Having recently visited this local cafe, I felt compelled to share my experience in the hope that potential visitors might make a more informed decision. This place, quite frankly, was a total rip-off. Firstly, let's talk about the prices, which were completely out of sync with the quality and value provided. A simple meal of coffee and eggs on toast with salmon set me back an eye-watering £15. This is not fine dining, and it's hard to fathom how these prices could be justified. Even the upscale Duck and Waffle restaurant further up the road offers the meal I had cheaper and of course with much better quality. The staff, unfortunately, did little to alleviate the sticker shock. Their lack of experience was evident in their inattentiveness, making the dining experience even less enjoyable. Good service can often compensate for other shortcomings, but this was far from the case here. Now, onto the food. The cafe heavily promotes its use of "locally sourced" ingredients, but that did not seem to translate into quality on the plate. The food I had was decidedly bland, the coffee lacklustre. For the premium they're charging, one would at least expect standout taste and freshness. It's disappointing to see such establishments that don't seem to care for the local community or aim for customer retention. Instead, this place appears to be targeting transient tourists who won't be around long enough to call them out on their shortcomings. The management should seriously reconsider its business model and pricing strategy. Lastly, and perhaps most aggravating, was the audacity of running such a business with such steep profit margins without even delivering on basic quality or service. This is not a reflection of entrepreneurial spirit but rather an insult to those who dedicate themselves to the hospitality industry. I implore anyone with a hint of sanity to think twice before visiting this place. You're far better off investing your hard-earned money elsewhere, where you can get better value and feel appreciated as a customer.

We had a very bad experience at this cafe. We stopped in with our son to get some breakfast while in Edinburgh. Firstly our table was dirty and when we asked for it to be cleaned they wiped half of it leaving the other half covered in crumbs and sticky. Next we used the bathroom which had no baby changing unit and no paper towels to dry hands and dirty paper on the floor. We ordered coffees, house pancakes with berry compote and a pastry. The pastry and coffee were fine but the pancakes were really very bad. They were completely flat and rubbery (difficult to cut with a butter knife) and the berry compote was just a watery mess on the plate. In addition the cutlery which was brought to our table was dirty. On leaving I was asked if everything was ok to which I explained the pancakes were not very good which was met with no response. The staff were on their phones most of the time we were there and seemed entirely disinterested. A very disappointing experience and we would absolutely not recommend this place to anyone.

After a busy visit in the city centre, we stopped off at this cafe/bakery on Broughton Street: a great selection of bakery goods, artisan breads, and excellent coffee. I am not sure how they make their fruit scones, but they are delicious with hints of vanilla, cinnamon and orange.

We just missed the cooked food menu, so we chose sandwiches and salad from the counter. Both sandwiches were very tasty and not dry. I got an egg and bacon filled roll and my partner got a ham and cheese on rye. We got a salad to share and there was plenty of food. We also shared a blackcurrant tart that was delicious. I enjoyed my black tea. We had a big lunch for under £20 for the two of us, with a great view out of the window. The staff very friendly and helpful. I also highly recommend the bread and pastries. We'll be back!

It’s not the breakfast spot we were looking for, but it’s the one we needed. Our original destination was closed. As we were standing on the corner, furiously surfing our phones for alternatives, my wife looks behind us and says, “Hey! This place has bread and coffee!” What a lucky find. They were able to immediately seat our party of 7 with two kids. The food and service was wonderful. Perhaps a bit slow but then I think there were only two people working and the name of the place IS “Andante”, so we were definitely not disappointed. Our party had a variety of the breakfast rolls, smoked salmon & egg scramble, eggs kimchi, eggs royale and pancakes for the kids. All delicious, hot and fresh with amazing coffees to help it all down. We also purchased a selection of pretzels and a baguette that were a tasty treat on the train later in the day. So glad we found you!

We did seem a bit dubious because the place was empty and know we know why. We ordered a latte, sparkling mineral water, croissant with butter and “homemade jam” and breakfast roll with veggie haggis and scrambled egg. The latte was ok to be fair but the water arrived in a glass with straw, no ice and was warm. God knows where it was poured from. The croissant was like rubber and certainly gave my jaws a good workout and the “homemade jam” was tasteless. The breakfast roll was dry and the scrambled egg was well over cooked and also like rubber. This was served with a wet knife and greasy finger marked napkin on the table. The croissant at least came with a dry knife and clean napkin. My Partner did eat the roll due to hunger and needing to take medication and I managed just over half of the croissant before my jaws gave up. I went over to inform the server of our dissatisfaction and she laughed in my face and replied “well that’s the way we do it here, £10.55 and we’ll get you a better croissant next time” I was lost for words so just paid and left. As a local resident I will certainly not be back and won’t be recommending to anyone.

Had a table booked early on a Sunday. Upon arrival it was full. We were waiting there for 20 minutes without any contact from the waitress. Zero eye-contact. Maybe they were under staffed. Maybe they over booked. But we wouldn't know because our presence wasn't even acknowledged. I've booked an appointment to see the doctor because I must be suffering spells of invisibility.

Nice bread but useless staff, first they said they didn’t have a table as one ( which was empty) was very wobbly today!!! There were two chairs for people waiting for takeaway which were unoccupied while two people waiting for takeaways were occupying a table each. Very uninspired bacon sandwich but the worst thing was paying £4.75 for a small glass of “ freshly squeezed orange juice “ which came straight out of a bottle

We had a wonderful breakfast in the Bakery which is light, bright and spacious. We sampled a range of the pastries including the raspberry Danish pastries, pear Danish pastries and chocolate twists which were all perfectly laminated, light and whilst buttery not at all greasy....

Was recommended here as I am celiac and they have a gf menu. As we were unsure what time we would be going (prior commitment before hand) I did not book. We arrived at 2.45pm and there was a sign outside saying 'bookings only, no walk ins' This was NOT on their website. We went in and spoke to a female member of staff who advised exactly what the sign had said. I then spoke to a male member of staff and asked where on their website it stated what the sign said, he said it didn't. Advised that due to rugby being on, they were unusually busy. The restaurant is large and they were not full to capacity. Asked if there was anyway we could have a table for 2 for an hour, point blank told no. We won't be returning.

We approached the café at 9am with laundry and were greeted by four Scottish Terriers who were apparently running the place, until Graham arrived up the stairs to ask what the heck we wanted...and we knew immediately we were in the right place! I've read some of the reviews, and if you don't understand Graham in the first 5 seconds of him opening his mouth, you don't deserve to be there...and I am pretty sure Graham will know/sense it himself. I think he relishes poor reviews. But we felt immediately at home, and once we passed the "test", Graham was the perfect host. I had to put up with insults on my lack of fashion sense and some uncomfortable history lessons regarding the villainy of George Washington, but my wife and I would not trade our experience for anything! Graham practically did our laundry for us, made us coffee, and even gave me a lovely (empty) can of haggis. Thank you for the experience Graham! I hope you enjoy the US Dollar Bill (with Washington on it)...and I won't forget that American history is really Scottish history!

Booked in the restaurant for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We weren’t staying at the hotel but did add that we were celebrating upon booking. We arrived early expecting to have a drink at the bar but the table was ready for us. We received a complimentary glass of champagne each on arrival. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t have done more. They even sorted us out with a special dessert to help celebrate the occasion. The food was to a high standard and the portion size was perfect. Altogether a fantastic meal and exemplary service.
