website mentions outdoor tables that you sit at and order from the App, but no, these are set aside for people who book! Contradiction, yep!We were 2 hours from arriving to starters being served- another 20 mins for mains- so if you are hungry, stock up before you go with a hearty breakfast, and a little snack for the queue!

Tried every time we went to St. Andrews to get into steak barn was so happy we got in this time, What a disappointment steak was tough chips were crispy scrapsPaid for upgrade chips (a sprinkle of cheese) £2.50 my grandson's wanted cheese burger another £2.50 each for a tiny slice of cheese You had to pay for some garlic mayonnaise It came in a paper pot like the (McDonald’s pot which is free) it was not even full and cost £2.50 Each what a rip off. table had a natural chunk out of it when the table got cleaned they never cleaned the food out of the hole?? We will not be going back don’t mind paying for anything but hate being ripped off our bill was £221.60 that was minus drinks we had as we were waiting for a table, kids burgers should come with cheese or no cheese as standard all condiments should be free

Went for steak night but extremely disappointed. Asked for medium steak but was more rare.Few soggy chips, hard peas and two underdone soggy onion rings. No salad as advertsed. Food was also cold. Asked for a prosecco and was told had no cold ones . Was given small one off top shelf behind bar but when I opened it it was completely flat and very yellow so I think it must have been on the shelf a long while! Lady opened big bottle which again came from top shelf so was not cold but was bubbly. Can't believe there was no bottles in wine fridge. Sticky toffee pudding was good though. Seeing as there was just one other couple in the restaurant there really was no excuse for steak meal being so poor as kitchen not rushed. Won't be rushing back!!!

What a venue !! Charming with a historical room to be seen to be believed (clipper room) ! I cannot say enough about the owners and staff who made me feel welcomed and could not do enough ! I was there for a music gig with friends and the music room venue was brilliant , atmospheric and intimate ! The hotel is in a lovely location with historical sites , coastal walks and a golf course nearby.

When the weather turns cold, shops closed, you don’t want a restaurant, just a cuppa, Alexander and George will make you welcome. Enticed by the chips! Feel much better now. Thanks guys!

Having always enjoyed meals at The Doll’s House we imagined this was a mere name change, and were drawn in by the offer of a reasonably priced set menu all day Wednesday and Thursday. Inside the decor was smart enough and the waitress pleasant. However they were unaware of the set menu offer clearly advertised outside, and then said they’d still put our meal through at that price so long as we didn’t order anything expensive ! This wasn’t easy as five dishes were already sold out by 7.30, leaving little choice. The soups were ok, as was my deer, but my wife’s ratatouille was the most ridiculous item I’ve ever seen offered as main dish- three slices of undercooked courgette, a few tomatoes swimming in a watery sauce. We skipped desserts and were presented with a bill of £72, the manager having forgotten her promise. On appeal she applied a discount, but £58 was still very expensive for an experience that could charitably be described as poor. I’d steer well clear - there is no shortage of places to eat in St Andrews.
